We determine the Chow group of zero-cycles on a rational surface X defined over a finite extension K of the field of p-adic numbers (p a prime) when X is split by an unramified extension of K.
(On the fundamental group of rationnally connected varieties.) I show that the fundamental group of a normal variety which is rationally chain connected is finite. The proof holds in non-zero characteristic.
This is an update of the first version. We clarify that the main results apply to more general smooth projective varieties X than products of elliptic curves (briefly: X is of "abelian type", e.g. an abelian variety or a product of curves, and the Tate conjecture holds). We also deduce the Gersten conjecture for dvrs whose residue field is the function field of such an X. In an appendix, we construct some functoriality for etale motivic cohomology. Finally, some errors which were in Section 5 of the first version are corrected.
If a smooth, geometrically rational surface over a finite field is not rational over that field, then over some finite extension of that field the Brauer group of the surface is nonzero. In particular such a surface is not stably rational. This is a special case of a general statement about geometrically rational surfaces which split over a cyclic extension of their field of definition.
These are lectures notes on rationally connected varieties, written for the "Etats de la Recherche" of the French Mathematical Society held in Strasbourg (May 2008). We focus on geometric aspects. These notes have been written in order that a wide audience can easily read them, except maybe the last section, a bit more technical, where we give the proof of Shokurov rational connectedness conjecture following Hacon and McKernan.
Let F be a finite field and let C be a smooth projective curve over F. For some smooth projective surfaces X over F we establish that the third unramified cohomology of the product of X and C vanishes. This applies in particular to geometrically rational surfaces.
Let X be a smooth compactification of a connected linear algebraic group over a field k. The Chow group of degree nought zero-cycles on X is a torsion group. When k is a p-adic field, we show that the prime-to-p component of this group is finite. Let X be a smooth and proper variety over a number field k. Conjectures on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the corresponding groups over all completions of k were put forward by Colliot-Thélène, Kato and Saito. Using the construction of Colliot-Thélène and Ojanguren, we exhibit an example of a smooth projective geometrically rational variety X defined over a finite field F_p with an algebraic closure \bar F_p and the absolute Galois group G, such that the group H^3_nr(X, Z/2) is nonzero and the map CH^2(X)\to CH^2(\bar X)^G is not surjective.
Let $K$ be the function field of a smooth projective curve $X$ over a higher-dimensional local field $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K$ coming from a closed point of $X$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes, for tori, for groups of multiplicative type, and even for 2-term complexes of tori. Let k be a field, G a finite group embedded in the k-group SL(n). For k an algebraically closed field, Bogomolov gave a formula for the unramified Brauer group of the quotient SL(n)/G. We develop his method over any characteristic zero field. This purely algebraic method enables us to recover and generalize results of Harari and of Demarche over number fields, such as the triviality of the unramified Brauer group for k=Q and G of odd order.
Over any complex cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 2, the Chow group of 1-dimensional cycles is spanned by the lines lying on the hypersurface. The smooth case has already been given several other proofs. Let K be the function field of a curve over the complex field. Let X be a homogeneous space of a semisimple linear algebraic group. Strong approximation holds for X outside any finite nonempty set of places of K. Strong approximation fails for tori over K.
Using a theorem of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin we prove that the Cremona group in 2 dimension is not simple, over any field. More precisely, we show that some elements of this group satisfy a weakened WPD property which is equivalent in our particular context to the Bestvina and Fujiwara's one.

We establish the vanishing of the third unramified cohomology group for many types of Fano hypersurfaces in projective space over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, and over a finite field.
Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the i…
Let K be a global field, T a K-torus and S a finite set of places of K. Let K_v be the completion at a place v. Denote by T(O_v) the maximal compact subgroup of the group T(K_v) of K_v-points of T. We show that the diagonal map from T(K) to the product for v in S of the T(K_v)/T(O_v) need not be onto. As a corollary, for suitable v, the group T(O_v) does not cover all R-equivalence classes in T(K_v). ----- We prove that p-adic…
This is a thoroughly revised version of math.AG/0502516v1 (24 Feb. 2005). Let k be a field of characteristic zero. Let Y=G/H, where G is a connected linear algebraic group over k and H is a connected closed k-subgroup of G. Let X be a smooth compactification of Y over k. We prove the conjecture set forward in the previous version : the Galois-lattice given by the geometric Picard group of X is flasque. The previous version had only partial results in this direction. They were obtained at the expense of a long d'etour via local and global fields. We owe the drastic improvement to a suggestion b…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a finite field $\F$. We discuss the unramified cohomology group $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$. Several conjectures put together imply that this group is finite. For certain classes of threefolds, $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ actually vanishes. It is an open question whether this holds true for arbitrary threefolds. For a threefold $X$ equipped with a fibration onto a curve $C$, the generic fibre of which is a smooth projective surface $V$ over the global field $\F(C)$, the vanishing of $H^3_\nr(X,\Q/\Z(2))$ together with the Tate conjecture for divisors on $X$ impl…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic 0 and let $K$ be the function field of a smooth projective geometrically integral $k$-curve $X$. Let $T$ be a $K$-torus. In this article, we aim at studying the space of adelic points $T(S,\mathbb{A}_K)$ of $T$ outside a finite set $S$ of closed points of $X$. We start by proving that the group $T(K)$ of rational points of $T$ is always discrete (hence closed) in $T(S,\mathbb{A}_K)$. We then describe the quotient $T(\emptyset,\mathbb{A}_K)/T(K)$ in each of the following three cases: $k$ is an algebraically closed field, $k$ is the field of Laurent series $\…
Given a valuation ring $V$, with residue field $F$ and value group $Γ$, we give a sufficient condition…
----- Let $K$ be a global field and $G$ a finite…
Admettant l'hypothèse de Schinzel et la finitude des groupes de Tate-Shafarevich des courbes elliptiques sur les corps de nombres, toute intersection lisse de deux quadriques dans l'espace projectif de dimension n satisfait au principe de Hasse si n>4. this paper is devoted to the study of curves of genus 3 with group of automorphisms the symmetric group S3, principally over finite fields, in view to obtain optimal curves. For instance, we prove that, over the finite fields of char. 3, for any elliptic curve E with j-invariant not in F_3, there exists a curve of genus 3 whose jacobian is isogeneous to E^3; we have also results in char. 7, and these curves provide many examples of optimal curves in any char. This is a survey on the ancient question : Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k and let V be a vector space over k with an almost free linear action of G on V. Let k(V) denote the field of rational functions on V. Is the subfield of G-invariants of k(V) purely transcendental over k ? For G connected, this is still an open question. After a discussion of general matters (various notions of rationality, various notions of quotients, the no-name lemma), we consider several specific groups G. We then discuss the unramified Brauer group of a function field and describe th…
Gabber deduced his theorem of independence of $l$ of intersection cohomology from a general stability result over finite fields. In this article, we prove an analogue of this general result over local fields. More precisely, we introduce a notion of independence of $l$ for systems of complexes of $l$-adic sheaves on schemes of finite type over a local field, equivariant under finite groups. We establish its stability by Grothendieck's six operations and the nearby cycle functor. Our method leads to a new proof of Gabber's theorem. We also give a generalization to algebraic stacks. ----- Gabber…

Let A be a complex abelian variety and G its Mumford--Tate group. Supposing that the simple abelian subvarieties of A are pairwise non-isogenous, we find a lower bound for the rank of G, which is a little less than log_2 dim A. If we suppose that End A is commutative, then we show that rk G >= log_2 dim A + 2, and this latter bound is sharp. In 1974, D. Coray showed that on a smooth cubic surface with a closed point of degree prime to 3 there exists such a point of degree 1, 4 or 10. We first show how a combination of generisation, specialisation, Bertini theorems and large fields avoids considerations of special cases in his argument. For smooth cubic surfaces with a rational point, we show that any zero-cycle of degree at least 10 is rationally equivalent to an effective cycle. We establish analogues of these results for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2 and of degree 1. For smooth cubic surfaces without a rational point, we relate…
