We consider contractive homomorphisms of a planar algebra ${\mathcal A}(Ω)$ over a finitely connected bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \C$ and ask if they are necessarily completely contractive. We show that a homomorphism $ρ:{\mathcal A}(Ω) \to {\mathcal B}(\mathcal H)$ for which $\dim({\mathcal A}(Ω)/\ker ρ) = 2$ is the direct integral of homomorphisms $ρ_T$ induced by operators on two dimensional Hilbert spaces via a suitable functional calculus $ρ_T: f \mapsto f(T), f\in {\mathcal A}(Ω)$. It is well-known that contractive homomorphisms $ρ_T$, induced by a linear transformation $T:\C^2 \to \C^2$ are necessarily completely contractive. Consequently, using Arveson's dilation theorem for completely contractive homomorphisms, one concludes that such a homomorphism $ρ_T$ possesses a dilation. In this paper, we construct this dilation explicitly. In view of recent examples discovered by Dritschel and McCullough, we know that not all contractive homomorphisms $ρ_T$ are completely contractive even if $T$ is a linear transformation on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. We show that one may be able to produce an example of a contractive homomorphism $ρ_T$ of ${\mathcal A}(Ω)$ which is not completely contractive if an operator space which is naturally associated with the problem is not the MAX space. Finally, within a certain special class of contractive homomorphisms $ρ_T$ of the planar algebra ${\mathcal A}(Ω)$, we construct a dilation.
In this paper, we prove that every completely contractive dual Banach algebra is completely isometric to a $w^\ast$-closed subalgebra the operator space of completely bounded linear operators on some reflexive operator space.
We prove a local convex version of Arveson's extension theorem and of Wittstock's extension theorem. Also we prove a Stinespring type theorem for unbounded local completely contractive maps.
We construct some separable infinite dimensional homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces which generalize the row and column spaces R and C. We show that separable infinite-dimensional Hilbertian JC*-triples are completely isometric to an element of the set of (infinite) intersections of these spaces. This set includes the operator spaces R, C, their intersection, and the space spanned by creation operators on the full anti-symmetric Fock space. In fact, we show that these new spaces are completely isometric to the space of creation (resp. annihilation) operators on the anti-symmetric tensors o…
The operator spaces $H_n^k$ $1\le k\le n$, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces, and arising in the authors' previous study of contractively complemented subspaces of $C^*$-algebras, are shown to be homogeneous and completely isometric to a space of creation operators on a subspace of the anti-symmetric Fock space. The completely bounded Banach-Mazur distance from $H_n^k$ to row or column space is explicitly calculated.
Every homomorphism $φ: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ between Fourier-Stieltjes algebras on locally compact groups $G$ and $H$ is determined by a continuous mapping $α: Y \rightarrow Δ(B(G))$, where $Y$ is a set in the open coset ring of $H$ and $Δ(B(G))$ is the Gelfand spectrum of $B(G)$ (a $*$-semigroup). We exhibit a large collection of maps $α$ for which $φ=j_α: B(G) \rightarrow B(H)$ is a completely positive/completely contractive/completely bounded homomorphism and establish converse statements in several instances. For example, we fully characterize all completely positive/completely contractiv…
A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on a…
To each finite-dimensional operator space $E$ is associated a commutative operator algebra $UC(E)$, so that $E$ embeds completely isometrically in $UC(E)$ and any completely contractive map from $E$ to bounded operators on Hilbert space extends uniquely to a completely contractive homomorphism out of $UC(E)$. The unit ball of $UC(E)$ is characterized by a Nevanlinna factorization and transfer function realization. Examples related to multivariable von Neumann inequalities are discussed.
