Parallel to the study of finite dimensional Banach spaces, there is a growing interest in the corresponding local theory of operator spaces. We define a family of Hilbertian operator spaces H_n^k,0< k < n+1, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces R_n,C_n and show that an atomic subspace X of B(H) which is the range of a contractive projection on B(H) is isometrically completely contractive to a direct sum of the H_n^k and Cartan factors of types 1 to 4. In particular, for finite dimensional X, this answers a question posed by Oikhberg and Rosenthal. Explicit in the proof is a classification up to complete isometry of atomic w*-closed JW*-triples without an infinite dimensional rank 1 w^*-closed ideal
Given a JBW*-triple Z and a normal contractive projection P on Z, we show that the (Murray-von Neumann) type of each summand of P(Z) is dominated by the type of Z.
In 1965, Ron Douglas proved that if $X$ is a closed subspace of an $L^1$-space and $X$ is isometric to another $L^1$-space, then $X$ is the range of a contractive projection on the containing $L^1$-space. In 1977 Arazy-Friedman showed that if a subspace $X$ of $C_1$ is isometric to another $C_1$-space (possibly finite dimensional), then there is a contractive projection of $C_1$ onto $X$. In 1993 Kirchberg proved that if a subspace $X$ of the predual of a von Neumann algebra $M$ is isometric to the predual of another von Neumann algebra, then there is a contractive projection of the predual of…
We study contractive projections, isometries, and real positive maps on algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. For example we find generalizations and variants of certain classical results on contractive projections on C*-algebras and JB-algebras due to Choi, Effros, Størmer, Friedman and Russo, and others. In fact most of our arguments generalize to contractive `real positive' projections on Jordan operator algebras, that is on a norm-closed space A of operators on a Hilbert space which are closedunder the Jordan product. We also prove many new general results on real positive maps which a…
In this paper, we prove that every completely contractive dual Banach algebra is completely isometric to a $w^\ast$-closed subalgebra the operator space of completely bounded linear operators on some reflexive operator space.
We exhibit a singly generated, semisimple commutative operator algebra with a contractive approximate identity, such that the spectrum of the generator is a null sequence and zero, but the algebra is not the closed linear span of the idempotents associated with the null sequence and obtained from the analytic functional calculus. Moreover the multiplication on the algebra is neither compact nor weakly compact. Thus we construct a `large' operator algebra of orthogonal idempotents, which may be viewed as a dense subalgebra of c0.
We continue our study of operator algebras with contractive approximate identities (cais) by presenting a couple of interesting examples of operator algebras with cais, which in particular answer questions raised in previous papers in this series, for example about whether, roughly speaking, `weak compactness' of an operator algebra, or the lack of it, can be seen in the spectra of its elements.
The operator spaces $H_n^k$ $1\le k\le n$, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces, and arising in the authors' previous study of contractively complemented subspaces of $C^*$-algebras, are shown to be homogeneous and completely isometric to a space of creation operators on a subspace of the anti-symmetric Fock space. The completely bounded Banach-Mazur distance from $H_n^k$ to row or column space is explicitly calculated.
The main goal of this paper is to find operator algebra variants of certain deep results of Stormer, Friedman and Russo, Choi and Effros, Effros and Stormer, Robertson and Youngson, Youngson, and others, concerning projections on C*-algebras and their ranges. (See papers of these authors referenced in the bibliography.) In particular we investigate the `bicontractive projection problem' and related questions in the category of operator algebras. To do this, we will add the ingredient of `real positivity' from recent papers of the first author with Read.
We make several contributions to our recent program investigating structural properties of algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. For example, we make substantial contributions to the noncommutative peak interpolation program begun by Hay and the first author, Hay and Neal. Another sample result: an operator algebra has a contractive approximate identity iff the linear span of the elements with positive real part is dense. We also extend the theory of compact projections to the most general case. Despite the title, our algebras are often allowed to have no approximate identity.
