In this paper we consider the Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{p(t)}^n$ parameterizing subschemes of $P^n$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(t)$, and we investigate its locus containing points corresponding to schemes with regularity lower than or equal to a fixed integer $r'$. This locus is an open subscheme of $Hilb_{p(t)}^n$ and, for every $s\geq r'$, we describe it as a locally closed subscheme of the Grasmannian $Gr_{p(s)}^{N(s)}$ given by a set of equations of degree $\leq \mathrm{deg}(p(t))+2$ and linear inequalities in the coordinates of the Plücker embedding.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let $H_G(d,N)$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $H(d,N)$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes of degree $d$ in the projective N-space. We proved in a previous paper that $H_G(d,N)$ is irreducible for $d\le9$ and $N\ge1$. In the present paper we prove that also $H_G(10,N)$ is irreducible for each $N\ge1$, giving also a complete description of its singular locus.
Let X be a smooth, connected, dimension n, quasi-projective variety imbedded in \PP_N. Consider integers {k_1,...,k_r}, with k_i>0, and the Hilbert Scheme H_{k_1,...,k_r}(X) of aligned, finite, degree \sum k_i, subschemes of X, with multiplicities k_i at points x_i (possibly coinciding). The expected dimension of H_{k_1,...,k_r}(X) is 2N-2+r-(\sum k_i)(N-n). We study the locus of points where H_{k_1,...,k_r}(X) is not smooth of expected dimension and we prove that the lines carrying this locus do not fill up \PP_N
This paper is concerned with the geometry of the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $14$ points on $\mathbb{A}^6$. This scheme has two components: the smoothable one and an exceptional one. We prove that the latter is smooth and identify the intersection of components as a vector bundle over the Iliev-Ranestad divisor in the space of cubic fourfolds. The ninth secant variety of the triple Veronese reembedding lies inside the Iliev-Ranestad divisor. We point out that this secant variety is set-theoretically a codimension two complete intersection and discuss the degrees of its equations.
We study the stable hyperelliptic locus, i.e. the closure, in the Deligne- Mumford moduli space of stable curves, of the locus of smooth hyperelliptic curves. Working on a suitable blowup of the relative Hilbert scheme (of degree 2) associated to a family of stable curves, we construct a bundle map ('degree-2 Brill-Noether') from a modification of the Hodge bundle to a tautological bundle, whose degeneracy locus is the natural lift of the stable hyperelliptic locus plus a simple residual scheme. Using intersection theory on Hilbert schemes and Fulton-Macpherson residual intersection theory, th…
We prove that the generic point of a Hilbert modular four-fold is not a Jacobian. The proof uses degeneration techniques and is independent of properties of the mapping class group used in preceding papers on locally symmetric subvarieties of the moduli space of abelian varieties contained in the Schottky locus.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $\Hilb_{d}(\p{N})$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes. We prove that $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ is irreducible for $d\le9$, we characterize geometrically its singularities for $d\le 8$ and we give some results about them when $d=9$ which give some evidence to a conjecture on the nature of the singular points in $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$.
Let $S$ be the first degeneracy locus of a morphism of vector bundles corresponding to a general matrix of linear forms in $\mathbb{P}^s$. We prove that, under certain positivity conditions, its Hilbert square $\mathrm{Hilb}^2(S)$ is isomorphic to the zero locus of a global section of an irreducible homogeneous vector bundle on a product of Grassmannians. Our construction involves a naturally associated Fano variety, and an explicit description of the isomorphism.
The notion of a d-critical locus is an ingredient in the definition of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants by [BJM19]. There is a canonical d-critical locus structure on the Hilbert scheme of dimension zero subschemes on local toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This is obtained by truncating the $-1$-shifted symplectic structure on the derived moduli stack [BBBBJ15]. In this paper we show the canonical d-critical locus structure has critical charts consistent with the description of Hilbert scheme as a degeneracy locus [BBS13]. In particular, the canonical d-critical locus structure is isomorphic to th…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. The question of irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme Hilb_d P^n and its Gorenstein locus for various d was studied in [CEVV8, CN9, CN10, CN11]. In this short paper we prove that the subschemes corresponding to the Gorenstein algebras having Hilbert function (1,5,5,1) are smoothable i.e. lie in the closure of the locus of smooth subschemes. Among the Gorenstein algebras of length 12 the smoothability of algebras having such Hilbert function seems to be the most inapproachable using non-direct tools e.g. structural theorems.
