Let P and Q be the canonical operators acting on the Hilbert space of all L^2 functions on the real line, defined appropriately on a common dense domain. The derivations D_P(A) = i(PA - AP) and D_Q(A) = i(QA - AQ) act on the *-algebra of all integral operators having smooth kernels of compact support, for example, and one may consider the noncommutative "Laplacian"
L(A) = D_P^2(A) + D_Q^2(A), as a linear mapping of this *-algebra into itself.
L generates a semigroup of normal completely positive maps on B(H), and we establish some basic properties of this semigroup and its minimal dilation to an E_0-semigroup. In particular, we show that the minimal dilation is pure, has no normal invariant states, and we discuss the significance of those facts for the interaction theory developed in a previous paper (appearing in the current issue of Comm. Math. Phys.).
There are similar results for the canonical commutation relations with n degrees of freedom, n = 2, 3, ....
Let G be second countable locally compact Hausdorff groupoid with a continuous Haar system. We remove the assumption of amenability in a theorem of Clark about groupoids whose $C^*$-algebras are CCR. We show that if the groupoid C*-algebra of G is CCR then the orbits of G are closed.
Suppose $G$ is a second countable, locally compact, Hausdorff groupoid with a fixed left Haar system. Let $\go/G$ denote the orbit space of $G$ and $C^*(G)$ denote the groupoid $C^*$-algebra. Suppose that the isotropy groups of $G$ are amenable. We show that $C^*(G)$ is CCR if and only if $\go/G$ is a $T_1$ topological space and all of the isotropy groups are CCR. We also show that $C^*(G)$ is GCR if and only if $\go/G$ is a $T_0$ topological space and all of the isotropy groups are GCR.
Kaplansky introduced the notions of CCR and GCR $C^*$-algebras because they have a tractable representation theory. Many years later, he introduced the notions of CCR and GCR rings. In this paper we characterize when the algebra of an ample groupoid over a field is CCR and GCR. The results turn out to be exact analogues of the corresponding characterization of locally compact groupoids with CCR and GCR $C^*$-algebras. As a consequence, we classify the CCR and GCR Leavitt path algebras.
We calculate the real rank and stable rank of CCR algebras which either have only finite dimensional irreducible representations or have finite topological dimension. We show that either rank of A is determined in a good way by the ranks of an ideal I and the quotient A/I in four cases: When A is CCR; when I has only finite dimensional irreducible representations; when I is separable, of generalized continuous trace and finite topological dimension, and all irreducible representations of I are infinite dimensional; or when I is separable, stable, has an approximate identity consisting of proje…
We discuss how the canonical commutation relations must be modified in order to make appropriate numerical models of quantum systems. The C*-algebras associated with the discretized CCRs are the non-commutative spheres of Bratteli, Elliott, Evans and Kishimoto.
The $C^*$-algebra associated with the twisted CCR constructed by W. Pusz and S.L. Woronowicz is considered. It is proved that the $C^*$-algebras corresponding to different values of parameter $0<=μ<1$ are isomorphic. It is proved that Fock representation is faithful on both *-algebra and $C^*$-algebra levels.
I introduce yet another way to associate a C*-algebra to a graph and construct a simple nuclear C*-algebra that has irreducible representations both on a separable and a nonseparable Hilbert space.
Extending a result of the first author and Katsura, we prove that for every UHF algebra $A$ of infinite type, in every uncountable cardinality $κ$ there are $2^κ$ nonisomorphic approximately matricial C*-algebras with the same $K_0$ group as $A$. These algebras are group \cstar-algebras `twisted' by prescribed canonical commutation relations (CCR), and they can also be considered as nonseparable generalizations of noncommutative tori.
Geometric positions of square roots of quasi-free states of CCR algebras are investigated together with an explicit formula for transition amplitudes among them.
