The characteristic function has been an important tool for studying completely non unitary contractions on Hilbert spaces. In this note, we consider completely non-coisometric contractive tuples of commuting operators on a Hilbert space $\clh$. We show that the characteristic function, which is now an operator valued analytic function on the open Euclidean unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^n$, is a complete unitary invariant for such a tuple. We prove that the characteristic function satisfies a natural transformation law under biholomorphic mappings of the unit ball. We also characterize all operator-valued analytic functions which arise as characteristic functions of pure commuting contractive tuples.
Here we study dilations of q-commuting tuples. In [BBD] the authors gave the correspondence between the two standard dilations of commuting tuples and here these results have been extended to q-commuting tuples. We are able to do this when q-coefficients `$q_{ij}$' are of modulus one. We introduce `maximal q-commuting subspace ' of a $n$-tuple of operators and `standard q-commuting dilation'. Our main result is that the maximal q-commuting subspace of the standard noncommuting dilation of q-commuting tuple is the `standard q-commuting dilation'. We also introduce q-commuting Fock space as the …
We introduce a notion called `maximal commuting piece' for tuples of Hilbert space operators. Given a commuting tuple of operators forming a row contraction there are two commonly used dilations in multivariable operator theory. Firstly there is the minimal isometric dilation consisting of isometries with orthogonal ranges and hence it is a noncommuting tuple. There is also a commuting dilation related with a standard commuting tuple on Boson Fock space. We show that this commuting dilation is the maximal commuting piece of the minimal isometric dilation. We use this result to classify all rep…
The joint Brown measure and joint Haagerup--Schultz projections for tuples of commuting operators in a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful tracial state are investigated, and several natural properties are proved for these. It is shown that the support of the joint Brown measure is contained in the Taylor joint spectrum of the tuple, and also in the ostensibly smaller left Harte spectrum. A simultaneous upper triangularization result for finite commuting tuples is proved and the joint Brown measure and joint Haagerup--Schultz projections are shown to be have well under the Arens multi…
In the paper one considers the local structure of the Fredholm joint spectrum of commuting $n$-tuples of operators. A connection between the spatial characteristics of operators and the algebraic invariant of the corresponding coherent sheaves is investigated. A notion of Weyl joint spectrum of commuting $n$-tuple is introduced.
Given a commuting d-tuple $\bar T=(T_1,...,T_d)$ of otherwise arbitrary nonnormal operators on a Hilbert space, there is an associated Dirac operator $D_{\bar T}$. Significant attributes of the d-tuple are best expressed in terms of $D_{\bar T}$, including the Taylor spectrum and the notion of Fredholmness. In fact, {\it all} properties of $\bar T$ derive from its Dirac operator. We introduce a general notion of Dirac operator (in dimension $d=1,2,...$) that is appropriate for multivariable operator theory. We show that every abstract Dirac operator is associated with a commuting $d$-tuple, an…
We show that for a commuting n-tuple of hermitian operators, with perfect spectrum, the essential centre of the algebra of operators commuting with the n-tuple mod a diagonalization ideal arises from the C*-algebra of the n-tuple. This answers a question for normal operators and the Hilbert-Schmidt class connected to K-theory for almost normal operators.
We study dilations of finite tuples of normal, completely positive and completely contractive maps (which we call CP-maps) acting on a von Neumann algebra, and commuting according to a graph G. We show that if G is acyclic, then a tuple commuting according to it has a simultaneous *-endomorphic dilation, which also commutes according to G. Conversely, if G has a cycle, we exhibit an example of a tuple of CP-maps commuting according to G, which does not have an *-endomorphic dilation commuting according to G. To achieve these results we use dilation theory of representations of subproduct syste…
Let $f: \mathbb{R}^d \to\mathbb{R}$ be a Lipschitz function. If $B$ is a bounded self-adjoint operator and if $\{A_k\}_{k=1}^d$ are commuting bounded self-adjoint operators such that $[A_k,B]\in L_1(H),$ then $$\|[f(A_1,\cdots,A_d),B]\|_{1,\infty}\leq c(d)\|\nabla(f)\|_{\infty}\max_{1\leq k\leq d}\|[A_k,B]\|_1,$$ where $c(d)$ is a constant independent of $f$, $\mathcal{M}$ and $A,B$ and $\|\cdot\|_{1,\infty}$ denotes the weak $L_1$-norm. If $\{X_k\}_{k=1}^d$ (respectively, $\{Y_k\}_{k=1}^d$) are commuting bounded self-adjoint operators such that $X_k-Y_k\in L_1(H),$ then $$\|f(X_1,\cdots,X_d)-…
Non-commutative versions of Arveson's curvature invariant and Euler characteristic for a commuting $n$-tuple of operators are introduced. The non-commutative curvature invariant is sensitive enough to determine if an $n$-tuple is free. In general both invariants can be thought of as measuring the freeness or curvature of an $n$-tuple. The connection with dilation theory provides motivation and exhibits relationships between the invariants. A new class of examples is used to illustrate the differences encountered in the non-commutative setting and obtain information on the ranges of the invaria…
We show that every multivariable contractive weighted shift dilates to a tuple of commuting unitaries, and hence satisfies von Neumann's inequality. This answers a question of Lubin and Shields. We also exhibit a closely related $3$-tuple of commuting contractions, similar to Parrott's example, which does not dilate to a $3$-tuple of commuting unitaries.