This article has three goals. First, we generalize the result of Deuring and Serre on the characterization of supersingular locus of modular curves to all Shimura varieties given by totally indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. Second, we generalize the result of Ribet on arithmetic level raising to such Shimura varieties in the inert case. Third, as an application to number theory, we use the previous results to study the Selmer group of certain triple product motive of an elliptic curve, in the context of the Bloch--Kato conjecture.
Let n,d be positive integers, with d even (say d=2e). Let X_(n,d) denote the locus of degree d hypersurfaces in P^n which consist of two e-fold hyperplanes. We bound the regularity of the ideal of this variety. Moreover, we show that this variety is r-normal for r at least 2. The proof of the latter part is is a result of a tripartite collaboration of algebraic geometry, classical invariant theory and theoretical physics. It is executed by reducing the question to a combinatorial calculation involving Feynman diagrams and hypergeometric functions.
We investigate GIT quotients of polarized curves. More specifically, we study the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow schemes of curves of degree d and genus g in a projective space of dimension d-g, as the ratio v:=d/(2g-2) decreases. We prove that the first three values of v at which the GIT quotients change are given by v=4, 3.5, 2. We show that, for v>4, L. Caporaso's results hold true for both Hilbert and Chow semistability. If 3.5<v<4, the Hilbert semistable locus coincides with the Chow semistable locus and it maps to the moduli stack of weakly-pseudo-stable curves. If 2<v<3.5, the Hil…
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of null characteristic and $p(z)$ a Hilbert polynomial. We look for the minimal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m_{p(z)}$ of closed subschemes of projective spaces over $K$ with Hilbert polynomial $p(z)$. Experimental evidences led us to consider the idea that $m_{p(z)}$ could be achieved by schemes having a suitable minimal Hilbert function. We give a constructive proof of this fact. Moreover, we are able to compute the minimal Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $m_p(z)^{\varrho}$ of schemes with Hilbert polynomial $p(z)$ and given regularity $\varrho$ of …
We study the Hilbert scheme of Palatini threefolds X in P^5. We prove that such a scheme has an irreducible component containing X which is birational to the Grassmannian G(3,14) and we determine the exceptional locus of the birational map.
We study the closure of the locus of radical ideals in the multigraded Hilbert scheme associated with a standard graded polynomial ring and the Hilbert function of a homogeneous coordinate ring of points in general position in projective space. In the case of projective plane, we give a sufficient condition for an ideal to be in the closure of the locus of radical ideals. For projective space of arbitrary dimension we present a necessary condition. The paper is motivated by the border apolarity lemma which connects such multigraded Hilbert schemes with the theory of ranks of polynomials.
We analyse the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ i.e. the open subscheme parameterising zero-dimensional Gorenstein subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We give new sufficient criteria for smoothability and smoothness of points of the Gorenstein locus. In particular we prove that this locus is irreducible when $d\leq 13$ and find its components when $d = 14$. The proof is relatively self-contained and it does not rely on a computer algebra system. As a by--product, we give equations of the fourth secant variety to the $d$-th Veronese reembedding of $…
We study the birational geometry of Hilbert schemes of points on non-minimal surfaces. In particular, we study the weak Lefschetz Principle in the context of birational geometry. We focus on the interaction of the stable base locus decomposition (SBLD) of the cones of effective divisors of $X^{[n]}$ and $Y^{[n]}$, when there is a birational morphism $f:X\rightarrow Y$ between surfaces. In this setting, $N^1(Y^{[n]})$ embeds in $N^1(X^{[n]})$, and we ask if the restriction of the stable base locus decomposition of $N^1(X^{[n]})$ yields the respective decomposition in $N^1(Y^{[n]})$ $i.e.$, if t…
The Hilbert series of a polarised algebraic variety $(X,D)$ is a powerful invariant that, while it captures some features of the geometry of $(X,D)$ precisely, often cannot recover much information about its singular locus. This work explores the extent to which the Hilbert series of an orbifold del Pezzo surface fails to pin down its singular locus, which provides nonexistence results describing when there are no orbifold del Pezzo surfaces with a given Hilbert series, supplies bounds on the number of singularities on such surfaces, and has applications to the combinatorics of lattice polytop…
We study a natural Hodge module on the Hilbert scheme of four points on affine three-space, which categorifies the Donaldson--Thomas invariant of the Hilbert scheme. We determine the weight filtration on the Hodge module explicitly in terms of intersection cohomology complexes, and compute the E-polynomial of its cohomology. The computations make essential use of a description of the singularity of the Hilbert scheme as the degeneracy locus of the Pfaffian function.