For $q \in \mathbb{R}$, $|q| < 1$ we consider the universal enveloping $C^*$-algebra of a $*$-algebra of $q$-canonical commutation relations ($q$-CCR), which is generated by $a_1, \ldots, a_n$ subject to the relations \[ a_i^* a_j = δ_{ij} 1 + q a_j a_i^* . \] It has a distinguished representation $π_F$ called the Fock representation, which is believed to be faithful. In this article we denote the image of the universal enveloping $C^*$-algebra of $q$-CCR in the Fock representation by $\beth_q$. The question whether $C^*$-isomorphism $\beth_q \simeq \beth_0$ holds has been considered in the li…
Geometric positions of square roots of coherent states of CCR algebras are investigated along with an explicit formula for transition amplitudes among them, which is a natural extension of our previous results on quasifree states and will provide a new insight into quasi-equivalence problems of quasifree states.
A system of matrix units in the Weyl algebra of convolution type is constructed with the aid of a Gaussian element so that it includes von Neumann's minimal projection, which explicitly shows that the associated C*-algebra is a compact operator algebra. The spectral decomposition of an arbitrary Gaussian element is then worked out in terms of the diagonal projections in the matrix units.
It is shown how to use non-commutative stopping times in order to stop the CCR flow of arbitrary index and also its isometric cocycles, i.e., left operator Markovian cocycles on Boson Fock space. Stopping the CCR flow yields a homomorphism from the semigroup of stopping times, equipped with the convolution product, into the semigroup of unital endomorphisms of the von Neumann algebra of bounded operators on the ambient Fock space. The operators produced by stopping cocycles themselves satisfy a cocycle relation.
We initiate a study of E-semigroups over convex cones. We prove a structure theorem for E-semigroups which leave the algebra of compact operators invariant. Then we study in detail the CCR flows, E$_0$semigroups constructed from isometric representations, by describing their units and gauge groups. We exhibit an uncountable family of $2-$parameter CCR flows, containing mutually non-cocycle-conjugate E$_0$-$semigroups.
We consider an abstract Wick ordering as a family of relations on elements a_i and define *-algebras by these relations. The relations are given by a fixed operator T:h\otimes h --> h \otimes h, where h is one-particle space, and they naturally define both a *-algebra and an inner-product space H_T, <.,.>_T. If a_i^* denotes the adjoint, i.e., <a_iϕ,ψ>_T=<ϕ,a_i^*ψ>_T, then we identify when <.,.>_T is positive semidefinite (the positivity question). In the case of deformations of the CCR-relations (the q_{ij}-CCR and the twisted CCR's), we work out the universal C*-algebras A, and we prove that…
We introduce a new construction of $E_0$-semigroups, called generalized CCR flows, with two kinds of descriptions: those arising from sum systems and those arising from pairs of $C_0$-semigroups. We get a new necessary and sufficient condition for them to be of type III, when the associated sum system is of finite index. Using this criterion, we construct examples of type III $E_0$-semigroups, which can not be distinguished from $E_0$-semigroups of type I by the invariants introduced by Boris Tsirelson. Finally, by considering the local von Neumann algebras, and by associating a type III facto…
Representations of CCR algebras in spaces of entire functions are classified on the basis of isomorphisms between the Heisenberg CCR algebra A_H and star algebras of holomorphic operators. To each representations of such algebras, satisfying a regularity and a reality condition, one can associate isomorphisms and inner products so that they become Krein star representations of A_H, with the gauge transformations implemented by a continuous U(1) group of Krein isometries. Conversely, any holomorphic Krein representation of A_H, having the gauge transformations implemented as before and no null …
The Weyl algebra,- the usual C*-algebra employed to model the canonical commutation relations (CCRs), has a well-known defect in that it has a large number of representations which are not regular and these cannot model physical fields. Here, we construct explicitly a C*-algebra which can reproduce the CCRs of a countably dimensional symplectic space (S,B) and such that its representation set is exactly the full set of regular representations of the CCRs. This construction uses Blackadar's version of infinite tensor products of nonunital C*-algebras, and it produces a "host algebra" (i.e. a ge…
