Mehta and Seshadri have proved that the set of equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental group of a punctured compact Riemann surface, can be identified with equivalence classes of stable parabolic bundles of parabolic degree zero on the compact Riemann surface. In this note, we discuss the Mehta-Seshadri correspondence over an irreducible projective curve with at most nodes as singularities.
We generalize Bertram's work on rank two vector bundles to an irreducible projective nodal curve C. We use extensions of a line bundle L by O_C and the associated `forgetful' map to study a compactification of the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 2 and determinant L on C.
We give a survey of uniformization results for principal bundles on curves. We provide a proof of uniformization for nodal curves; this result is a special case of work of Belkale and Fakhruddin for uniformization on singular curves. We use the uniformization result to give a construction of a compactification of the moduli of G bundles on a family of nodal curves. Along the way we also explain how to use equivariant compactifactions of a group to compactify the moduli stack of bundles over a fixed nodal curve.
We establish a striking connection between Abramovich's and Vistoli's twisted bundles and Gieseker vector bundles. This note grew out of an attempt to understand a recent draft of Seshadri.
Studying degenerations of moduli spaces of semistable principal bundles on smooth curves leads to the problem of constructing and studying moduli spaces on singular curves. In this note, we will see that the moduli spaces of $δ$-semistable pseudo bundles on a nodal curve constructed by the first author become, for large values of $δ$, the moduli spaces for semistable singular principal bundles. The latter are reasonable candidates for degenerations and a potential basis of further developments as on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we find a notion of semistability for principal bundle…
Let $Y_{1},\dots,Y_{l}$ be smooth irreducible projective curves and let $Y$ be its disjoint union. Given a semisimple reductive algebraic group $G$ and a faithful representation $ρ:G\hookrightarrow \textrm{SL}(V)$ we construct a projective moduli space of $(\underlineκ,δ)$-(semi)stable singular principal $G$-bundles with generalized parabolic structure of type $\underline{e}$. In case $Y$ is the normalization of a connected and reducible projective nodal curve $X$, there is a closed subscheme coarsely representing the subfunctor corresponding to descending bundles. We prove that the descent op…
Let $U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ with determinant $L$ where $L$ is a fixed line bundle of degree $d$ over a nodal curve $Y$. We prove that the projective Poincare bundle on $Y \times U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ and the projective Picard bundle on $U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ are stable for suitable polarisation. For a nonsingular point $x \in Y$, we show that the restriction of the projective Poincare bundle to $x \times U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ is stable for any polarisation. We prove that for arithmetic genus $g\ge 3$ and for $g=n=2, d$ odd, the Picard group of the moduli space $U'_L…
We construct projectivization of a parabolic vector bundle and a tautological line bundle over it. It is shown that a parabolic vector bundle is ample if and only if the tautological line bundle is ample. This allows us to generalize the notion of a k-ample bundle, introduced by Sommese, to the context of parabolic bundles. A parabolic vector bundle $E_*$ is defined to be k-ample if the tautological line bundle ${\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb P}(E_*)}(1)$ is $k$--ample. We establish some properties of parabolic k-ample bundles.
In this paper, we study rank 2 (quasi) parabolic bundles over the Riemann sphere with an effective divisor and these moduli spaces. First we consider a criterium when a parabolic bundle admits a unramified irregular singular parabolic connection. Second, to give a good compactification of the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles, we introduce a generalization of parabolic bundles, which is called refined parabolic bundles. Third, we discuss a stability condition of refined parabolic bundles and define elementary transformations of the refined parabolic bundles. Finally, we describe the…
The moduli space of Gieseker vector bundles is a compactification of moduli of vector bundles on a nodal curve. This moduli space has only normal crossing singularity and it provides a flat degeneration. We prove a Torelli type theorem for a nodal curve using the moduli space of stable Gieseker vector bundles of fixed rank (strictly greater than $1$) and fixed degree such that rank and degree are co-prime.
