Let k be a field, G a finite group embedded in the k-group SL(n). For k an algebraically closed field, Bogomolov gave a formula for the unramified Brauer group of the quotient SL(n)/G. We develop his method over any characteristic zero field. This purely algebraic method enables us to recover and generalize results of Harari and of Demarche over number fields, such as the triviality of the unramified Brauer group for k=Q and G of odd order.

Using a reduction of the Galois cohomology of a linear algebraic group $G$ to that of a certain finite subquotient, we give different formulas allowing the calculation of the unramified algebraic Brauer group of a homogeneous space $V=G\backslash G'$ with $G'$ semisimple and simply connected, both over a finite field and over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$.
Paper withdrawn. There is a gap in the proof of Proposition 4.3 (its conclusion ``d'où la proposition.'' is incorrect). Therefore theorems 1.1 and 3.1, which were the main results of the paper, are not proved.
The third unramified cohomology group is shown to vanish on certain varieties equipped with a pencil of quadrics or of smooth complete intersections of two quadrics. Over the complex field, this shows that the integral Hodge conjecture in degree 4 holds for such varieties.
We develop different formulas of algebraic and/or arithmetic nature allowing an explicit calculation, both over a finite field and over a field of characteristic 0, of the algebraic part of the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space G\G' under a semisiple simply connected linear group G' with finite stabilizer G. We also give examples of the calculations that can be done with these formulas.
Let k be a field, G a smooth connected linear algebraic group and X a homogeneous space of G over k, such that the geometric stabilizers are extensions of a smooth group of multiplicative type by a smooth connected characterfree group. If k has characteristic zero and if X^c is a smooth compactification of X over k, we obtain a formula for the algebraic Brauer group of X^c. Several variants are obtained in positive characteristic p, including the finite field case and the global field case, where the formulae describe the prime-to-p part of the algebraic unramified Brauer group of X, without a…
We establish the vanishing of the third unramified cohomology group for many types of Fano hypersurfaces in projective space over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, and over a finite field. For cubic hypersurfaces over a finite field, the case of fourfolds remains open.
Using a theorem of Gabber on alterations, we prove a result describing the prime-to-$p$ torsion part of the unramified Brauer group of a smooth and geometrically integral variety $V$ over a global field of characteristic $p$ by evaluating the elements of $\Br V$ at its local …
Let k be a field, X a smooth, projective k-variety. If X is geometrically rational, there is an injective map from the quotient of Brauer groups Br(X)/Br(k) into the first Galois cohomology group of the lattice given by the geometric Picard group. In this note, where the main attention is on smooth compactifications of homogeneous spaces of algebraic k-tori, we show how under some hypotheses the map is onto, and how one may in some special case exhibit concrete generators in Br(X). This is applied to the analysis of counterexamples to the local-global principle for norms in biquadratic extensi…
Let F be a finite field and let C be a smooth projective curve over F. For some smooth projective surfaces X over F we establish that the third unramified cohomology of the product of X and C vanishes. This applies in particular to geometrically rational surfaces.
Colliot-Th{é}l{è}ne has determined the Chow group of zero-cycles on a Ch{â}telet surface X defined over a finite extension K of the field of p-adic numbers (p an odd prime) when X is split by an unramified extension of K. Using similar techniques, we extend this calculation to the ramified case, simplifying his result in the process. We also determine how this group changes when we pass from K to a finite extension of K.
Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0. When p>2, Fontaine and Laffaille have classified p-divisibles groups and finite flat p-groups over the Witt vectors W(k) in terms of filtered modules. Still assuming p>2, we extend these classifications over an arbitrary complete discrete valuation ring A with unequal characteristic (0,p) and residue field k by using "generalized" filtered modules. In particular, there is no restriction on the ramification index. In the case k is included in \bar{F}_p (and p>2), we then use this new classification to prove that any crystalline representation of t…
Given a valuation ring $V$, with residue field $F$ and value group $Γ$, we give a sufficient condition…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finite field $\F$. We discuss the unramified cohomology group $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$. Several conjectures put together imply that this group is finite. For certain classes of threefolds, $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ actually vanishes. It is an open question whether this holds true for arbitrary threefolds. For a threefold $X$ equipped with a fibration onto a curve $C$, the generic fibre of which is a smooth projective surface $V$ over the global field $\F(C)$, the vanishing of $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ together with the Tate conjecture for divisors on $X$ impl…
Building upon the Bloch-Kato conjecture in Milnor K-theory, we relate the third unramified cohomology group with Q/Z coefficients with a group which measures the failure of the integral Hodge conjecture in degree 4. As a first consequence, a geometric theorem of the second-named author implies that the third unramified cohomology group with Q/Z coefficients vanishes on all uniruled threefolds. As a second consequence, a 1989 example by Ojanguren and the first named author implies that the integral Hodge conjecture in degree 4 fails for unirational varieties of dimension at least 6. For certain…
Let X be a smooth compactification of a connected linear algebraic group over a field k. The Chow group of degree nought zero-cycles on X is a torsion group. When k is a p-adic field, we show that the prime-to-p component of this group is finite.
We study $p$-divisible groups $G$ endowed with an action of the ring of integers of a finite (possibly ramified) extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ over a scheme of characteristic $p$. We suppose moreover that the $p$-divisible group $G$ satisfies the Pappas-Rapoport condition for a certain datum $μ$ ; this condition consists in a filtration on the sheaf of differentials $ω_G$ satisfying certain properties. Over a perfect field, we define the Hodge and Newton polygons for such $p$-divisible groups, normalized with the action. We show that the Newton polygon lies above the Hodge polygon, itself lying …
We give criteria for R-equivalence of torsors under finite constant group schemes over a field. In paticular, using bitorsors, we obtain a Galois devissage result which formalises and generalises a theorem of Philippe Gille in the case of local fields; for instance, Gille's theorem is shown to extend to higher local fields.
