We introduce symmetrizing operators of the polynomial ring $A[x]$ in the varible $x$ over a ring $A$. When $A$ is an algebra over a field $k$ these operators are used to characterize the monic polynomials $F(x)$ of degree $n$ in $A[x]$ such that $A\otimes_k k[x]_{(x)}/(F(x))$ is a free $A$-module of rank $n$. We use the characterization to determine the Hilbert scheme parameterizing subschemes of length $n$ of $k[x]_{(x)}$.
We study infinite intersections of open subschemes and the corresponding intersection of Hilbert schemes. If $\{U_i\}$ is the collection of open subschemes of a variety $X$ containing a fixed point $P$, then we show that the Hilbert functor of flat and finite families on the spectrum of the local ring of $P$ is given by the intersection of ${\Cal H}_i$, where ${\Cal H}_i$ is the Hilbert functor of flat and finite families on $U_i$. In particular we show that the Hilbert functor of flat and finite families on the spectrum of the local ring of $P$ is representable by a scheme.
The purpose of this paper is to study the Zariski tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing subschemes of a smooth surface which are supported at a single point. We give a lower bound on the dimension of the tangent space in general and show the bound is sharp for subschemes of the affine plane cut out by monomials. Furthermore for monomial subschemes we give an explicit combinatorial formula for the dimension of the tangent space.
Let S be a smooth projective surface, and consider the following two subvarieties of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing closed subschemes of S of length n: A = {subschemes with support in a fixed point of S} B = {subschemes with support in one (variable) point of S} A and B have complementary dimensions in the Hilbert scheme. We prove that the intersection number [A].[B] = n(-1)^(n-1), answering a question by H. Nakajima.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Fix integers $n$ and $b$ with $n\geq 3$ and $1\leq b\leq n-1.$ Let $T^d_k$ be the moduli space of hypersurfaces $[F]$ in $\mathbb{P}^n_k$ of degree $l$ whose singular locus contains a subscheme of dimension $b$ with Hilbert polynomial among the Hilbert polynomials of $b$-dimensional integral closed subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We prove that when $l$ is sufficiently large and $2\leq d\leq \frac{l+1}{2},$ any irreducible component $Z$ of $T^d_k$ satisfies $Z=T^1_k$ or $\dim Z<\dim T^1_k.$
In this paper we consider the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{p(t)}^n$ parameterizing subschemes of $P^n$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(t)$, and we investigate its locus containing points corresponding to schemes with regularity lower than or equal to a fixed integer $r'$. This locus is an open subscheme of $Hilb_{p(t)}^n$ and, for every $s\geq r'$, we describe it as a locally closed subscheme of the Grasmannian $Gr_{p(s)}^{N(s)}$ given by a set of equations of degree $\leq \mathrm{deg}(p(t))+2$ and linear inequalities in the coordinates of the Plücker embedding.
We consider the Hilbert scheme Hilb^{d+1}(C^d) of (d+1) points in affine d-space C^d (d > 2), which includes the square of any maximal ideal. We describe equations for the most symmetric affine open subscheme of Hilb^{d+1}(C^d), in terms of Schur modules. In addition we prove that Hilb^{d+1}(C^d) is reducible for n>d>11.
Two approaches for determining Hilbert functions of fat point subschemes of $\mathbb P^2$ are demonstrated. A complete determination of the Hilbert functions which occur for 9 double points is given using the first approach, extending results obtained in a previous paper using the second approach. In addition the second approach is used to obtain a complete determination of the Hilbert functions for $n\geq 9$ $m$-multiple points for every $m$ if the points are smooth points of an irreducible plane cubic curve. Additional results are obtained using the first approach for $n\geq 9$ double points…
We prove that any element in the Chow ring of the Hilbert scheme $\text{Hilb}_n$ of $n$ points on a smooth surface $S$ is a universal class, i.e. the pushforward of a polynomial in the Chern classes of the universal subscheme on $\text{Hilb}_n \times S^k$ for some $k \in \mathbb{N}$, with coefficients pulled back from the Chow of $S^k$.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. The question of irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme Hilb_d P^n and its Gorenstein locus for various d was studied in [CEVV8, CN9, CN10, CN11]. In this short paper we prove that the subschemes corresponding to the Gorenstein algebras having Hilbert function (1,5,5,1) are smoothable i.e. lie in the closure of the locus of smooth subschemes. Among the Gorenstein algebras of length 12 the smoothability of algebras having such Hilbert function seems to be the most inapproachable using non-direct tools e.g. structural theorems.
