Ranges of bimodule projections and reflexivity

We develop a general framework for reflexivity in dual Banach spaces, motivated by the question of when the weak* closed linear span of two reflexive masa-bimodules is automatically reflexive. We establish an affirmative answer to this question in a number of cases by examining two new classes of masa-bimodules, defined in terms of ranges of masa-bimodule projections. We give a number of corollaries of our results concerning operator and spectral synthesis, and show that the classes of masa-bimodules we study are operator synthetic if and only if they are strong operator Ditkin.

Gauge-equivariant Hilbert bimodules and crossed products by endomorphisms

C*-endomorphisms arising from superselection structures with non-trivial centre define a 'rank' and a 'first Chern class'. Crossed products by such endomorphisms involve the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a vector bundle having the above-mentioned rank and first Chern class, and can be used to construct a duality for abstract (nonsymmetric) tensor categories vs. group bundles acting on (nonsymmetric) Hilbert bimodules. On the ranges of bimodule projections

We develop a symbol calculus for normal bimodule maps over a masa that is the natural analogue of the Schur product theory. Using this calculus we are able to easily give a complete description of the ranges of contractive normal bimodule idempotents that avoids the theory of J*-algebras. We prove that if $P$ is a normal bimodule idempotent and $\|P\| < 2/\sqrt{3}$ then $P$ is a contraction. We finish with some attempts at extending the symbol calculus to non-normal maps.

Decomposability of bimodule maps

Consider a unital C*-algebra A, a von Neumann algebra M, a unital sub-C*-algebra C of A and a unital *-homomorphism $π$ from C to M. Let u: A --> M be a decomposable map (i.e. a linear combination of completely positive maps) which is a C-bimodule map with respect to $π$. We show that u is a linear combination of C-bimodule completely positive maps if and only if there exists a projection e in the commutant of $π(C)$ such that u is valued in eMe and $eπ(.)e$ has a completely positive extension A --> eMe.

Decompositions of Reflexive Bimodules over Maximal Abelian Selfadjoint Algebras

We generalize the notion of `diagonal' from the class of CSL algebras to masa bimodules. We prove that a reflexive masa bimodule decomposes as a sum of two bimodules, the diagonal and a module generalizing the w*-closure of the Jacobson radical of a CSL algebra. The latter module turns out to be reflexive, a result which is new even for CSL algebras. We show that the projection onto the direct summand contained in the diagonal is contractive and preserves compactness and reduces rank of operators.
