In the present article, we investigate a possibility of a real-valued map on the space of tuples of commuting trace-class self-adjoint operators, which behaves like the usual trace map on the space of trace-class linear operators. It turns out that such maps are related with continuous group homomorphisms from the Milnor's $K$-group of the real numbers into the additive group of real numbers. Using this connection, it is shown that any such trace map must be trivial.
We show that a pair of almost commuting self-adjoint, symmetric matrices is close to a pair of commuting self-adjoint, symmetric matrices (in a uniform way). Moreover we prove that the same holds with self-dual in place of symmetric. The notion of self-dual Hermitian matrices is important in physics when studying fermionic systems that have time reversal symmetry. Since a symmetric, self-adjoint matrix is real, we get a real version of Huaxin Lin's famous theorem on almost commuting matrices. Similarly the self-dual case gives a version for matrices over the quaternions. We prove analogous res…
Let $f: \mathbb{R}^d \to\mathbb{R}$ be a Lipschitz function. If $B$ is a bounded self-adjoint operator and if $\{A_k\}_{k=1}^d$ are commuting bounded self-adjoint operators such that $[A_k,B]\in L_1(H),$ then $$\|[f(A_1,\cdots,A_d),B]\|_{1,\infty}\leq c(d)\|\nabla(f)\|_{\infty}\max_{1\leq k\leq d}\|[A_k,B]\|_1,$$ where $c(d)$ is a constant independent of $f$, $\mathcal{M}$ and $A,B$ and $\|\cdot\|_{1,\infty}$ denotes the weak $L_1$-norm. If $\{X_k\}_{k=1}^d$ (respectively, $\{Y_k\}_{k=1}^d$) are commuting bounded self-adjoint operators such that $X_k-Y_k\in L_1(H),$ then $$\|f(X_1,\cdots,X_d)-…
In the paper, we prove an analogue of the Kato-Rosenblum theorem in a semifinite von Neumann algebra. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a countably decomposable, properly infinite, semifinite von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $τ$ be a faithful normal semifinite tracial weight of $\mathcal M$. Suppose that $H$ and $H_1$ are self-adjoint operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}$. We show that if $H-H_1$ is in $\mathcal{M}\cap L^{1}\left(\mathcal{M},τ\right)$, then the ${norm}$ absolutely continuous parts of $H$ and $H_1$ are unitarily equivalent. This implies that the real par…
Lin's theorem states that for all $ε> 0$, there is a $δ> 0$ such that for all $n \geq 1$ if self-adjoint contractions $A,B \in M_n(\mathbb{C})$ satisfy $\|[A,B]\|< δ$ then there are self-adjoint contractions $A',B' \in M_n(\mathbb{C})$ with $[A',B']=0$ and $\|A-A'\|,\|B-B'\|<ε$. We present fully explained and corrected details of the approach in arXiv:0808.2474, which was the first version of Lin's theorem to provide asymptotic estimates. We also apply this method to the case where $B$ is a normal matrix with spectrum lying in some nice 1-dimensional subset of $\mathbb{C}$.
We show that if A_1, A_2, ... , A_n are square matrices, each of them is either unitary or self-adjoint, and they almost commute with respect to the rank metric, then one can find commuting matrices B_1, B_2, ... , B_n that are close to the matrices A_i in the rank metric.
Let $U$ be a compact semisimple Lie group with complexification $G$ and associated Cartan involution $Θ$. Let $ν$ be an involutive complex Lie group automorphism of $G$ commuting with $Θ$, and consider the associated semisimple real Lie group $G_ν = \{g\in G\mid ν(g) = Θ(g)\}$. We consider $q$-deformed analogues of the $U$-orbits of the quotient space $G_ν\backslash G$, and determine for these the associated von Neumann algebra and invariant state.
We consider commutative C* -algebras of Toeplitz operators in the weighted Bergman space on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{\mathbf{n}}$. For the algebras of elliptic type we find a new representation, namely as the algebra of operators which are functions of certain collections of commuting unbounded self-adjoint operators in the Bergman space.
We study solutions to the free stochastic differential equation $dX_t = dS_t - \half DV(X_t)dt$, where $V$ is a locally convex polynomial potential in $m$ non-commuting variables. We show that for self-adjoint $V$, the law $μ_V$ of a stationary solution is the limit law of a random matrix model, in which an $m$-tuple of self-adjoint matrices are chosen according to the law $\exp(-N \textrm{Tr}(V(A_1,...,A_m)))dA_1... dA_m$. We show that if $V=V_β$ depends on complex parameters $β_1,...,β_k$, then the law $μ_V$ is analytic in $β$ at least for those $β$ for which $V_β$ is locally convex. In part…
This thesis is devoted to the study of joint spectral multipliers for a system of pairwise commuting, self-adjoint left-invariant differential operators L_1,...,L_n on a connected Lie group G. Under the assumption that the algebra generated by L_1,...,L_n contains a weighted subcoercive operator - a notion due to ter Elst and Robinson (J. Funct. Anal., 157(1):88--163, 1998), including positive elliptic operators, sublaplacians and Rockland operators - we prove that L_1,...,L_n are (essentially) self-adjoint and strongly commuting on L^2(G). Moreover, we perform an abstract study of such a syst…
We study restriction and extension properties for states on C$^*$-algebras with an eye towards hyperrigidity of operator systems. We use these ideas to provide supporting evidence for Arveson's hyperrigidity conjecture. Prompted by various characterizations of hyperrigidity in terms of states, we examine unperforated pairs of self-adjoint subspaces in a C$^*$-algebra. The configuration of the subspaces forming an unperforated pair is in some sense compatible with the order structure of the ambient C$^*$-algebra. We prove that commuting pairs are unperforated, and obtain consequences for hyperr…
A closed subspace of a Banach space $\cX$ is almost-invariant for a collection $\cS$ of bounded linear operators on $\cX$ if for each $T \in \cS$ there exists a finite-dimensional subspace $\cF_T$ of $\cX$ such that $T \cY \subseteq \cY + \cF_T$. In this paper, we study the existence of almost-invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension for various classes of Banach and Hilbert space operators. We also examine the structure of operators which admit a maximal commuting family of almost-invariant subspaces. In particular, we prove that if $T$ is an operator on a separable Hilbert s…
The joint spectral theory of a system of pairwise commuting self-adjoint left-invariant differential operators L_1,...,L_n on a connected Lie group G is studied, under the hypothesis that the algebra generated by them contains a "weighted subcoercive operator" of ter Elst and Robinson (J. Funct. Anal. 157 (1998) 88-163). The joint spectrum of L_1,...,L_n in every unitary representation of G is characterized as the set of the eigenvalues corresponding to a particular class of (generalized) joint eigenfunctions of positive type of L_1,...,L_n. Connections with the theory of Gelfand pairs are est…
The paper is devoted to the following question: consider two self-adjoint $n\times n$-matrices $H_1,H_2$, $\|H_1\|\le 1$, $\|H_2\|\le 1$, such that their commutator $[H_1,H_2]$ is small in some sence. Do there exist such self-adjoint commuting matrices $A_1,A_2$, such that $A_i$ is close to $H_i$, $i=1,2$? The answer to this question is positive if the smallness is considered with respect to the operator norm. The following result was established by Huaxin Lin: if $\|[H_1,H_2]\|=δ$, then we can choose $A_i$ such that $\|H_i-A_i\|\le C(δ)$, $i=1,2$, where $C(δ)\to 0$ as $δ\to 0$. Notice that $C…
