In this article, we show that if $X$ is an excellent surface with rational singularities, the constant sheaf $\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}$ is a dualizing complex. In coefficient $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$, we also prove that the obstruction for $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$ to become a dualizing complex lying on the divisor class groups at singular points. As applications, we study the perverse sheaves and the weights of $\ell$-adic cohomology groups on such surfaces.
The eigenvalues of Frobenius acting on $\ell$-adic cohomology of a complete intersection over a finite field have the divisibility predicted by the theorem of Ax and Katz. We have corrected some unforgivable typos.
These are the notes accompanying 13 lectures given by the authors at the Clay Mathematics Institute Summer School 2014 in Madrid. The notes give an introduction into the theory of $\ell$-adic sheaves with emphasis on their ramification theory on curves.
Tautological systems was introduced in Lian-Yau as the system of differential equations satisfied by period integrals of hyperplane sections of some complex projective homogenous varieties. We introduce the $\ell$-adic tautological systems for the case where the ground field is of characteristic $p$.
To a torus action on a complex vector space, Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky introduce a system of differential equations, called the GKZ hypergeometric system. Its solutions are GKZ hypergeometric functions. We study the $\ell$-adic counterpart of the GKZ hypergeometric system, which we call the $\ell$-adic GKZ hypergeometric sheaf. It is an object in the derived category of $\ell$-adic sheaves on the affine space over a finite field. Traces of Frobenius on stalks of this object at rational points of the affine space define the hypergeometric functions over the finite field introduced by Gel…
In this article we introduce the notion of a quasi-compatible system of Galois representations. The quasi-compatibility condition is a slight relaxation of the classical compatibility condition in the sense of Serre. The main theorem that we prove is the following: Let $M$ be an abelian motive, in the sense of Yves André. Then the $\ell$-adic realisations of $M$ form a quasi-compatible system of Galois representations. (In fact, we actually prove something stronger. See theorem 5.1.) As an application, we deduce that the absolute rank of the $\ell$-adic monodromy groups of $M$ does not depend …
In this thesis, two $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-local systems, $\vphantom{\mathcal{E}}^\circ \mathcal{E}$ and $\vphantom{E}^\circ \mathcal{E}^\prime$ on the regular unipotent subvariety $\mathcal{U}_{0,K}$ of $p$-adic $\operatorname{SL}_2(K)$ are constructed. Making use of the equivalence between $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_\ell$-local systems and $\ell$-adic representations of the étale fundamental group, we prove that these local systems are equivariant with respect to conjugation by $\operatorname{SL}_2(K)$ and that their nearby cycles, when taken with respect to appropriate integral models, descend to l…
Building on recent results by A. Blanc, M. Robalo and the authors, we present an $\ell$-adic trace formula for smooth and proper dg-categories over a base $\mathbb{E}_{\infty}$-algebra $B$. We also give a variant when $B$ is only an $\mathbb{E}_2$-algebra. As an application of this trace formula, we propose a strategy of proof of Bloch's conductor conjecture. This is a research announcement and detailed proofs will appear elsewhere.
We study the motivic and $\ell$-adic realizations of the dg category of singularities of the zero locus of a global section of a line bundle over a regular scheme. We will then use the formula obtained in this way together with a theorem due to D.~Orlov and J.~Burke - M.~Walker to give a formula for the $\ell$-adic realization of the dg category of singularities of the special fiber of a scheme over a regular local ring of dimension $n$.
