In this paper, we show that an odd Galois representation rhobar: Gal(Qbar/Q) --> GL_2(F_9) satisfying certain local conditions at 3 and 5 is modular. Our main tool is an idea of Taylor, which reduces the problem to that of exhibiting points on a Hilbert modular surface which are defined over a solvable extension of Q, and which satisfy certain reduction properties. As a corollary, we show that Hilbert-Blumenthal abelian surfaces over Q with good ordinary reduction at 3 and 5 are modular.
In this article, we give a reformulation of a result from Howe, Leprevost and Poonen on a three dimensional family of abelian threefolds. We also link their result to a conjecture of Serre on a precise form of Torelli theorem for genus 3 curves.
We formulate for function fields an analog of Serre's conjecture on the modularity of 2-dimensional irreducible mod l representations of the absolute Galois group of Q: our analog is not restricted to 2-dimensional represntations. While the original conjecture of Serre is wide open at the moment, in this paper we prove the function field analog of Serre's conjecture only assuming largeness of image of the representation and some assumptions on the ramification of the representation (for example if the mod l representation is unramified and has full image, l is odd and the dimension and charact…
Let $k$ be a base field and $G$ be an algebraic group over $k$. J.-P. Serre defined $G$ to be special if every $G$-torsor $T \to X$ is locally trivial in the Zariski topology for every reduced algebraic variety $X$ defined over $k$. In recent papers an a priori weaker condition is used: $G$ is called special if every $G$-torsor $T \to Spec(K)$ is split for every field $K$ containing $k$. We show that these two definitions are equivalent. We also generalize this fact and propose a strengthened version of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture based on the notion of essential dimension.
We make explicit Serre's generalization of the Sato-Tate conjecture for motives, by expressing the construction in terms of fiber functors from the motivic category of absolute Hodge cycles into a suitable category of Hodge structures of odd weight. This extends the case of abelian varietes, which we treated in a previous paper. That description was used by Fite--Kedlaya--Rotger--Sutherland to classify Sato-Tate groups of abelian surfaces; the present description is used by Fite--Kedlaya--Sutherland to make a similar classification for certain motives of weight 3. We also give conditions under…
This paper concerns the Algebraic Sato--Tate and Sato--Tate conjectures, based on Serre's original motivic formulation, with an eye towards explicit computations of Sato--Tate groups. We build on the algebraic framework for the Sato--Tate conjecture introduced in a previous paper, which used Deligne's motivic category for absolute Hodge cycles and was restricted to motives of odd weight. Here, we allow general weight and some other motivic categories, notably André's motivic category of motivated cycles; moreover, some results are also new in the odd weight case. The paper consists of two part…
We prove existence of conjugate Galois representations, and we use it to derive a simple method of weight reduction. As a consequence, an alternative proof of the level 1 case of Serre's conjecture follows.
In this appendix, we observe that our March preprint on Serre's conjecture was indeed correct: the only "missing argument" follows automatically from a result of Bockle and Ramakrishna. Thus, we get a proof of the level 1 weight 2 case of Serre's conjecture (a result that has been also proved independently by Khare and Wintenberger).
The purpose of this short note is to present a simplified proof of Serre's modularity conjecture using the strong modularity lifting results currently available. This second version includes extra details on definitions and proofs than the previous one.
We prove some new cases of weight part of Serre's conjectures for mod $p$ Galois representations associated to automorphic representations on unitary groups $U(d)$. The approach is a generalization of the work of Gee-Liu-Savitt, namely, we study reductions of certain crystalline representations, as well as crystalline lifts of these reductions.
We prove some new cases of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture for classical groups. This is based on a new construction of the Gersten-Witt complex for Witt groups of Azumaya algebras with involution on regular semilocal rings, with explicit second residue maps; the complex is shown to be exact when the ring is of dimension $\le 2$ (or $\le 4$, with additional hypotheses on the algebra with involution). Note that we do not assume that the ring contains a field.
We study an analog of Serre's conjecture over imaginary quadratic fields. In particular, we ask whether the weight recipe of Buzzard, Diamond and Jarvis will hold in this setting. Using a program written by the author, we provide computational evidence that this is in fact the case. In order to justify the method used in the program, we prove that a modular symbols method will work for arbitrary weights over imaginary quadratic fields.
