We study completely the Hilbert scheme and punctual Hilbert scheme of a nodal curve, and the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of curves acquiring a node. The results are then extended, less completely, to flag Hilbert schemes, parametrizing chains of subschemes. We find, notably, that if the total space $X$ of a family $X/B$ is smooth (over an algebraically closed field $\k$), then the relative Hilbert scheme $Hilb_m(X/B)$ is smooth over $\k$ and the flag Hilbert schemes are normal and locally complete intersection, but generally singular.
In this paper, we show the full flag Hilbert scheme of points of nodal curves has only complete intersection singularities. We study the Hilbert scheme of points of the cusp curve and show the punctual Hilbert scheme is isomorphic to \mathbb{P}^1. Furthermore Hilbert scheme has only one singularty along the punctual one.
We study the existence of components with the expected number of moduli of the Hilbert scheme of integral nodal curves $C \subset \mathbb {P}^r$ with prescribed degree, arithmetic genus and number of singular points.
We study the structure of the relative Hilbert scheme for a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its natural cycle map to the relative symmetric product. We show that the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We discuss some applications and connections, notably with birational geometry and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces. Revised version corrects some minor errors.
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We determine the relevant cotangent sheaves and complexes. We determine the structure of certain projective bundles called node scrolls, which play an important role in the geometry of Hilbert schemes.
We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautologic…
We study intersection theory on the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal-or-smooth curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension. We introduce an additive group called 'discriminant module', generated by diagonal loci, node scrolls, and twists thereof, and determine the action of the discriminant or big diagonal divisor on this group by intersection. We show that this suffices to determine arbitrary polynomials in Chern classes, in particular Chern numbers, for the tautological vector bundles on the Hilbert schemes, which are closely related to enumerative geometry. The latest version inc…
We prove that a general determinantal hypersurface of dimension 3 is nodal. Moreover, in terms of Chern classes associated with bundle morphisms, we derive a formula for the intersection homology Euler characteristic of a general determinantal hypersurface.
We prove by Hilbert-Mumford criterion that a slope stable polarized weighted pointed nodal curve is Chow asymptotic stable. This generalizes the result of Caporaso on stability of polarized nodal curves, and of Hasset on weighted pointed stable curves polarized by the weighted dualizing sheaves. It also solved a question raised by Mumford and Gieseker to prove the Chow asymptotic stability of stable nodal curves by Hilbert-Mumford criterion.
We study the Picard variety of the Fano surface of nodal and mildly cuspidal cubic threefolds in arbitrary characteristic by relating divisors on the Fano surface to divisors on the symmetric product of a curve of genus 4.
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautological bundles on the relative Hilbert scheme, which has applications to enumerative geometry.
Mehta and Seshadri have proved that the set of equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental group of a punctured compact Riemann surface, can be identified with equivalence classes of stable parabolic bundles of parabolic degree zero on the compact Riemann surface. In this note, we discuss the Mehta-Seshadri correspondence over an irreducible projective curve with at most nodes as singularities.
Let V^{r}_{d,g, δ} be the Hilbert scheme of nodal curves in P^r of degree d and arithmetic genus g with δnodes. Under suitable numerical assumptions on d and g, for every 0 \le δ\le g we construct an irreducible component of V^{r}_{d,g, δ} having the expected number of moduli.
We develop a formula for tautological integrals over geometric subsets of the Hilbert scheme of points on complex manifolds. As an illustration of the theory, we derive a new iterated residue formula for the number of nodal curves in sufficiently ample linear systems.
We establish a striking connection between Abramovich's and Vistoli's twisted bundles and Gieseker vector bundles. This note grew out of an attempt to understand a recent draft of Seshadri.