We prove a Torelli theorem for the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles over a smooth complex projective algebraic curve under the assumption that the parabolic weight system is generic. When the genus is at least two, using this result we also prove a Torelli theorem for the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles of rank at least two with generic parabolic weights. The key input in the proofs is a method of J.C. Hurtubise, Integrable systems and algebraic surfaces, Duke Math. Jour. 83 (1996), 19--49.
Our aim in this article is to produce new examples of semistable Lazarsfeld- Mukai bundles on smooth projective surfaces $X$ using the notion of parabolic vector bundles. In particular, we associate natural parabolic structures to any rank two (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle and study the parabolic stability of these parabolic bundles. We also show that the orbifold bundles on Kawamata coverings of $X$ corresponding to the above parabolic bundles are themselves certain (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles. This gives semistable Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on Kawamata covers of the projective plane and …
Let $φ: Y \rightarrow X$ be a finite surjective morphism between smooth complex projective curves, where $X$ is irreducible but $Y$ need not be so. Let $V_*$ be a parabolic vector bundle on $Y$. We construct a parabolic structure on the direct image $φ_* V$ on $X$, where $V$ is the vector bundle underlying $V_*$. The parabolic vector bundle $φ_* V_*$ on $X$ obtained this way has a ramified torus sub-bundle; it is a torus bundle of $\text{Ad}(φ_* V)$ outside the parabolic divisor for $φ_* V_*$ that satisfies certain conditions at the parabolic points. Conversely, given a parabolic vector bundle…
Algebraic parabolic bundles on smooth projective curves over algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is defined. It is shown that the category of algebraic parabolic bundles is equivalent to the category of orbifold bundles defined in \cite{KP}. Tensor, dual, pullback and pushforward operations are also defined for parabolic bundles.
We give a cohomological criterion for a parabolic vector bundle on a curve to be semistable. It says that a parabolic vector bundle $E$ with rational parabolic weights is semistable if and only if there is another parabolic vector bundle $F$ with rational parabolic weights such that the cohomologies of the vector bundle underlying the para- bolic tensor product $E \otimes F$ vanish. This criterion generalizes the known semistability criterion of Faltings for vector bundles on curves and significantly improves the result in [Bis07].
In this paper, we obtain an explicit formula for the Chern character of a locally abelian parabolic bundle in terms of its constituent bundles. Several features and variants of parabolic structures are discussed. Parabolic bundles arising from logarithmic connections form an important class of examples. As an application, we consider the situation when the local monodromies are semi-simple and are of finite order at infinity. In this case the parabolic Chern classes of the associated locally abelian parabolic bundle are deduced to be zero in the rational Deligne cohomology in degrees $\geq 2$.
Given a parabolic vector bundle, we construct for it a projectivization and tautological line bundle. These are analogs of the projectivization and tautological line bundle for an usual vector bundle. Using these we give a construction of the parabolic Chern classes.
In ``Ramified G-bundles as parabolic bundles'' (J. Ramanujan Math. Soc. (2003) Vol. 18) with Balaji and Nagaraj we introduced the ramified principal bundles. The aim here is to define the Higgs bundles in the ramified context.
If $ D \in X$ is a curve with multiple points in a surface, a parabolic bundle defined on $(X;D)$ away from the singularities can be extended in several ways to a parabolic bundle on a resolution of singularities. We investigate the possible parabolic Chern classes for these extensions.
In this article, we study the deformation theory of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve. As a special case, the infinitesimal deformation of these objects gives the tangent space of the corresponding moduli spaces, which can be used to calculate the dimension of the corresponding moduli space. We show that the deformation of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve is equivalent to the deformation of generalized parabolic bundles and generalized parabolic Hitchin pairs over the normalization of the nodal curve respectively.
We calculate the parabolic Chern character of a bundle with locally abelian parabolic structure on a smooth strict normal crossings divisor, using the definition in terms of Deligne-Mumford stacks. We obtain explicit formulas for $ch_1$, $ch_2$ and $ch_3$, and verify that these correspond to the formulas given by Borne for $ch_1$ and Mochizuki for $ch_2$.
