Grothendieck proved in EGA IV that if any integral scheme of finite type over a locally noetherian scheme X admits a desingularization, then X is quasi-excellent, and conjectured that the converse is probably true. We prove this conjecture for noetherian schemes of characteristic zero. Namely, starting with the resolution of singularities for algebraic varieties of characteristic zero, we prove the resolution of singularities for noetherian quasi-excellent Q-schemes.
We prove that any noetherian quasi-excellent scheme of characteristic zero admits a strong desingularization which is functorial with respect to all regular morphisms. We show that as an easy formal consequence of this result one obtains strong functorial desingularization for many other spaces of characteristic zero including quasi-excellent stacks and formal schemes, and complex and non-archimedean analytic spaces. Moreover, these functors easily generalize to non-compact setting by use of converging blow up hyper-sequences with regular centers.
Our main result establishes functorial desingularization of noetherian quasi-excellent schemes over $\bfQ$ with ordered boundaries. A functorial embedded desingularization of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero is deduced. Furthermore, a standard simple argument extends these results to other categories, including in particular, (equivariant) embedded desingularization of the following objects of characteristic zero: qe algebraic stacks, qe schemes, qe formal schemes, complex and non-archimedean analytic spaces. We also obtain a semistable reduction theorem for formal schemes.
We present a survey on the recent progress with desingularization of quasi-excellent schemes of characteristic zero. Due to expository goals of the paper we concentrate on giving examples and outlining main ideas, and we refer to other sources for detailed proofs and technical details. This survey will be published in the proceedings of the conference "Motivic integration and its interactions with model theory and non-archimedean geometry" (ICMS, May 2008).
These lecture notes provide a unified overview of most known canonical desingularization methods in characteristic zero. It starts with discussing the classical method, and then proceeds with the recently discovered ones: logarithmic desingularization of logarithmic schemes and morphisms, weighted methods: logarithmic and non-logarithmic ones, desingularization in wider contexts: quasi-excellent schemes and formal schemes, complex and non-archimedean spaces.
We strengthen Gabber's $l'$-alteration theorem by avoiding all primes invertible on a scheme. In particular, we prove that any scheme $X$ of finite type over a quasi-excellent threefold can be desingularized by a $\mathrm{char}(X)$-alteration, i.e. an alteration whose order is only divisible by primes non-invertible on $X$. The main new ingredient in the proof is a tame distillation theorem asserting that, after enlarging, any alteration of $X$ can be split into a composition of a tame Galois alteration and a $\mathrm{char}(X)$-alteration. The proof of the distillation theorem is based on the …
We prove an embedded local uniformization theroem for a valuation centered on a point of a quasi-excellent scheme of characteristic zero. The proof reduces to valuations of rank 1 and consists in desingularizing the ideal formed by the elements of infinite value and monomializing the key polynomials. We then prove a monomialization theorem valid in all characteristic under certain conditions, including that of non-existence of limit key polynomials, a condition that is always satified in characteristic zero.
The notion of Macaulayfication, which is analogous of the desingularization, was introduced by Faltings in 1978 and he construct a Macaulayfication of quasi-projective scheme whose non-Cohen-Macaulay locus is of dimension 0 or 1 by a characteristic free method. In this paper, we gave a Macaulayfication of a quasi-projective scheme whose non-Cohen-Macaulay locus is of dimension 2. Of course out method is independent of the characteristic.
This book contains notes of a seminar on Ofer Gabber's work on the etale cohomology and uniformization of quasi-excellent schemes. His main results include (cf. introduction) constructibility theorems (for abelian or non-abelian coefficients), vanishing theorems (e.g. affine Lefschetz), uniformization for the "prime-to-l alteration topology", rigidity for non-abelian coefficients, a new proof of the absolute purity conjecture, duality, etc.
In this paper, we give a detailed proof to a result of Gabber (unpublished) on the lifting problem of quasi-excellent rings, extending the previous work on Nishimura-Nishimura. As a corollary, we establish that an ideal-adic completion of an excellent (resp. quasi-excellent) ring is excellent (resp. quasi-excellent).
We show that a version of the desingularization theorem of Hironaka holds for certain classes of infinitely differentiable functions (essentially, for subrings that exclude flat functions and are closed under differentiation and the solution of implicit equations). Examples are quasianalytic classes, introduced by E. Borel a century ago and characterized by the Denjoy-Carleman theorem. These classes have been poorly understood in dimension > 1. Resolution of singularities can be used to obtain many new results; for example, topological Noetherianity, Lojasiewicz inequalities, division properti…
We prove Grothendieck's Conjecture on Resolution of Singulari-ties for quasi-excellent schemes X of dimension three and of arbitrary characteristic. This applies in particular to X = SpecA, A a reduced complete Noetherian local ring of dimension three and to algebraic or arithmetical varieties of dimension three. Similarly, if F is a number field, a complete discretely valued field or more generally the quotient field of any excellent Dedekind domain O, any regular projective sur-face X/F has a proper and flat model X over O which is everywhere regular.
In this article we construct a categorical resolution of singularities of an excellent reduced curve $X$, introducing a certain sheaf of orders on $X$. This categorical resolution is shown to be a recollement of the derived category of coherent sheaves on the normalization of $X$ and the derived category of finite length modules over a certain artinian quasi-hereditary ring $Q$ depending purely on the local singularity types of $X$. Using this technique, we prove several statements on the Rouquier dimension of the derived category of coherent sheaves on $X$. Moreover, in the case $X$ is ration…
We extend (scheme-theoretic) Bruhat-Tits theory to quasi-reductive groups i.e. with trivial split unipotent radical over discretely valued henselian non-archimedean fields $K$, whose ring of integers is excellent and residue field is perfect, building on Bruhat-Tits I et II and the classification of pseudo-reductive groups by Conrad-Gabber-Prasad. The buildings had been constructed previously by Solleveld in a different manner, but they ultimately coincide with ours. We were motivated by the geometry of affine Grassmannians and give some applications at the end (compare also with previously su…
