We first prove the existence of minimally ramified p-adic lifts of 2-dimensional mod p representations, that are odd and irreducible, of the absolute Galois group of Q,in many cases. This is predicted by Serre's conjecture that such representations arise from newforms of optimal level and weight.
Using these minimal lifts, and arguments using compatible systems, we prove some cases of Serre's conjectures in low levels and weights. For instance we prove that there are no irreducible (p,p) type group schemes over the rational integers. We prove that a Galois representation as above of Artin conductor 1 and Serre weight 12 arises from the Ramanujan Delta-function.
In the last part of the paper we present arguments that reduce Serre's conjecture on modularity of Galois representations as above to proving modularity lifting theorems of the type pioneered by Wiles. While these modularity lifting results are not known as yet they might be relatively accessible because of the basic method of Wiles and Taylor-Wiles and recent developments in the p-adic Langlands programmeinitiated by Breuil.
We give an explicit formulation of the weight part of Serre's conjecture for GL_2 using Kummer theory. This avoids any reference to p-adic Hodge theory. The key inputs are a description of the reduction modulo p of crystalline extensions in terms of certain "G_K-Artin-Scheier cocycles" and a result of Abrashkin which describes these cocycles in terms of Kummer theory. An alternative explicit formulation in terms of local class field theory was previously given by Dembele-Diamond-Roberts in the unramified case and by the second author in general. We show that the description of Dembele-Diamond-…
The purpose of this short note is to present a simplified proof of Serre's modularity conjecture using the strong modularity lifting results currently available. This second version includes extra details on definitions and proofs than the previous one.
We prove that a selfdual $GL_3$-Galois representation constructed by van Geemen and Top is isomorphic to a quadratic twist of the symmetric square of the Tate module of an elliptic curve. This is an application of our refinement of the Faltings-Serre method to $3$-dimensional Galois representations with the ground field not equal to $\mathbb{Q}$. The proof makes use of the Faltings-Serre method, $\ell$-adic Lie algebra, and Burnside groups.
We prove some new cases of weight part of Serre's conjectures for mod $p$ Galois representations associated to automorphic representations on unitary groups $U(d)$. The approach is a generalization of the work of Gee-Liu-Savitt, namely, we study reductions of certain crystalline representations, as well as crystalline lifts of these reductions.
Given a totally real number field $F$ and a mod $p$ Galois representation $ρ\colon G_F\to \mathrm{GL}_2(\bar{\mathbf{F}}_p)$, we propose an explicit definition of the set of Serre weights $W(ρ)$ attached to $ρ$. We prove that our explicit definition is equivalent to previous definitions available in the literature. As a consequence we obtain an explicit Serre's modularity conjecture for Hilbert modular forms over totally real number fields. Our work generalises previous work of Dembélé--Diamond--Roberts and Calegari--Emerton--Gee--Mavrides which together give explicit and equivalent sets of we…
We prove the weight elimination direction of the Serre weight conjectures as formulated by Herzig for forms of $U(n)$ which are compact at infinity and split at places dividing $p$ in generic situations. That is, we show that all modular weights for a mod $p$ Galois representation are contained in the set predicted by Herzig. Under some additional hypotheses, we also show modularity of all the "obvious" weights.
In the present article, we extend previous results of the author and we show that when $K$ is any quadratic imaginary field of class number one, Fermat's equation $a^p+b^p+c^p=0$ does not have integral coprime solutions $a,b,c \in K \setminus \{ 0 \}$ such that $2 \mid abc$ and $p \geq 19$ is prime. The results are conjectural upon the veracity of a natural generalisation of Serre's modularity conjecture.
We prove a version of the weight part of Serre's conjecture for mod $p$ Galois representations attached to automorphic forms on rank 2 unitary groups which are non-split at $p$. More precisely, let $F/F^+$ denote a CM extension of a totally real field such that every place of $F^+$ above $p$ is unramified and inert in $F$, and let $\overline{r}: \textrm{Gal}(\overline{F^+}/F^+) \longrightarrow {}^C\mathbf{U}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ be a Galois parameter valued in the $C$-group of a rank 2 unitary group attached to $F/F^+$. We assume that $\overline{r}$ is semisimple and sufficiently generi…
In this paper, we introduce a condition $\mathrm{(F}_m'\mathrm{)}$ on a field $K$, for a positive integer $m$, that generalizes Serre's condition (F) and which still implies the finiteness of the Galois cohomology of finite Galois modules annihilated by $m$ and algebraic $K$-tori that split over an extension of degree dividing $m$, as well as certain groups of étale and unramified cohomology. Various examples of fields satisfying $\mathrm{(F}_m'\mathrm{)}$, including those that do not satisfy (F), are given.