Let p > 2 be prime. We use purely local methods to determine the possible reductions of certain two-dimensional crystalline representations, which we call "pseudo-Barsotti-Tate representations", over arbitrary finite extensions of the p-adics. As a consequence, we establish (under the usual Taylor-Wiles hypothesis) the weight part of Serre's conjecture for GL(2) over arbitrary totally real fields.
These are the lecture notes from a five-hour mini-course given at the Winter School on Galois Theory held at the University of Luxembourg in February 2012. Their aim is to give an overview of Serre's modularity conjecture and of its proof by Khare, Wintenberger, and Kisin, as well as of the results of other mathematicians that played an important role in the proof. Along the way we remark on some recent (as of 2012) work concerning generalizations of the conjecture.
Let p>2 be prime. We complete the proof of the weight part of Serre's conjecture for rank two unitary groups for mod p representations in the totally ramified case, by proving that any weight which occurs is a predicted weight. Our methods are a mixture of local and global techniques, and in the course of the proof we establish some purely local results on crystalline extension classes.
The conjecture of Serre referred in the title is the one about modularity of odd Galois representations into GL(2,F) where F is a finite field of characteristic p. We present an analogous conjecture where GL(2) is replaced by GL(n). We explain the analogue of "oddness." We then present some theoretical and experimental evidence for the conjecture, primarily when n = 3. Our conjecture does not require the Galois representation to be irreducible. Our most interesting examples involve the sum of an irreducible even 2-dimensional representation and a 1-dimensional representation.
We prove the weight part of Serre's conjecture in generic situations for forms of $U(3)$ which are compact at infinity and split at places dividing $p$ as conjectured by Herzig. We also prove automorphy lifting theorems in dimension three. The key input is an explicit description of tamely potentially crystalline deformation rings with Hodge-Tate weights $(2,1,0)$ for $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ unramified combined with patching techniques. Our results show that the (geometric) Breuil-Mézard conjectures hold for these deformation rings.
We formulate a number of related generalisations of the weight part of Serre's conjecture to the case of GL(n) over an arbitrary number field, motivated by the formalism of the Breuil-Mézard conjecture. We give evidence for these conjectures, and discuss their relationship to previous work. We generalise one of these conjectures to the case of connected reductive groups which are unramified over Q_p, and we also generalise the second author's previous conjecture for GL(n)/Q to this setting, and show that the two conjectures are generically in agreement.
In this article we give a proof of Serre's conjecture for the case of odd level and arbitrary weight. Our proof does not depend on any generalization of Kisin's modularity lifting results to characteristic 2 (moreover, we will not consider at all characteristic 2 representations at any step of our proof). The key tool in the proof is a very general modularity lifting result of Kisin, which is combined with the methods and results of previous articles on Serre's conjecture by Khare, Wintenberger, and the author, and modularity results of Schoof for semistable abelian varieties of small conducto…
We prove the weight elimination direction of the Serre weight conjectures as formulated by Herzig for forms of $U(n)$ which are compact at infinity and split at places dividing $p$ in generic situations. That is, we show that all modular weights for a mod $p$ Galois representation are contained in the set predicted by Herzig. Under some additional hypotheses, we also show modularity of all the "obvious" weights.
We formulate a Serre-type conjecture for n-dimensional Galois representations that are tamely ramified at p. The weights are predicted using a representation-theoretic recipe. For n = 3 some of these weights were not predicted by the previous conjecture of Ash, Doud, Pollack, and Sinnott. Computational evidence for these extra weights is provided by calculations of Doud and Pollack. We obtain theoretical evidence for n = 4 using automorphic inductions of Hecke characters.
