We extend (scheme-theoretic) Bruhat-Tits theory to quasi-reductive groups i.e. with trivial split unipotent radical over discretely valued henselian non-archimedean fields $K$, whose ring of integers is excellent and residue field is perfect, building on Bruhat-Tits I et II and the classification of pseudo-reductive groups by Conrad-Gabber-Prasad. The buildings had been constructed previously by Solleveld in a different manner, but they ultimately coincide with ours. We were motivated by the geometry of affine Grassmannians and give some applications at the end (compare also with previously submitted work arXiv:1912.11918).
Let K be the function field of a curve over the complex field. Let X be a homogeneous space of a semisimple linear algebraic group. Strong approximation holds for X outside any finite nonempty set of places of K. Strong approximation fails for tori over K.
Following Steinberg, we construct an adjoint quotient for the Vinberg semi-group and a section to this quotient. Then, after Ngô, we show the existence of a regular centralizer on it and use it to compute the affine Springer fibers for groups.
Starting from our work on Harder-Narasimhan filtrations of finite flat group schemes over a $p$-adic field, we developp a theory of Harder-Narasimhan filtrations for $p$-divisible groups. We apply this to the study of the geometry of period morphisms for Rapoport-Zink spaces and to the $p$-adic geometry of Shimura varieties. We define and study in particular some fundamental domains for the action of Hecke correspondences.
Let X be a smooth compactification of a connected linear algebraic group over a field k. The Chow group of degree nought zero-cycles on X is a torsion group. When k is a p-adic field, we show that the prime-to-p component of this group is finite.
Paper withdrawn. There is a gap in the proof of Proposition 4.3 (its conclusion ``d'où la proposition.'' is incorrect). Therefore theorems 1.1 and 3.1, which were the main results of the paper, are not proved.
For a homogeneous space X of a connected algebraic group G (with connected stabilizers) over a field k of characteristic zero, we construct a canonical complex of Galois modules of length 3 and a canonical isomorphism between an hypercohomology group of this complex and an explicit subgroup of the Brauer group of X. This result is obtained as a consequence of a formula describing the "algebraic Brauer group of a torsor", and it generalizes recent results by Borovoi and van Hamel, by considering non-linear groups G and by taking into account some transcendental elements in the Brauer group of X…
In this paper, for a smooth variety equiped with an action of a connected algebraic group (not necessary linear), we introduce the notion of invariant Brauer sub-group and the notion of invariant étale Brauer-Manin obstruction. Then we prove that this obstruction is equivalent to the étale Brauer-Manin obstruction. This extends the main notion and the key result of [C17]. As a corollary, this also extends a result of B. Creutz.
Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group over a number field. Let $U \hookrightarrow X$ be a $G$-equivariant open embedding of a $G$-homogeneous space with connected stabilizers into a smooth $G$-variety. We prove that $X$ satisfies strong approximation with Brauer-Manin condition off a set $S$ of places of $k$ under either of the following hypotheses : (i) $S$ is the set of archimedean places; (ii) $S$ is a nonempty finite set and $\bar{k}^{\times}= \bar{k}[X]^{\times}$. The proof builds upon the case $X=U$, which has been the object of several works.
Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth projective curve $X$ over a higher-dimensional local field $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K$ coming from a closed point of $X$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes, for tori, for groups of multiplicative type, and even for 2-term complexes of tori. We apply these results to the weak approximation for tori over $K$ and to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K$-torsors under a …
In this note we consider a quotient π: X-> X/G, with G a finite group and X a smooth projective scheme such that X/G is smooth. We compare the equivariant derived category D^G(X) and the derived category of the quotient D(X/G) by giving the image of the functor π^*: D(X/G)-> D^G(X).
Let k be a field, G a finite group embedded in the k-group SL(n). For k an algebraically closed field, Bogomolov gave a formula for the unramified Brauer group of the quotient SL(n)/G. We develop his method over any characteristic zero field. This purely algebraic method enables us to recover and generalize results of Harari and of Demarche over number fields, such as the triviality of the unramified Brauer group for k=Q and G of odd order.
Assuming the purity conjecture for the affine Springer fibers which has been formulated by Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson, we prove a geometric analog of the fundamental lemma for unitary groups. Our approach is similar to the one of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson. Our main new ingredient is the link between affine Springer fibers and compactified Jacobians which is described in math.AG/0204109.
For any reductive group G over a global function field, we use the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence to prove the global Langlands correspondence for G in the "automorphic to Galois" direction. Moreover we obtain a canonical decomposition of the spaces of cuspidal automorphic forms indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof does not rely at all on the Arthur-Selberg trace formula.
This is an introduction to the article "Chtoucas pour les groupes réductifs et paramétrisation de Langlands globale", arXiv:1209.5352. We explain all the ideas of the proof. Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field. Assuming $H^2(X,\mathcal O_X)=0,$ Colliot-Thélène and Raskind proved that the torsion subgroup $CH^2(X)_{tors}$ in the Chow group of cycles of codimension $2$ is finite.…
Inspired by the Bruhat-Tits building of SL$_n$($\mathbb Q_p$), we construct a complete metric space X with an action of the tame automorphism group of the affine space Tame($K^n$). The points in X are certain monomial valuations, and X admits a natural structure of Euclidean CW-complex of dimension n-1. When n = 3, and for K of characteristic zero, we prove that X has non-positive curvature and is simply connected, hence is a CAT(0) space. As an application we obtain the linearizability of finite subgroups in Tame($K^3$).
