This is a survey on the ancient question : Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k and let V be a vector space over k with an almost free linear action of G on V. Let k(V) denote the field of rational functions on V. Is the subfield of G-invariants of k(V) purely transcendental over k ? For G connected, this is still an open question. After a discussion of general matters (various notions of rationality, various notions of quotients, the no-name lemma), we consider several specific groups G. We then discuss the unramified Brauer group of a function field and describe the work of Saltman and of Bogomolov, leading to computations of the unramified Brauer group of fields of G-invariants. The text is a thoroughly revised version of a text distributed at the 9th latino-american school (Santiago de Chile, July 1988), various versions of which had been circulated over the years.

We prove that the moduli spaces of framed bundles over a smooth projective curve are rational. We compute the Brauer group of these moduli spaces to be zero under some assumption on the stability parameter.
We consider the reduction of Brauer classes on surfaces over number fields, with a view toward applications to rationality and derived equivalence. We show that a Brauer class on a very general polarized K3 surface over a number field becomes trivial upon reduction for a set of places of positive natural density. As a consequence, there are cubic fourfolds which become rational upon reduction for a positive proportion of places, and there are twisted derived equivalent K3 surfaces which become derived equivalent upon reduction for a positive proportion of places.
We study Brauer-Severi surface bundles over smooth projective varieties via root stacks, with a view towards applications to failure of stable rationality.

Let U^{'s}_{L}(n,d) be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ and fixed determinant L of degree d on a nodal curve Y. The moduli space of semistable vector bundles of rank n and degree $d$ will be denoted by U'_Y(n,d). We calculate the Brauer groups of U^{'s}_{L}(n,d)$. We study the question of rationality of $U^{'s}_{L}(n,d)$ and $U'_Y(n,d)$.
We study the subgroup B_0(G) of H^2(G,Q/Z) consisting of all elements which have trivial restrictions to every Abelian subgroup of G. The group B_0(G) serves as the simplest nontrivial obstruction to stable rationality of algebraic varieties V/G where V is a faithful complex linear representation of the group G. We prove that B_0(G) is trivial for finite simple groups of Lie type A_{\ell}.
This is a textbook on arithmetic geometry with special regard to unramified Brauer groups of algebraic varieties. The topics include Galois cohomology, Brauer groups, obstructions to stable rationality, arithmetic and geometry of quadrics, Weil restriction of scalars, algebraic tori, an example of a stably rational non-rational variety, Brauer-Manin obstruction. All material is split into locally trivial problems with detailed hints.
We study the stable rationality problem for quadric and cubic surface bundles over surfaces from the point of view of the degeneration method for the Chow group of 0-cycles. Our main result is that a very general hypersurface X of bidegree (2,3) in P^2 x P^3 is not stably rational. Via projections onto the two factors, X is a cubic surface bundle over P^2 and a conic bundle over P^3, and we analyze the stable rationality problem from both these points of view. This provides another example of a smooth family of rationally connected fourfolds with rational and nonrational fibers. Finally, we in…
This is a survey on (lack of) stable rationality over arbitrary fields (including algebraically closed fields). Topics addressed include: Rationality and unirationality, R-equivalence on rational points, Chow groups of zero-cycles, Galois action on the Picard group, Brauer group, higher unramified cohomology, global differentials, specialisation method (via R-equivalence), geometrically rational surfaces, cubic hypersurfaces.
The projective orthogonal and symplectic groups $PO_n(F)$ and $PSp_n(F)$ have a natural action on the $F$ vector space $V' = M_n(F) \oplus ... \oplus M_n(F)$. Here we assume $F$ is an infinite field of characteristic not 2. If we assume there is more than one summand in $V'$, then the invariant fields $F(V')^{PO_n}$ and $F(V')^{PSp_n}$ are natural objects. They are, for example, the centers of generic algebras with the appropriate kind of involution. This paper considers the rationality properties of these fields, in the case $1,2$ or 4 are the highest powers of 2 that divide $n$. We derive ra…
Let K be a global field, let S be a finite set of primes of K containing the archimedean primes and let A be an abelian variety over K. We generalize the duality theorem established in our paper "On Neron class groups of abelian varieties" by removing the hypothesis in [op.cit.] that the Tate-Shafarevich group of A is finite. We also derive an exact sequence that relates the indicated group associated to the Jacobian variety of a proper, smooth and geometrically connected curve X over K to a certain finite subquotient of the Brauer group of X. The sequence alluded to above may be regarded as a…
Let $k$ be an infinite field. The notion of retract $k$-rationality was introduced by Saltman in the study of Noether's problem and other rationality problems. We will investigate the retract rationality of a field in this paper. Theorem 1. Let $k\subset K\subset L$ be fields. If $K$ is retract $k$-rational and $L$ is retract $K$-rational, then $L$ is retract $k$-rational. Theorem 2. For any finite group $G$ containing an abelian normal subgroup $H$ such that $G/H$ is a cyclic group, for any complex representation $G \to GL(V)$, the fixed field $\bm{C}(V)^G$ is retract $\bm{C}$-rational. Theor…
The purpose of this paper is to lay the foundations of a theory of invariants in étale cohomology for smooth Artin stacks. We compute the invariants in the case of the stack of elliptic curves, and we use the theory we developed to get some results regarding Brauer groups of algebraic spaces.
We study the birational properties of geometrically rational surfaces from a derived categorical point of view. In particular, we give a criterion for the rationality of a del Pezzo surface over an arbitrary field, namely, that its derived category decomposes into zero-dimensional components. For del Pezzo surfaces of degree at least 5, we construct explicit semiorthogonal decompositions by subcategories of modules over semisimple algebras arising as endomorphism algebras of vector bundles and we show how to retrieve information about the index of the surface from Brauer classes and Chern clas…
For a quasi-projective scheme M which carries a perfect obstruction theory, we construct the virtual cobordism class of M. If M is projective, we prove that the corresponding Chern numbers of the virtual cobordism class are given by integrals of the Chern classes of the virtual tangent bundle. Further, we study cobordism invariants of the moduli space of stable pairs introduced by Pandharipande-Thomas. Rationality of the partition function is conjectured together with a functional equation, which can be regarded as a generalization of the rationality and 1/q <-> q symmetry of the Calabi-Yau ca…
The finite subgroups of $GL_4(\bm{Z})$ are classified up to conjugation in \cite{BBNWZ}; in particular, there exist $710$ non-conjugate finite groups in $GL_4(\bm{Z})$. Each finite group $G$ of $GL_4(\bm{Z})$ acts naturally on $\bm{Z}^{\oplus 4}$; thus we get a faithful $G$-lattice $M$ with ${\rm rank}_\bm{Z} M=4$. In this way, there are exactly $710$ such lattices. Given a $G$-lattice $M$ with ${\rm rank}_\bm{Z} M=4$, the group $G$ acts on the rational function field $\bm{C}(M):=\bm{C}(x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4)$ by multiplicative actions, i.e. purely monomial automorphisms over $\bm{C}$. We are concer…
In this paper we consider various problems involving the action of a reductive group $G$ on an affine variety $V$. We prove some general rationality results about the $G$-orbits in $V$. In addition, we extend fundamental results of Kempf and Hesselink regarding optimal destabilizing parabolic subgroups of $G$ for such general $G$-actions. We apply our general rationality results to answer a question of Serre concerning the behaviour of his notion of $G$-complete reducibility under separable field extensions. Applications of our new optimality results also include a construction which allows us…