We study the structure of the relative Hilbert scheme for a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its natural cycle map to the relative symmetric product. We show that the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We discuss some applications and connections, notably with birational geometry and intersection theory on Hilbert schemes of smooth surfaces. Revised version corrects some minor errors.
We show that a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ can be reconstructed from its polarized Jacobian $(X, Θ)$ as a certain locus in the Hilbert scheme $\mathrm{Hilb}^d(X)$, for $d=3$ and for $d=g+2$, defined by geometric conditions in terms of the polarization $Θ$. The result is an application of the Gunning--Welters trisecant criterion and the Castelnuovo--Schottky theorem by Pareschi--Popa and Grushevsky, and its scheme theoretic extension by the authors.
The Hilbert scheme of projective 3-folds of codimension 3 or more that are linear scrolls over the projective plane or over a smooth quadric surface or that are quadric or cubic fibrations over the projective line is studied. All known such threefolds of degree from 7 to 11 are shown to correspond to smooth points of an irreducible component of their Hilbert scheme, whose dimension is computed. A relationship with the locus of good determinantal subschemes is investigated
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
We establish a form of the Gotzmann representation of the Hilbert polynomial based on rank and generating degrees of a module, which allow for a generalization of Gotzmann's Regularity Theorem. Under an additional assumption on the generating degrees, the Gotzmann regularity bound becomes sharp. An analoguous modification of the Macaulay representation is used along the way, which generalizes the theorems of Macaulay and Green, and Gotzmann's Persistence Theorem.
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves, over a base of arbitrary dimension, via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We determine the relevant cotangent sheaves and complexes. We determine the structure of certain projective bundles called node scrolls, which play an important role in the geometry of Hilbert schemes.
We study the component H_n of the Hilbert scheme whose general point parameterizes a pair of codimension two linear subspaces in P^n for n > 2. We show that H_n is smooth and isomorphic to the blow-up of the symmetric square of G(n-2,n) along the diagonal. Further H_n intersects only one other component in the full Hilbert scheme, transversely. We determine the stable base locus decomposition of its effective cone and give modular interpretations of the corresponding models, hence conclude that H_n is a Mori dream space.
Bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Hilbert coefficients are given in terms of the arithmetic degree (if the ring is reduced) or in terms of the defining degrees. From this it follows that there exists only a finite number of Hilbert functions associated to reduced algebras over an algebraically closed field with a given arithmetic degree and dimension. A good bound is also given for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of initial ideals which depends neither on term orders nor on the coordinates, and holds for any field.
Let $ρ_C$ be the regularity of the Hilbert function of a projective curve $C$ in $\mathbb P^n_K$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ and $α_1,...,α_{n-1}$ be minimal degrees for which there exists a complete intersection of type $(α_1,...,α_{n-1})$ containing the curve $C$. Then the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $C$ is upper bounded by $\max\{ρ_C+1,α_1+...+α_{n-1}-(n-2)\}$. We study and, for space curves, refine the above bound providing several examples.
Thom polynomial describes the cohomology class Poincaré dual to the locus of particular singularity of a generic holomorphic map. In this paper we derive a closed formula for the generating function of its coefficients. The method is based on a new construction of the embedding space of punctual Hibert scheme that we call the non-associative Hilbert scheme. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated on explicit computation of a number of Thom polynomials, including those associated with singularities of Thom-Boardman types~$Σ^{i,j}$, $Σ^{2,1,1}$, $Σ^{2,2,1}$, and~$Σ^{2,2,2}$.