We first prove the existence of minimally ramified p-adic lifts of 2-dimensional mod p representations, that are odd and irreducible, of the absolute Galois group of Q,in many cases. This is predicted by Serre's conjecture that such representations arise from newforms of optimal level and weight. Using these minimal lifts, and arguments using compatible systems, we prove some cases of Serre's conjectures in low levels and weights. For instance we prove that there are no irreducible (p,p) type group schemes over the rational integers. We prove that a Galois representation as above of Artin cond…
In the present article, we extend previous results of the author and we show that when $K$ is any quadratic imaginary field of class number one, Fermat's equation $a^p+b^p+c^p=0$ does not have integral coprime solutions $a,b,c \in K \setminus \{ 0 \}$ such that $2 \mid abc$ and $p \geq 19$ is prime. The results are conjectural upon the veracity of a natural generalisation of Serre's modularity conjecture.
Serre's strong conjecture, now a theorem of Khare and Wintenberger, states that every two-dimensional continuous, odd, irreducible mod $p$ Galois representation $ρ$ arises from a modular form of a specific minimal weight $k(ρ)$, level $N(ρ)$ and character $ε(ρ)$. In this short paper we show that the minimal weight $k(ρ)$ is equal to a notion of minimal weight inspired by the recipe for weights introduced by Buzzard, Diamond and Jarvis. Moreover, using the Breuil-Mézard conjecture we show that both weight recipes are equal to the smallest $k \geq 2$ such that $ρ$ has a crystalline lift of Hodge…
In 1987 Serre conjectured that any mod l ("ell", not "1") two-dimensional irreducible odd representation of the absolute Galois group of the rationals came from a modular form in a precise way. We present a generalisation of this conjecture to 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field where l is unramified. The hard work is in formulating an analogue of the "weight" part of Serre's conjecture. Serre furthermore asked whether his conjecture could be rephrased in terms of a "mod l Langlands philosophy". Using ideas of Emerton and Vigneras, we formulate a …
Let K be a local field of mixte characteristics. We assume that the residue field is perfect. Let X\_K be a proper smooth scheme over K admitting an integer model X which is proper and semi-stable. In this article, we prove a period isomorphism linking the étale cohomology of X\_Kbar with coefficients in Z/p^n and the log-crystalline cohomology of the special fiber of X. Nevertheless, we have a restriction on the absolute ramification of K and the degree of the cohomologies. We apply the theory to deduce a complete proof of the Serre conjecture on the tame inertia.
We present a Serre-type conjecture on the modularity of four-dimensional symplectic mod p Galois representations. We assume that the Galois representation is irreducible and odd (in the symplectic sense). The modularity condition is formulated using the etale and the algebraic de Rham cohomology of Siegel modular varieties of level prime to p. We concentrate on the case when the Galois representation is ordinary at p and we give a corresponding list of Serre weights. When the representation is moreover tamely ramified at p, we conjecture that all weights of this list are modular, otherwise we …
We survey some recent progress on generalizations of conjectures of Serre concerning the cohomology of arithmetic groups, focusing primarily on the "weight" aspect. This is intimately related to (generalizations of) a conjecture of Breuil and Mézard relating the geometry of potentially semistable deformation rings to modular representation theory. Recently, B. Levin, S. Morra, and the authors established these conjectures in tame generic contexts by constructing projective varieties (local models) in mixed characteristic whose singularities model, in generic cases, those of tamely potentially …
Let F be a totally real field and p an odd prime. If r is a continuous, semisimple, totally odd mod p representation of the absolute Galois group of F which is tamely ramified at all places of F dividing p, then we formulate a conjecture specifying the weights for which r is modular. This extends the conjecture of Diamond, Buzzard, and Jarvis, which supposed that p was unramified in F. We also prove a theorem towards the conjecture and provide some computational evidence.
Let p be a prime and F a totally real field in which p is unramified. We consider mod p Hilbert modular forms for F, defined as sections of automorphic line bundles on Hilbert modular varieties of level prime to p in characteristic p. For a mod p Hilbert modular Hecke eigenform of arbitrary weight (without parity hypotheses), we associate a two-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of F, and we give a conjectural description of the set of weights of all eigenforms from which it arises. This conjecture can be viewed as a "geometric" variant of the "algebraic" Serre weight conj…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $\mathrm{End}_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}(E)=\mathbb{Z}$ and which admits a non-trivial cyclic $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny. We prove that, for $p>37$, the residual mod $p$ Galois representation $\barρ_{E,p}:G_{\mathbb{Q}}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is surjective.
