The main result of the paper is a reciprocity law which proves that compatible systems of semisimple, abelian mod $p$ representations (of arbitrary dimension) of absolute Galois groups of number fields, arise from Hecke characters. In the last section of the paper analogs for Galois groups of function fields of these results are explored, and a question is raised whose answer will require developments in transcendence theory in characteristic $p$.
This is an introduction to noncommutative local reciprocity maps for totally ramified Galois extensions with arithmetically profinite group. These maps in general are not homomorphisms but Galois cycles; a description of their image and kernel is included.
We use non-abelian fundamental groups to define a sequence of higher reciprocity maps on the adelic points of a variety over a number field satisfying certain conditions in Galois cohomology. The non-abelian reciprocity law then states that the global points are contained in the kernel of all the reciprocity maps.
In this paper, we determine mod $2$ Galois representations $\barρ_{ψ,2}:G_K:={\rm Gal}(\bar{K}/K)\longrightarrow {\rm GSp}_4(\mathbb{F}_2)$ associated to the mirror motives of rank 4 with pure weight 3 coming from the Dwork quintic family $$X^5_0+X^5_1+X^5_2+X^5_3+X^5_4-5ψX_0X_1X_2X_3X_4=0,\ ψ\in K$$ defined over a number field $K$ under the irreducibility condition of the quintic trinomial $f_ψ$ below. Applying this result, when $K=F$ is a totally real field, for some at most qaudratic totally real extension $M/F$, we prove that $\barρ_{ψ,2}|_{G_M}$ is associated to a Hilbert-Siegel modular H…
We first prove the existence of minimally ramified p-adic lifts of 2-dimensional mod p representations, that are odd and irreducible, of the absolute Galois group of Q,in many cases. This is predicted by Serre's conjecture that such representations arise from newforms of optimal level and weight. Using these minimal lifts, and arguments using compatible systems, we prove some cases of Serre's conjectures in low levels and weights. For instance we prove that there are no irreducible (p,p) type group schemes over the rational integers. We prove that a Galois representation as above of Artin cond…
Up to isomorphism over C, every simple principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 3 is the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve of genus 3. Furthermore, this curve is either a hyperelliptic curve or a plane quartic. Given a sextic CM field K, we show that if there exists a hyperelliptic Jacobian with CM by K, then all principally polarized abelian varieties that are Galois conjugated to it are hyperelliptic. Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we give an algorithm for computing approximations of the invariants of the initial curve, as well as their Galois conjugates. This allows us ton d…
We prove a reciprocity law for one-dimensional compatible systems of mod p representations of absolute Galois groups of number fields. We prove that these arise from Hecke characters, and in particular recover by purely algebraic means the classical result (that is usually proven using deep results of Waldschmidt in transcendental number theory) that one-dimensional compatible p-adic systems arise from Hecke characters.
In recent papers, Fesenko has defined the non-abelian local reciprocity map for every totally-ramified arithmetically profinite ($APF$) Galois extension of a given local field $K$ by extending the works of Hazewinkel and Neukirch-Iwasawa. The theory of Fesenko extends the previous non-abelian generalizations of local class field theory given by Koch-de Shalit and by A. Gurevich. In this paper, which is research-expository in nature, we give a detailed account of Fesenko's work including all the skipped proofs.
Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we calculate the Galois action on the special values of theta functions associated to primitive Dirichlet characters of odd conductor, normalised by the Dedekind eta function, at the point i. As a consequence, we prove some experimental results of Cohen and Zagier and we deduce a partial result on the non-vanishing of these special theta values with prime conductor.
We reinterpret Kim's non-abelian reciprocity maps for algebraic varieties as obstruction towers of mapping spaces of etale homotopy types, removing technical hypotheses such as global basepoints and cohomological constraints. We then extend the theory by considering alternative natural series of extensions, one of which gives an obstruction tower whose first stage is the Brauer--Manin obstruction, allowing us to determine when Kim's maps recover the Brauer-Manin locus. A tower based on relative completions yields non-trivial reciprocity maps even for Shimura varieties; for the stacky modular c…
For an abelian number field K containing a primitive p-th root of unity (p an odd prime) and satisfying certain technical conditions, we parametrize the Z_p[G(K/Q)]-annihilators of the "minus" part A_K^- of the p-class group by means of modules of Jacobi sums. Using a reflection theorem and Bloch-Kato's reciprocity law, we then determine the Fitting ideal of the "plus" part A_K^+ in terms of "twisted" Gauss sums.
