We present a proof of embedded desingularization for closed subschemes which does not make use of Hilbert-Samuel function and avoids Hironaka's notion of normal flatness.
This proof, already sketched in [A course on constructive desingularization and equivariance. In {\em Resolution of singularities (Obergurgl, 1997)}, vol. 181 {\em Progr. Math.}, Birkhäuser, 2000.] page 224, is done by showing that desingularization of a closed subscheme $X$, in a smooth sheme W, is achieved by taking an algorithmic principalization for the ideal $I(X)$, associated to the embedded scheme $X$.
This paper contains a short and simplified proof of desingularization over fields of characteristic zero, together with various applications to other problems in algebraic geometry (among others, the study of the behavior of desingularization of families of embedded schemes, and a formulation of desingularization which is stronger than Hironaka's). Our proof avoids the use of the Hilbert-Samuel function and Hironaka's notion of normal flatness: First we define a procedure for principalization of ideals (i.e. a procedure to make an ideal invertible), and then we show that desingularization of a…
These are introductional notes to resolution of singularities and Log principalization of ideals over fields of characteristic zero. We refer to `A simplified proof of desingularization and applications', A. Bravo, S. Encinas and O. Villamayor, (to appear in {\em Revista Matemática Iberoamericana}), for more details. The notes follow the algorithmic proof in `A new proof of desingularization over fields of characteristic zero', S. Encinas and O. Villamayor U., {\em Revista Matemática Iberoamericana}, 19 (2) (2003), which provides an important conceptual simplification over the original proofs …
Grothendieck proved in EGA IV that if any integral scheme of finite type over a locally noetherian scheme X admits a desingularization, then X is quasi-excellent, and conjectured that the converse is probably true. We prove this conjecture for noetherian schemes of characteristic zero. Namely, starting with the resolution of singularities for algebraic varieties of characteristic zero, we prove the resolution of singularities for noetherian quasi-excellent Q-schemes.
We present a survey on the recent progress with desingularization of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero. Due to expository goals of the paper we concentrate on giving examples and outlining main ideas, and we refer to other sources for detailed proofs and technical details. This survey will be published in the proceedings of the conference "Motivic integration and its interactions with model theory and non-archimedean geometry" (ICMS, May 2008).
We prove that any noetherian quasi-excellent scheme of characteristic zero admits a strong desingularization which is functorial with respect to all regular morphisms. We show that as an easy formal consequence of this result one obtains strong functorial desingularization for many other spaces of characteristic zero including quasi-excellent stacks and formal schemes, and complex and non-archimedean analytic spaces. Moreover, these functors easily generalize to non-compact setting by use of converging blow up hyper-sequences with regular centers.
Our main result establishes functorial desingularization of noetherian quasi-excellent schemes over $\bfQ$ with ordered boundaries. A functorial embedded desingularization of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero is deduced. Furthermore, a standard simple argument extends these results to other categories, including in particular, (equivariant) embedded desingularization of the following objects of characteristic zero: qe algebraic stacks, qe schemes, qe formal schemes, complex and non-archimedean analytic spaces. We also obtain a semistable reduction theorem for formal schemes.
We prove that the algorithm for desingularization of algebraic varieties in characteristic zero of the first two authors is functorial with respect to regular morphisms. For this purpose, we show that, in characteristic zero, a regular morphism with connected affine source can be factored into a smooth morphism, a ground-field extension and a generic-fibre embedding. Every variety of characteristic zero admits a regular morphism to a Q-variety. The desingularization algorithm is therefore Q-universal or absolute in the sense that it is induced from its restriction to varieties over Q. As a con…
Let C be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a fixed line bundle L on C, let M_C(r,L) be the coarse moduli space of semistable vector bundles E over C of rank r and determinant L. We show that the Brauer group of any desingularization of M_C(r, L)$ is trivial.
