We recover the Newton diagram (modulo a natural ambiguity) from the link for any surface hypersurface singularity with non-degenerate Newton principal part whose link is a rational homology sphere. As a corollary, we show that the link determines the embedded topological type, the Milnor fibration, and the multiplicity of such a germ. This proves (even a stronger version of) Zariski's Conjecture about the multiplicity for such a singularity.
This paper has been withdrawn. Consider an isolated complex hypersurface singularity, f(x_1,..,x_n)=0. For Newton-non-degenerate singularities the local topology is completely determined by an associated polyhedral object, the Newton diagram. "Most" singularities are not Newton-non-degenerate, for any choice of local coordinates. An old question of Arnol'd asks whether for any hypersurface singularity there exists a stabilization, f(x_1,...,x_n)+z^2_1+...+z^2_r, that becomes Newton-non-degenerate after some change of coordinates. The answer is: "totally no". We give some simple obstructions an…
We present an intersection-theoretical approach to the invariants of plane curve singularities $μ$, $δ$, $r$ related by the Milnor formula $2δ=μ+r-1$. Using Newton transformations we give formulae for $μ$, $δ$, $r$ which imply planar versions of well-known theorems on nondegenerate singularities.
We prove the constancy of the Łojasiewicz exponent in non-degenerate $μ$-constant deformations of surface singularities. This is a positive answer to a question posed by B. Teissier.
There are two well known tasks, related to Newton polyhedra: to study invariants of singularities in terms of their Newton polyhedra, and to describe Newton polyhedra of resultants and discriminants. We introduce so called resultantal singularities, whose study in terms of Newton polyhedra unifies these two tasks to a certain extent. As an application, we study topological invariants of determinantal singularities and (co)vector fields on singular varieties in terms of Newton polyhedra, and provide new formulations and proofs for a number of well known results. The computations are based on ce…
The jump of the Milnor number of an isolated singularity $f_0$ is the minimal non-zero difference between the Milnor numbers of $f_0$ and one of its deformations $(f_s)$. We give a formula for the jump in some class of surface singularities in the case deformations are non-degenerate.
We give a formula for the spectral pairs (after Steenbrink) for composite singularities of several variables. (Note that for two variable case is studyed by Nemethi-Steenbrink.) Here composite singularity is given by the equation f(g_1, ..., g_n) = 0. For technical reason, we assume that f is non-degenerated with respect to the Newton boundary.
In this paper we study some properties of the class of nu-quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities. They are defined by a very mild condition on its (projected) Newton polygon. We associate with them a Newton tree and characterize quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities among nu-quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities in terms of their Newton tree. A formula to compute the discriminant of a quasi-ordinary Weierstrass polynomial in terms of the decorations of its Newton tree is given. This allows to compute the discriminant avoiding the use of determinants and even for non Weierstrass prep…
We study the Weierstrass preparation and division theorems over arbitrary test rings and the local structure of singularities in the space of nondegenerate arcs on algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a strengthened version of a theorem of Grinberg-Kazhdan and Drinfeld.
We give a criterion to test geometric properties such as Whitney equisingularity and Thom's $a_f$ condition for new families of (possibly non-isolated) hypersurface singularities that "behave well" with respect to their Newton diagrams. As an important corollary, we obtain that in such families all members have isomorphic Milnor fibrations.
The jump of the Milnor number of an isolated singularity $f_{0}$ is the minimal non-zero difference between the Milnor numbers of $f_{0}$ and one of its deformation $(f_{s}).$ In the case $f_{s}$ are non-degenerate singularities we call the jump non-degenerate. We give a formula (an inductive algorithm using diophantine equations) for the non-degenerate jump of $f_{0}$ in the case $f_{0}$ is a convenient singularity with only one $(n-1)$-dimensional face of its Newton diagram which equivalently (in our problem) can be replaced by the Brieskorn-Pham singularities.
In an unpublished lecture note, J. Briançon observed that if $\{f_t\}$ is a family of isolated complex hypersurface singularities such that the Newton boundary of $f_t$ is independent of $t$ and $f_t$ is non-degenerate, then the corresponding family of hypersurfaces $\{f_t^{-1}(0)\}$ is Whitney equisingular (and hence topologically equisingular). A first generalization of this assertion to families with non-isolated singularities was given by the second author under a rather technical condition. In the present paper, we give a new generalization under a simpler condition.