We study a dynamical system induced by the Artin reciprocity map for a global field. We translate the conjugacy of such dynamical systems into various arithmetical properties that are equivalent to field isomorphism, relating it to anabelian geometry.
In this paper, which is the natural continuation and generalization of Fesenko's non-abelian reciprocity map, we extend the theory of Fesenko to infinite $APF$-Galois extensions $L$ over a local field $K$, with finite residue-class field $κ_K$ of $q=p^f$ elements, satisfying $\pmbμ_p(K^{sep})\subset K$ and $K\subset L\subset K_{ϕ^d}$ where the residue-class degree $[κ_L:κ_K]=d$. More precisely, for such extensions $L/K$, fixing a Lubin-Tate splitting $ϕ$ over $K$, we construct a 1-cocycle, \pmbΦ_{L/K}^{(ϕ)}:\text{Gal}(L/K)\to K^\times/N_{L_0/K}L_0^\times\times U_{\widetilde{\mathbb X}(L/K)}^\d…
Koya's and author's approach to the higher local reciprocity map as a generalization of the classical class formations approach to the level of complexes of Galois modules.
We prove a strengthening of the "reciprocity conjecture" of Khare and Wintenberger. The input to the original conjecture is an odd prime p, a CM number field F containing the pth roots of unity, and a pair of primes of the maximal totally real subfield E of F that are inert in the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of E. In analogy to a statement about generalized Jacobians of curves, the conjecture asserts the equality of two procyclic subgroups of the Galois group G of the maximal p-ramified abelian pro-p extension of E. The first is the intersection of the subgroup of G fixing the cyclotomic Z_p-exte…
In this paper, we study the Iwasawa theory of a motive whose Hodge-Tate weights are $0$ or $1$ (thence in practice, of a motive associated to an abelian variety) at a non-ordinary prime, over the cyclotomic tower of a number field that is either totally real or CM. In particular, under certain technical assumptions, we construct Sprung-type Coleman maps on the local Iwasawa cohomology groups and use them to define integral $p$-adic $L$-functions and (one unconditionally and other conjecturally) cotorsion Selmer groups. This allows us to reformulate Perrin-Riou's main conjecture in terms of the…
In the present paper, we study the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the (strict) Selmer groups over $\mathbb{Q}_{\infty}$, the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, of the $p$-adic weight one cusp forms $f$, obtained via the $p$-stabilization of weight one Eisenstein series, under the assumption that a certain Eisenstein component of the $p$-ordinary universal cuspidal Hecke algebra is Gorenstein. As an application, we compute the Iwasawa invariants of ordinary modular forms of weight $k\geq 2$ with the same residual Galois representations as the one of $f$, which in our setting, is r…
We compare the conjecture of Buzzard-Gee on the association of Galois representations to C-algebraic automorphic representations with the conjectural description of the cohomology of Shimura varieties due to Kottwitz, and the reciprocity law at infinity due to Arthur. This is done by extending Langlands's representation of the L-group associated with a Shimura datum to a representation of the C-group of Buzzard-Gee. The approach offers an explanation of the explicit Tate twist appearing in Kottwitz's description.
We study multilinear symbols on fields taking values in reciprocity sheaves. We prove that any such symbol satisfying natural axioms automatically has Steinberg-type relations, which is a manifestation of the geometry of modulus pairs lying behind.
This paper proves a reciprocity formula for modular inverses for non-zero integers and demonstrates some applications of the reciprocity formula in calculating or verifying some modular inverses of specific forms, including the modular inverse of a Gaussian integer modulo another Gaussian integer.
We produce a new proof of the reciprocity law for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet L-functions that was recently proved by Conrey. Our method is to analyze certain two-variable sums where the variables satisfy a linear congruence. We show that these sums satisfy an elegant reciprocity formula. In the case that the modulus is prime, these sums are closely related to the twisted second moment, and the reciprocity formula for these sums implies Conrey's reciprocity formula. We also extend the range of uniformity of Conrey's formula.