----- Let $K$ be a global field and $G$ a finite…
----- Assuming Schinzel's hypothesis and the finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups of elliptic curves over number fields, smooth intersections of two quadrics i…
The third unramified cohomology group is shown to vanish on certain varieties equipped with a pencil of quadrics or of smooth complete intersections of two quadrics. Over the complex field, this shows that the integral Hodge conjecture in degree 4 holds for such varieties.
We determine explicitly the irreducible components of the singular locus of any Schubert variety for GL_n(K), K being an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We also describe the generic singularities along these components. The case of covexillary Schubert varieties was solved in an earlier work of the author [Ann. Inst. Fourier vol. 51 fasc. 2 (2001), 375-393]. Here, we first exhibit some irreducible components of the singular locus of X_w, by describing the generic singularity along each of them. Let S_w be the union of these components. As mentioned above, the equality S…
Let G be an unramified reductive group over a non archimedian local field F. The so-called "Langlands Fundamental Lemma" is a family of conjectural identities between orbital integrals for G(F) and orbital integrals for endoscopic groups of G. In this paper we prove the Langlands fundamental lemma in the particular case where F is a finite extension of F_p((t)), G is a unitary group and p>rank(G). Waldspurger has shown that this particular case implies the Langlands fundamental lemma for unitary groups of rank <p when F is any finite extension of Q_p. We follow in part a strategy initiated by …
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, a finite field or a $p$-adic field. Let $K_0=k((x,y))$ be the field of Laurent series in two variables over $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme over $K_0$ via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K_0$ coming from a codimension 1 point of $\text{Spec}\; k[[x,y]]$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes and for tori. Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the i…
We establish the vanishing of the third unramified cohomology group for many types of Fano hypersurfaces in projective space over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, and over a finite field. For cubic hypersurfaces over a finite field, the case of fourfolds remains open.
Let K be a global field, T a K-torus and S a finite set of places of K. Let K_v be the completion at a place v. Denote by T(O_v) the maximal compact subgroup of the group T(K_v) of K_v-points of T. We show that the diagonal map from T(K) to the product for v in S of the T(K_v)/T(O_v) need not be onto. As a corollary, for suitable v, the group T(O_v) does not cover all R-equivalence classes in T(K_v). While studying the height zeta functions of an algebraic torus over a function field in one variable over a finite field, D. Bourqui showed that Peyre's constant from the number field case should …
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finite field $\F$. We discuss the unramified cohomology group $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$. Several conjectures put together imply that this group is finite. For certain classes of threefolds, $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ actually vanishes. It is an open question whether this holds true for arbitrary threefolds. For a threefold $X$ equipped with a fibration onto a curve $C$, the generic fibre of which is a smooth projective surface $V$ over the global field $\F(C)$, the vanishing of $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ together with the Tate conjecture for divisors on $X$ impl…
----- We propose in this paper a theory of $p$-adic periods for finite flat group schemes. We pr…
We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for homogeneous spaces with nilpotent stabilizer. We thus generalize recent results by Harpaz and Wittenberg on finite "hyper-solvable" stabilizers. In particular, this result is true for abelian stabilizers without any hypotheses on the ambient group, which generalizes classic results by Borovoi on the subject. We prove moreover that these spaces have the real approximation property.
The goal of this note is to give a geometric interpretation of a theorem of Brenti that calculates Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials associated to Coxeter groups, if the Coxeter group is isomorphic to a Weyl group.
Let $X$ be a complete symmetric variety i.e. the wonderful compactification of a symmetric $G-$homogeneous space (where $G$ is a simply-connected semi-simple linear algebraic group). If $L$ is a line bundle over $X$ and if $C$ is a Bialynicki-Birula cell of codimension $c$ in $X$, then the Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ of $G$ operates naturally on the cohomology group with support : $H^c_C(L)$. One gives here a necessary condition on the cell $C$ for that $\mathfrak g-$module have a finite dimensional simple subquotient. As applications one calculates the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of $L$ over …
Building upon the Bloch-Kato conjecture in Milnor K-theory, we relate the third unramified cohomology group with Q/Z coefficients with a group which measures the failure of the integral Hodge conjecture in degree 4. As a first consequence, a geometric theorem of the second-named author implies that the third unramified cohomology group with Q/Z coefficients vanishes on all uniruled threefolds. As a second consequence, a 1989 example by Ojanguren and the first named author implies that the integral Hodge conjecture in degree 4 fails for unirational varieties of dimension at least 6. For certain…
Let X be a smooth and proper variety over a number field k. Conjectures on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the corresponding groups over all completions of k were put forward by Colliot-Thélène, Kato and Saito. Let F be a function field in two variables over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The main part of this Bourbaki talk describes A. J. de Jong's proof (Duke Math. J. 123 (2004) 71-94) that index and exponent coincide for central simple algebras over F. The text follows the simplified approach sketched at the end of de Jong's paper. Applications to linear algebraic groups are given. English: We continue the study of G. Castelnuovo on the group of birational transformation of the complex plane that fix each point of a curve of genus >1; we use adjoint linear system of the curve as Castelnuovo does. Given a valuation ring $V$, with residue field $F$ and value group $Γ$, we give a sufficient condition…
----- We prove that p-adic…
Gabber deduced his theorem of independence of $l$ of intersection cohomology from a general stability result over finite fields. In this article, we prove an analogue of this general result over local fields. More precisely, we introduce a notion of independence of $l$ for systems of complexes of $l$-adic sheaves on schemes of finite type over a local field, equivariant under finite groups. We establish its stability by Grothendieck's six operations and the nearby cycle functor. Our method leads to a new proof of Gabber's theorem. We also give a generalization to algebraic stacks. ----- Gabber…