We introduce two generalizations of Newton-non-degenerate (Nnd) singularities of hypersurfaces. Roughly speaking, an isolated hypersurface singularity is called topologically Newton-non-degenerate (tNnd) if the local embedded topological singularity type can be restored from a collection of Newton diagrams (for some coordinate choices). A singularity that is not tNnd is called essentially Newton-degenerate. For plane curves we give an explicit characterization of tNnd singularities; for hypersurfaces we provide several examples. Next, we treat the question: whether Nnd or tNnd is a property of…
It is well known that the diffeomorphism-type of the Milnor fibration of a (Newton) non-degenerate polynomial function $f$ is uniquely determined by the Newton boundary of $f$. In the present paper, we generalize this result to certain degenerate functions, namely we show that the diffeomorphism-type of the Milnor fibration of a (possibly degenerate) polynomial function of the form $f=f^1\cdots f^{k_0}$ is uniquely determined by the Newton boundaries of $f^1,\ldots, f^{k_0}$ if $\{f^{k_1}=\cdots=f^{k_m}=0\}$ is a non-degenerate complete intersection variety for any $k_1,\ldots,k_m\in \{1,\ldot…
According to the Kouchnirenko theorem, for a generic (precisely non-degenerate in the Kouchnirenko sense) isolated singularity $f$ its Milnor number $μ(f)$ is equal to the Newton number $ν(Γ_{+}(f))$ of a combinatorial object associated to $f$, the Newton polyhedron $Γ_+ (f)$. We give a simple condition characterising, in terms of $Γ_+ (f)$ and $Γ_+ (g)$, the equality $ν(Γ_{+}(f)) = ν(Γ_{+}(g))$, for any surface singularities $f$ and $g$ satisfying $Γ_+ (f) \subset Γ_+ (g)$. This is a complete solution to an Arnold's problem (1982-16) in this case.
The monodromy conjecture is an umbrella term for several conjectured relationships between poles of zeta functions, monodromy eigenvalues and roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials in arithmetic geometry and singularity theory. Even the weakest of these relations -- the Denef--Loeser conjecture on topological zeta functions -- is open for surface singularities. We prove it for a wide class of multidimensional singularities that are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polyhedra, including all such singularities of functions of four variables. A crucial difference from the known case of thr…
For a convenient and Newton non-degenerate singularity, the Milnor number is computed from the complement of its Newton diagram in the first quadrant, so-called Kouchnirenko's formula. In this paper, we consider tropical curves dual to subdivisions of this complement for a plane curve singularity and show the existence of a tropical curve satisfying a certain formula, which looks like a well-known formula for a real morsification due to A'Campo and Gusein-Zade.
We give formulas for the degrees of the spaces of foliations in P2 with a dicritical singularity of prescribed order. Blowing up such singularity induces, generically, a foliation with all but finitely many leaves transversal to the exceptional line; we also find the degree of the locus defined by imposing a leaf of total contact with the exceptional line.
Let $f$ be an isolated singularity at the origin of $\mathbb{C}^n$. One of many invariants that can be associated with $f$ is its Łojasiewicz exponent $\mathcal{L}_0 (f)$, which measures, to some extent, the topology of $f$. We give, for generic surface singularities $f$, an effective formula for $\mathcal{L}_0 (f)$ in terms of the Newton polyhedron of $f$. This is a realization of one of Arnold's postulates.
This paper formulates an elementary algorithm for resolution of singularities in a neighborhood of a singular point over a field of characteristic zero. The algorithm is composed of finite sequences of Newton polyhedra and monomial transformations and based on Weierstrass preparation theorem. This approach entails such new methods as canonical reduction and synthesis of monomial transformations as well as latency and revival of primary variables. The orders of primary variables serve as the decreasing singularity invariants for the algorithm albeit with some temporary increases. A finite parti…
In 2002, Alexeev provided a modular interpretation for the toroidal compactification of $A_g$ for the 2nd Voronoi fan. In this paper we show that pairs $(X,Θ)$ in the boundary of this moduli space are semi-log canonical, the analog of log canonical in the non-normal setting. This extends the result of Koll${á}$r stating that principally polarized abelian pairs $(X,Θ)$ are log canonical.
We give in this work an explicit combinatorial algorithm for the description of the Milnor fiber of a Newton non degenerate surface singularity as a graph manifold. This is based on a previous work by the author describing a general method for the computation of the boundary of the Milnor fiber of any reduced non isolated singularity of complex surface.
We consider divisorial filtration on the rings of functions on hypersurface singularities associated with Newton diagrams and their analogues for plane curve singularities. We compute the multi-variable Poincaré series for the latter ones.