In previous papers the authors gave formulae for generating series of classes (in the Grothendieck ring of complex quasi-projective varieties) of Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional subschemes on smooth varieties and on orbifolds in terms of certain local data and the, so called, power structure over the corresponding ring. Here we give an analogue of these formulae for equivariant (with respect to an action of a finite group on a smooth variety) Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional subschemes and compute some local generating series for an action of the cyclic group on a smooth surface.
The Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in the affine plane contains the open subscheme parametrizing $n$ distinct points in the affine plane, and the closed subscheme parametrizing ideals of codimension $n$ supported at the origin of the affine plane. Both schemes admit Białynicki-Birula decompositions into moduli spaces of ideals with prescribed lexicographic Gröbner deformations. We show that both decompositions are stratifications in the sense that the closure of each stratum is a union of certain other strata. We show that the corresponding two partial orderings on the set of of monomial ideals …
Let $S$ be an irreducible smooth projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. For a positive integer $d$, let ${\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the zero-dimensional subschemes of $S$ of length $d$. For a vector bundle $E$ on $S$, let ${\mathcal H}(E)\, \longrightarrow\, {\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ be its Fourier--Mukai transform constructed using the structure sheaf of the universal subscheme of $S\times {\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ as the kernel. We prove that two vector bundles $E$ and $F$ on $S$ are isomorphic if the vector bundles ${\mathcal H}(E)$ and ${\mathcal H}(F)$ …
Let H_{ab} be the equivariant Hilbert scheme parametrizing the 0-dimensional subschemes of the affine plane invariant under the natural action of the one-dimensional torus T_{ab}:={(t^{-b},t^a), t\in k^*}. We compute the irreducible components of H_{ab}: they are in one-one correspondence with a set of Hilbert functions. As a by-product of the proof, we give new proofs of results by Ellingsrud and Stromme, namely the main lemma of the computation of the Betti numbers of the Hilbert scheme H^l parametrizing the 0-dimensional subschemes of the affine plane of length l and a description of Bialyn…
We construct the derived version of the Hilbert scheme parametrizing subschemes in a given projective scheme X with given Hilbert polynomial h. This is a dg-manifold (smooth dg-scheme) RHilb_h(X) which carries a natural family of commutative (up to homotopy) dg-algebras, which over the usual Hilbert scheme is just given by truncations of the homogeneous coordinate rings of subschemes in X. In particular, RHilb_h(X) differs from RQuot_h(O_X), the derived Quot scheme constructed in our previous paper (math.AG/9905174) which carries only a family of A-infinity modules over the coordinate algebra …
Closed subschemes in projective space with a fixed Hilbert polynomial are parametrized by a Hilbert scheme. We classify the smooth ones. We identify numerical conditions on a polynomial that completely determine when the Hilbert scheme is smooth. We also reinterpret these smooth Hilbert schemes as generalized partial flag varieties and describe the subschemes being parametrized.
The criterion for an affine primary algebra over the field to be integral, is proven. Using this criterion we give a simple proof that Hilbert scheme of 0-dimensional subschemes of length $l$ of nonsingular $d$-dimensional algebraic variety is reduced for all $d$ and $l$.
We discuss two conjectures by Francesco Severi and Joe Harris about the irreducibility and the dimension of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing smooth projective curves of given degree and genus.