Using the construction of Colliot-Thélène and Ojanguren, we exhibit an example of a smooth projective geometrically rational variety X defined over a finite field F_p with an algebraic closure \bar F_p and the absolute Galois group G, such that the group H^3_nr(X, Z/2) is nonzero and the map CH^2(X)\to CH^2(\bar X)^G is not surjective.
Ceci est un rapport sur l'article "A finiteness theorem for zero-cycles over p-adic fields" (arXiv:math/0605165) de Shuji Saito et Kanetomo Sato. ----- This is a survey on the paper "A finiteness theorem for zero-cycles over p-adic fields" (arXiv:math/0605165) by Shuji Saito and Kanetomo Sato.
Let p be a rational prime, k be a perfect field of characteristic p and K be a finite totally ramified extension of the fraction field of the Witt ring of k. Let G be a finite flat commutative group scheme over O_K killed by some p-power. In this paper, we prove a description of ramification subgroups of G via the Breuil-Kisin classification, generalizing the author's previous result on the case where G is killed by p>2. As an application, we also prove that the higher canonical subgroup of a level n truncated Barsotti-Tate group G over O_K coincides with lower ramification subgroups of G if t…
Starting from our work on Harder-Narasimhan filtrations of finite flat group schemes over a $p$-adic field, we developp a theory of Harder-Narasimhan filtrations for $p$-divisible groups. We apply this to the study of the geometry of period morphisms for Rapoport-Zink spaces and to the $p$-adic geometry of Shimura varieties. We define and study in particular some fundamental domains for the action of Hecke correspondences.
Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the i…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety defined over a number field. Assuming $H^2(X,\mathcal O_X)=0,$ Colliot-Thélène and Raskind proved that the torsion subgroup $CH^2(X)_{tors}$ in the Chow group of cycles of codimension $2$ is finite.…
We determine the Chow group of zero-cycles on a rational surface X defined over a finite extension K of the field of p-adic numbers (p a prime) when X is split by an unramified extension of K.
In this note we consider a quotient π: X-> X/G, with G a finite group and X a smooth projective scheme such that X/G is smooth. We compare the equivariant derived category D^G(X) and the derived category of the quotient D(X/G) by giving the image of the functor π^*: D(X/G)-> D^G(X).
(On the fundamental group of rationnally connected varieties.) I show that the fundamental group of a normal variety which is rationally chain connected is finite. The proof holds in non-zero characteristic.
Let $k_0$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$ and $k=k_0(t)$, where $t$ is transcendental over $k_0$. We give an example of a smooth connected unipotent $k$-group $G$ such that $G(F)/R$ is non-commutative for some finite separable field extension $F$ containing $k$.
Burger and Mozes constructed examples of infinite simple groups which are lattices in the group of automorphisms of a cubical building. We show that there can be no morphism with finitely generated kernel from a Kähler group to one of these groups.
For a smooth and projective variety X over a field k of characteristic zero we prove the finiteness of the cokernel of the natural map from the Brauer group of X to the Galois-invariant subgroup of the Brauer group of the same variety over an algebraic closure of k. Under further conditions on k, e.g. over number fields, we give estimates for the order of this cokernel.
Let $k$ be a complete non-Archimedean field, $L$ a finite tamely ramified galoisian extension of $k$ and $X$ a $k$-analytic space. We show that $X$ is isomorphic to a closed $k$-polydisc (resp. a $k$-lace) if and only if $X_L$ is isomorphic to a closed $L$-polydisc (resp. a $L$-lace) on which the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(L/k)$ is reasonable.
Given a projective variety X over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we show that finite parabolic bundles along a fixed simple normal crossings divisor D are in one to one correspondence with representations of the étale fundamental group of X-D.
this paper is devoted to the study of curves of genus 3 with group of automorphisms the symmetric group S3, principally over finite fields, in view to obtain optimal curves. For instance, we prove that, over the finite fields of char. 3, for any elliptic curve E with j-invariant not in F_3, there exists a curve of genus 3 whose jacobian is isogeneous to E^3; we have also results in char. 7, and these curves provide many examples of optimal curves in any char.
For a simple, normal and finite extension of a valued field, we prove that we can related the order of the ramification group of the field extension and the set of key polynomials associated to the extension of the valuation. More precisely, the order of this group can be expressed in terms of a product of a power of the characteristic of the residue field of the valuation and the effective degrees of the key polynomials. We also give a condition on the order of the ramification group so that there is no limit key polynomials for a valuation of rank one. This condition also allow us to have a …
The results known for Green-Lazarsfeld sets and solvable or nilpotent quotients of Kaehler groups are extended to the class of (compact Kaehler) geometric orbifolds with finite and integral multiplicities. The proofs are by reduction to the known case of compact Kaehler manifolds.
Let K be the function field of a curve over the complex field. Let X be a homogeneous space of a semisimple linear algebraic group. Strong approximation holds for X outside any finite nonempty set of places of K. Strong approximation fails for tori over K.
In this note we establish the following result (announced in a previous work): if a linear group is the image of a representation of a Kähler group, then it has a finite index subgroup which is the image of a representation of the fundamental group of a smooth projective variety. In particular, a Kähler group which is linear is virtually projective.