We introduce a new ideal {\mathfrak D} of the p-adic Galois group-ring associated to a real abelian field and a related ideal {\mathfrak J} for imaginary abelian fields. Both result from an equivariant, Kummer-type pairing applied to Stark units in a Z_p-tower of abelian fields and {\mathfrak J} is linked by explicit reciprocity to a third ideal {\mathfrak S} studied more generally in a previous work. This leads to a new and unifying framework for the Iwasawa Theory of such fields including a real analogue of Stickelberger's Theorem, links with certain Fitting ideals and Λ-torsion submodules, …
In the Lubin-Tate setting we study pairings for analytic $(φ_L,Γ_L)$-modules and prove an abstract reciprocity law which then implies a relation between the analogue of Perrin-Riou's Big Exponential map as developed by Berger and Fourquaux and a $p$-adic regulator map whose construction relies on the theory of Kisin-Ren modules generalising the concept of Wach modules to the Lubin-Tate situation.
Let $s(a,b)$ denote the classical Dedekind sum and $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$. Recently, Du and Zhang proved the following reciprocity formula. If $a$ and $b$ are odd natural numbers, $(a,b)=1$, then $$ S(2a^*,b)+S(2b^*,a)=\frac{a^2+b^2+4}{2ab}-3, $$ where $aa^*\equiv 1\mod b$ and $bb^* \equiv 1 \mod a$. In this paper we show that this formula is a special case of a series of similar reciprocity formulas. Whereas Du and Zhang worked with the connection of Dedekind sums and values of $L$-series, our main tool is the three-term relation for Dedekind sums.
We compare two maps that arise in study of the cohomology of number fields with ramification restricted to a finite set S of primes. One of these maps, which we call an S-reciprocity map, interpolates the values of cup products in S-ramified cohomology. In the case of p-ramified cohomology of the pth cyclotomic field for an odd prime p, we use this to exhibit an intriguing relationship between particular values of the cup product on cyclotomic p-units. We then consider higher analogues of the S-reciprocity map and relate their cokernels to the graded quotients in augmentation filtrations of Iw…
It is known that two number fields with the same Dedekind zeta function are not necessarily isomorphic. The zeta function of a number field can be interpreted as the partition function of an associated quantum statistical mechanical system, which is a C*-algebra with a one parameter group of automorphisms, built from Artin reciprocity. In the first part of this paper, we prove that isomorphism of number fields is the same as isomorphism of these associated systems. Considering the systems as noncommutative analogues of topological spaces, this result can be seen as another version of Grothendi…
We investigate the reciprocity law, studied by Conrey~\cite{Con07} and Young~\cite{You11a}, for the second moment of Dirichlet L-functions twisted by $χ(a)$ modulo a prime $q$. We show that the error term in this reciprocity law can be extended to a continuous function of $a/q$ with respect to the real topology. Furthermore, we extend this reciprocity result, proving an exact formula involving also shifted moments. We also give an expression for the twisted second moment involving the coefficients of the continued fraction expansion of $a/q$, and, consequently, we improve upon a classical resu…
Let $K$ be an unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ and $μ_{2^n}$ the group of $2^n$-th root of unity for a fixed integer $n\geqslant 2$. In this paper, we give an explicit formula for the $μ_{2^n}$-valued Hilbert symbol over $K_n := K(μ_{2^n})$ using the theory of $(φ, Γ)$-modules.

In this paper, we prove explicit reciprocity laws for a class of formal Drinfeld modules having stable reduction of height one, in the spirit of those existing in characteristic zero (cf. the work of Wiles). We begin by defining the Kummer pairing in the language of formal Drinfeld modules defined over local fields of positive characteristic. We then prove explicit formulas for this pairing in terms of the logarithm of the formal Drinfeld module, a certain Coleman power series, torsion points and the trace. Our results extend the explicit formulas already proved by Anglès for Carlitz modules, …
We give new proofs of two basic results in number theory: The law of quadratic reciprocity and the sign of the Gauss sum. We show that these results are encoded in the relation between the discrete Fourier transform and the action of the Weyl element in the Weil representation modulo p,q and pq.
Berry and Klein (J. Mod. Opt. (1997) 43 2139-2164) showed that the Talbot effects in classical optics are naturally explained by Gauss sums studied in number theory. Their result was based on Helmholtz equation. In this article, we explain the effect based on Fresnel integral also by Gauss sums. These two explanations are shown to agree with by the reciprocity law of Gauss sums. The relation between this agreement and the wave-particle complementarity is also discussed.