We show that whenever a contractive $k$-tuple $T$ on a finite dimensional space $H$ has a unitary dilation, then for any fixed degree $N$ there is a unitary $k$-tuple $U$ on a finite dimensional space so that $q(T) = P_H q(U) |_H$ for all polynomials $q$ of degree at most $N$.
A contractive $n$-tuple $A=(A_1,...,A_n)$ has a minimal joint isometric dilation $S=(S_1,...,S_n)$ where the $S_i$'s are isometries with pairwise orthogonal ranges. This determines a representation of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra. When $A$ acts on a finite dimensional space, the \wot-closed nonself-adjoint algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ generated by $S$ is completely described in terms of the properties of $A$. This provides complete unitary invariants for the corresponding representations. In addition, we show that the algebra $\mathfrak{S}$ is always hyper-reflexive. In the last section, we describe s…
In this document we study the local path connectivity of sets of $m$-tuples of commuting normal matrices with some additional geometric constraints in their joint spectra. In particular, given $\varepsilon>0$ and any fixed but arbitrary $m$-tuple $\mathbf{X}\in {M_n(\mathbb{C})}^m$ in the set of $m$-tuples of pairwise commuting normal matrix contractions, we prove the existence of paths between arbitrary $m$-tuples in the intersection of the previously mentioned sets of $m$-tuples in ${M_n(\mathbb{C})}^m$ and the $δ$-ball $B_ð(\mathbf{X},δ)$ centered at $\mathbf{X}$ for some $δ>0$, with respec…
We study analytic models of operators of class $C_{\cdot 0}$ with natural positivity assumptions. In particular, we prove that for an $m$-hypercontraction $T \in C_{\cdot 0}$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, there exists a Hilbert space $\mathcal{E}$ and a partially isometric multiplier $θ\in \mathcal{M}(H^2(\mathcal{E}), A^2_m(\mathcal{H}))$ such that \[\mathcal{H} \cong \mathcal{Q}_θ = A^2_m(\mathcal{H}) \ominus θH^2(\mathcal{E}), \quad \quad \mbox{and} \quad \quad T \cong P_{\mathcal{Q}_θ} M_z|_{\mathcal{Q}_θ},\]where $A^2_m$ is the weighted Bergman space and $H^2$ is the Hardy space over …
The goal of the paper is to study the structure of the k-tuples of doubly $Λ$-commuting row isometries and the $C^*$-algebras they generate from the point of view of noncommutative multivariable operator theory. We obtain Wold decompositions, in this setting, and use them to classify the $k$-tuples of doubly $Λ$-commuting row isometries up to a unitary equivalence. We introduce a universal model in this setting, describe its invariant subspaces, and develop a dilation theory on $Λ$-polyballs.