In this survey paper we present recent results obtained by Khare, Wintenberger and the author that have led to a proof of Serre's conjecture, such as existence of compatible families, modular upper bounds for universal deformation rings and existence of minimal lifts, prime switching and modularity propagation, weight reduction (via existence of conjugates) and (iterated) killing ramification. The main tools used in the proof of these results are modularity lifting theorems a la Wiles and a result of potential modularity due to R. Taylor.
We prove that for forms of U(3) which are compact at infinity and split at places dividing a prime p, in generic situations the Serre weights of a mod p modular Galois representation which is irreducible when restricted to each decomposition group above p are exactly those previously predicted by the third author. We do this by combining explicit computations in p-adic Hodge theory, based on a formalism of strongly divisible modules and Breuil modules with descent data which we develop in the paper, with a technique that we call "weight cycling".
We study the weight part of (a generalisation of) Serre's conjecture for mod l Galois representations associated to automorphic representations on rank two unitary groups for odd primes l. We propose a conjectural set of Serre weights, agreeing with all conjectures in the literature, and under a mild assumption on the image of the mod l Galois representation we are able to show that any modular representation is modular of each conjectured weight. We make no assumptions on the ramification or inertial degrees of l. Our main innovation is to make use of the lifting techniques introduced in our …
We prove a version of the weight part of Serre's conjecture for mod $p$ Galois representations attached to automorphic forms on rank 2 unitary groups which are non-split at $p$. More precisely, let $F/F^+$ denote a CM extension of a totally real field such that every place of $F^+$ above $p$ is unramified and inert in $F$, and let $\overline{r}: \textrm{Gal}(\overline{F^+}/F^+) \longrightarrow {}^C\mathbf{U}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ be a Galois parameter valued in the $C$-group of a rank 2 unitary group attached to $F/F^+$. We assume that $\overline{r}$ is semisimple and sufficiently generi…
This brief note only contains a modest contribution: we just fix some inaccuracies in the proof of the prime level weight 2 case of Serre's conjecture given in Khare's preprint "On Serre's modularity conjecture for 2-dimensional mod p representations of G_Q unramified outside p", for the case of trivial character. More precisely, the modularity lifting result needed at a crucial step is the one for the case of a deformation corresponding to a $p$-adic semistable (in the sense of Fontaine) Galois representation attached to a semistable abelian variety, but in Khare's preprint it is applied a le…
We prove in generic situations that the lattice in a tame type induced by the completed cohomology of a $U(3)$-arithmetic manifold is purely local, i.e., only depends on the Galois representation at places above $p$. This is a generalization to $\mathrm{GL}_3$ of the lattice conjecture of Breuil. In the process, we also prove the geometric Breuil-Mézard conjecture for (tamely) potentially crystalline deformation rings with Hodge-Tate weights $(0,1,2)$ as well as the Serre weight conjectures over an unramified field extending our previous results. We also prove results in modular representation…
We prove the explicit version of the Buzzard--Diamond--Jarvis conjecture formulated by Diamond--Dembélé--Roberts. More precisely, we prove that it is equivalent to the original Buzzard--Diamond--Jarvis conjecture, which was proved for odd primes (under a mild Taylor--Wiles hypothesis) in earlier work of the third author and coauthors.
Let p > 2 be prime. We prove the weight part of Serre's conjecture for rank two unitary groups for mod p representations in the unramified case (that is, the Buzzard-Diamond-Jarvis conjecture for unitary groups), by proving that any Serre weight which occurs is a predicted weight. This completes the analysis begun in [BLGG11], which proved that all predicted Serre weights occur. Our methods are purely local, using the theory of (phi,Ghat)-modules to determine the possible reductions of certain two-dimensional crystalline representations.