We prove that the moduli spaces of parabolic symplectic/orthogonal bundles on a smooth curve are globally F regular type. As a consequence, all higher cohomology of theta line bundle vanish. During the proof, we develop a method to estimate codimension, and consider the infinite grassmannians for parabolic $G$ bundles.
Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ and a moduli space $M_α(Λ)$ of parabolic stable bundles on it of fixed determinant of complete parabolic flags, we prove that the Poincaré parabolic bundle on $X\times M_α(Λ)$ is parabolic stable with respect to a natural polarization on $X\times M_α(Λ)$.
This is a review article on some applications of generalised parabolic structures to the study of torsion free sheaves and $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs on nodal curves. In particular, we survey on the relation between representations of the fundamental group of a nodal curve and the moduli spaces of generalised parabolic bundles and generalised parabolic $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs on its normalisation as well as on an analogue of the Hitchin map for generalised parabolic $L$-twisted Hitchin pairs.
Given a vector bundle $E$ on an irreducible projective variety $X$ we give a necessary and sufficient criterion for $E$ to be a direct image of a line bundle under an étale morphism. The criterion in question is the existence of a Cartan subalgebra bundle of the endomorphism bundle $\text{End}(E)$. As a corollary, a criterion is obtained for $E$ to be the direct image of the structure sheaf under an étale morphism. The direct image of a parabolic line bundle under any ramified covering map has a natural parabolic structure. Given a parabolic vector bundle, we give a similar criterion for it to…
We define the Gromov-Witten invariants for the parabolic bundles over an orbifold $C$ in various situation. Those bring us to refine this notion to get an accurate computation of the number of maximal subbundles of a sufficiently general parabolic bundle by means of the Intriligator-Varfa formula.
Like the Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface who played an important role in the study of representation of the fundamental group of the surface, the parabolic Higgs bundles play also their importance in the study of the fundamental group but of punctured surface. In this paper, we shall give an algorithm to calculate the (virtual) motive (i.e in a suitable Grothendieck ring) of the moduli spaces of parabolic Higgs bundles of fixed rank, fixed degree and fixed parabolic structure, using localization with respect to the circle action.
In \cite{Bi2} (Canad. Jour. Math. Vol. 58) we defined connections on a parabolic principal bundle. While connections on usual principal bundles are defined as splittings of the Atiyah exact sequence, it was noted in \cite{Bi2} that the Atiyah exact sequence does not generalize to the parabolic principal bundles. Here we show that a twisted version of the Atiyah exact sequence generalize to the context of parabolic principal bundles. For usual principal bundles, giving a splitting of this twisted Atiyah exact sequence is equivalent to giving a splitting of the Atiyah exact sequence. Connections…
Let $Y$ be an integral nodal projective curve of arithmetic genus $g\ge 2$ with $m$ nodes defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $x$ a nonsingular closed point of $Y$. Let $n$ and $d$ be coprime integers with $n\ge 2$. Fix a line bundle $L$ of degree $d$ on $Y$. Let $U_Y(n,d,L)$ denote the (compactified) "fixed determinant moduli space". We prove that the restriction $\mathcal{U}_{L,x}$ of the Poincare bundle to $x \times U_Y(n,d,L)$ is stable with respect to the polarisation $θ_L$ and its restriction to $x \times U'_Y(n,d,L)$, where $U'_Y(n,d,L)$ is the moduli space of vector bund…
In this article we extend the proof given by Biswas and Gomez of a Torelli theorem for the moduli space of Higgs bundles with fixed determinant, to the parabolic situation.
Let $M$ be the moduli space of generalized parabolic bundles (GPBs) of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a smooth curve $X$. Let $M_{\bar L}$ be the closure of its subset consisting of GPBs with fixed determinant ${\bar L}$. We define a moduli functor for which $M_{\bar L}$ is the coarse moduli scheme. Using the correspondence between GPBs on $X$ and torsion-free sheaves on a nodal curve $Y$ of which $X$ is a desingularization, we show that $M_{\bar L}$ can be regarded as the compactified moduli scheme of vector bundles on $Y$ with fixed determinant. We get a natural scheme structure on the closure o…
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 3$ and let $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{par}}$ be the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles over $X$. Let $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{parH}}$ denote the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles over $X$. In this article, we study the Picard group of $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{par}}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{parH}}$.
Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve defined over complex numbers, S= {p_1, p_2,...,p_n} \subset X$ a finite set of closed points and N > 1 a fixed integer. For any pair (r,d) in Z X Z/N, there exists a parabolic vector bundle R_{r,d,*} on X, with parabolic structure over S and all parabolic weights in Z/N, that has the following property: Take any parabolic vector bundle E_* of rank r on X whose parabolic points are contained in S, all the parabolic weights are in Z/N and the parabolic degree is d. Then E_* is parabolic semistable if and only if there is no nonzero parabolic homomo…
For every set of parabolic weights, we construct a Harder-Narasimhan stratification for the moduli stack of parabolic vector bundles on a curve. It is based on the notion of parabolic slope, introduced by Mehta and Seshadri. We also prove that the stratification is schematic, that each stratum is complete, and establish an analogue of Behrend's conjecture for parabolic vector bundles. A comparison with recent $Θ$-stratification approaches is discussed.
We desribe vector bundles over a class of noncommutative curves, namely, over noncommutative nodal curves of string type and of almost string type. We also prove that in other cases the classification of vector bundles over a noncommutative curve is a wild problem.
We investigate the birational geometry (in the sense of Mori's program) of the moduli space of rank 2 semistable parabolic vector bundles on a rational curve. We compute the effective cone of the moduli space and show that all birational models obtained by Mori's program are also moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles with certain parabolic weights.
Let X be a compact Riemann surface together with a finite set of marked points. We use Morse theoretic techniques to compute the Betti numbers of the parabolic U(2,1)-Higgs bundles moduli spaces over X. We give examples for one marked point showing that the Poincare polynomials depend on the system of weights of the parabolic bundle.
Let $M$ be a quasi-regular compact connected Sasakian manifold, and let $N = M/S^1$ be the base projective variety. We establish an equivalence between the class of Sasakian $G$-Higgs bundles over $M$ and the class of parabolic (or equivalently, ramified) $G$-Higgs bundles over the base $N$.
We find upper bounds on the essential dimension of the moduli stack of parabolic vector bundles over a curve. When there is no parabolic structure, we improve the known upper bound on the essential dimension of the usual moduli stack. Our calculations also give lower bounds on the essential dimension of the semistable locus inside the moduli stack of vector bundles of rank $r$ and degree $d$ without parabolic structure.
In this paper, we consider the weight $i$ de Rham--Gauss--Manin bundles on a smooth variety arising from a smooth projective morphism $f:X\_U\lrar U$ for $i\geq 0$. We associate to each weight $i$ de Rham bundle, a certain parabolic bundle on $S$ and consider their parabolic Chern characters in the rational Chow groups, for a good compactification $S$ of $U$. We show the triviality of the alternating sum of these parabolic bundles in the (positive degree) rational Chow groups. This removes the hypothesis of semistable reduction in the original result of this kind due to Esnault and Viehweg.
Let X be a smooth projective connected curve of genus $g \ge 2$ and let I be a finite set of points of X. Fix a parabolic structure on I for rank r vector bundles on X. Let $M^{par}$ denote the moduli space of parabolic semistable bundles and let $L^{par}$ denote the parabolic determinant bundle. In this paper we show that the n-th tensor power line bundle ${L^{par}}^n$ on the moduli space $M^{par}$ is globally generated, as soon as the integer n is such that $n \ge [\frac{r^2}{4}]$. In order to get this bound, we construct a parabolic analogue of the Quot scheme and extend the result of Popa …
This is a sequel to "Kodaira-Saito vanishing via Higgs bundles in positive characteristic" (arXiv:1611.09880). However, unlike the previous paper, all the arguments here are in characteristic zero. The main result is a Kodaira vanishing theorem for semistable parabolic Higgs bundles with trivial parabolic Chern classes. This implies a general semipositivity theorem. This also implies a Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for complex variations of Hodge structure.