We construct some separable infinite dimensional homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces which generalize the row and column spaces R and C. We show that separable infinite-dimensional Hilbertian JC*-triples are completely isometric to an element of the set of (infinite) intersections of these spaces. This set includes the operator spaces R, C, their intersection, and the space spanned by creation operators on the full anti-symmetric Fock space. In fact, we show that these new spaces are completely isometric to the space of creation (resp. annihilation) operators on the anti-symmetric tensors o…
A one to one correspondence between shifts of group-like projections on a locally compact quantum group ${\mathbb{G}}$ which are preserved by the scaling group and contractive idempotent functionals on the dual $\hat{\mathbb{G}}$ is established. This is a generalization of the Illie-Spronk's correspondence between contractive idempotents in the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact group $G$ and cosets of open subgroups of $G$. We also establish a one to one correspondence between non-degenerate, integrable, ${\mathbb{G}}$-invariant ternary rings of operators $X\subset L^\infty({\math…
We consider contractive homomorphisms of a planar algebra ${\mathcal A}(Ω)$ over a finitely connected bounded domain $Ω\subseteq \C$ and ask if they are necessarily completely contractive. We show that a homomorphism $ρ:{\mathcal A}(Ω) \to {\mathcal B}(\mathcal H)$ for which $\dim({\mathcal A}(Ω)/\ker ρ) = 2$ is the direct integral of homomorphisms $ρ_T$ induced by operators on two dimensional Hilbert spaces via a suitable functional calculus $ρ_T: f \mapsto f(T), f\in {\mathcal A}(Ω)$. It is well-known that contractive homomorphisms $ρ_T$, induced by a linear transformation $T:\C^2 \to \C^2$ …
Based on a careful analysis of functional models for contractive multi-analytic operators we establish a one-to-one correspondence between unitary equivalence classes of minimal contractive liftings of a row contraction and injective symbols of contractive multi-analytic operators. This allows an effective construction and classification of all such liftings with given defects. Popescu's theory of characteristic functions of completely non-coisometric row contractions is obtained as a special case satisfying a Szegö condition. In another special case of single contractions and defects equal to…
Let $T\colon L^p({\mathcal M})\to L^p({\mathcal N})$ be a bounded operator between two noncommutative $L^p$-spaces, $1\leq p<\infty$. We say that $T$ is $\ell^1$-bounded (resp. $\ell^1$-contractive) if $T\otimes I_{\ell^1}$ extends to a bounded (resp. contractive) map from $L^p({\mathcal M};\ell^1)$ into $L^p({\mathcal N};\ell^1)$. We show that Yeadon's factorization theorem for $L^p$-isometries, $1\leq p\not=2 <\infty$, applies to an isometry $T\colon L^2({\mathcal M})\to L^2({\mathcal N})$ if and only if $T$ is $\ell^1$-contractive. We also show that a contractive operator $T\colon L^p({\mat…
We give several applications of a recent theorem of the second author, which solved a conjecture of the first author with Hay and Neal, concerning contractive approximate identities; and another of Hay from the theory of noncommutative peak sets, thereby putting the latter theory on a much firmer foundation. From this theorem it emerges there is a surprising amount of positivity present in any operator algebras with contractive approximate identity. We exploit this to generalize several results previously available only for $C^*$-algebras, and we give many other applications.
To each finite-dimensional operator space $E$ is associated a commutative operator algebra $UC(E)$, so that $E$ embeds completely isometrically in $UC(E)$ and any completely contractive map from $E$ to bounded operators on Hilbert space extends uniquely to a completely contractive homomorphism out of $UC(E)$. The unit ball of $UC(E)$ is characterized by a Nevanlinna factorization and transfer function realization. Examples related to multivariable von Neumann inequalities are discussed.
Let $V\subseteq W$ be two operator spaces. Arveson-Wittstock-Hahn-Banach theorem asserts that every completely contractive map $φ:V\to \mathcal{B}(H)$ has a completely contractive extension $\tildeφ:W\to \mathcal{B}(H)$, where $\mathcal{B}(H)$ denotes the space of all bounded operators from a Hilbert space $H$ to itself. In this paper, we show that this is not in general true for $p$-operator spaces, that is, we show that there are $p$-operator spaces $V\subseteq W$, an $SQ_p$ space $E$, and a $p$-completely contractive map $φ:V\to \mathcal{B}(E)$ such that $φ$ does not extend to a $p$-complet…
A general form of contractive idempotent functionals on coamenable locally compact quantum groups is obtained, generalising the result of Greenleaf on contractive measures on locally compact groups. The image of a convolution operator associated to a contractive idempotent is shown to be a ternary ring of operators. As a consequence a one-to-one correspondence between contractive idempotents and a certain class of ternary rings of operators is established.
