We study contractive projections, isometries, and real positive maps on algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. We develop a symbol calculus for normal bimodule maps over a masa that is the natural analogue of the Schur product theory. Using this calculus we are able to easily give a complete description of the ranges of contractive normal bimodule idempotents that avoids the theory of J*-algebras. We prove that if $P$ is a normal bimodule idempotent and $\|P\| < 2/\sqrt{3}$ then $P$ is a contraction. We finish with some attempts at extending the symbol calculus to non-normal maps.
We construct a contractive, idempotent, MASA bimodule map on B(H), whose range is not a ternary subalgebra of B(H). We characterize the $C^\star$-algebras for which openness of projections in their second duals is preserved under Murray-von Neumann equivalence. They are precisely the extensions of the annihilator $C^\star$-algebras by the commutative $C^\star$-algebras. We also show that the annihilator $C^\star$-algebras are precisely the $C^\star$-algebras for which all projections in their second duals are open.
