A new proof for the embedded resolution of surface singularities in a three-dimensional smooth ambient space over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. The proof makes use of an upper semicontinuous resolution invariant which prescribes the center in each step of the resolution algorithm. The resolution invariant strictly decreases under each blowup. The definition of the resolution invariant is inspired by the proofs of resolution of singularities in arbitrary dimension over fields of characteristic zero. It was developed in an attempt to generalize these proofs to the setting of arbitrary characteristic. The usual resolution invariant which is used in characteristic zero behaves very badly over fields of positive characteristic. It is not upper semicontinuous. Further, the invariant may increase under blowup which destroys the induction argument. It is shown how these problems can be overcome in the case of surface singularities which are embedded in a three-dimensional smooth ambient space. Analogous to the proofs of resolution of singularities in characteristic zero, coefficient ideals are used to enable induction on the dimension of the ambient space. Since hypersurfaces of maximal contact need not exist over fields of positive characteristic, coefficient ideals are considered instead with respect to all regular hypersurfaces. The associated invariants are then maximized over all local flags of smooth subspaces. To construct flags which realize this maximum, techniques are introduced to maximize invariants of coefficient ideals over all coordinate changes. These so-called "cleaning techniques" form a core part of the proof. They can be seen as a characteristic-free generalization of the Tschirnhausen transformation, a classical technique to construct hypersurfaces of maximal contact.
Using the structure of the jet schemes of rational double point singularities, we construct "minimal embedded toric resolutions" of these singularities. We also establish, for these singularities, a correspondence between a natural class of irreducible components of the jet schemes centered at the singular locus and the set of divisors which appear on every "minimal embedded toric resolution". We prove that this correspondence is bijective except for the $E_8$ singulartiy. This can be thought as an embedded Nash correspondence for rational double point singularities.
We consider the question whether one can construct an embedded resolution of singularities of a singular variety $X\subset \textbf{A}^n$ from the data of the irreducible components of the spaces of jets (of $X$) centered at the singular locus of $X.$ We show that the answer is no in general and that it is yes for some birational models of rational triple surface singularities.
We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. In the first procedure the singularity is embedded as hypersurface. In the second procedure, which is inspired by a work of Goldin and Teissier for plane curves (see…
Any germ of a complex analytic space is equipped with two natural metrics: the {\it outer metric} induced by the hermitian metric of the ambient space and the {\it inner metric}, which is the associated riemannian metric on the germ. We show that minimal surface singularities are Lipschitz normally embedded (LNE), i.e., the identity map is a bilipschitz homeomorphism between outer and inner metrics, and that they are the only rational surface singularities with this property.
Any germ of a complex analytic space is equipped with two natural metrics: the outer metric induced by the hermitian metric of the ambient space and the inner metric, which is the associated riemannian metric on the germ. These two metrics are in general nonequivalent up to bilipschitz homeomorphism. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a normal surface singularity to be Lipschitz normally embedded (LNE), i.e., to have bilipschitz equivalent outer and inner metrics. In a partner paper [15] we apply it to prove that rational surface singularities are LNE if and only if they are mini…
In this paper we give some criteria for a family of generically reduced plane curve singularities to be equinormalizable. The first criterion is based on the $δ$-invariant of a (non-reduced) curve singularity which is introduced by Brücker-Greuel (\cite{BG}). The second criterion is based on the I-equisingularity of a $k$-parametric family ($k\geq 1$) of generically reduced plane curve singularities, which is introduced by Nobile (\cite{No}) for one-parametric families. The equivalence of some kinds of equisingularities of a family of generically reduced plane curve singularities is also studi…
The main purpose of this paper is to prove the existence of the moduli space parameterizing the embedded curve singularities of $(k^N,0)$ with an admissible Hilbert polynomial and to study its basic properties.