Let $X$ be the projective plane, a Hirzebruch surface, or a general $K3$ surface. In this paper, we study the birational geometry of various nested Hilbert schemes of points parameterizing pairs of zero-dimensional subschemes on $X$. We calculate the nef cone for two types of nested Hilbert schemes: $X^{[n+1,n]}$ and universal families. As an application, we recover a theorem of Butler on syzygies on Hirzebruch surfaces.
A recent paper by the first and third authors together with Sabourin raised the question of what the possible Hilbert functions are for fat point subschemes of the form $2p_1+...+2p_r$, for all possible choices of $r$ distinct points in the projective plane. We study this problem for $r$ points in the plane over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic in case either $r \le 8$ or the points lie on a (possibly reducible) conic. In either case, it follows from work of the second author that there are only finitely many configuration types of points, where our notion of confi…
Let I be the ideal corresponding to a set of general points $p_1,...,p_n \in P^2$. There recently has been progress in showing that a naive lower bound for the Hilbert functions of symbolic powers $I^{(m)}$ is in fact attained when n>9. Here, for m sufficiently large, the minimal free graded resolution of $I^{(m)}$ is determined when n>9 is an even square, assuming only that this lower bound on the Hilbert function is attained. Under ostensibly stronger conditions (that are nonetheless expected always to hold), a similar result is shown to hold for odd squares, and for infinitely many m for ea…
Let S be a K3 surface and S^[n] the Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes of S. Over the cartesian square of S^[n] there exists a natural reflexive rank 2n-2 coherent sheaf E, which is locally free away from the diagonal. The fiber of E, over a pair of ideal sheaves of distinct subschemes, is the vector space of extensions of the first ideal sheaf by the second. We prove that E is slope stable if the rank of the Picard group of S is less than or equal to 19. The Chern classes of End(E) are known to be monodromy invariant. Consequently, the sheaf End(E) is polystable-hyperholomorphic.
We investigate the geography of Hilbert schemes parametrizing closed subschemes of projective space with specified Hilbert polynomials. We classify Hilbert schemes with unique Borel-fixed points via combinatorial expressions for their Hilbert polynomials. These expressions naturally lead to an arrangement of nonempty Hilbert schemes as the vertices of an infinite full binary tree. Here we discover regularities in the geometry of Hilbert schemes. Specifically, under natural probability distributions on the tree, we prove that Hilbert schemes are irreducible and nonsingular with probability grea…
The Hilbert scheme $\mathbf{Hilb}_{p(t)}^{n}$ parametrizes closed subschemes and families of closed subschemes in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ with a fixed Hilbert polynomial $p(t)$. It is classically realized as a closed subscheme of a Grassmannian or a product of Grassmannians. In this paper we consider schemes over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and we present a new proof of the existence of the Hilbert scheme as a subscheme of the Grassmannian $\mathbf{Gr}_{p(r)}^{N(r)}$, where $N(r)= h^0 (\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^n}(r))$. Moreover, we exhibit explicit equations defining it in th…
We study completely the Hilbert scheme and punctual Hilbert scheme of a nodal curve, and the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of curves acquiring a node. The results are then extended, less completely, to flag Hilbert schemes, parametrizing chains of subschemes. We find, notably, that if the total space $X$ of a family $X/B$ is smooth (over an algebraically closed field $\k$), then the relative Hilbert scheme $Hilb_m(X/B)$ is smooth over $\k$ and the flag Hilbert schemes are normal and locally complete intersection, but generally singular.
We study the decompositions of Hilbert schemes induced by the Schubert cell decomposition of the Grassmannian variety and show that Hilbert schemes admit a stratification into locally closed subschemes along which the generic initial ideals remain the same. We give two applications: First, we give a completely geometric proofs of the existence of the generic initial ideals and of their Borel fixed properties. Secondly, we prove that when a Hilbert scheme of nonconstant Hilbert polynomial is embedded by the Grothendieck-Plücker embedding of a high enough degree, it must be degenerate.