Motivated by Ball, Li, Timotin and Trent's Schur-Agler class version of commutant lifting theorem, we introduce a class, denoted by $\mathcal{P}_n(\mathcal{H})$, of $n$-tuples of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We always assume that $n \geq 3$. The importance of this class of $n$-tuples stems from the fact that the von Neumann inequality or the existence of isometric dilation does not hold in general for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions on Hilbert spaces (even in the level of finite dimensional Hilbert spaces). Under some rank-finiteness assumptions, w…
We classify tuples of (not necessarily commuting) isometries that admit von Neumann-Wold decomposition. We introduce the notion of twisted isometries for tuples of isometries and prove the existence of orthogonal decomposition for such tuples. The former classification is partially inspired by a result that was observed more than three decades ago by Gaspar and Suciu. And the latter result generalizes Popovici's orthogonal decompositions for pairs of commuting isometries to general tuples of twisted isometries which also includes the case of tuples of commuting isometries. Our results unify al…
The celebrated Sz.-Nagy and Foias and Ando theorems state that a single contraction, or a pair of commuting contractions, acting on a Hilbert space always possesses isometric dilation and subsequently satisfies the von Neumann inequality for polynomials in $\mathbb{C}[z]$ or $\mathbb{C}[z_1, z_2]$, respectively. However, in general, neither the existence of isometric dilation nor the von Neumann inequality holds for $n$-tuples, $n \geq 3$, of commuting contractions. The goal of this paper is to provide a taste of the isometric dilations, the von Neumann inequality and a sharper version of von …
A contraction $T$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be pure if the sequence $\lbrace T^{*n} \rbrace_{n}$ converges to $0$ in the strong operator topology. In this article, we prove that for contractions $T$, which commute with certain tractable tuples of commuting operators $X = (X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ on $\mathcal{H}$, the following statements are equivalent: (i) $T$ is a pure contraction on $\mathcal{H}$, (ii) the compression $P_{\mathcal{W}(X)}T|_{\mathcal{W}(X)}$ is a pure contraction, where $\mathcal{W}(X)$ is the wandering subspace corresponding to the tuple $X$. An operator-valued m…
An n-tuple (n \geq 2), T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n), of commuting bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \mathcal{H} is doubly commuting if T_i T_j^* = T_j^* T_i for all $1 \leq i < j \leq n$. If in addition, each T_i \in C_{\cdot 0}, then we say that T is a doubly commuting pure tuple. In this paper we prove that a doubly commuting pure tuple $T$ can be dilated to a tuple of shift operators on some suitable vector-valued Hardy space H^2_{\mathcal{D}_{T^*}}(\mathbb{D}^n). As a consequence of the dilation theorem, we prove that there exists a closed subspace \mathcal{S}_T of the form \[\mathcal{…
In this paper, we are interested to study the stability of the ascent of a mutually commuting n-tuple T submitted to a perturbation by an n-tuple S which commutes mutually with T. This study lead us to generalize some well known results for operators and introduce a class of n-tuples in which we obtain the stability of the ascent of T.
We present some general theorems about operator algebras that are algebras of functions on sets, including theories of local algebras, residually finite dimensional operator algebras and algebras that can be represented as the scalar multipliers of a vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert space. We use these to further develop a quantized function theory for various domains that extends and unifies Agler's theory of commuting contractions and the Arveson-Drury-Popescu theory of commuting row contractions. We obtain analogous factorization theorems, prove that the algebras that we obtain are …
Ando's theorem states that any pair of commuting contractions on a Hilbert space can be dilated to a pair of commuting unitaries. Parrott presented an example showing that an analogous result does not hold for a triple of pairwise commuting contractions. We generalize both of these results as follows. Any n-tuple of contractions that commute according to a graph without a cycle can be dilated to an n-tuple of unitaries that commute according to that graph. Conversely, if the graph contains a cycle, we construct a counterexample.