In a previous work we have introduced and studied the notion of embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution, which essentially consists in allowing the final ambient space to contain abelian quotient singularities. Here we explicitly compute an embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution of a Yomdin-Lê surface singularity $(V,0)$ in terms of a (global) embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution of their tangent cone by means of just weighted blow-ups at points. The generalized A'Campo's formula in this setting is applied so as to compute the characteristic polynomial. As a consequence, an exceptional divisor in the resolutio…
We give an explicit positive answer, in the case of reduced curve singularities, to a question of B. Teissier about the existence of a toric embedded resolution after reembedding. In the case of a curve singularity $(C,O)$ contained in a non singular surface $S$ such a reembedding may be defined in terms of a sequence of maximal contact curves of the minimal embedded resolution of $C$. We prove that there exists a toric modification, after reembedding, which provides an embedded resolution of $C$. We use properties of the semivaluation space of $S$ at $O$ to describe how the dual graph of the …
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and $V$ a hypersurface defined by an irreducible polynomial $f$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{K}$ . In this article we prove that an Embedded Deformation of $V$ which admits a Simultaneous Embedded Resolution induces, under certain mild conditions, a deformation of the reduced scheme associated to the space of $m$-jets $V_m$, $m\geq 0$. An example of an Embedded Deformation of $V$ which admits a Simultaneous Embedded Resolution is a $Γ(f)$-deformation of $V$, where $V$ has at most one isolated singularity, and $f$ is non…
We study the classification of plane curve singularities in arbitrary characteristic. We first give a bound for the determinacy of a plane curve singularity with respect to pararametrization equivalence in terms of its conductor. Then we classify parametrization simple plane curve singularities which are irreducible by giving a concrete list of normal forms of equations and parametrizations. In characteristic zero, the classification of parametrization simple irreducible plane curve singularities was achieved by Bruce and Gaffney.
This paper summarizes the results at the present moment about singularities with respect to the Mather-Jacobian log discrepancies over algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. The basic point is the Inversion of Adjunction with respect to Mather-Jacobian discrepancies holds in arbitrary characteristic. Based on this fact we will reduce many geometric properties of the singularities into the problem on jet schemes and try to avoid discussions which are distinctive for characteristic 0.
Over $\C$, Henry Laufer classified all taut surface singularities. We adapt and extent his transcendental methods to positive characteristic. With this we show that if a normal surface singularity is taut over $\C$, then the normal surface singularities with isomorphic dual graph over algebraically closed fields of characteristic exponent $p>1$ are taut for all but finitely many $p$. We conjecture that this is actually "if and only if".
The germ of an algebraic variety is naturally equipped with two different metrics up to bilipschitz equivalence. The inner metric and the outer metric. One calls a germ of a variety Lipschitz normally embedded if the two metrics are bilipschitz equivalent. In this article we prove that the model determinantal singularity, that is the space of $m\times n$ matrices of rank less than a given number, is Lipschitz normally embedded. We will also discuss some of the difficulties extending this result to the case of general determinantal singularities.
From the degree zero part of logarithmic vector fields along an algebraic hypersurface singularity we indentify the maximal multihomogeneity of a defining equation in form of a maximal algebraic torus in the embedded automorphism group. We show that all such maximal tori are conjugate and in one-to-one correspondence to maxmimal tori in the degree zero jet of the embedded automorphism group. The result is motivated by Kyoji Saito's characterization of quasihomogeneity for isolated hypersurface singularities and extends its formal version and a result of Hauser and Mueller.
The article investigates the behaviour of the characteristic zero resolution invariant when transcribed suitably to the case of surfaces in positive characteristic. By Moh's jumping phenomenon -- or the occurrence of kangaroo singularities -- one knows that the invariant may increase, thus destroying any induction. We describe in the paper how one can modify in the purely inseparable surface case the invariant by adding a subtle correction term so as to prohibit its occasional increases and to establish the induction argument again.
We give an overview of invariants of algebraic singularities over perfect fields. We then show how they lead to a synthetic proof of embedded resolution of singularities of 2-dimensional schemes.
In this article we define a Poincare series on a subspace of a complex analytic germ, induced by a multi-index filtration on the ambient space. We compute this Poincare series for subspaces defined by principal ideals. For plane curve singularities and nondegenerate singularities this Poincare series yields topological and geometric information. We compare this Poincare series with the one introduced in [E,G-Z]. In few cases they are equal and we show that the Poincare series we consider in this paper in general yields more information.