The Hilbert scheme of projective 3-folds of codimension 3 or more that are linear scrolls over the projective plane or over a smooth quadric surface or that are quadric or cubic fibrations over the projective line is studied. All known such threefolds of degree from 7 to 11 are shown to correspond to smooth points of an irreducible component of their Hilbert scheme, whose dimension is computed. A relationship with the locus of good determinantal subschemes is investigated
Let $X$ be a projective variety, homogeneous under a linear algebraic group. We show that the diagonal of $X$ belongs to a unique irreducible component $H_X$ of the Hilbert scheme of $X\times X$. Moreover, $H_X$ is isomorphic to the ``wonderful completion'' of the connected automorphism group of $X$; in particular, $H_X$ is non-singular. We describe explicitly the degenerations of the diagonal in $X\times X$, that is, the points of $H_X$; these subschemes of $X\times X$ are reduced and Cohen-Macaulay.
Let S be a smooth projective surfaces and S^[n] the Hilbert scheme of zero-dimensional subschemes of S of length n. We proof that the class of S^[n] in the complex cobordism ring depends only on the class of the surface itself. Moreover, we compute the cohomology and holomorphic Euler characterisitcs of certain tautological sheaves on S^[n] and prove results on the general structure of certain integrals over polynomials in Chern classes of tautological sheaves.
The power structure over the Grothendieck (semi)ring of complex quasi-projective varieties constructed by the authors is used to express the generating series of classes of Hilbert schemes of zero-dimensional subschemes on a smooth quasi-projective variety as an exponent of that for the complex affine space of the same dimension. Specializations of this relation give formulae for generating series of such invariants of the Hilbert schemes of points as the Euler characteristic and the Hodge-Deligne polynomial.
In this paper we study the Hilbert scheme, Hilb(P), of equidimensional locally Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes, with a special look to surfaces in P^4 and 3-folds in P^5, and the Hilbert scheme stratification H_{c} of constant cohomology. For every (X) in Hilb(P) we define a number δ_X in terms of the graded Betti numbers of the homogeneous ideal of X and we prove that 1 + δ_X - \dim_{(X)} H_{c} and 1 + δ_X - \dim T_{c} are CI-biliaison invariants where T_{c} is the tangent space of H_{c} at (X). As a corollary we get a formula for the dimension of any generically smooth component of H…
We call the scheme parameterizing homogeneous ideals with fixed initial ideal the Gröbner scheme. We introduce a Białynicki-Birula decomposition of the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^{P}_n$ for any Hilbert polynomial $P$ such that the cells are the Gröbner schemes in set-theoretically. Then we obtain a computable homology formula for smooth Hilbert schemes. As a corollary of our argument, we show that the Gröbner scheme for a monomial ideal defining a smooth point in the Hilbert scheme is smooth.
We follow the lead of Bocci and Chiantini and show how differences in the invariant alpha can be used to classify certain classes of subschemes of P^3. Specifically, we will seek to classify arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes of P^3 in the manner Bocci and Chiantini classified points in P^2. The first section will seek to motivate our consideration of the invariant alpha by relating it to the Hilbert function and gamma, following the work of Bocci and Chiantini, and Dumnicki, et. al. The second section will contain our results classifying arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codim…
We seek to characterize homology classes of Lagrangian projective spaces embedded in irreducible holomorphic-symplectic manifolds, up to the action of the monodromy group. This paper addresses the case of manifolds deformation-equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-three subschemes of a K3 surface. The class of the projective space in the cohomology ring has prescribed intersection properties, which translate into Diophantine equations. Possible homology classes correspond to integral points on an explicit elliptic curve; our proof entails showing that the only such point is two-torsion.
