We prove the existence of resolution of singularities for arbitrary (not necessarily reduced or irreducible) excellent two-dimensional schemes, via permissible blow-ups. The resolution is canonical, and functorial with respect to automorphisms or etale or Zariski localizations. We treat the embedded case as well as the non-embedded case, with or without a boundary, and we relate the diferent versions. In the non-embedded case, a boundary is a collection of locally principal closed subschemes. Our main tools are the stratifications by Hilbert-Samuel functions and the characteristic polyhedra introduced by H. Hironaka. In an appendix we show that the standard method used in characteristic zero - the theory of maximal contact - does not work for surfaces in positive characteristic (the counterexamples are hypersurfaces in affine threespace and work over any field of positive characteristic).
In this new version, we treat the case of locally noetherian but not necessarily noetherian schemes in an appropriate way. Here one does not have a finite resolution sequence, but still a canonical resolution morphism by glueing. The same techniques allow to treat algebraic spaces and stacks.
We prove that a Cohen-Macaulay normal variety $X$ has Du Bois singularities if and only if $π_*ω_{X'}(G) \simeq ω_X$ for a log resolution $π: X' \to X$, where $G$ is the reduced exceptional divisor of $π$. Many basic theorems about Du Bois singularities become transparent using this characterization (including the fact that Cohen-Macaulay log canonical singularities are Du Bois). We also give a straightforward and self-contained proof that (generalizations of) semi-log-canonical singularities are Du Bois, in the Cohen-Macaulay case. It also follows that the Kodaira vanishing theorem holds for …
In this paper, we prove that klt singularities are invariant under deformations if the generic fiber is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein. We also obtain a similar result for slc singularities. These are generalizations of results of Esnault-Viehweg and S. Ishii.
In this paper, we prove that Mather-Jacobian (MJ) singularities are preserved under the process of generic linkage. More precisely, let $X$ be a variety with MJ-canonical (resp. MJ-log canonical) singularities. Then a generic link of $X$ is also MJ-canonical (resp. MJ-log canonical). This further leads us to a result on minimal log discrepancies under generic linkage.
We give a canonical construction of a balanced big Cohen-Macaulay algebra for a domain of finite type over $\mathbb C$ by taking ultraproducts of absolute integral closures in positive characteristic. This yields a new tight closure characterization of rational singularities in characteristic zero.
This is a survey of some recent developments in the study of singularities related to the classification theory of algebraic varieties. In particular, the definition and basic properties of Du Bois singularities and their connections to the more commonly known singularities of the minimal model program are reviewed and discussed.
In this paper, we investigate the relationship of F-regular (resp. F-pure) rings and log terminal (resp. log canonical) singularities. Also, we extend the notions of F-regularity and F-purity to "F-singularities of pairs." The notions of F-regular and F-pure rings in characteristic $p>0$ are characterized by a splitting of the Frobenius map, and define some classes of rings having "mild" singularities. On the other hand, there are notions of log terminal and log canonical singularities defined via resolutions of singularities in characteristic zero. These are defined also for pairs of a normal…
A singularity in characteristic zero is said to be of dense F-pure type if its modulo p reduction is locally F-split for infinitely many p. We prove that if $x \in X$ is an isolated log canonical singularity with $μ(x \in X) \le 2$ (see Definition 1.4 for the definition of the invariant $μ$), then it is of dense F-pure type. As a corollary, we prove the equivalence of log canonicity and being of dense F-pure type in the case of three-dimensional isolated singularities.
For a characteristic $p > 0$ variety $X$ with controlled $F$-singularities, we state conditions which imply that a divisorial sheaf is Cohen-Macaulay or at least has depth $\geq 3$ at certain points. This mirrors results of Kollár for varieties in characteristic zero. As an application, we show that that relative canonical sheaves are compatible with arbitrary base change for certain families with sharply $F$-pure fibers.
If $X$ is Frobenius split, then so is its normalization and we explore conditions which imply the converse. To do this, we recall that given an $\mathcal{O}_X$-linear map $ϕ: F_* \mathcal{O}_X \to \mathcal{O}_X$, it always extends to a map $\barϕ$ on the normalization of $X$. In this paper, we study when the surjectivity of $\barϕ$ implies the surjectivity of $ϕ$. While this doesn't occur generally, we show it always happens if certain tameness conditions are satisfied for the normalization map. Our result has geometric consequences including a connection between $F$-pure singularities and sem…
We prove that the class of log canonical rational singularities is closed under the basic operations of the minimal model program. We also give some supplementary results on the minimal model program for log canonical surfaces.