A contraction $T$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be pure if the sequence $\lbrace T^{*n} \rbrace_{n}$ converges to $0$ in the strong operator topology. In this article, we prove that for contractions $T$, which commute with certain tractable tuples of commuting operators $X = (X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$, the following statements are equivalent: (i) $T$ is a pure contraction on $\mathcal{H}$, (ii) the compression $P_{\mathcal{W}(X)}T|_{\mathcal{W}(X)}$ is a pure contraction, where $\mathcal{W}(X)$ is the wandering subspace corresponding to the tuple $X$. An operator-valued m…
The characteristic function has been an important tool for studying completely non unitary contractions on Hilbert spaces. In this note, we consider completely non-coisometric contractive tuples of commuting operators on a Hilbert space $\clh$. We show that the characteristic function, which is now an operator valued analytic function on the open Euclidean unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$, is a complete unitary invariant for such a tuple. We prove that the characteristic function satisfies a natural transformation law under biholomorphic mappings of the unit ball. We also characterize all operator-…
We continue our study of operator algebras with contractive approximate identities (cais). In earlier papers we have introduced and studied a new notion of positivity in operator algebras, with an eye to extending certain $C^*$-algebraic results and theories to more general algebras. In the first part of this paper we do a more systematic development of this positivity and its associated ordering, proving many foundational facts. In much of this it is not necessary that the algebra have an approximate identity. In the second part we study interesting examples of operator algebras with cais, wh…
A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on a…

We study fixed points of contractive convolution operators associated to contractive quantum measures on locally compact quantum groups. We characterise the existence of non-zero fixed points respectively on $L^\infty(\mathbb{G})$ and on $C_0(\mathbb{G})$, and exploit these results to obtain for example the structure of the fixed points on the non-commutative $L_p$-spaces. Some consequences for the fixed points of classical convolution operators and Herz-Schur multipliers are also indicated.
We construct a contractive, idempotent, MASA bimodule map on B(H), whose range is not a ternary subalgebra of B(H). Our method uses a crossed-product to reduce the existence of such an idempotent map to an analogous problem about the ranges of idempotent maps that are equivariant with respect to a group action and Hamana's theory of G-injective envelopes.
Motivated by the definition of a semigroup compactification of a locally compact group and a large collection of examples, we introduce the notion of an (operator) "homogeneous left dual Banach algebra" (HLDBA) over a (completely contractive) Banach algebra $A$. We prove a Gelfand-type representation theorem showing that every HLDBA over $A$ has a concrete realization as an (operator) homogeneous left Arens product algebra: the dual of a subspace of $A^*$ with a compatible (matrix) norm and a type of left Arens product ${\scriptscriptstyle \square}$. Examples include all left Arens product alg…
We describe a general method to construct completely bounded idempotent mappings on operator spaces, starting from amenable semigroups of completely bounded mappings. We then explore several applications of that method to injective operator spaces, fixed points of completely contractive mappings, Toeplitz operators, dynamical systems and similarity orbits of group representat ions.
Let G be a locally compact group. We use the canonical operator space structure on the spaces $L^p(G)$ for $p \in [1,\infty]$ introduced by G. Pisier to define operator space analogues $OA_p(G)$ of the classical Figa-Talamanca-Herz algebras $A_p(G)$. If $p \in (1,\infty)$ is arbitrary, then $A_p(G) \subset OA_p(G)$ such that the inclusion is a contraction; if p = 2, then $OA_2(G) \cong A(G)$ as Banachspaces spaces, but not necessarily as operator spaces. We show that $OA_p(G)$ is a completely contractive Banach algebra for each $p \in (1,\infty)$, and that $OA_q(G) \subset OA_p(G)$ completely …
The closed one-sided ideals of a C*-algebra are exactly the closed subspaces supported by the orthogonal complement of a closed projection. Let A be a (not necessarily selfadjoint) subalgebra of a unital C*-algebra B which contains the unit of B. Here we characterize the right ideals of A with left contractive approximate identity as those subspaces of A supported by the orthogonal complement of a closed projection in B** which also lies in the weak* closure of A. Although this seems quite natural, the proof requires a set of new techniques which may may be viewed as a noncommutative version o…
We develop the theory of invariant structure preserving and free functions on a general structured topological space. We show that an invariant structure preserving function is pointwise approximiable by the appropriate analog of polynomials in the strong topology and therefore a free function. Moreover, if a domain of operators on a Hilbert space is polynomially convex, the set of free functions satisfies a Oka-Weil Kaplansky density type theorem -- contractive functions can be approximated by contractive polynomials.