The work is a detailed study of rational singularities of multiplicity 3 (RTP-singularities, for short). We give a list of nonisolated hypersurface singularities of which normalisations are the RTP-singularities, and construct their minimal resolution graphs by means of a subdivision of Newton polygons of those -- a method introduced by M. Oka for isolated complete intersection singularities. We show that nonisolated forms of RTP-singularities and their normalisations are both Newton non-degenerate.
In his groundbreaking work on classification of singularities with regard to right and stable equivalence of germs, Arnold has listed normal forms for all isolated hypersurface singularities over the complex numbers with either modality less than or equal to two or Milnor number less than or equal to 16. Moreover, he has described an algorithmic classifier, which determines the type of a given such singularity. In the present paper, we extend Arnold's work to a large class of singularities which is unbounded with regard to modality and Milnor number. We develop an algorithmic classifier, which…
The Milnor number, μ(X,0), and the singularity genus, p_g(X,0), are fundamental invariants of isolated hypersurface singularities (more generally, of local complete intersections). The long standing Durfee conjecture (and its generalization) predicted the inequality μ(X,0) \geq (n+1)!p_g(X,0), here n=dim(X,0). Recently we have constructed counterexamples, proposed a corrected bound and verified it for the homogeneous complete intersections. In the current paper we treat the case of germs with Newton-non-degenerate principal part when the Newton diagrams are "large enough", i.e. they are large …
We give a definition of Newton non degeneracy independent of the system of generators defining the variety. This definition extends the notion of Newton non degeneracy to varieties that are not necessarily complete intersection. As in the previous definition of non-degeneracy for complete intersection varieties, it is shown that the varieties satisfying our definition can be resolved with a toric modification. Using tools of both toric and tropical geometry we describe the toric modification in terms of the Groebner fan of the ideal defining the variety. The first part of the paper is devoted …
We study function germs on toric varieties which are nondegenerate for their Newton diagram. We express their motivic Milnor fibre in terms of their Newton diagram. We extend a formula for the motivic nearby fibre to the case of a toroidal degeneration. We illustrate this by some examples.
A codimension one singular holomorphic foliation is Newton non-degenerate if it satisfies the classical conditions of Kouchnirenko and Oka, in terms of its Newton polyhedra system. In this paper we prove that a foliation is Newton non-degenerate if and only if it admits a logarithmic reduction of singularities of a combinatorial nature.
Let $C$ be a generic complex plane plane curve with a given Newton polygon $P$. We compute the number of its inflection points and bitangents (equivalently, the number of singularities of the projectively dual curve $C^\vee$). We also prove that $C^\vee$ has no singularities other than nodes and cusps for large enough polygons $P$.
Let $f(\mathbb{z},\bar{\mathbb{z}})$ be a convenient Newton non-degenerate mixed polynomial with strongly polar non-negative mixed weighted homogeneous face functions. We consider a convenient regular simplicial cone subdivision $Σ^*$ which is admissible for $f$ and take the toric modification $\hatπ : X \to \mathbb{C}^n$ associated with $Σ^*$. We show that the toric modification resolves topologically the singularity of the mixed hypersurface germ defined by $f(\mathbb{z},\bar{\mathbb{z}})$ under the Assumption (*) (Theorem 32). This result is an extension of the first part of Theorem 11 ([4]…
We establish Kyoji Saito's continuous limit distribution for the spectrum of Newton non-degenerate hypersurface singularities. Investigating Saito's notion of dominant value in the case of irreducible plane curve singularities, we find that the log canonical threshold is strictly bounded below by the doubled inverse of the Milnor number. We show that this bound is asymptotically sharp.