We analyse the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ i.e. the open subscheme parameterising zero-dimensional Gorenstein subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We give new sufficient criteria for smoothability and smoothness of points of the Gorenstein locus. In particular we prove that this locus is irreducible when $d\leq 13$ and find its components when $d = 14$. The proof is relatively self-contained and it does not rely on a computer algebra system. As a by--product, we give equations of the fourth secant variety to the $d$-th Veronese reembedding of $…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let $H_G(d,N)$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $H(d,N)$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes of degree $d$ in the projective N-space. We proved in a previous paper that $H_G(d,N)$ is irreducible for $d\le9$ and $N\ge1$. In the present paper we prove that also $H_G(10,N)$ is irreducible for each $N\ge1$, giving also a complete description of its singular locus.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface, and H^d(X) the Hilbert scheme parametrising the length d zero-dimensional subschemes of X. We compute the rational Chow ring A^*(H^d(X))\_Q. More precisely, if T is the two-dimensional torus contained in X, we compute the rational equivariant Chow ring A\_T^*(H^d(X))\_Q and the usual Chow ring is an explicit quotient of the equivariant Chow ring. The case of some quasi-projective toric surfaces such as the affine plane are described by our method too.
Let π: X -> S be a morphism of algebraic stacks that is locally of finite presentation with affine stabilizers. We prove that there is an algebraic S-stack, the Hilbert stack, parameterizing proper algebraic stacks mapping quasi-finitely to X. This was previously unknown, even for a morphism of schemes.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 3$. Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective surface over $k$. Fix an integer $n \geq 1$ and let ${\mathcal{H}{\it ilb}}_X^n$ be the Hilbert scheme parameterizing effective $0$-cycles of length $n$ on $X$. The aim of the present article is to find the $S$-fundamental group scheme and Nori's fundamental group scheme of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}{\it ilb}_X^n$.
The Hilbert scheme H^d_n of n points in A^d contains an irreducible component R^d_n which generically represents n distinct points in A^d. We show that when n is at most 8, the Hilbert scheme H^d_n is reducible if and only if n = 8 and d >= 4. In the simplest case of reducibility, the component R^4_8 \subset H^4_8 is defined by a single explicit equation which serves as a criterion for deciding whether a given ideal is a limit of distinct points. To understand the components of the Hilbert scheme, we study the closed subschemes of H_n^d which parametrize those ideals which are homogeneous and …
Let HH_{ab}(H) be the equivariant Hilbert scheme parametrizing the zero dimensional subschemes of the affine plane k^2, fixed under the one dimensional torus T_{ab}={(t^{-b},t^a), t\in k^*} and whose Hilbert function is H. This Hilbert scheme admits a natural stratification in Schubert cells which extends the notion of Schubert cells on Grassmannians. However, the incidence relations between the cells become more complicated than in the case of Grassmannians. In this paper, we give a necessary condition for the closure of a cell to meet another cell. In the particular case of Grassmannians, it…
Let W be an affine variety equipped with an action of a reductive group G. The invariant Hilbert scheme is a moduli space which classifies the G-stable closed subschemes of W such that the affine algebra is the direct sum of simple G-modules with previously fixed finite multiplicities. In this thesis, we first study the invariant Hilbert scheme, denoted H. It parametrizes the GL(V)-stable closed subschemes Z of W=n1 V \oplus n2 V^* such that k[Z] is isomorphic to the regular representation of GL(V) as GL(V)-module. If dim(V)<3, we show that H is a smooth variety, so that the Hilbert-Chow morph…
Let X be a closed subscheme and let HF(X,-) and hp(X,-) denote, respectively, the Hilbert function and the Hilbert polynomial of X. We say that X has bipolynomial Hilbert function if HF(X,d)=min{hp(P^n,d),hp(X,d)} for every non-negative integer d. We show that if X consists of a plane and generic lines, then X has bipolynomial Hilbert function. We also conjecture that generic configurations of non-intersecting linear spaces have bipolynomial Hilbert function.