Suppose B=F[x,y,z]/h is the homogeneous coordinate ring of a characteristic p degree 3 irreducible plane curve C with a node. Let J be a homogeneous (x,y,z)-primary ideal and n -> e_n be the Hilbert-Kunz function of B with respect to J. Let q=p^n. When J=(x,y,z), Pardue (see R. Buchweitz, Q. Chen. Hilbert-Kunz functions of cubic curves and surfaces. J. Algebra 197 (1997). 246-267) showed that e_n=(7q^2)/3-q/3-R where R=5/3 if q is congruent to 2 (3), and is 1 otherwise. We generalize this, showing that e_n= (mu q^2) + (alpha q) - R where R only depends on q mod 3. We describe alpha and R in te…
In this short note, I point out that results of Ballico and Kool--Shende--Thomas together imply that on $K3$, Enriques, and Abelian surfaces, if $L$ is a very ample and $(2p_a(L)-2g-1)$-spanned line bundle, then the equigeneric Severi variety $V_{g}(L)$ of all curves in $|L|$ having genus $g$ is non-empty, irreducible, of the expected dimension, and its general member is a $(p_a(L)-g)$-nodal curve.
Let N_d be the number of degree d, nodal, rational plane curves through 3d-1 points in the complex projective plane. The number of degree d>=3, nodal, elliptic plane curves with a fixed (general) j-invariant through 3d-1 points is found to be {d-1 \choose 2}*N_d.
We identify several classes of curves $C:f=0$, for which the Hilbert vector of the Jacobian module $N(f)$ can be completely determined, namely the 3-syzygy curves, the maximal Tjurina curves and the nodal curves, having only rational irreducible components. A result due to Hartshorne, on the cohomology of some rank 2 vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$, is used to get a sharp lower bound for the initial degree of the Jacobian module $N(f)$, under a semistability condition.
Studying degenerations of moduli spaces of semistable principal bundles on smooth curves leads to the problem of constructing and studying moduli spaces on singular curves. In this note, we will see that the moduli spaces of $δ$-semistable pseudo bundles on a nodal curve constructed by the first author become, for large values of $δ$, the moduli spaces for semistable singular principal bundles. The latter are reasonable candidates for degenerations and a potential basis of further developments as on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we find a notion of semistability for principal bundle…
The subject of this paper is an algebraic version of the irregular Riemann-Hilbert correspondence which was mentioned in [arXiv:1910.09954] by the author. In particular, we prove an equivalence of categories between the triangulated category of algebraic holonomic D-modules on a smooth algebraic variety and the one of algebraic C-constructible enhanced ind-sheaves. Moreover we show that there exists a t-structure on the triangulated category of algebraic C-constructible enhanced ind-sheaves whose heart is equivalent to the abelian category of algebraic holonomic D-modules. Furthermore we shall…
Let $W\subset \mathbb {P}^n$, $n\ge 3$, be a degree $k$ hypersurface. Consider a "general" reducible, but connected, curve $Y\subset \mathbb {P}^n$, for instance a sufficiently general connected and nodal union of lines with $p_a(Y)=0$, i.e. a tree of lines. We study the Hilbert function of the set $Y\cap W$ with cardinality $k°(Y)$ and prove when it is the expected one. We give complete classification of the exceptions for $k=2$ and for $n=k=3$. We apply these results and tools to the case in which $Y$ is a smooth curve with $\mathcal {O}_Y(1)$ non-special.
In this note we will study the Hilbert 12th problem for a primitive CM field, and the corresponding Stark conjectures. Using the idea of Mirror Symmetry, we will show how to generate all the class fields of a given primitive CM field, thus complete the work of Shimura- Taniyama-Weil.
Let S be a complex smooth projective surface and L be a line bundle on S. Göttsche conjectured that for every integer r, the number of r-nodal curves in |L| is a universal polynomial of four topological numbers when L is sufficiently ample. We prove Göttsche's conjecture using the algebraic cobordism group of line bundles on surfaces and degeneration of Hilbert schemes of points. In addition, we prove the the Göttsche-Yau-Zaslow Formula which expresses the generating function of the numbers of nodal curves in terms of quasi-modular forms and two unknown series.
We derive a sharp decomposition formula for the state polytope of the Hilbert point and the Hilbert-Mumford index of reducible varieties by using the decomposition of characters and basic convex geometry. This proof captures the essence of the decomposition of the state polytopes in general, and considerably simplifies an earlier proof by the author and Jaekwang Kim which uses a careful analysis of initial ideals of reducible varieties.