We show that any union of slc strata of a Fano log pair with semi-log canonical singularities is simply connected. In particular, Fano log pairs with semi-log canonical singularities are simply connected, which confirms a conjecture of the first author.
In this paper the detailed classification of three-dimensional exceptional canonical hypersurface singularities which don't satisfy the condition of well-formedness is given. This result completes the classification of three-dimensional exceptional log canonical hypersurface singularities started in [4] (math.AG 0201025).
In this paper, we classify del Pezzo foliations on projective manifolds of rank at least 3 and with log canonical singularities in the sense of McQuillan.
In this article, we show that if $X$ is an excellent surface with rational singularities, the constant sheaf $\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}$ is a dualizing complex. In coefficient $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$, we also prove that the obstruction for $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ to become a dualizing complex lying on the divisor class groups at singular points. As applications, we study the perverse sheaves and the weights of $\ell$-adic cohomology groups on such surfaces.
The log canonical thresholds of irreducible quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities are computed, using an explicit list of pole candidates for the motivic zeta function found by the last two authors.
The purpose of this note is to show that in characteristic two there exists a smooth Fano variety for which the square of the anti-canonical bundle violates Kodaira vanishing. This is used in turn to construct non-Cohen-Macaulay canonical singularities in characteristic two.
We prove that the anti-canonical divisors of weak Fano 3-folds with log canonical singularities are semiample. Moreover, we consider semiampleness of the anti-log canonical divisor of any weak log Fano pair with log canonical singularities. We show semiampleness dose not hold in general by constructing several examples. Based on those examples, we propose sufficient conditions which seem to be the best possible and we prove semiampleness under such conditions. In particular we derive semiampleness of the anti-canonical divisors of log canonical weak Fano 4-folds whose lc centers are at most 1-…
We show that locally acyclic cluster algebras have (at worst) canonical singularities. In fact, we prove that locally acyclic cluster algebras of positive characteristic are strongly F-regular. In addition, we show that upper cluster algebras are always Frobenius split by a canonically defined splitting, and that they have a free canonical module of rank one. We also give examples to show that not all upper cluster algebras are F-regular if the local acyclicity is dropped.
We give a classification of the dual graphs of the exceptional divisors on the minimal resolutions of log canonical foliation singularities on surfaces. For an application, we show the set of foliated minimal log discrepancies for foliated surface triples satisfies the ascending chain condition and a Grauert-Riemenschneider type vanishing theorem for foliated surfaces with good log canonical foliation singularities.
The LCS locus is an essential ingredient in the proof of fundamental results of Log Minimal Model Program, such as nonvanishing and base point freeness theorems. We prove in this paper that the LCS locus of a log canonical variety has seminormal singularities.
This paper gives the all possible global indices of log Calabi-Yau 3-folds with standard coefficients on the boundaries and having lc, non-klt singularities. This follows easily from the discussion in the paper: The indices of log canonical singularities by Fujino (AG/9909035).
Let $Y$ be a generic link of a subvariety $X$ of a nonsingular variety $A$. We give a description of the Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf of $Y$ in terms of the multiplier ideal sheaves associated to $X$ and use it to study the singularities of $Y$. As the first application, we give a criterion when $Y$ has rational singularities and show that log canonical threshold increases and log canonical pairs are preserved in generic linkage. As another application we give a quick and simple liaison method to generalize the results of de Fernex-Ein and Chardin-Ulrich on the Castelnuovo-Mumford r…
We show that if $(X,B)$ is a log canonical pair with $\dim X\geq d+2$, whose non-klt centers have dimension $\geq d$, then $X$ is has depth $\ge d+2$ at every closed point.
In this paper, we shall discuss Hilbert property of ${\rm Hilb}^{G}(\mathbb{C}^{3})$, Fujiki-Oka resolutions and iterated Fujiki-Oka resolutions for three dimensional canonical cyclic quotient singularities by using the classification shown by Ishida and Iwashita\cite{II}. Finally, we shall prove that there exists a Hilbert desingularization for any three dimensional canonical cyclic quotient singularity.
Let $(P\in X,Δ)$ be a three dimensional log canonical pair such that $Δ$ has only standard coefficients and $P$ is a center of log canonical singularities for $(X,Δ)$. Then we get an effective bound of the indices of these pairs and actually determine all the possible indices. Furthermore, under certain assumptions including the log Minimal Model Program, an effective bound is also obtained in dimension $n\geq 4$.