Let $X$ be a nonsingular projective surface over an algebraically closed field with characteristic zero, and $H_-$ and $H_+$ ample line bundles on $X$ separated by only one wall of type $(c_1,c_2)$. Suppose the moduli scheme $M(H_-)$ of rank-two $H_-$-stable sheaves with Chern classes $(c_1,c_2)$ is non-singular. We shall construct a desingularization of $M(H_+)$ by using $M(H_-)$. As an application, we consider whether singularities of $M(H_+)$ are terminal or not when $X$ is ruled or elliptic.
We present an algorithmic embedded desingularization of arithmetic surfaces bearing in mind implementability. Our algorithm is based on work by Cossart-Jannsen-Saito, though our variant uses a refinement of the order instead of the Hilbert-Samuel function as a measure for the complexity of the singularity. We particularly focus on aspects arising when working in mixed characteristics. Furthermore, we exploit the algorithm's natural parallel structure rephrasing it in terms of Petri nets for use in the parallelization environment GPI-Space with {\sc Singular} as computational back-end.
This paper is devoted to give all the technical constructions and definitions that will lead to the construction of an algorithm of resolution of singularities for binomial ideals. We construct a resolution function that will provide a resolution of singularities for binomial ideals, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. For us, a binomial ideal means an ideal generated by binomial equations without any restriction, including monomials and $p$-th powers, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field. This resolution function is based in a modified order function, called $E$-order. The …
This article contains an elementary constructive proof of resolution of singularities in characteristic zero. Our proof applies in particular to schemes of finite type and to analytic spaces (so we recover the great theorems of Hironaka). We introduce a discrete local invariant $\inv_X (a)$ whose maximum locus determines a smooth centre of blowing up, leading to desingularization. To define $\inv_X$, we need only to work with a category of local-ringed spaces $X=(|X|,{\cal O}_X)$ satisfying certain natural conditions. If $a\in |X|$, then $\inv_X(a)$ depends only on $\widehat{\cal O}_{X,a}$. Mo…
In our paper "Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I" we constructed and studied non-commutative resolutions of determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors. At the end of the introduction we asserted that the results could be generalized to determinantal varieties defined by non-maximal minors, at least in characteristic zero. In this paper we prove the existence of non-commutative resolutions in the general case in a manner which is still characteristic free, and carry out the explicit description by generators and relations in characteristic zero. As an applica…
Archinard studied the curve $C$ over $\mathbb{C}$ associated to an Appell-Lauricella hypergeometric series and differential forms on its desingularization. In this paper, firstly as a generalization of Archinard's results, we describe a partial desingularization of $C$ over a field $K$ under a mild condition on its characteristic and the space of global sections of its dualizing sheaf, especially we give an explicit basis of it. Secondly, when the characteristic is positive, we show that the Cartier operator on the space can be defined and describe it in terms of Appell-Lauricella hypergeometr…
This is a self-contained purely algebraic treatment of desingularization of fields of fractions $\mathbf{L}:=Q(\mathbf{A})$ of $d$-dimensional domains of the form \[\mathbf{A}:=\bar{\mathbf{F}}[\underline{x}]/\langle b(\underline{x})\rangle\] with a purely algebraic objective of uniquely describing $d$-dimensional valuations in terms of $d$ explicit (independent) local parameters and $1$ (dependent) local unit, for arbitrary dimension $d$ and arbitrary characteristic $p$. The desingularization will be given as a rooted tree with nodes labelled by domains $\mathbf{A}_k$ (all with field of fract…
In this paper, we give a short proof of a theorem by Kollár on hereditarily rational functions. This is an answer to his appeal to find an elementary proof which does not rely so much on resolution of singularities. Our approach does not make use of desingularization techniques. Instead, we apply a stronger version of the Łojasiewicz inequality. Moreover, this allows us to sharpen Kollár's theorem.
Building upon work of Villamayor and Bierstone-Milman we give a proof of the canonical Hironaka principalization and desingularization. The idea of "homogenized ideals" introduced in the paper gives {\it a priori} the canonicity of algorithm and radically simplifies the proof.