Let $f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_f(n)e^{2πi n z}$ be a non-CM holomorphic cupsidal newform of trivial nebentypus and even integral level $k\geq 2$. Deligne's proof of the Weil conjectures shows that $|a_f(p)|\leq 2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}$ for all primes $p$. We prove for 100% of primes $p$ that $2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}\frac{\log\log p}{\sqrt{\log p}}<|a_f(p)|<\lfloor 2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}\rfloor$. Our proof gives an effective upper bound for the size of the exceptional set. The lower bound shows that the Atkin-Serre conjecture is satisfied for 100% of primes, and the upper bound shows that $|a_f(p)|$ is as l…
Suppose that $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication and with conductor $N$. For each positive integer $m$, the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on the torsion points over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ gives rise to a representation of $G_\mathbb{Q}$. A celebrated paper of Serre shows that this representation is surjective for all sufficiently large primes; the other primes are termed \emph{exceptional}. Serre conjectures that there are no exceptional primes $\ell>37$ for any non CM elliptic curv…
Motives and automorphic forms of arithmetic type give rise to Galois representations that occur in {\it compatible families}. These compatible families are of p-adic representations with p varying. By reducing such a family mod p one obtains compatible families of mod p representations. While the representations that occur in such a p-adic or mod p family are strongly correlated, in a sense each member of the family reveals a new face of the motive. In recent celebrated work of Wiles playing off a pair of Galois representations in different characteristics has been crucial. In this paper we in…
The proof of Serre's conjecture on Galois representations over finite fields allows us to show, using a method due to Serre himself, that all rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over Q are modular.
The Grothendieck--Serre conjecture predicts that every generically trivial torsor under a reductive group scheme $G$ over a regular local ring $R$ is trivial. We settle it in the case when $G$ is quasi-split and $R$ is unramified. Some of the techniques that allow us to overcome obstacles that have so far kept the mixed characteristic case out of reach include a version of Noether normalization over discrete valuation rings, as well as a suitable presentation lemma for smooth relative curves in mixed characteristic that facilitates passage to the relative affine line via excision and patching.
In this note we prove the non existence of certain irreducible two dimensional representations of the the absolute Galois group. Such results are predicted by Serre's conjecture and we use Fontaine's methods to verify these predictions in a small number of cases. We also use a methods of Faltings to study certain finiteness conjectures for Galois representations. Key words: Serre's conjecture, Fontaine-Mazur conjectures, Galois representations.
I show that a conjecture of Joshi-Rajan on primes of Hodge-Witt reduction and in particular a conjecture of Jean-Pierre Serre on primes of good, ordinary reduction for an abelian variety over a number field follows from a certain conjecture on Galois rep- resentations which may perhaps be easier to prove (and I prove this conjecture for abelian compatible systems of a suitable type). This reduction (to a conjecture about certain sys- tems of Galois representations) is based on a new slope estimate for non Hodge-Witt abelian varieties. In particular for any abelian variety over a number field w…
Let $K$ be a totally real field, and let $S$ be a finite set of non-archimedean places of $K$. It follows from the work of Merel, Momose and David that there is a constant $B_{K,S}$ so that if $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $K$, semistable outside $S$, then for all $p>B_{K,S}$, the representation $\barρ_{E,p}$ is irreducible. We combine this with modularity and level lowering to show the existence of an effectively computable constant $C_{K,S}$, and an effectively computable set of elliptic curves over $K$ with CM $E_1,\dotsc,E_n$ such that the following holds. If $E$ is an elliptic cur…
Let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb Q\_p$ and $\barρ$ be an absolutely irreducible mod~$p$ $2$-dimensional representation of the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $t$ be a tame inertial type of $F$. We conjecture that the deformation space parametrizing the potentially Barsotti--Tate liftings of $\barρ$ having type $t$ depends only on the Kisin variety attached to the situation, enriched with its canonical embedding into $(\mathbb P^1)^f$ and its shape stratification. We give evidences towards this conjecture by proving that the Kisin variety determines the cardinality of the …
A generalization of Serre's Conjecture asserts that if $F$ is a totally real field, then certain characteristic $p$ representations of Galois groups over $F$ arise from Hilbert modular forms. Moreover it predicts the set of weights of such forms in terms of the local behavior of the Galois representation at primes over $p$. This characterization of the weights, which is formulated using $p$-adic Hodge theory, is known under mild technical hypotheses if $p > 2$. In this paper we give, under the assumption that $p$ is unramified in $F$, a conjectural alternative description for the set of weight…
