We introduce a notion of inertial equivalence for integral $\ell$-adic representation of the Galois group of a global field. We show that the collection of continuous, semisimple, pure $\ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a global field lifting a fixed absolutely irreducible residual representation and with given inertial type outside a fixed finite set of places is uniformly bounded independent of the inertial type.
The Hodge-Tate spectral sequence for a proper smooth variety over a p-adic field provides a framework for us to revisit Faltings' approach to p-adic Hodge theory and to fill in many details. The spectral sequence is obtained from the Cartan-Leray spectral sequence for the canonical projection from the Faltings topos to the étale topos of an integral model of the variety. Its abutment is computed by Faltings' main comparison theorem from which derive all comparison theorems between p-adic étale cohomology and other p-adic cohomologies, and its initial term is related to the sheaf of differentia…
We give an alternative proof of Faltings's theorem (Mordell's conjecture): a curve of genus at least two over a number field has finitely many rational points. Our argument utilizes the set-up of Faltings's original proof, but is in spirit closer to the methods of Chabauty and Kim: we replace the use of abelian varieties by a more detailed analysis of the variation of $p$-adic Galois representations in a family of algebraic varieties. The key inputs into this analysis are the comparison theorems of $p$-adic Hodge theory, and explicit topological computations of monodromy. By the same methods w…
We prove that a selfdual $GL_3$-Galois representation constructed by van Geemen and Top is isomorphic to a quadratic twist of the symmetric square of the Tate module of an elliptic curve. This is an application of our refinement of the Faltings-Serre method to $3$-dimensional Galois representations with the ground field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}$. The proof makes use of the Faltings-Serre method, $\ell$-adic Lie algebra, and Burnside groups.
We give a new proof of Faltings's p-adic Eichler-Shimura decomposition of the modular curves via BGG methods and the Hodge-Tate period map. The key property is the relation between the Tate module and the Faltings extension, which was already used in the original proof. Then, we construct overconvergent Eichler-Shimura (ES) maps for the modular curves providing ''the second half'' of the overconvergent ES map of Andreatta-Iovita-Stevens. We use higher Coleman theory on the modular curve developed by Boxer-Pilloni to show that the small slope part of the ES maps interpolates the classical p-adi…
We study the relationship between potential equivalence and character theory; we observe that potential equivalence of a representation $ρ$ is determined by an equality of an $m$-power character $g\mapsto Tr(ρ(g^m))$ for some natural number $m$. Using this, we extend Faltings' finiteness criteria to determine the equivalence of two $\ell$-adic, semisimple representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field, to the context of potential equivalence. We also discuss finiteness results for twist unramified representations.
Faltings initiated in 2005 a p-adic analogue of the (complex) Simpson correspondence whose construction has been taken up by various authors, according to several approaches. Following the one we initiated previously, we present an overview of a new monograph developing new features of the p-adic Simpson correspondence, inspired by our construction of the relative Hodge-Tate spectral sequence. First, we address the connection to Hodge-Tate local systems. Second, we establish the functoriality of the p-adic Simpson correspondence by proper direct image. Along the way, we expand the scope of our…
We relate various approaches to coefficient systems in relative integral $p$-adic Hodge theory, working in the geometric context over the ring of integers of a perfectoid field. These include small generalised representations over $A_{\text{inf}}$ inspired by Faltings, modules with q-connection in the sense of q-de Rham cohomology, crystals on the prismatic site of Bhatt--Scholze, and q-deformations of Higgs bundles.
We construct a new cohomology theory for proper smooth (formal) schemes over the ring of integers of C_p. It takes values in a mixed-characteristic analogue of Dieudonne modules, which was previously defined by Fargues as a version of Breuil-Kisin modules. Notably, this cohomology theory specializes to all other known p-adic cohomology theories, such as crystalline, de Rham and etale cohomology, which allows us to prove strong integral comparison theorems. The construction of the cohomology theory relies on Faltings's almost purity theorem, along with a certain functor $Lη$ on the derived cate…
A technical ingredient in Faltings' original approach to p-adic comparison theorems involves the construction of $K(π, 1)$-neighborhoods for a smooth scheme X over a mixed characteristic dvr with a perfect residue field: every point of X has an open neighborhood whose general fiber is a $K(π, 1)$ scheme (a notion analogous to having a contractible universal cover). We show how to extend this result to the logarithmically smooth case, which might help to simplify some proofs in p-adic Hodge theory. The main ingredient of the proof is a variant of a trick of Nagata used in his proof of the Noeth…
We develop a new approach for the p-adic Simpson correspondence, closely related to the original approach of Faltings, but also inspired by the work of Ogus and Vologodsky on an analogue in characteristic p>0. This first article is devoted to the local aspects of the theory.
For a prime number p>2, we give a direct proof of Breuil's classification of killed by p finite flat group schemes over the valuation ring of a p-adic field with perfect residue field. As application we prove that the Galois modules of geometric points of such group schemes and of their characteristic p analogues coming from Faltings's strict modules can be identified via the Fontaine-Wintenberger field-of-norms functor.
We present an algorithm to determine if the $L$-series associated to an automorphic representation and the one associated to an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field agree. By the work of Harris-Soudry-Taylor, Taylor and Berger-Harcos (cf. \cite{harris-taylor}, \cite{taylorII} and \cite{berger-harcos}) we can associate to an automorphic representation a family of compatible $p$-adic representations. Our algorithm is based on Faltings-Serre's method to prove that $p$-adic Galois representations are isomorphic.

Let $A$ be a square-free abelian variety defined over a number field $K$. Let $S$ be a density one set of prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ of $\mathcal{O}_K$. A famous theorem of Faltings says that the Frobenius polynomials $P_{A,\mathfrak{p}}(x)$ for $\mathfrak{p}\in S$ determine $A$ up to isogeny. We show that the prime factors of $|A(\mathbb{F}_{\mathfrak{p}})|=P_{A,\mathfrak{p}}(1)$ for $\mathfrak{p}\in S$ also determine $A$ up to isogeny over an explicit finite extension of $K$. The proof relies on understanding the $\ell$-adic monodromy groups which come from the $\ell$-adic Galois representa…
We first study hyperplane sections of some singular schemes over a field. We prove a Bertini theorem for the log smoothness of generic hyperplane sections of a large class of log smooth schemes over a log point. We also give an abstract generalization of the usual Bertini theorem for smoothness. We then apply this result to the study of hyperplane sections of regular schemes over a complete discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero with algebraically closed residue field. Lastly, give an exposition of a result of Faltings which states that one can compute the $p$-adic nearby cycles of smo…
Fix $K/\mathbf{Q}_p$ a finite extension and let $L/K$ be an infinite, strictly APF extension in the sense of Fontaine--Wintenberger. Let $X_K(L)$ denote its associated norm field. The goal of this paper is to associate to $L/K$, in a canonical and functorial way, a $p$-adically complete subring $\mathbf{A}_{L/K}^+ \subset \widetilde{\mathbf{A}}^+$ whose reduction modulo~$p$ is contained in the valuation ring of $X_K(L)$. When the extension $L/K$ is of a special form, which we call a $φ$-iterate extension, we prove that $X_K(L)$ is (at worst) a finite purely inseparable extension of the fractio…