Motivated by the definition of a semigroup compactification of a locally compact group and a large collection of examples, we introduce the notion of an (operator) "homogeneous left dual Banach algebra" (HLDBA) over a (completely contractive) Banach algebra $A$. We prove a Gelfand-type representation theorem showing that every HLDBA over $A$ has a concrete realization as an (operator) homogeneous left Arens product algebra: the dual of a subspace of $A^*$ with a compatible (matrix) norm and a type of left Arens product ${\scriptscriptstyle \square}$. Examples include all left Arens product alg…
The main goal of this paper is to find operator algebra variants of certain deep results of Stormer, Friedman and Russo, Choi and Effros, Effros and Stormer, Robertson and Youngson, Youngson, and others, concerning projections on C*-algebras and their ranges. (See papers of these authors referenced in the bibliography.) In particular we investigate the `bicontractive projection problem' and related questions in the category of operator algebras. To do this, we will add the ingredient of `real positivity' from recent papers of the first author with Read.
We study the question of whether or not contractive representations of logmodular algebras are completely contractive. We prove that a 2-contractive representation of a logmodular algebra extends to a positive map on the enveloping C*-algebra, which we show generalizes a result of Foias and Suciu on uniform logmodular algebras. Our proof uses non-commutative operator space generalizations of classical results on 2-summing maps and semispectral measures. We establish some matrix factorization results for uniform logmodular algebras
We show that every logmodular subalgebra of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is unitary equivalent to an algebra of block upper triangular matrices, which was conjectured in \cite{VM}. In particular, this shows that every unital contractive representation of a logmodular subalgebra of $M_n(\mathbb{C})$ is automatically completely contractive.
Parallel to the study of finite dimensional Banach spaces, there is a growing interest in the corresponding local theory of operator spaces. We define a family of Hilbertian operator spaces H_n^k,0< k < n+1, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces R_n,C_n and show that an atomic subspace X of B(H) which is the range of a contractive projection on B(H) is isometrically completely contractive to a direct sum of the H_n^k and Cartan factors of types 1 to 4. In particular, for finite dimensional X, this answers a question posed by Oikhberg and Rosenthal. Explicit in the proof is a classific…
This paper is a continuation of the program started by Ruan in 2003, of developing real operator space theory. In particular, we develop the theory of real operator algebras. We also show among other things that the injective envelope, C*-envelope and non-commutative Shilov boundary exist for a real operator space. We develop real one-sided M-ideal theory and characterize one-sided M-ideals in real C*-algebras and real operator algebras with contractive approximate identity.
We extend Agler's notion of a function algebra defined in terms of test functions to include products, in analogy with the practice in real algebraic geometry, and hence the term preordering in the title. This is done over abstract sets and no additional property, such as analyticity, is assumed. Realization theorems give several equivalent ways of characterizing the unit ball (referred to as the Schur-Agler class) of the function algebras. These typically include, in Agler's terminology, a model (here called an Agler decomposition), a transfer function representation, and an analogue of the v…

Choose an arbitrary but fixed set of $n\times n$ matrices $A_1, \ldots, A_m$ and let $Ω_\mathbf A\subset \mathbb C^m$ be the unit ball with respect to the norm $\|\cdot\|_{\mathbf A},$ where $\|(z_1,\ldots ,z_m)\|_{\mathbf A}=\|z_1A_1+ \cdots+z_mA_m\|_{\rm op}.$ It is known that if $m\geq 3$ and $\mathbb B$ is any ball in $\mathbb C^m$ with respect to some norm, say $\|\cdot\|_{\mathbb B},$ then there exists a contractive linear map $L:(\mathbb C^m,\|\cdot\|^*_{\mathbb B})\to \mathcal M_k$ which is not completely contractive. The characterization of those balls in $\mathbb C^2$ for which contr…
We say a completely positive contractive map between two C*-algebras has order zero, if it sends orthogonal elements to orthogonal elements. We prove a structure theorem for such maps. As a consequence, order zero maps are in one-to-one correspondence with *-homomorphisms from the cone over the domain into the target algebra. Moreover, we conclude that tensor products of order zero maps are again order zero, that the composition of an order zero map with a tracial functional is again a tracial functional, and that order zero maps respect the Cuntz relation, hence induce ordered semigroup morph…
Using the notion of complete compactness introduced by H. Saar, we define completely almost periodic functionals on completely contractive Banach algebras. We show that, if $(M,Γ)$ is a Hopf--von Neumann algebra with $M$ injective, then the space of completely almost periodic functionals on $M_\ast$ is a $C^\ast$-subalgebra of $M$.