Given a normal surface singularity (X,0), its link, M is a closed differentiable three dimensional manifold which carries much analytic information. It is an interesting question to ask whether, under suitable analytic and topological conditions, the geometric genus (or other analytic invariants) can be recovered from the link. The Casson invariant conjecture predicts that p_g can be identified using the Casson invariant in the case when (X,0) is a complete intersection and M has trivial first homology with integral coefficients. The Seiberg-Witten invariant conjecture predicts that the geomet…
Let $S\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ be a non-singular algebraic set and $f \colon \mathbb{C}^n \to \mathbb{C}$ be a polynomial function. It is well-known that the restriction $f|_S \colon S \to \mathbb{C}$ of $f$ on $S$ is a locally trivial fibration outside a finite set $B(f|_S) \subset \mathbb{C}.$ In this paper, we give an explicit description of a finite set $T_\infty(f|_S) \subset \mathbb{C}$ such that $B(f|_S) \subset K_0(f|_S) \cup T_\infty(f|_S),$ where $K_0(f|_S)$ denotes the set of critical values of the $f|_S.$ Furthermore, $T_\infty(f|_S)$ is contained in the set of critical values of cert…
We compare three naturally occurring multi-indexed filtrations of ideals on the local ring of a Newton nondegenerate hypersurface surface singularity with rational homology sphere, which in many cases are all distinct. These are the divisorial, the order, and the image filtrations. These filtrations are indexed by the lattice associated with a toric partial resolution of the singularity, or equivalently, the free abelian group generated by the compact facets of the Newton polyhedron. We prove that there exists a top dimensional cone contained in the Lipman cone having the property that the thr…
In a previous paper, there was defined a multi-index filtration on the ring of functions on a hypersurface singularity corresponding to its Newton diagram generalizing (for a curve singularity) the divisorial one. Its Poincaré series was computed for plane curve singularities non-degenerate with respect to their Newton diagrams. Here we use another technique to compute the Poincaré series for plane curve singularities without the assumption that they are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton diagrams. We show that the Poincaré series only depends on the Newton diagram and not on the defi…
In this paper, we determine the bifurcation set of a real polynomial function of two variables for non-degenerate case in the sense of Newton polygons by using a toric compactification. We also count the number of singular phenomena at infinity, called "cleaving" and "vanishing" in the same setting. Finally, we give an upper bound of the number of elements in the bifurcation set in terms of its Newton polygon. To obtain the upper bound, we apply toric modifications to the singularities at infinity successively.
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
We show that every $μ$-constant family of isolated hypersurface singularities satisfying a nondegeneracy condition in the sense of Kouchnirenko, is topologically trivial, also is equimultiple.
We investigate the equisingularity question for $1$-parameter deformation families of mixed polynomial functions $f_t(\mathbf{z},\bar{\mathbf{z}})$ from the Newton polygon point of view. We show that if the members $f_t$ of the family satisfy a number of elementary conditions, which can be easily described in terms of the Newton polygon, then the corresponding family of mixed hypersurfaces $f_t^{-1}(0)$ is Whitney equisingular (and hence topologically equisingular) and satisfies the Thom condition.
We prove a precise inversion of adjunction formula for the log pair associated to a non-degenerate hypersurface. As a corollary, the minimal log discrepancies of non-degenerate normal hypersurface singularities are bounded from above by dimension.
We give an algorithm to compute the Lê numbers of (the germ of) a Newton non-degenerate complex analytic function $f\colon(\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C},0)$ in terms of certain invariants attached to the Newton diagram of the function $f+z_1^{α_1}+\cdots +z_d^{α_d}$, where $d$ is the dimension of the critical locus of $f$ and $α_1,\ldots, α_d$ are sufficiently large integers. This is a version for non-isolated singularities of a famous theorem of A. G. Kouchnirenko. As a corollary, we obtain that Newton non-degenerate functions with the same Newton diagram have the same Lê numbers.
Let $f(\mathbf z)$ be an analytic function defined in the neighborhood of the origin of $\mathbb C^n$ which have some Newton degenerate faces. We generalize the Varchenko formula for the zeta function of the Milnor fibration of a Newton non-degenerate function $f$ to this case. As an application, we give an example of a pair of hypersurfaces with the same Newton boundary and the same zeta function with different tangent cones.
We prove that for two germs of analytic mappings $f,g\colon (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^p,0)$ with the same Newton polyhedra which are (Khovanskii) non-degenerate and their zero sets are complete intersections with isolated singularity at the origin, there is a piecewise analytic family $\{f_t\}$ of analytic maps with $f_0=f, f_1=g$ which has a so-called {\it uniform stable radius for the Milnor fibration}. As a corollary, we show that their Milnor numbers are equal. Also, a formula for the Milnor number is given in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the component functions. This is…
Let $f(Y)\in K[[X_1,\dots,X_d]][Y]$ be a quasi-ordinary Weierstrass polynomial with coefficients in the ring of formal power series over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the discriminant $D_f$ of $f(Y)-V$, where $V$ is a new variable. We show that the Newton polytope of $D_f$ depends only on contacts between the roots of $f(Y)$. Then we prove that $f(Y)$ is irreducible if and only if the Newton polytope of $D_f$ satisfies some arithmetic conditions. Finally we generalize these results to quasi-ordinary power series.
