We present an algorithm to determine if the $L$-series associated to an automorphic representation and the one associated to an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field agree. By the work of Harris-Soudry-Taylor, Taylor and Berger-Harcos (cf. \cite{harris-taylor}, \cite{taylorII} and \cite{berger-harcos}) we can associate to an automorphic representation a family of compatible $p$-adic representations. Our algorithm is based on Faltings-Serre's method to prove that $p$-adic Galois representations are isomorphic.
We prove a non-minimal modularity lifting theorem for ordinary Galois representations over imaginary quadratic fields, conditional on a local-global compatibility conjecture for ordinary torsion classes.
In the present article, we extend previous results of the author and we show that when $K$ is any quadratic imaginary field of class number one, Fermat's equation $a^p+b^p+c^p=0$ does not have integral coprime solutions $a,b,c \in K \setminus \{ 0 \}$ such that $2 \mid abc$ and $p \geq 19$ is prime. The results are conjectural upon the veracity of a natural generalisation of Serre's modularity conjecture.
In this paper we study deformations of mod $p$ Galois representations $τ$ (over an imaginary quadratic field $F$) of dimension $2$ whose semi-simplification is the direct sum of two characters $τ_1$ and $τ_2$. As opposed to our previous work we do not impose any restrictions on the dimension of the crystalline Selmer group $H^1_Σ(F, {\rm Hom}(τ_2, τ_1)) \subset {\rm Ext}^1(τ_2, τ_1)$. We establish that there exists a basis $\mathcal{B}$ of $H^1_Σ(F, {\rm Hom}(τ_2, τ_1))$ arising from automorphic representations over $F$ (Theorem 8.1). Assuming among other things that the elements of $\mathcal{…
We study generalisations to totally real fields of methods originating with Wiles and Taylor-Wiles. In view of the results of Skinner-Wiles on elliptic curves with ordinary reduction, we focus here on the case of supersingular reduction. Combining these, we then obtain some partial results on the modularity problem for semistable elliptic curves, and end by giving some applications of our results, for example proving the modularity of all semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})$.
We quantify a recent theorem of Wiles on class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields by proving an estimate for the number of negative fundamental discriminants down to -X whose class numbers are indivisible by a given prime and whose imaginary quadratic fields satisfy any given set of local conditions. This estimate matches the best results in the direction of the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for the number of imaginary quadratic fields with class number indivisible by a given prime. This general result is applied to study rank 0 twists of certain elliptic curves.
Recent work of Freitas and Siksek showed that an asymptotic version of Fermat's Last Theorem holds for many totally real fields. Later this result was extended by Deconinck to generalized Fermat equations of the form $Ax^p +By^p +Cz^p = 0$, where A;B;C are odd integers belonging to a totally real field. Another extension was given by Sengun and Siksek. They showed that the Fermat equation holds asymptotically for imaginary quadratic number fields satisfying usual conjectures about modularity. In this work, combining their techniques we extend their results about the generalized Fermat equatio…
In this paper we discuss four methods of proving modularity of Calabi--Yau threefolds with $h^{12}=1$: existence of elliptic ruled surfaces inside (Hulek-Verrill), correspondence with a product of an elliptic curve and a K3 surface (Livné-Yui), correspondence with a (modular) rigid Calabi-Yau threefold, and existence of an involution splitting the fourdimensional representation into twodimensional subrepresentations. We apply these methods to prove modularity of 17 out of 18 double octic Calabi-Yau threefolds for which "numerical evidence of modularity" was found in the second Author's thesis.…
- Let K be a totally imaginary number field. Denote by G ur K (2) the Galois group of the maximal unramified pro-2 extension of K. By comparing cup-products in {é}tale cohomology of SpecO K and cohomology of uniform pro-2 groups, we obtain situations where G ur K (2) has no non-trivial uniform analytic quotient, proving some new special cases of the unramified Fontaine-Mazur conjecture. For example, in the family of imaginary quadratic fields K for which the 2-rank of the class group is equal to 5, we obtain that for at least 33.12% of such K, the group G ur K (2) has no non-trivial uniform an…
In this paper we first of all determine all possible genera of (odd and even) definite unimodular lattices over an imaginary-quadratic field. The main questions are whether the partial class numbers of lattices with given Steinitz class within one genus are equal for all occuring Steinitz classes and whether the partial masses of those partial genera are equal. We show that the answer to the first question in general is "no" by giving a counter example, while the answer to the second question is "yes" by proving a mass formula for partial masses. Finally, we determine a list of all single-clas…
We prove the modularity of minimally ramified ordinary residually reducible p-adic Galois representations of an imaginary quadratic field F under certain assumptions. We first exhibit conditions under which the residual representation is unique up to isomorphism. Then we prove the existence of deformations arising from cuspforms on GL_2(A_F) via the Galois representations constructed by Taylor et al. We establish a sufficient condition (in terms of the non-existence of certain field extensions which in many cases can be reduced to a condition on an L-value) for the universal deformation ring t…
We first prove the existence of minimally ramified p-adic lifts of 2-dimensional mod p representations, that are odd and irreducible, of the absolute Galois group of Q,in many cases. This is predicted by Serre's conjecture that such representations arise from newforms of optimal level and weight. Using these minimal lifts, and arguments using compatible systems, we prove some cases of Serre's conjectures in low levels and weights. For instance we prove that there are no irreducible (p,p) type group schemes over the rational integers. We prove that a Galois representation as above of Artin cond…