Working over infinite dimensional separable Hilbert spaces, residual results have been achieved for the space of contractive $C_{0}$-semigroups under the topology of uniform weak operator convergence on compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}_{+}$. Eisner and Serény raised in 2009 the open problem: Does this space constitute a Baire space? Observing that the subspace of unitary semigroups is completely metrisable and appealing to known density results, we solve this problem positively by showing that certain topological properties can in general be transferred from dense subspaces to larger spaces. The…
Let G be a locally compact group. We use the canonical operator space structure on the spaces $L^p(G)$ for $p \in [1,\infty]$ introduced by G. Pisier to define operator space analogues $OA_p(G)$ of the classical Figa-Talamanca-Herz algebras $A_p(G)$. If $p \in (1,\infty)$ is arbitrary, then $A_p(G) \subset OA_p(G)$ such that the inclusion is a contraction; if p = 2, then $OA_2(G) \cong A(G)$ as Banachspaces spaces, but not necessarily as operator spaces. We show that $OA_p(G)$ is a completely contractive Banach algebra for each $p \in (1,\infty)$, and that $OA_q(G) \subset OA_p(G)$ completely …
We prove two versions of Bochner's theorem for locally compact quantum groups. First, every completely positive definite "function" on a locally compact quantum group $\G$ arises as a transform of a positive functional on the universal C*-algebra $C_0^u(\dual\G)$ of the dual quantum group. Second, when $\G$ is coamenable, complete positive definiteness may be replaced with the weaker notion of positive definiteness, which models the classical notion. A counterexample is given to show that the latter result is not true in general. To prove these results, we show two auxiliary results of indepen…
For locally compact groups G and H let A(G) denote the Fourier algebra of G and B(H) the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of H. Any continuous piecewise affine map alpha:Y -> G (where Y is an element of the open coset ring of H) induces a completely bounded homomorphism Phi_alpha:A(G) -> B(H) by setting Phi_alpha u(.)=u(alpha(.)) on Y and Phi_alpha u=0 off of Y. We show that if G is amenable then any completely bounded homomorphism Phi:A(G) -> B(H) is of this form; and this theorem fails if G contains a discrete nonabelian free group. Our result generalises results of P.J. Cohen, B. Host and of the f…
We develop a completely bounded counterpart to the non-commutative Choquet boundary of an operator space. We show how the class of completely bounded linear maps is too large to accommodate our purposes. To overcome this obstacle, we isolate the subset of completely bounded linear maps on an operator space admitting a dilation of the same norm which is multiplicative on the generated $C^*$-algebra. We view such maps as analogues of the familiar unital completely contractive maps, and we exhibit many of their structural properties. Of particular interest to us are those maps which are extremal …
Let $\{ϕ_s\}_{s\in S}$ be a commutative semigroup of completely positive, contractive, and weak*-continuous linear maps acting on a von Neumann algebra $N$. Assume there exists a semigroup $\{α_s\}_{s\in S}$ of weak*-continuous *-endomorphisms of some larger von Neumann algebra $M\supset N$ and a projection $p\in M$ with $N=pMp$ such that $α_s(1-p)\le 1-p$ for every $s\in S$ and $ϕ_s(y)=pα_s(y)p$ for all $y\in N$. If $\inf_{s\in S}α_s(1-p)=0$ then we show that the map $E:M\to N$ defined by $E(x)=pxp$ for $x\in M$ induces a complete isometry between the fixed point spaces of $\{α_s\}_{s\in S}$ …