We study a family of representations of the canonical commutation relations (CCR)-algebra (an infinite number of degrees of freedom), which we call admissible. The family of admissible representations includes the Fock-vacuum representation. We show that, to every admissible representation, there is an associated Gaussian stochastic calculus, and we point out that the case of the Fock-vacuum CCR-representation in a natural way yields the operators of Malliavin calculus. And we thus get the operators of Malliavin's calculus of variation from a more algebraic approach than is common. And we obta…
An E_0-semigroup acting on B(H) is called pure if the intersection of the ranges $α_t(B(H))$, $t>0$, is the algebra of scalars. We determine all pure E_0-semigroups which have a weakly continuous invariant state $ω$ and which are minimal in an appropriate sense. In such cases, for every normal state $ρ$ there is convergence to equilibrium in the trace norm $\lim_{t\to\infty}\| ρ\circα_t - ω\| = 0.$ A normal state $ω$ with this property is called an absorbing state. Such E_0-semigroups mest be cocycle perturbations of CAR/CCR flows, and we develop systematic methods for constructing those pertu…
The heat semigroup on discrete hypercubes is well-known to be contractive over $L_p$-spaces for $1<p<\infty$. A question of Mendel and Naor \cite{MN14} concerns a stronger contraction property in the tail spaces, which is known as the heat-smoothing conjecture. Eskenazis and Ivanisvili \cite{EI20} considered a Gaussian analog of this conjecture and resolved some special cases. In particular, they proved that heat-smoothing type conjecture holds for holomorphic functions in the Gaussian spaces with sharp constants. In this paper, we prove analogous sharp inequalities for holomorphic subalgebras…
We prove that $(λ_g\mapsto e^{-t|g|^r}λ_g)_{t>0}$ defines a completely bounded semigroup of multipliers on the von Neuman algebra of hyperbolic groups for all real number $r$. One ingredient in the proof is the observation that a construction of Ozawa allows to characterize the radial multipliers that are bounded on every hyperbolic graph, partially generalizing results of Haagerup--Steenstrup--Szwarc and Wysoczański. Another ingredient is an upper estimate of trace class norms for Hankel matrices, which is based on Peller's characterization of such norms.
It is known that every semigroup of normal completely positive maps $P = {P_t: t\geq 0}$ of $B(H)$, satisfying $P_t(1) = 1$ for every $t\geq 0$, has a minimal dilation to an E_0-semigroup acting on $B(K)$ for some Hilbert space K containing H. The minimal dilation of P is unique up to conjugacy. In a previous paper a numerical index was introduced for semigroups of completely positive maps and it was shown that the index of P agrees with the index of its minimal dilation to an E_0-semigroup. However, no examples were discussed, and no computations were made. In this paper we calculate the inde…
Heat-invariants are a class of spectral invariants of Laplace-type operators on compact Riemannian manifolds that contain information about the geometry of the manifold, e.g., the metric and connection. Since Brownian motion solves the heat equation, these invariants can be obtained studying Brownian motion on manifolds. In this article, we consider Brownian motion on the Toeplitz algebra, discrete Heisenberg group algebras, and non-commutative tori to define Laplace-type operators and heat-semigroups on these C*-bialgebras. We show that their traces can be $ζ$-regularized and compute "heat-tr…
An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analogue of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these 'global' semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix s…
In this paper we study two semigroups of completely positive unital self-adjoint maps on the von Neumann algebras of the free orthogonal quantum group $O_N^+$ and the free permutation quantum group $S_N^+$. We show that these semigroups satisfy ultracontractivity and hypercontractivity estimates. We also give results regarding spectral gap and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities.
Based on the observation that Cacic [10]'s characterization of almost commutative spectral triples as Clifford module bundles can be pushed to endomorphim algebras of Dirac bundles, with the geometric Dirac operator related to the Dirac operator of the spectral triple by a perturbation, the question of complete positivity of the heat semigroups generated by connection laplacian and Dirac and Kostant's cubic Dirac laplacians is approached using spin geometry and C *-Dirichlet forms. The geometric heat semigroups for on endomorphosm algebras of spinor bundles are shown to be quantum dynamical se…