This paper gives a simple example of a family of Calabi-Yaus of any dimension with canonical singularities of dimension one, whose Kuranishi space is singular. Thus the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov unobstructedness theorem is not true for Calabi-Yaus with canonical singularities.
We classify the canonical threefold singularities that allow an effective two-torus action. This extends classification results of Mori on terminal threefold singularities and of Ishida and Iwashita on toric canonical threefold singularities. Our classification relies on lattice point emptiness of certain polytopal complexes with rational vertices. Scaling the polytopes by the least common multiple $k$ of the respective denominators, we investigate $k$-emptiness of polytopes with integer vertices. We show that two dimensional $k$-empty polytopes either are sporadic or come in series given by F…
We prove that the cohomology sheaves of the relative dualizing complex of a flat family of varieties with semi-log-canonical or Du Bois singularities are flat and commute with base change. This is a local version of our earlier similar result where the family was assumed to be projective. We also derive several consequences for deformations of semi-log-canonical and of Du Bois singularities.
In this paper we study $(ε,δ)$-lc singularites, i.e. $ε$-lc singularities admitting a $δ$-plt blow-up. We prove that $n$-dimensional $(ε,δ)$-lc singularities are bounded up to a deformation, and $2$-dimensional $(ε,δ)$-lc singularities form a bounded family. Furthermore, we give an example which shows that $(ε,δ)$-lc singularities are not bounded in higher dimensions, even in the analytic sense.
For a normal subvariety $V$ of ${\bf C}^n$ with a good ${\bf C}^*$-action we give a simple characterization for when it has only log canonical, log terminal or rational singularities. Moreover we are able to give formulas for the plurigenera of isolated singular points of such varieties and of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of $V\backslash \{0\}$. For this purpose we introduce sheaves of $m$-canonical and $L^{2,m}$-canonical forms on normal complex spaces. For the case of affine varieties with good ${\bf C}^*$-action we give an explicit formula for these sheaves in terms of the grading of t…
We consider Fano threefolds $X$ with canonical Gorenstein singularities. Under additional assumption that $X$ has at least one non-cDV point we prove a sharp bound of the degree: $-K_X^3\le 72$.
In this paper we apply Shokurov's inductive method to study terminal and canonical singularities. As an easy consequence of the Minimal Model Program we show that for any three-dimensional log terminal singularity there exists some special, so called, plt blow-up. We discuss properties of them and construct some examples.
In this paper we consider the problem of finding explicitly canonical ideals of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. We show that Gorenstein ideals contained in a high power of the maximal ideal are canonical ideals. In the codimension two case, from a Hilbert-Burch resolution, we show how to construct canonical ideals of curve singularities. Finally, we translate the problem of the analytic classification of curve singularities to the classification of local Artin Gorenstein rings with suitable length.
In this paper we calculate genaral n-canonical divisors on smoothable semi-log-terminal singularities in dimension 2, in other words, the full sheaves associated to the double dual of the nth tensor power of the dualizing sheaves of these singularities. And as its application we give the inequality which bound the Gorenstein index by the local self intersection number of the n-canonical divisor of these singularities.
An $R$-algebra $S$ is $R$-solid if there exists a nonzero $R$-linear map $S \rightarrow R$. In characteristic $p$, the study of $F$-singularities such as Frobenius splittings implicitly rely on the $R$-solidity of $R^{1/p}$. Following recent results of the first two authors on the Frobenius non-splitting of certain excellent $F$-pure rings, in this paper we use the notion of solidity to systematically study the notion of excellence, with an emphasis on $F$-singularities. We show that for rings $R$ essentially of finite type over complete local rings of characteristic $p$, reducedness implies t…
We point out an interesting relation between hypersurface elliptic singularities and log Enriques surfaces: with a few exceptions, every hypersurface elliptic singularity define some klt log Enriques surface $(S,Diff)$. In many cases, the log canonical cover of $(S,Diff)$ is a Du Val K3 surface with ``large'' nonsymplectic automorphism group.
We give a method to investigate isolated log canonical singularities with index one which are not log terminal. Our method depends on the minimal model program. One of the main purposes is to prove that our invariant coincides with Ishii's Hodge theoretic invariant.
We introduce a new class of finite dimensional algebras, called extended canonical, investigate their derived categories and study the spectral behavior of their Coxeter transformations. The subject relates to the triangulated categories of (graded) singularities introduced by R. Buchweitz (1987) and D. Orlov (2004).