Let $X=(X(n))_{n \in \mathbb{Z_+}}$ be a standard subproduct system of $C^*$-correspondences over a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal M.$ Assume $T=(T_n)_{n \in \mathbb{Z_+}}$ to be a pure completely contractive, covariant representation of $X$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H,$ and $\mathcal S$ to be a non-trivial closed subspace of $\mathcal H.$ Then $\mathcal{S}$ is invariant for $T$ if and only if there exist a Hilbert space $\mathcal{D},$ a representation $π$ of $\mathcal M$ on $\mathcal D,$ and a partial isometry $Π: \mathcal{F}_X\bigotimes_π\mathcal{D}\to \mathcal{H} $ such that $$Π(S_n(ζ)\otimes I…
Let $(M,Γ)$ be a Hopf--von Neumann algebra, so that $M_\ast$ is a completely contractive Banach algebra. We investigate whether the product of two elements of $M$ that are both weakly almost periodic functionals on $M_\ast$ is again weakly almost periodic. For that purpose, we establish the following factorization result: If $M$ and $N$ are injective von Neumann algebras, and if $x, y \in M \bar{\otimes} N$ correspond to weakly compact operators from $M_\ast$ to $N$ factoring through reflexive operator spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, then the operator corresponding to $xy$ factors through th…
We generalize to the setting of Arveson's maximal subdiagonal subalgebras of finite von Neumann algebras, the Szegö $L^p$-distance estimate, and classical theorems of F. and M. Riesz, Gleason and Whitney, and Kolmogorov. In so doing, we are finally able to provide a complete noncommutative analog of the famous cycle of theorems characterizing the function theoretic generalizations of $H^\infty$. A sample of our other results: we prove a Kaplansky density result for a large class of these algebras, and give a necessary condition for when every completely contractive homomorphism on a unital sub…
In this paper, we consider the question of contractivity vs. complete contractivity for domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$, which are unit balls with respect to some norm. We show that for a large class of Reinhardt domains, the corresponding Banach spaces do not have Property P, which implies that there exists contractive homomorphisms on these domains which are not completely contractive. At the end, we present a simple proof of the fact that the complex Banach spaces $(\mathbb{C}^2,\|\cdot\|_{\infty})$ and $(\mathbb{C}^3,\|\cdot\|_{\infty})$ have Property P.
A theorem of Davis, Figiel, Johnson and Pełczyński tells us that weakly-compact operators between Banach spaces factor through reflexive Banach spaces. The machinery underlying this result is that of the real interpolation method, which has been adapted to the category of operator spaces by Xu, showing the this factorisation result also holds for completely bounded weakly-compact maps. In this note, we show that Xu's ideas can be adapted to give an intrinsic characterisation of when a completely contractive Banach algebra arises as a closed subalgebra of the algebra of completely bounded opera…
We study Hardy spaces $H^p_ν$ of the conjugate Beltrami equation $\bar{\partial} f=ν\bar{\partial f}$ over Dini-smooth finitely connected domains, for real contractive $ν\in W^{1,r}$ with $r>2$, in the range $r/(r-1)<p<\infty$. We develop a theory of conjugate functions and apply it to solve Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the conductivity equation $\nabla.(σ\nabla u)=0$ where $σ=(1-ν)/(1+ν)$. In particular situations, we also consider some density properties of traces of solutions together with boundary approximation issues.