In [4], Kuroda generalized Roberts' counterexample \cite{Roberts} to the fourteenth problem of Hilbert. The counterexample is given as the kernel of a locally nilpotent derivation on a polynomial ring. We replace his construction of the invariant elements by a more straightforward construction and give a more precise form of invariant elements.
Under natural hypotheses we give an upper bound on the dimension of families of singular curves with hyperelliptic normalizations on a surface S with p_g(S) >0 via the study of the associated families of rational curves in Hilb^2(S). We use this result to prove the existence of nodal curves of geometric genus 3 with hyperelliptic normalizations, on a general K3 surface, thus obtaining specific 2-dimensional families of rational curves in its Hilbert square. We describe two infinite series of examples of general, primitively polarized K3's such that their Hilbert squares contain a IP^2 or a thr…
We determine the Hilbert-Kunz function of plane elliptic curves in odd characteristic, as well as over arbitrary fields the generalized Hilbert-Kunz functions of nodal cubic curves. Together with results of K. Pardue and P. Monsky, this completes the list of Hilbert-Kunz functions of plane cubics. Combining these results with the calculation of the (generalized) Hilbert-Kunz function of Cayley's cubic surface, it follows that in each degree and over any field of positive characteristic there are curves resp. surfaces taking on the minimally possible Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.
An open question is whether the Hilbert scheme of points of a high dimensional affine space satisfies Murphy's Law, as formulated by Vakil. In this short note, we instead consider the loci in the Hilbert scheme parametrizing punctual schemes with a given Hilbert function, and we show that these loci satisfy Murphy's Law. We also prove a related result for equivariant deformations of curve singularities with $\mathbb G_m$-action.
The present notes contain the material of the lectures given by the author at the summer school on ``Modular Forms and their Applications'' at the Sophus Lie Conference Center in the summer of 2004.
In this Part II, D(10.2), of D(10), we take D(10.1) (arXiv:1302.2054 [math.AG]) as the foundation to define the notion of $Z$-semistable morphisms from general Azumaya nodal curves, of genus $\ge 2$, with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold and show that the moduli stack of such $Z$-semistable morphisms of a fixed type is compact. This gives us a counter moduli stack to D-strings as the moduli stack of stable maps in Gromov-Witten theory to the fundamental string. It serves and prepares for us the basis toward a new invariant of Calabi-Yau 3-fold that captures soft-D-string …
In this short note, a new computation of the degree of the locus of 3-nodal plane curves in the linear system of degree d plane curves is given. The answer is expressed as a tautological class on a blow-up of the Hilbert scheme of 3 points in the plane. The class is evaluated by the Bott residue formula.
This work has been prompted by the surprising lack of mathematical coherence in the common usage of some of the fundamental entities in the theory of probability, with an inherent risk of contradiction. While disentangling the intricacies, we realized that the same issue has been raised many times, with only partial solutions, notably by Boole, Hilbert, De Finetti and Renyi, among others. In particular, a restoration of foundational coherence in the usage of probability theory appears to be a missing piece in the solution of Hilbert VI problem. Here we solve the problem by a new formalization …
In this note, generalizing earlier work of Nakajima and Vasserot, we study the (equivariant) cohomology rings of Hilbert schemes of certain toric surfaces and establish their connections to Fock space and Jack polynomials.
In this note we investigate the generating series of the Euler characteristics of Hilbert scheme of points on cyclic quotient singularities of type (p,1). We link the appearing combinatorics to p-fountains, a generalization of the notion of fountain of coins. We obtain a representation of the generating series as coefficient of a two variable generating series.
In this short note we use the notion of power structure over the Grothendieck ring of complex algebraic varieties to study generating series of classes of Hilbert schemes of points on complex orbifolds.
In a suitable regime of superstring theory, D-branes in a Calabi-Yau space and their most fundamental behaviors can be nicely described mathematically through morphisms from Azumaya spaces with a fundamental module to that Calabi-Yau space. In the earlier work [L-L-S-Y] (D(2): arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) from the project, we explored this notion for the case of D1-branes (i.e. D-strings) and laid down some basic ingredients toward understanding the notion of D-string world-sheet instantons in this context. In this continuation, D(10), of D(2), we move on to construc…