Let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ be a finitely generated field of characteristic zero and $X/K$ a smooth projective variety. Fix $q\in\mathbb{N}$. For every prime number $\ell$ let $ρ_\ell$ be the representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(K)$ on the étale cohomology group $H^q(X_{\overline{K}}, \mathbb{Q}_\ell)$. For a field $k$ we denote by $k_{\mathrm{ab}}$ its maximal abelian Galois extension. We prove that there exist finite Galois extensions $k/\mathbb{Q}$ and $F/K$ such that the restricted family of representations $(ρ_\ell|\mathrm{Gal}(k_{\mathrm{ab}} F))_\ell$ is group theoretically independent in the sense t…
We show that in positive characteristic special loci of deformation spaces of rank one $\ell$-adic local systems are quasilinear. From this we deduce the Hard Lefschetz theorem for rank one $\ell$-adic local systems and a generic vanishing theorem. Last version: a few typos corrected
Let $X$ be a smooth scheme over an algebraically closed field. When $X$ is proper, it was proved in \cite{me1} that the moduli of $\ell$-adic continuous representations of $π_1^\et(X)$, $\LocSys(X)$, is representable by a (derived) $\Ql$-analytic space. However, in the non-proper case one cannot expect that the results of \cite{me1} hold mutatis mutandis. Instead, assuming $\ell$ is invertible in $X$, one has to bound the ramification at infinity of those considered continuous representations. The main goal of the current text is to give a proof of such representability statements in the open …
In this paper, we give an explicit description of the de Rham and p-adic polylogarithms for elliptic curves using the Kronecker theta function. We prove in particular that when the elliptic curve has complex multiplication and good reduction at p, then the specializations to torsion points of the p-adic elliptic polylogarithm are related to p-adic Eisenstein-Kronecker numbers, proving a p-adic analogue of the result of Beilinson and Levin expressing the complex elliptic polylogarithm in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker-Lerch series. Our result is valid even if the elliptic curve has supersingular…
Let $X$ be a smooth connected projective algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field, and let $S$ be a finite nonempty closed subset in $X$. We study deformations of $\overline{\mathbb F}_\ell$-sheaves. The universal deformation space is a formal scheme. Its generic fiber has a rigid analytic space structure. By studying this rigid analytic space, we prove a conjecture of Katz which says that if a lisse $\overline{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaf $\mathcal F$ on $X-S$ is irreducible and rigid, then we have $\mathrm{dim}\, H^1(X,j_\ast\mathcal End(\mathcal F))=2g$, where $j:X-S\to X$ is the open i…
We provide an effective version of Katz' criterion for finiteness of the monodromy group of a lisse, pure of weight zero, $\ell$-adic sheaf on a normal variety over a finite field, depending on the numerical complexity of the sheaf
It is well known that the integral identity conjecture is of prime importance in Kontsevich-Soibelman's theory of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants for non-commutative Calabi-Yau threfolds. In this article we consider its numerical version and make it a complete demonstration in the case where the potential is a polynomial and the ground field is algebraically closed. The foundamental tool is the Berkovich spaces whose crucial point is how to use the comparison theorem for nearby cycles as well as the Künneth isomorphism for cohomology with compact support.
The goal of this paper is to motivate a boundedness conjecture on nearby slopes of $\ell$-adic sheaves in positive characteristic, and to prove it for smooth curves. For a constructible $\ell$-adic sheaf, we prove the finiteness of the set of nearby slopes associated to a given morphism. For the constant sheaf, we prove the vanishing of nearby slopes in case of generalized semi-stable reduction.
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
We introduce a notion of compatibility for families $(\mathcal{F}_{\ell})_{\ell}$ of bounded constructible $\ell$-adic complexes of étale sheaves on schemes. For schemes of finite type over a field, this notion is preserved by the usual six functors. We prove that the compatibility of a family is preserved by the nearby cycles functor and by the linearized $\varepsilon$-factors introduced recently by the author. We establish independence of $\ell$ for the characteristic cycles and characteristic $\varepsilon$-cycles of compatible families.
We introduce a notion of inertial equivalence for integral $\ell$-adic representation of the Galois group of a global field. We show that the collection of continuous, semisimple, pure $\ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a global field lifting a fixed absolutely irreducible residual representation and with given inertial type outside a fixed finite set of places is uniformly bounded independent of the inertial type.
Given a Galois étale map of varieties $π:Y\to X$ and an $\ell$-adic sheaf or derived category object $P\in D^b_c(Y,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, we study two cohomological operations: the tensor direct image and (in the case of perverse sheaves) the convolution direct image, which give objects of $D^b_c(X,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, and can be used to improve the estimates on some partial exponential sums and the number of rational points on certain varieties.
Let $K$ be a finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We consider the family of $\ell$-adic representations ($\ell$ varies through the set of all prime numbers) of the absolute Galois group of $K$, attached to $\ell$-adic cohomology of a smooth separated scheme of finite type over $K$. We prove that the fields cut out from the algebraic closure of $K$ by the kernels of the representations of the family are linearly disjoint over a finite extension of K. This gives a positive answer to a question asked by Serre in 1991.