Let $A$ be a homogeneous C*-algebra and $ϕ$ a state on $A.$ We show that if $ϕ$ satisfies a certain faithfulness condition, then there is a net of finite-rank, unital completely positive, $ϕ$-preserving maps on $A$ that tend to the identity pointwise. This combined with results of Ricard and Xu show that the reduced free product of homogeneous C*-algebras with respect to these states have the completely contractive approximation property. We also give an example of a faithful state on $M_2\otimes C[0,1]$ for which no such state-preserving approximation of the identity map exists, thus answerin…
It is well-known that if T is a D_m-D_n bimodule map on the m by n complex matrices, then T is a Schur multiplier and $\|T\|_{cb}=\|T\|$. If n=2 and T is merely assumed to be a right D_2-module map, then we show that $\|T\|_{cb}=\|T\|$. However, this property fails if m>1 and n>2. For m>1 and n=3,4 or $n\geq m^2$, we give examples of maps T attaining the supremum C(m,n)=\sup \|T\|_{cb} taken over the contractive, right D_n-module maps on M_{m,n}, we show that C(m,m^2)=\sqrt{m} and succeed in finding sharp results for C(m,n) in certain other cases. As a consequence, if H is an infinite-dimensio…
Most of this article is an expanded version of our conference talk. It is essentially a survey, but some part, like most of the lengthy Section 5, is comprised of new results whose proofs are unpublished elsewhere. We begin by reviewing the theory of real positivity of operator algebras initiated by the author and Charles Read. Then we present several new general results (mostly joint work with Matthew Neal) about real positive maps. The key point is that real positivity is often the right replacement in a general algebra $A$ for positivity in C*-algebras. We then apply this to studying contra…
We study the unilateral shift (of arbitrary countable multiplicity) as a Hilbert module over the disc algebra and the associated extension groups. In relation with the problem of determining whether this module is projective, we consider a special class of extensions, which we call "polynomial". We show that the subgroup of polynomial extensions of a contractive module by the adjoint of the unilateral shift is trivial. The main tool is a function theoretic decomposition of the Sz.-Nagy--Foias model space for completely non-unitary contractions.
Let E be a product system of C*-correspondences over N^r. Some sufficient conditions for the existence of a not necessarily regular isometric dilation of a completely contractive representation of E are established and difference between regular and *-regular dilations discussed. It is in particular shown that a minimal isometric dilation is *-regular if and only if it is doubly commuting. The case of product systems associated with higher-rank graphs is analysed in detail.
An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analogue of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these 'global' semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix s…
We prove that two dual operator algebras are weak$^*$ Morita equivalent if and only if they have equivalent categories of dual operator modules via completely contractive functors which are also weak$^*$-continuous on appropriate morphism spaces. Moreover, in a fashion similar to the operator algebra case, we characterize such functors as the module normal Haagerup tensor product with an appropriate weak$^*$ Morita equivalence bimodule. We also develop the theory of the $W^*$-dilation, which connects the non-selfadjoint dual operator algebra with the $W^*$-algebraic framework. In the case of w…
Inspired by Kalton and Wood's work on group algebras, we describe almost completely contractive algebra homomorphisms from Fourier algebras into Fourier-Stieltjes algebras (endowed with their canonical operator space structure). We also prove that two locally compact groups are isomorphic if and only if there exists an algebra isomorphism $T$ between the associated Fourier algebras (resp. Fourier-Stieltjes algebras) with completely bounded norm $\| T \|_{cb} < \sqrt {3/2}$ (resp. $ \| T \|_{cb} < \sqrt {5}/2$). We show similar results involving the norm distortion $\| T \| \| T ^{-1} \|$ with …
A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe s…
Let T be a C_{\cdot 0}-contraction on a Hilbert space H and S be a non-trivial closed subspace of H. We prove that S is a T-invariant subspace of H if and only if there exists a Hilbert space D and a partially isometric operator Π: H^2_D(\mathbb{D}) \raro H such that ΠM_z = T Πand that S = ran Π, or equivalently, P_S = ΠΠ^*. As an application we completely classify the shift-invariant subspaces of C_{\cdot 0}-contractive and analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit disc. Our results also includes the case of weighted Bergman spaces over the unit disk.
For $S$ a contractive analytic operator-valued function on the unit disk ${\mathbb D}$, de Branges and Rovnyak associate a Hilbert space of analytic functions ${\mathcal H}(S)$ and related extension space ${\mathcal D(S)}$ consisting of pairs of analytic functions on the unit disk ${\mathbb D}$. This survey describes three equivalent formulations (the original geometric de Branges-Rovnyak definition, the Toeplitz operator characterization, and the characterization as a reproducing kernel Hilbert space) of the de Branges-Rovnyak space ${\mathcal H}(S)$, as well as its role as the underlying Hil…