We prove the existence of resolution of singularities for arbitrary (not necessarily reduced or irreducible) excellent two-dimensional schemes, via permissible blow-ups. The resolution is canonical, and functorial with respect to automorphisms or etale or Zariski localizations. We treat the embedded case as well as the non-embedded case, with or without a boundary, and we relate the diferent versions. In the non-embedded case, a boundary is a collection of locally principal closed subschemes. Our main tools are the stratifications by Hilbert-Samuel functions and the characteristic polyhedra in…
The concept of the maximal contact is the key in Hironaka's resolution theory. It treats local theory, and it is not effective in positive characteristics. This is the essential reason why Hironaka's theory treats only the case of characteristic zero. In this article we propose the substitute for the maximal contact, which is effective in any characteristics of the ground field. We replace the maximal contact by a theorem in the theory of torus embeddings. Using essential ideas here, we would like to establish the theory of resolution of singularities in arbitrary characteristics in a global s…
In this survey paper we give an overview on some aspects of singularities of algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We review in particular results on equisingularity of plane curve singularities, classification of hypersurface singularities and determinacy of arbitrary singularities. The section on equisingularity has its roots in two important early papers by Antonio Campillo. One emphasis is on the differences between positive and zero characteristic and on open problems.
We study the singularities of the secant variety $Σ(X,L)$ associated to a smooth variety $X$ embedded by a sufficiently positive adjoint bundle $L$. We show that $Σ(X,L)$ is always Du Bois singular. Examples of secant varieties with worse singularities when $L$ has weak positivity are provided. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for $Σ(X, L)$ to have rational singularities.
A sequence of monoidal transformations is defined, in terms of invariants, for a singular hypersurface embedded in a smooth scheme of positive characteristic. Some examples are added to illustrate the improvement of singularities by this procedure.
We show that the derived category of any singularity over a field of characteristic 0 can be embedded fully and faithfully into a smooth triangulated category which has a semiorthogonal decomposition with components equivalent to derived categories of smooth varieties. This provides a categorical resolution of the singularity.
For a certain class of varieties X, we derive a formula for the valuation d_{X} on the arc space L(Y) of a smooth ambient space Y, in terms of an embedded resolution of singularities. A simple transformation rule yields a formula for the geometric Poincare series. Furthermore, we prove that for this class of varieties, the arithmetic and the geometric Poincare series coincide. We also study the geometric valuation for plane curves.
This paper extends previous results of the authors, concerning the behaviour of the equimultiple locus of algebroid surfaces under blowing--up, to arbitrary characteristic.
In a previous work we have introduced the notion of embedded $\Q$-resolution, which essentially consists in allowing the final ambient space to contain abelian quotient singularities. Here we give a generalization of N. A'Campo's formula for the monodromy zeta function of a singularity in this setting. Some examples of its applications are shown.
A theory of simultaneous resolution of singularities for families of embedded varieties (over a field of characteristic zero) parametrized by the spectrum of a suitable artinian ring, and compatible with a given algorithm of resolution, is presented. As usually, this a simple consequence of a similar theory for analogous families of basic objects, to which the main portion of this article is devoted.
It is a very old and interesting open problem to characterize those collections of embedded topological types of local plane curve singularities which may appear as singularities of a projective plane curve C of degree d. The goal of the present article is to give a complete (topological) classification of those cases when C is rational and it has a unique singularity which is locally irreducible (i.e. C is unicuspidal) with one Puiseux pair.
In this revised version, the mistake of the author confusing the weak transform and strict transform, pointed out by E. Bierstone, is corrected. It gives a self-contained proof of (embedded) resolution of singularities over a field of characteristic zero following the inductive algorithm of Encinas and Villamayor. A chapter explaining the background motivation for the invariants used (based upon a lecture by Villamayor) and another containing some examples demonstrating the subtle points are added.
A mixed quasi-étale quotient is the quotient of the product of a curve of genus at least 2 with itself by the action of a group which exchanges the two factors and acts freely out of a finite subset. A mixed quasi-étale surface is the minimal resolution of its singularities. We produce an algorithm computing all mixed quasi-étale surfaces with given geometric genus, irregularity, and self-intersection of the canonical class. We prove that all irregular mixed quasi-étale surfaces of general type are minimal. As application, we classify all irregular mixed quasi étale surfaces of general type wi…
The purpose of this paper is to extend the notions of generalised Poincaré series and divisorial generalised Poincaré series (of motivic nature) introduced by Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade for complex curve singularities to curves defined over perfect fields, as well as to express them in terms of an embedded resolution of curves.