We describe how a systematic use the deep methods from $\ell$-adic cohomology pioneered by Grothendieck and Deligne and further developed by Katz, Laumon allow to make progress on various classical questions from analytic number theory. This text is an extended version of a series of lectures given by the third and fourth authors during the 2016 Arizona Winter School.
We propose a conjecture on the relative twist formula of $\ell$-adic sheaves, which can be viewed as a generalization of Kato-Saito's conjecture. We verify this conjecture under some transversal assumptions. We also define a relative cohomological characteristic class and prove that its formation is compatible with proper push-forward. A conjectural relation is also given between the relative twist formula and the relative cohomological characteristic class.
Suppose $\ell$ is a prime number, ${\mathbf Q}_\ell$ is the field of $\ell$-adic numbers, ${\mathbf F}_\ell$ is the finite field of $\ell$ elements, and $d$ is a positive integer. Suppose $G$ is a finite subgroup of a symplectic group $Sp_{2d}({\mathbf Q}_\ell)$. We prove that $G$ can be embedded in $Sp_{2d}({\mathbf F}_\ell)$ in such a way that the characteristic polynomials are preserved (mod $\ell$), as long as $\ell>3$.
We prove a purely local form of a result of Saito and Yatagawa. They proved that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf is determined by wild ramification of the sheaf along the boundary of a compactification. But they had to consider ramification at all the points of the compactification. We give a pointwise result, that is, we prove that the characteristic cycle of a constructible étale sheaf around a point is determined by wild ramification at the point. The key ingredient is to prove that wild ramification of the stalk of the nearby cycle complex of a constructible étale s…
Suppose $F$ is either a global field or a finitely generated extension of ${\mathbf Q}$, $A$ is an abelian variety over $F$, and $\ell$ is a prime not equal to the characteristic of $F$. Let $Z$ denote the center of the endomorphism algebra of $A$. Let $G$ denote the group of ${\mathbf Q}_\ell$-points of the identity connected component of the Zariski closure of the image of the $\ell$-adic representation associated to $A$. We prove the $\ell$-independence of the intersection of $G$ with the torsion subgroup of $Z$. Our results provide evidence in the direction of the Mumford-Tate Conjecture.
We study the relation of the middle convolution to the $\ell$-adic Fourier transformation in the étale context. Using Katz' work and Laumon's theory of local Fourier transformations we obtain a detailed description of the local monodromy and the determinant of Katz' middle convolution functor $\MC_χ$ in the tame case. The theory of local $ε$-constants then implies that the property of an étale sheaf of having an at most quadratic determinant is often preserved under $\MC_χ$ if $χ$ is quadratic.
We determine the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology and the eigenvalues of the geometric Frobenius for the moduli stack $\mathcal{L}_{1,12n} := \mathrm{Hom}_{n}(\mathbb{P}^1, \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,1})$ of stable elliptic fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ with $12n$ nodal singular fibers and a marked Weierstrass section over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ with $\mathrm{char}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q) \neq 2,3$.
Given primes $\ell\ne p$, we record here a $p$-adic valued Fourier theory on a local field over $\mathbf{Q}_\ell$, which is developed under the perspective of group schemes. As an application, by substituting rigid analysis for complex analysis, it leads naturally to the $p$-adic local functional equation at $\ell$, which strongly resembles the complex one in Tate's thesis.
We study Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. We give sufficient conditions for such representations to decompose as a product, and apply them to prove arithmetical analogues of results shown by Moonen and Zarhin in the context of complex abelian varieties (of dimension at most 5).