In this document we study the local connectivity of the sets whose elements are $m$-tuples of pairwise commuting normal matrix contractions. Given $\varepsilon>0$, we prove that there is $δ>0$ such that for any two $m$-tuples of pairwise commuting normal matrix contractions $\mathbf{X}:=(X_1,\ldots,X_m)$ and $\tilde{\mathbf{X}}:=(\tilde{X}_1,\ldots,\tilde{X}_m)$ that are $δ$-close with respect to some suitable distance $ð$ in $(\mathbb{C}^{n\times n})^m$, we can find a $m$-tuple of matrix paths (homotopies) connecting $\mathbf{X}$ to $\mathbf{\tilde{X}}$ relative to the intersection of some $\…
The behavior of fermionic systems depends on the geometry of the system and the symmetry class of the Hamiltonian and observables. Almost commuting matrices arise from band-projected position observables in such systems. One expects the mathematical behavior of almost commuting Hermitian matrices to depend on two factors. One factor will be the approximate polynomial relations satisfied by the matrices. The other factor is what algebra the matrices are in, either the matrices over A for A the real numbers, A the complex numbers or A the algebra of quaternions. There are potential obstructions …
Given a contractive tuple of Hilbert space operators satisfying certain $A$-relations we show that there exists a unique minimal dilation to generators of Cuntz-Krieger algebras or its extension by compact operators. This Cuntz-Krieger dilation can be obtained from the classical minimal isometric dilation as a certain maximal $A$-relation piece. We define a maximal piece more generally for a finite set of polynomials in $n$ noncommuting variables. We classify all representations of Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\mathcal O}_A$ obtained from dilations of commuting tuples satisfying $A$-relations. The…
In hybrid normed ideal perturbations of $n$-tuples of operators, the normed ideal is allowed to vary with the component operators. We begin extending to this setting the machinery we developed for normed ideal perturbations based on the modulus of quasicentral approximation and an adaptation of our non-commutative generalization of the Weyl--von~Neumann theorem. For commuting $n$-tuples of hermitian operators, the modulus of quasicentral approximation remains essentially the same when $\cC_n^-$ is replaced by a hybrid $n$-tuple $\cC_{p_1,\dots}^-,\dots,\cC^-_{p_n}$, $p_1^{-1} + \dots + p_n^{-1…
In the present article, we investigate a possibility of a real-valued map on the space of tuples of commuting trace-class self-adjoint operators, which behaves like the usual trace map on the space of trace-class linear operators. It turns out that such maps are related with continuous group homomorphisms from the Milnor's $K$-group of the real numbers into the additive group of real numbers. Using this connection, it is shown that any such trace map must be trivial.
Using the spectral subspaces obtained in [HS], Brown's results on the Brown measure of an operator in a type II_1 factor (M,tr) are generalized to finite sets of commuting operators in M. It is shown that whenever T_1,..., T_n in M are mutually commuting operators, there exists one and only one compactly supported Borel probability measure mu_{T_1,..., T_n} on C^n such that for all alpha_1,..., alpha_n in C, tr(log|alpha_1 T_1+ ... + alpha_n T_n - 1|) is the integral of log|alpha_1 z_1 + ... + alpha_n z_n-1| w.r.t mu_{T_1,...,T_n}. Moreover, for every polynomial q in n commuting variables, mu_…
It is known that the non-zero part of compact defect operators of Berger-Coburn-Lebow pairs (BCL pairs in short) of isometries are diagonal operators of the form \[ \begin{bmatrix} I_1 & & & \\ & D & & \\ & & - I_2 & \\ & & & - D \\ \end{bmatrix}, \] where $I_1$ and $I_2$ are the identity operators and $D$ is a positive contractive diagonal operator. We discuss the question of constructing an irreducible BCL pair from a diagonal operator of the above type. The answer to this question is sometimes in the affirmative and sometimes in the negative. This also answers a part of the question raised …
We explore aspects of dilation theory in the finite dimensional case and show that for a commuting $n$-tuple of operators $T=(T_1,...,T_n) $ acting on some finite dimensional Hilbert space $H$ and a compact set $X\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ the following are equivalent: 1. $T$ has a normal $ X$-dilation. 2. For any $m\in \mathbb{N}$ there exists some finite dimensional Hilbert space $K$ containing $H$ and a tuple of commuting normal operators $N=(N_1,...,N_n)$ acting on $K$ such that $$ q(T)=P_Hq(N)|_H$$ for all polynomials $q$ of degree at most $m$ and such that the joint spectrum of $N$ is contain…
We develop a functional calculus for $d$-tuples of non-commuting elements in a Banach algebra. The functions we apply are free analytic functions, that is nc functions that are bounded on certain polynomial polyhedra.
We study the K_0 group of the commutant modulo a normed ideal of an n-tuple of commuting Hermitian operators in some of the simplest cases. In case n=1, the results, under some technical conditions are rather complete and show the key role of the absolutely continuous part when the ideal is the trace-class. For a commuting n-tuple, n>2 and the Lorentz (n, 1) ideal, we show under an absolute continuity assumption that the commutant determines a canonical direct summand in K_0. Also, certain properties involving the compact ideal, established assuming quasicentral approximate units mod the norme…
The objective of this paper is to study wandering subspaces for commuting tuples of bounded operators on Hilbert spaces. It is shown that, for a large class of analytic functional Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}_K$ on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^n$, wandering subspaces for restrictions of the multiplication tuple $M_z = (M_{z_1}, \ldots ,M_{z_n})$ can be described in terms of suitable $\mathcal{H}_K$-inner functions. We prove that $\mathcal{H}_K$-inner functions are contractive multipliers and deduce a result on the multiplier norm of quasi-homogenous polynomials as an application. Along the way w…