In this note, we give a proof for a variant of the functorial Deligne-Riemann-Roch theorem in positive characteristic based on ideas appearing in Pink and Rössler's proof of the Adams-Riemann-Roch theorem in positive characteristic (see \cite{Pi}). The method of their proof appearing in \cite{Pi}, which is valid for any positive characteristic and which is completely different from the classical proof, will allow us to prove the functorial Deligne-Riemann-Roch theorem in a much easier and more direct way. Our proof is also partially compatible with Mumford's isomorphism.
We describe how the use of a different degeneration from that considered by Eisenbud and Harris leads to a simple and characteristic-independent proof of the Brill-Noether theorem using limit linear series. As suggested by the degeneration, we prove an extended version of the theorem allowing for imposed ramification at up to two points. Although experts in the field have long been aware of the main ideas, we address some technical issues which arise in proving the full version of theorem.
A new proof for the embedded resolution of surface singularities in a three-dimensional smooth ambient space over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. The proof makes use of an upper semicontinuous resolution invariant which prescribes the center in each step of the resolution algorithm. The resolution invariant strictly decreases under each blowup. The definition of the resolution invariant is inspired by the proofs of resolution of singularities in arbitrary dimension over fields of characteristic zero. It was developed in an attempt to generalize these proofs to the sett…
In the famous paper of Deligne and Mumford, they proved that a proper hyperbolic curve over a discrete valuation field has stable reduction if and only if the Jacobian variety of the curve has stable reduction in the case where the residue field of its valuation ring is algebraically closed. In the proof, the theory of minimal regular models played an important role. In this paper, we establish a theory of minimal log regular models of curves. As a key tool for this theory, we give a criterion for $2$-dimensional local schemes to be log regular in terms of their minimal desingularization. More…
We present a concise proof for the existence and construction of a {\it strong resolution of excellent schemes} of finite type over a field of characteristic zero. Our proof is based on earlier work of Villamayor, Encinas-Villamayor and Bierstone-Milman. It apports some substantial simplifications which may be helpful for a better understanding of how to prove Hironaka's famous theorem.
We fill up a gap in Henn's proof concerning large automorphism groups of function fields of degree 1 over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic.
We give a characteristic-free proof that general codimension-1 Schubert varieties meet transversally in a Grassmannian and in some related varieties. Thus the corresponding intersection numbers computed in the Chow (and quantum Chow) rings of these varieties are enumerative in all characteristics. We show that known transversality results do not apply to these enumerative problems, emphasizing the need for additional theoretical work on transversality. The method of proof also strengthens some results in real enumerative geometry.
The goal of this paper is to give a new proof of a special case of the Kodaira-Saito vanishing theorem for a variation of Hodge structure on the complement of a divisor with normal crossings. The proof does not use the theory of mixed Hodge modules, but instead reduces it to a more general vanishing theorem for semistable nilpotent Higgs bundles, which is then proved by using some facts about Higgs bundles in positive characteristic.
Let $X$ (resp. $Y$) be a curve of genus 1 (resp. 2) over a base field $k$ whose characteristic does not equal 2. We give criteria for the existence of a curve $Z$ over $k$ whose Jacobian is up to twist (2,2,2)-isogenous to the products of the Jacobians of $X$ and $Y$. Moreover, we give algorithms to construct the curve $Z$ once equations for $X$ and $Y$ are given. The first of these involves the use of hyperplane sections of the Kummer variety of $Y$ whose desingularization is isomorphic to $X$, whereas the second is based on interpolation methods involving numerical results over $\mathbb{C}$ …
The object of the present is a proof of the existence of functorial resolution of tame quotient singularities for quasi-projective varieties over algebraically closed fields.
We give a short and elementary proof of Jung's theorem, which states that for a field K of characteristic zero the automorphisms of K[x,y] are generated by elementary automorphisms and linear automorphisms.