We work out the action of the blowup or 'discriminant' polarization on some natural cycles in the Hilbert scheme, including generalized diagonals and cycles, called 'node scrolls', parametrizing schemes supported on singular points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautologic…
In this paper, we show that every regular singular $\mathscr{D}$-module in $\mathbb{C}^n$ whose singular locus is a normal crossing is isomorphic to a quiver $\mathscr{D}$-module - a $\mathscr{D}$-module whose definition is based on certain representations of the hypercube quiver. To be more precise we give an equivalence of the respective categories. Our definition of quiver $\mathscr{D}$-modules is based on the one of Khoroshkin and Varchenko. To prove the equivalence, we use an equivalence by Galligo, Granger and Maisonobe for regular singular $\mathscr{D}$-modules whose singular locus is a…
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve embedded in its Jacobian $J$ via an Abel-Jacobi map. We compute the scheme structure of the Hilbert scheme component of $\textrm{Hilb}_J$ containing the Abel-Jacobi curve as a point. We relate the result to the ramification (and to the fibres) of the Torelli morphism $\mathcal M_g\rightarrow \mathcal A_g$ along the hyperelliptic locus. As an application, we determine the scheme structure of the moduli space of Picard sheaves (introduced by Mukai) on a hyperelliptic Jacobian.
The notion of regularity has been used by S. Kleiman in the construction of bounded families of ideals or sheaves with given Hilbert polynomial, a crucial point in the construction of Hilbert or Picard scheme. In a related direction, Kleiman proved that if I is an equidimensional reduced ideal in a polynomial ring S over an algebraically closed field, then the coefficients of the Hilbert polynomial of R = S/I can be bounded by the dimension and the multiplicity of R. Srinivas and Trivedi proved that the corresponding result does not hold for a local domain. However, they proved that there exis…
We study the relative Hilbert scheme of a family of nodal (or smooth) curves via its (birational) cycle map, going to the relative symmetric product. We show the cycle map is the blowing up of the discriminant locus, which consists of cycles with multiple points. We derive an intersection calculus for Chern classes of tautological bundles on the relative Hilbert scheme, which has applications to enumerative geometry.
Let A = S/J be a standard artinian graded algebra over the polynomial ring S. A theorem of Macaulay dictates the possible growth of the Hilbert function of A from any degree to the next, and if this growth is the maximal possible then strong consequences have been given by Gotzmann. It can be phrased in terms of the base locus of the linear system defined by the relevant component(s) of J. If J is the artinian reduction of the ideal of a finite set of points in projective space then this maximal growth for A was shown by Bigatti, Geramita and the second author to imply strong geometric consequ…
Our first result is that a homogeneous form $F$ in $n$ variables is GIT semistable with respect to the natural $SL(n)$-action if and only if the first non-trivial Hilbert point of the associated Milnor algebra is semistable. We also prove that the induced morphism on the GIT quotients is finite, and injective on the locus of stable forms. Our second result is that the associated form of $F$, also known as the Macaulay inverse system of the Milnor algebra of $F$, and which is apolar to the last non-trivial Hilbert point of the Milnor algebra, is GIT semistable whenever $F$ is a smooth form. The…
In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of n points on P^2. We discuss the stable base locus decomposition of the effective cone and the corresponding birational models. We give modular interpretations to the models in terms of moduli spaces of Bridgeland semi-stable objects. We construct these moduli spaces as moduli spaces of quiver representations using G.I.T. and thus show that they are projective. There is a precise correspondence between wall-crossings in the Bridgeland stability manifold and wall-crossings between Mori cones. For n at most 9, we explicitly …
In this paper, we describe the worst unstable points of a Hilbert scheme for some special Hilbert polynomials and ambient spaces using Murai's work on Gotzmann monomial sets. We investigate the geometry of the projective schemes represented by worst unstable Hilbert points and see that in certain cases that they fail to be $K$-stable or attain maximal regularity.