The T-graph of a multigraded Hilbert scheme records the zero and one-dimensional orbits of the T = (K^*)^n action on the Hilbert scheme induced from the T-action on A^n. It has vertices the T-fixed points, and edges the one-dimensional T-orbits. We give a combinatorial necessary condition for the existence of an edge between two vertices in this graph. For the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane, we give an explicit combinatorial description of the equations defining the scheme parameterizing all one-dimensional torus orbits whose closures contain two given monomial ideals. For this Hilbert …
We consider the following open questions. Fix a Hilbert function, $h$, that occurs for a reduced zero-dimensional subscheme of $\mathbb P^2$. Among all subschemes, $X$, with Hilbert function $h$, what are the possible Hilbert functions and graded Betti numbers for the first infinitesimal neighborhood, $Z$, of $X$ (i.e. the double point scheme supported on $X$)? Is there a minimum ($h^{\min}$) and maximum ($h^{\max}$) such function? The numerical information encoded in $h$ translates to a {\it type vector}, which allows us to find unions of points on lines, called {\it linear configurations}, w…
Let $S$ be the affine plane regarded as a toric variety with an action of the 2-dimensional torus $T$. We study the equivariant Chow ring $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ of the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb^n(S)$ with equivariant coefficients inverted. We compute base change formulas in $A_{K}^*(Hilb^n(S))$ between the natural bases introduced by Nakajima, Ellingsrud and Strømme, and the classical basis associated with the fixed points. We compute the equivariant commutation relations between creation/annihilation operators. We express the class of the small diagonal in $Hilb^n(S)$ in terms of the equiva…
Let X be a smooth, connected, dimension n, quasi-projective variety imbedded in \PP_N. Consider integers {k_1,...,k_r}, with k_i>0, and the Hilbert Scheme H_{k_1,...,k_r}(X) of aligned, finite, degree \sum k_i, subschemes of X, with multiplicities k_i at points x_i (possibly coinciding). The expected dimension of H_{k_1,...,k_r}(X) is 2N-2+r-(\sum k_i)(N-n). We study the locus of points where H_{k_1,...,k_r}(X) is not smooth of expected dimension and we prove that the lines carrying this locus do not fill up \PP_N
We present a proof of embedded desingularization for closed subschemes which does not make use of Hilbert-Samuel function and avoids Hironaka's notion of normal flatness. This proof, already sketched in [A course on constructive desingularization and equivariance. In {\em Resolution of singularities (Obergurgl, 1997)}, vol. 181 {\em Progr. Math.}, Birkhäuser, 2000.] page 224, is done by showing that desingularization of a closed subscheme $X$, in a smooth sheme W, is achieved by taking an algorithmic principalization for the ideal $I(X)$, associated to the embedded scheme $X$.
The purpose of this paper is to explore the geometry and establish the slope stability of tautological vector bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on smooth surfaces. By establishing stability in general we complete a series of results of Schlickewei and Wandel who proved the slope stability of these vector bundles for Hilbert schemes of 2 points or 3 points on K3 or abelian surfaces with Picard group restrictions. In exploring the geometry we show that every sufficiently positive semistable vector bundle on a smooth curve arises as the restriction of a tautological vector bundle on the Hilber…
In this paper we try to further explore the linear model of the moduli of rational maps. Our attempt yields following results. Let $X\subset \mathbf P^n$ be a generic hypersurface of degree $h$. Let $R_d(X, h)$ denote the open set of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing irreducible rational curves of degree $d$ on $X$. We obtain that (1) If $4\leq h\leq n-1$, $R_d(X, h)$ is an integral, local complete intersection of dimension \begin{equation} (n+1-h)d+n-4. \end{equation} (2) If furthermore $(h^2-n)d+h\leq 0$ and $h\geq 4$, in addition to part (1), $R_d(X, h)$ is also rationally connected.
The Hilbert scheme of n points in the projective plane parameterizes degree n zero-dimensional subschemes of the projective plane. We examine the dual cones of effective divisors and moving curves on the Hilbert scheme. By studying interpolation, restriction, and stability properties of certain vector bundles on the plane we fully determine these cones for just over three fourths of all values of n. A general Steiner bundle on P^N is a vector bundle admitting a linear resolution of a particular form. We complete the classification of slopes of semistable Steiner bundles on P^N by showing every…