When Mike Hirschhorn showed us his lovely gem, that gives the simplest-to-date proof of Ramanujan's famous result that p(11n+6) is divisible by 11, we realized that his amazing method can be extended, and taught to a computer, and can prove even deeper identities. We would have done much more if not for the existence of Silviu Radu's powerful algorithm that handle any Ramanujan type congruence for any modular form (of a very general type), but it is still nice to know that in order to prove such simply stated results, that can be explained to a seven-year-old, one does not need the intimidatin…
Bianchi modular forms are automorphic forms over an imaginary quadratic field, associated to a Bianchi group. Even though modern studies of Bianchi modular forms go back to the mid 1960's, most of the fundamental problems surrounding their theory are still wide open. Only for certain types of Bianchi modular forms, which we will call non-genuine, it is possible at present to develop dimension formulas: They are (twists of) those forms which arise from elliptic cuspidal modular forms via the Langlands Base-Change procedure, or arise from a quadratic extension of the imaginary quadratic field vi…
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field. Modular forms for GL(2) over $K$ are known as Bianchi modular forms. Standard modularity conjectures assert that every weight 2 rational Bianchi newform has either an associated elliptic curve over $K$ or an associated abelian surface with quaternionic multiplication over $K$. We give explicit evidence in the way of examples to support this conjecture in the latter case. Furthermore, the quaternionic surfaces given correspond to genuine Bianchi newforms, which answers a question posed by J. Cremona as to whether this phenomenon can happen.
We describe a strategy to attack infinitely many Fermat-type equations of signature $(r,r,p)$, where $r \geq 7$ is a fixed prime and $p$ is a prime allowed to vary. We use a variant of the modular method over totally real subfields of $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_r)$. In particular, to a solution $(a,b,c)$ of $x^r + y^r =Cz^p$ we will attach several Frey curves $E=E_{(a,b)}$. We prove modularity of all the Frey curves and the exsitence of a constant constant $M_r$, depending only on $r$, such that for all $p>M_r$ the representations $\barρ_{E,p}$ are absolutely irreducible. Along the way, we also prove modul…
If E is an elliptic curve over Q and K is an imaginary quadratic field, there is an Iwasawa main conjecture predicting the behavior of the Selmer group of E over the anticyclotomic Z_p-extension of K. The main conjecture takes different forms depending on the sign of the functional equation of L(E/K,s). In the present work we combine ideas of Bertolini and Darmon with those of Mazur and Rubin to shown that the main conjecture, regardless of the sign of the functional equation, can be reduced to proving the nonvanishing of sufficiently many p-adic L-functions attached to a family of congruent m…
We show that the mod p Galois representations attached to a Q-curve E of degree d over an imaginary quadratic number field K are surjective for all p larger than some constant M_{K,d}, if E has potentially multiplicative reduction at any prime not dividing 6. The proof uses Mazur's formal immersion method, a result of Darmon and Merel on non-split modular curves, and an analytic argument showing that Jacobians of certain twisted modular curves admit quotients with Mordell-Weil rank 0. In combination with a previous theorem of the author and Skinner on modularity of Q-curves, the surjectivity r…
In 2016, in the work related to Galois representations, Greenberg conjectured the existence of multi-quadratic $p$-rational number fields of degree $2^{t}$ for any odd prime number $p$ and any integer $t \geq 1$. Using the criteria provided by him to check $p$-rationality for abelian number fields, certain infinite families of quadratic, biquadratic and triquadratic $p$-rational fields have been shown to exist in recent years. In this article, for any integer $k \geq 1$, we build upon the existing work and prove the existence of infinitely many prime numbers $p$ for which the imaginary quadrat…
Let E be an elliptic curve having complex multiplication by a given quadratic order of an imaginary quadratic field K. The field of definition of E is the ring class field Omega of the order. If the prime p splits completely in Omega, then we can reduce E modulo one the factors of p and get a curve Ep defined over GF(p). The trace of the Frobenius of Ep is known up to sign and we need a fast way to find this sign. For this, we propose to use the action of the Frobenius on torsion points of small order built with class invariants a la Weber, in a manner reminiscent of the Schoof-Elkies-Atkin al…
We study the crystalline universal deformation ring R (and its ideal of reducibility I) of a mod p Galois representation rho_0 of dimension n whose semisimplification is the direct sum of two absolutely irreducible mutually non-isomorphic constituents rho_1 and rho_2. Under some assumptions on Selmer groups associated with rho_1 and rho_2 we show that R/I is cyclic and often finite. Using ideas and results of (but somewhat different assumptions from) Bellaiche and Chenevier we prove that I is principal for essentially self-dual representations and deduce statements about the structure of R. Us…
This paper presents an algorithm for generating all imaginary and unusual discriminants up to a fixed degree bound that define a quadratic function field of positive 3-rank. Our method makes use of function field adaptations of a method due to Belabas for finding quadratic number fields of high 3-rank and of a refined function field version of a theorem due to Hasse. We provide numerical data for discriminant degree up to 11 over the finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{5}, \mathbb{F}_{7}, \mathbb{F}_{11}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{13}$. A special feature of our technique is that it produces quadratic function f…