v2: For a projective variety defined over a finite field with $q$ elements, it is shown that as algebraic integers, the eigenvalues of the geometric Frobenius acting on $\ell$-adic cohomology have higher than known $q$-divisibility beyond the middle dimension. This sharpens both Deligne's integrality theorem and the cohomological divisibility theorem proven by the first author and N. Katz. Similar lower bounds are proved for the Hodge level for a complex variety beyond the middle dimension, improving earlier results in this direction. We discuss the affine case. The previous version contained …
Let $K$ be a number field, $n>4$ an integer, $f(x)$ an irreducible polynomial over $K$ of degree $n$, whose Galois group is either the full symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$. Suppose $C:y^2=f(x)$ is the corresponding hyperelliptic curve and $J$ its jacobian defined over $K$. For each prime $\ell$ we write $V_{\ell}(J)$ for the $Q_{\ell}$-Tate module of $J$ and $e_{\ell}$ for the Riemann form on $V_{\ell}(J)$ attached to the theta divisor. (Here $Q_{\ell}$ is the field of $\ell$-adic numbers.) We write $sp(V_{\ell}(J))$ for the $Q_{\ell}$-Lie algebra of the symplectic group o…
For a given point P in the group of K-rational points E(K) of an elliptic curve, we consider the sequence of values (F_1(P),F_2(P),F_3(P),...) of the division polynomials of E at P. If K is a finite field, we prove that the sequence is periodic. If K/Q_p is a local field, we prove (under certain hypotheses) that there is a power q=p^e so that for all m > 0, the limit as k goes to infinity of F_{mq^{k}}(P) exists in K and is algebraic over Q(E). We apply this result to prove an analogous p-adic limit and algebraicity result for elliptic divisibility sequences.
Let $K\in L^1(\mathbb R)$ and let $f\in L^\infty(\mathbb R)$ be two functions on $\mathbb R$. The convolution $$(K\ast f)(x)=\int_{\mathbb R}K(x-y)f(y)dy$$ can be considered as an average of $f$ with weight defined by $K$. Wiener's Tauberian theorem says that under suitable conditions, if $$\lim_{x\to \infty}(K\ast f)(x)=\lim_{x\to \infty} (K\ast A)(x)$$ for some constant $A$, then $$\lim_{x\to \infty}f(x)=A.$$ We prove the following $\ell$-adic analogue of this theorem: Suppose $K,F, G$ are perverse $\ell$-adic sheaves on the affine line $\mathbb A$ over an algebraically closed field of chara…
Let $S$ be a noetherian scheme and $f\colon X\to S$ be a smooth morphism of relative dimension 1. For a locally constant sheaf on the complement of a divisor in $X$ at over $S$, Deligne and Laumon proved that the universal local acyclicity is equivalent to the local constancy of Swan conductors. In this article, assuming the universal local acyclicity, we show an analogous result of the continuity of local epsilon factors. We also give a generalization of this result to a family of isolated singularities.
In this note, we consider function fields of higher-dimensional algebraic varieties defined over non-local fields, and show how the Galois action on the cohomology such function fields can be used to parameterize their divisorial valuations. By applying a recent theorem of Pop, we observe that, in dimension $\geq 3$, this information is enough to completely determine the function field and the base-field in question.
Let F be the function field of a curve over a p-adic field. Let D/F be a central division algebra of prime exponent $\ell$ which is different from p. Assume that F contains a primitive ${\ell}^2$-th root of unity. Then the group $SK_1(D):=SL_1(D)/[D^*, D^*]$ is trivial.
Given an abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ over a number field $K$, and a prime $\ell$, the $\ell^n$-torsion points of $A$ give rise to a representation $ρ_{A, \ell^n} : \gal(\bar{K} / K) \to \gl_{2g}(\zz/\ell^n\zz)$. In particular, we get a mod-$\ell$ representation $ρ_{A, \ell} : \gal(\bar{K} / K) \to \gl_{2g}(\ff_\ell)$and an $\ell$-adic representation $ρ_{A, \ell} : \gal(\bar{K} / K) \to \gl_{2g}(\zz_\ell)$. In this paper, we describe the possible determinants of subrepresentations (or more generally, subquotients) of these two representation for $\ell$ a prime number, as $A$ varies ove…
We calculate the local Fourier transformations for a class of $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaves. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Laumon and Malgrange. As an application, we calculate the local monodromy of $\ell$-adic hypergeometric sheaves introduced by Katz. We also discuss the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Turrittin-Levelt Theorem for $D$-modules. The method used in this paper can be used to show a conjecture of Ramero which states that the Fourier transformation of an analytic sheaf with meromorphic ramification still has meromorphic ramification.