Poncelet's theorem states that if there exists an n-sided polygon which is inscribed in a given conic C and circumscribed about another conic D, then there are infinitely many such n-gons. Proofs of this theorem that we are aware of, including Poncelet's original proof and the celebrated modern proof by Griffiths and Harris, assume the two conics to be in general position (that is, not tangent or at least not osculating), or be defined over the field of complex numbers, or both. Here we show that Poncelet's theorem holds for any two conics C and D in the projective plane over an algebraically …
We give a new proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic, in the situation where the variety under scrutiny is a smooth subvariety of an abelian variety. Our proof is based on the theory of semistable sheaves in positive characteristic, in particular on Langer's theorem that the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of sheaves becomes strongly semistable after a finite number of iterations of Frobenius pull-backs. The interest of this proof is that it provides simple effective bounds (depending on the degree of the canonical line bundle) for the degree of the isotrivial finite cove…
We provide a detailed proof of the validity of the Minimal Model Program for threefolds over excellent Dedekind separated schemes whose residue fields do not have characteristic 2 or 3.
We study twists of the Burkhardt quartic threefold over non-algebraically closed base fields of characteristic different from 2,3,5. We show they all admit quartic models in projective four-space. We identify a Galois-cohomological obstruction that measures if a given twist is birational to a moduli space of abelian varieties. This obstruction has implications for the rational points on these varieties. As a result, we see that all possible 3-level structures can be realized by abelian surfaces, whereas Kummer 3-level structures that group-theoretically may be admissible, may not be realizable…
In this paper a concise, complete proof of resolution of singularities of 3-folds in positive characteristic (>5) is given. The first proof of this theorem was given by Abhyankar in 1966. The resolution morphism in our proof is an isomorphism over the nonsingular locus.
We give short, closure-theoretic proofs for uniform bounds on the growth of symbolic powers of ideals in regular rings. The author recently proved these bounds in mixed characteristic using various versions of perfectoid/big Cohen-Macaulay test ideals, with special cases obtained earlier by Ma and Schwede. In mixed characteristic, we instead use Heitmann's full extended plus (epf) closure, Jiang's weak epf (wepf) closure, and R.G.'s results on closure operations that induce big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. Our strategy also applies to any Dietz closure satisfying R.G.'s algebra axiom and a Brianço…
We prove a version of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for semiabelian varieties over fields of positive characteristic. The proof presented here contains the details of the proof sketched by the author in the article "Diophantine geometry from model theory," BSL 7 (2001) no. 1, 37 - 57; using the model theory of difference fields along the lines of Hrushovski. Algebraic proofs have been presented by Pink & Roessler and Pillay.
We give a new proof of some characteristic-free fundamental theorems in invariant theory first proved in C. De Concini and C. Procesi, A characteristic free approach to invariant theory, Adv. Math. 21 (1976), 330--354. We treat the action of the general linear group and the symplectic group. Our approach is geometric, and utilizes the fact that the categorical quotients are principal fiber bundles off codimension two or more.
We give a new proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic for finitely generated subgroups. We also make some progress towards the full Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic.
We give a proof of the degree formula for the Euler characteristic previously obtained by Kirill Zainoulline. The arguments used here are considerably simpler, and allow us to remove all restrictions on the characteristic of the base field.
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
Suppose that $X$ is a projective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. Further suppose that $L$ is an ample (or more generally in some sense positive) divisor. We study a natural linear system in $|K_X + L|$. We further generalize this to incorporate a boundary divisor $Δ$. We show that these subsystems behave like the global sections associated to multiplier ideals, $H^0(X, \mJ(X, Δ) \tensor L)$ in characteristic zero. In particular, we show that these systems are in many cases base-point-free. While the original proof utilized Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing and va…
The paper has been withdrawn by the author, due a gap in the proof of Theorem 6.1. The gap was discovered by M. Van den Bergh. Theorem 6.1 is used to prove the main result of the paper, namely Theorem 0.7 (decomposition in arbitrary characteristic). At this time we do not have an alternate proof. Other results of the paper (Theorems 0.2, 0.3, 0.6 and 3.1) are not effected by this problem, and they remain valid.