The space of smooth rational cubic curves in projective space $\PP^r$ ($r\ge 3$) is a smooth quasi-projective variety, which gives us an open subset of the corresponding Hilbert scheme, the moduli space of stable maps, or the moduli space of stable sheaves. By taking its closure, we obtain three compactifications $\bH$, $\bM$, and $\bS$ respectively. In this paper, we compare these compactifications. First, we prove that $\bH$ is the blow-up of $\bS$ along a smooth subvariety which is the locus of stable sheaves which are planar (i.e. support is contained in a plane). Next we prove that $\bS$ …
Quadratic entry locus manifold of type $δ$ $X\subset\mathbb P^N$ of dimension $n\geq 1$ are smooth projective varieties such that the locus described on $X$ by the points spanning secant lines passing through a general point of the secant variety $SX\subseteq\mathbb P^N$ is a smooth quadric hypersurface of dimension $δ=2n+1-\dim(SX)$ equal to the secant defect of $X$. These manifolds appear widely and naturally among projective varieties having special geometric properties and/or extremal tangential behaviour. We prove that, letting $δ=2r_X +1\geq 3$ or $δ=2r_X+2$, then $2^{r_X}$ divides $n-δ$…
Let $X$ be a compact complex manifold of complex dimension $n$ and $α$ be a smooth closed real form on $X$ such that its cohomology class $\{ α\}\in H^{1,1}(X, \mathbb{R})$ is big. In this paper we prove that, given a bounded function $f$ with bounded distributional laplacian in $X,$ the $α$-psh envelope $P(f)$ is also locally bounded with locally bounded distributional laplacian on the ample locus of $\{α\}.$
We show that tautological integrals on Hilbert schemes of points can be written in terms of universal polynomials in Chern numbers. The results hold in all dimensions, though they strengthen known results even for surfaces by allowing integrals over arbitrary "geometric" subsets (and their Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes). We apply this to enumerative questions, proving a generalised Göttsche Conjecture for all singularity types and in all dimensions. So if L is a sufficiently ample line bundle on a smooth variety X, in a general subsystem P^d of |L| of appropriate dimension the number of hy…
In this paper, we consider $\mathbb{Z}^{r}-$graded modules on the $\mathrm{Cl}(X)$ $-$graded Cox ring $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},\dotsc,x_{r}]$ of a smooth complete toric variety $X$. Using the theory of Klyachko filtrations in the reflexive case, we construct a collection of lattice polytopes codifying the multigraded Hilbert function of the module. We apply this approach to reflexive $\mathbb{Z}^{s+r+2}$-graded modules over non-standard bigraded polynomial rings $\mathbb{C}[x_{0},\dotsc,x_{s},y_{0},\dotsc,y_{r}]$. In this case, we give sharp bounds for the multigraded regularity index of their multig…
We show that the conditions imposed on a second order linear differential equation with rational coefficients on the complex line by requiring it to have regular singularities with fixed exponents at the points of a finite set $P$ and apparent singularities at a finite set $Q$ (disjoint from $P$) determine a linear system of maximal rank. In addition, we show that certain auxiliary parameters can also be fixed. This enables us to conclude that the family of such differential equations is of the expected dimension and to define a birational map between an open subset of the moduli space of loga…
We give an effective uniform bound on the multigraded regularity of a subscheme of a smooth projective toric variety X with a given multigraded Hilbert polynomial. To establish this bound, we introduce a new combinatorial tool, called a Stanley filtration, for studying monomial ideals in the homogeneous coordinate ring of X. As a special case, we obtain a new proof of Gotzmann's regularity theorem. We also discuss applications of this bound to the construction of multigraded Hilbert schemes.
A Pfaff field on a projective space is a map from the sheaf of differential s-forms, for a certain s, to an invertible sheaf. The interesting ones are those arising from a Pfaff system, as they give rise to a distribution away from their singular locus. A subscheme of the projective space is said to be invariant under the Pfaff field, if the latter induces a Pfaff field on the subscheme. We give bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of invariant complete intersection subschemes (more generally, arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subschemes) of dimension s, depending on how singular these sc…
For a reduced hypersurface $V(f) \subseteq \mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Milnor algebra $M(f)$ is well understood when $V(f)$ is smooth, as well as when $V(f)$ has isolated singularities. We study the regularity of $M(f)$ when $V(f)$ has a positive dimensional singular locus. In certain situations, we prove that the regularity is bounded by $(d-2)(n+1)$, which is the degree of the Hessian polynomial of $f$. However, this is not always the case, and we prove that in $\mathbb{P}^n$ the regularity of the Milnor algebra can grow quadratically in $d$.