Suppose $\mathcal{T}_{+}(E)$ is the tensor algebra of a $W^{*}$-correspondence $E$ and $H^{\infty}(E)$ is the associated Hardy algebra. We investigate the problem of extending completely contractive representations of $\mathcal{T}_{+}(E)$ on a Hilbert space to ultra-weakly continuous completely contractive representations of $H^{\infty}(E)$ on the same Hilbert space. Our work extends the classical Sz.-Nagy - Foiaş functional calculus and more recent work by Davidson, Li and Pitts on the representation theory of Popescu's noncommutative disc algebra.
This paper is a continuation of the program started by Ruan in 2003, of developing real operator space theory. In particular, we develop the theory of real operator algebras. We also show among other things that the injective envelope, C*-envelope and non-commutative Shilov boundary exist for a real operator space. We develop real one-sided M-ideal theory and characterize one-sided M-ideals in real C*-algebras and real operator algebras with contractive approximate identity.
We describe majorization between selfadjoint operators in a $σ$-finite II$_\infty$ factor $(\mathcal{M},τ)$ in terms of simple spectral relations. For a diffuse abelian von Neumann subalgebra $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{M}$ with trace-preserving conditional expectation $E_{\mathcal{A}}$, we characterize the closure in the measure topology of the image through $E_{\mathcal{A}}$ of the unitary orbit of a selfadjoint operator in $\mathcal{M}$ in terms of majorization (i.e., a Schur-Horn theorem). We also obtain similar results for the contractive orbit of positive operators in $\mathcal{M}$ and …
It is known that the non-zero part of compact defect operators of Berger-Coburn-Lebow pairs (BCL pairs in short) of isometries are diagonal operators of the form \[ \begin{bmatrix} I_1 & & & \\ & D & & \\ & & - I_2 & \\ & & & - D \\ \end{bmatrix}, \] where $I_1$ and $I_2$ are the identity operators and $D$ is a positive contractive diagonal operator. We discuss the question of constructing an irreducible BCL pair from a diagonal operator of the above type. The answer to this question is sometimes in the affirmative and sometimes in the negative. This also answers a part of the question raised …
In a unital C*-algebra with a faithful trace functional $τ$, the set $D_τ(A)$ of positive $ρ\in A$ of trace τ(ρ)=1 is an algebraic analogue of the space of density matrices (the set of all positive matrices of a fixed dimension of unit trace). Motivated by the literature concerning the metric properties of the space of density matrices, the present paper studies the density space $D_τ(A)$ in terms of the Bures metric. Linear maps on A that map $D_τ(A)$ back into itself are positive and trace preserving, hence, they may be viewed as an algebraic analogue of a quantum channel, which are studied …
We introduce a noncommutative analogue of the absolute value of a regular operator acting on a noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-space. We equally prove that two classical operator norms, the regular norm and the decomposable norm are identical. We also describe precisely the regular norm of several classes of regular multipliers. This includes Schur multipliers and Fourier multipliers on some unimodular locally compact groups which can be approximated by discrete groups in various senses. A main ingredient is to show the existence of a bounded projection from the space of completely bounded $\mat…
Let A be a closed subalgebra of a C*-algebra, that is a closed algebra of Hilbert space operators. We generalize to such operator algebras $A$ several key theorems and concepts from the theory of classical function algebras. In particular we consider several problems that arise when generalizing classical function algebra results involving characters ((contractive) homomorphisms into the scalars) on the algebra. For example, the Jensen inequality, the related Bishop-Ito-Schreiber theorem, and the theory of Gleason parts. We will usually replace characters (classical function algebra case) by D…
The C*-envelope of the limit algebra (or limit space) of a contractive regular system of digraph algebras (or digraph spaces) is shown to be an approximately finite C*-algebra and the direct system for the C*-envelope is determined explicitly.
We show that two operator algebras are strongly Morita equivalent (in the sense of Blecher, Muhly and Paulsen) if and only if their categories of operator modules are equivalent via completely contractive functors. Moreover, any such functor is completely isometrically isomorphic to the Haagerup tensor product (= interior tensor product) with a strong Morita equivalence bimodule.
For $p\in (1,\infty)$, we study representations of étale groupoids on $L^{p}$-spaces. Our main result is a generalization of Renault's disintegration theorem for representations of étale groupoids on Hilbert spaces. We establish a correspondence between $L^{p}$-representations of an étale groupoid $G$, contractive $L^{p}$-representations of $C_{c}(G)$, and tight regular $L^{p}$-representations of any countable inverse semigroup of open slices of $G$ that is a basis for the topology of $G$. We define analogs $F^{p}(G)$ and $F_{\mathrm{red}}^{p}(G)$ of the full and reduced groupoid C*-algebras u…