A conic bundle is a contraction $X\to Z$ between normal varieties of relative dimension $1$ such that $-K_X$ is relatively ample. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov which predicts that, if $X\to Z$ is a conic bundle such that $X$ has canonical singularities and $Z$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein, then $Z$ is always $\frac{1}{2}$-lc, and the multiplicities of the fibers over codimension $1$ points are bounded from above by $2$. Both values $\frac{1}{2}$ and $2$ are sharp. This is achieved by solving a more general conjecture of Shokurov on singularities of bases of lc-trivial fibrations of relative …
We introduce a lifting property for local cohomology, which leads to a unified treatment of the dualizing complex for flat morphisms with semi-log-canonical, Du Bois or F-pure fibers. As a consequence we obtain that, in all 3 cases, the cohomology sheaves of the relative dualizing complex are flat and commute with base change. We also derive several consequences for deformations of semi-log-canonical, Du Bois and F-pure singularities.
A recurring difficulty in the Minimal Model Program is that while log terminal singularities are quite well behaved (for instance, they are rational), log canonical singularities are much more complicated; they need not even be Cohen-Macaulay. The aim of this paper is to prove that log canonical singularities are Du Bois. The concept of Du Bois singularities, introduced by Steenbrink, is a weakening of rationality. We also prove flatness of the cohomology sheaves of the relative dualizing complex of a projective family with Du Bois fibers. This implies that each connected component of the modu…
In characteristic zero, quotient singularities are log terminal. Moreover, we can check whether a quotient variety is canonical or not by using only the age of each element of the relevant finite group if the group does not have pseudo-reflections. In positive characteristic, a quotient variety is not log terminal, in general. In this paper, we give an example of the quotient variety which is not log terminal such that the quotient varieties associated to any proper subgroups are canonical. In particular, we cannot determine whether a given quotient singularity is canonical by looking at prope…
We prove that if X is a locally complete intersection variety, then X has all the jet schemes irreducible if and only if X has canonical singularities. After embedding X in a smooth variety Y, we use motivic integration to express the condition that X has irreducible jet schemes in terms of data coming from an embedded resolution of X in Y. We show that this condition is equivalent with having canonical singularities. In the appendix, this result is used to prove a generalization of Kostant's freeness theorem to the setting of jet schemes.
As is well known, the "usual discrepancy" is defined for a normal Q-Gorenstein variety. By using this discrepancy we can define a canonical singularity and a log canonical singularity. In the same way, by using a new notion, Mather-Jacobian discrepancy introduced in recent papers we can define a "canonical singularity" and a "log canonical singularity" for not necessarily normal or Q-Gorenstein varieties. In this paper, we show basic properties of these singularities, behavior of these singularities under deformations and determine all these singularities of dimension up to 2.
We continue to study and present concrete examples in characteristic 2 of compound Du Val singularities defined over an algebraically closed field which have one dimensional singular loci but cannot be written as products (a rational double point) x (a curve) up to analytic isomorphism at any point of the loci. Unlike in other characteristics, we find a large number of such examples whose general hyperplane sections have rational double points of type D. We consider these compound Du Val singularities as a special class of canonical singularities, intend to complete classification in arbitrary…
1) Assuming log Minimal Model Conjecture, we give a construction of a complete moduli space of stable log pairs of arbitrary dimension generalizing directly the space M_{g,n} of pointed stable curves. Each stable pair has semi log canonical singularities. 2) We prove that a stable quasiabelian pair, defined by author and I.Nakamura as the limit of abelian varieties with theta divisors, has semi log canonical singularities.
In this article, we give the structure of codimension one foliations with canonical singularities and numerically trivial canonical class on varieties with klt singularities. Building on recent works of Spicer, Cascini - Spicer and Spicer - Svaldi, we then describe the birational geometry of rank two foliations with canonical singularities and canonical class of numerical dimension zero on complex projective threefolds.
We describe a class of isolated nondegenerate hypersurface singularities that give a polynomial contribution to Batyrev's stringy E-function. These singularities are obtained by imposing a natural condition on the facets of the Newton polyhedron, and they are strictly canonical. We prove that Batyrev's conjecture concerning the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers is true for complete varieties with such singularities, under some additional hypotheses on the defining polynomials (e.g. convenient or weighted homogeneous). The proof uses combinatorics on lattice polytopes. The results form a s…
We consider pairs (X,A), where X is a variety with klt singularities and A is a formal product of ideals on X with exponents in a fixed set that satisfies the Descending Chain Condition. We also assume that X has (formally) bounded singularities, in the sense that it is, formally locally, a subvariety in a fixed affine space defined by equations of bounded degree. We prove in this context a conjecture of Shokurov, predicting that the set of log canonical thresholds for such pairs satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition.