Serre's strong conjecture, now a theorem of Khare and Wintenberger, states that every two-dimensional continuous, odd, irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation $ρ$ arises from a modular form of a specific minimal weight $k(ρ)$, level $N(ρ)$ and character $ε(ρ)$. In this short paper we show that the minimal weight $k(ρ)$ is equal to a notion of minimal weight inspired by the recipe for weights introduced by Buzzard, Diamond and Jarvis. Moreover, using the Breuil-Mézard conjecture we show that both weight recipes are equal to the smallest $k \geq 2$ such that $ρ$ has a crystalline lift of Hodge…
Let $p>2$ be a prime. Let $K$ be a tamely ramified finite extension over $\mathbb Q_p$ with ramification index $e$, and let $G_K$ be the Galois group. We study Kisin modules attached to crystalline representations of $G_K$ whose labeled Hodge-Tate weights are relatively small (a sort of "$er\le p$" condition where $r$ is the maximal Hodge-Tate weight). In particular, we show that these Kisin modules admit "adapted bases". We then apply these results in the special case $e=2$ to study reductions and liftings of certain crystalline representations. As a consequence, we establish some new cases o…
If $f(z)$ is a modular form of weight $k$, then the differential operator $\vartheta_k$ defined by $\vartheta_k(f) = \frac{1}{2πi} \frac{d}{dz}f(z) - \frac{k}{12} E_2(z) f(z)$ (known as the Ramanujan-Serre derivative map) is a modular form of weight $k+2$. In this paper, we obtain a simple extension of this map and use it to get a general method to derive certain convolution sums of the divisor functions (using the theory of modular forms). Explicit expressions are given for four types of convolution sums and we provide many examples for all these types of sums.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $\mathrm{End}_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}(E)=\mathbb{Z}$ and which admits a non-trivial cyclic $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny. We prove that, for $p>37$, the residual mod $p$ Galois representation $\barρ_{E,p}:G_{\mathbb{Q}}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is surjective.
This is a survey article on developments in modularity since the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, with an emphasis on the historical development of the subject rather than any technical details.
We explain in this letter how using a recent Modularity Lifting Theorem proved by Lue Pan the proofs of Serre's Modularity Conjecture over $\mathbb{Q}$ given by Khare-Wintenberger and the author can be greatly simplified. The main difference with the previous proofs is that neither the process of "weight reduction" developed by Khare in his proof of the level 1 case nor the alternative method of "weight reduction via Galois conjugation" developed by the author are required: weight reduction can now be obtained just with two applications of Pan's result, together with a Lemma that guarantees th…
Let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb Q\_p$ and $\barρ$ be an absolutely irreducible mod~$p$ $2$-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $t$ be a tame inertial type of $F$. We conjecture that the deformation space parametrizing the potentially Barsotti--Tate liftings of $\barρ$ having type $t$ depends only on the Kisin variety attached to the situation, enriched with its canonical embedding into $(\mathbb P^1)^f$ and its shape stratification. We give evidences towards this conjecture by proving that the Kisin variety determines the cardinality of the …
Let p be a prime and F a totally real field in which p is unramified. We consider mod p Hilbert modular forms for F, defined as sections of automorphic line bundles on Hilbert modular varieties of level prime to p in characteristic p. For a mod p Hilbert modular Hecke eigenform of arbitrary weight (without parity hypotheses), we associate a two-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of F, and we give a conjectural description of the set of weights of all eigenforms from which it arises. This conjecture can be viewed as a "geometric" variant of the "algebraic" Serre weight conj…
In the Lubin-Tate setting we study pairings for analytic $(φ_L,Γ_L)$-modules and prove an abstract reciprocity law which then implies a relation between the analogue of Perrin-Riou's Big Exponential map as developed by Berger and Fourquaux and a $p$-adic regulator map whose construction relies on the theory of Kisin-Ren modules generalising the concept of Wach modules to the Lubin-Tate situation.
Let $s(a,b)$ denote the classical Dedekind sum and $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$. Recently, Du and Zhang proved the following reciprocity formula. If $a$ and $b$ are odd natural numbers, $(a,b)=1$, then $$ S(2a^*,b)+S(2b^*,a)=\frac{a^2+b^2+4}{2ab}-3, $$ where $aa^*\equiv 1\mod b$ and $bb^* \equiv 1 \mod a$. In this paper we show that this formula is a special case of a series of similar reciprocity formulas. Whereas Du and Zhang worked with the connection of Dedekind sums and values of $L$-series, our main tool is the three-term relation for Dedekind sums.
On the level p weight 2 case of Serre's conjecture
本文仅作了一点小小的贡献:修正了Khare的预印本“On Serre's modularity conceptual for 2-dimensional mod p representations of G_Q unramified outside p”中关于Serre猜想的素数级权为2情形的证明中的一些不准确之处。
We prove in generic situations that the lattice in a tame type induced by the completed cohomology of a $U(3)$-arithmetic manifold is purely local, i.e., only depends on the Galois representation at places above $p$. This is a generalization to $\mathrm{GL}_3$ of the lattice conjecture of Breuil. In the process, we also prove the geometric Breuil-Mézard conjecture for (tamely) potentially crystalline deformation rings with Hodge-Tate weights $(0,1,2)$ as well as the Serre weight conjectures over an unramified field extending our previous results. We also prove results in modular representation…
We survey some recent progress on generalizations of conjectures of Serre concerning the cohomology of arithmetic groups, focusing primarily on the "weight" aspect. This is intimately related to (generalizations of) a conjecture of Breuil and Mézard relating the geometry of potentially semistable deformation rings to modular representation theory. Recently, B. Levin, S. Morra, and the authors established these conjectures in tame generic contexts by constructing projective varieties (local models) in mixed characteristic whose singularities model, in generic cases, those of tamely potentially …
We study multilinear symbols on fields taking values in reciprocity sheaves. We prove that any such symbol satisfying natural axioms automatically has Steinberg-type relations, which is a manifestation of the geometry of modulus pairs lying behind.