We recover the Newton diagram (modulo a natural ambiguity) from the link for any surface hypersurface singularity with non-degenerate Newton principal part whose link is a rational homology sphere. As a corollary, we show that the link determines the embedded topological type, the Milnor fibration, and the multiplicity of such a germ. This proves (even a stronger version of) Zariski's Conjecture about the multiplicity for such a singularity.
We discuss to what extent the local techniques of resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero can be applied to improve singularities in general. For certain interesting classes of singularities, this leads to an embedded resolution via blowing ups in regular centers. We illustrate this for generic determinantal varieties. The article is partially expository and is addressed to non-experts who aim to construct resolutions for other special classes of singularities in positive or mixed characteristic.
We generalize the notions of F-regular and F-pure rings to pairs $(R,\a^t)$ of rings $R$ and ideals $\a \subset R$ with real exponent $t > 0$, and investigate these properties. These ``F-singularities of pairs'' correspond to singularities of pairs of arbitrary codimension in birational geometry. Via this correspondence, we prove Inversion of Adjunction of arbitrary codimension, which states that for a pair $(X,Y)$ of a smooth variety $X$ and a closed subscheme $Y \subsetneq X$, if the restriction $(Z, Y|_Z)$ to a normal $\Q$-Gorenstein closed subvariety $Z \subsetneq X$ is klt (resp. lc), the…
In a previous work we have introduced the notion of embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution, which essentially consists in allowing the final ambient space to contain abelian quotient singularities, and A'Campo's formula was calculated in this setting. Here we study the semistable reduction associated with an embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolution so as to compute the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber in the isolated case using a generalization of Steenbrink's spectral sequence. Examples of Yomdin-Lê surface singularities are presented as an application.
The critical loci of a map $f:X\to Y$ between smooth schemes over a field $k$ are the locally closed subschemes $Σ^i(f)\subseteq X$ where the differential of $f$ has constant rank. We prove that if $f : X\to \mathbb A^r$ is the general member of a suitably large linear family of maps from a smooth $k$-scheme $X$ to affine space, then the critical loci $Σ^i(f)$ are smooth, except in characteristic 2 where the first critical locus $Σ^1(f)$ may be singular at a finite set of points. Moreover, we compute the codimensions of the loci of second order singularities of such general maps $f :X \to \mat…
We study the Weierstrass preparation and division theorems over arbitrary test rings and the local structure of singularities in the space of nondegenerate arcs on algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a strengthened version of a theorem of Grinberg-Kazhdan and Drinfeld.
We introduce graded, enriched characteristic cycles as a method for encoding Morse modules of strata with respect to a constructible complex of sheaves. Using this new device, we obtain results for arbitrary complex analytic functions on arbitrarily singular complex analytic spaces.
Let $X$ be an integral affine or projective scheme of finite presentation over a perfect field. We prove that $X$ admits a resolution, that is, there exists a smooth scheme $\widetilde X$ and a projective birational morphism from $\widetilde X$ onto $X$.
We consider Fuchsian singularities of arbitrary genus and prove, in a conceptual manner, a formula for their Poincaré series. This uses Coxeter elements involving Eichler-Siegel transformations. We give geometrical interpretations for the lattices and isometries involved, lifting them to triangulated categories.
We consider the notions of Groebner fan and Newton non-degeneracy for an ideal on a toric variety, extending the two existing notions for ideals on affine spaces. We prove, without assumptions on the characteristic of the base fields, that the "Groebner fan" of such an ideal is actually a polyhedral fan and that a sub-variety defined by a Newton non-degenerate ideal on a toric variety $X_σ$ admits a toric embedded resolution of singularities $Z\longrightarrow X_σ.$
We establish an algorithm for resolution of singularities of an idealistic filtration in dimension 3 (at the local level) in positive characteristic, incorporating the method recently developed by Benito-Villamayor into our framework. Although (a global version of) our algorithm only implies embedded resolution of surfaces in the smooth ambient space of dimension 3, a classical result known before, we introduce some new invariant which effectively measures how much singularities are improved in the process of our algorithm and which strictly drops after each blow up. This is in contrast to the…
