This paper is devoted to give all the technical constructions and definitions that will lead to the construction of an algorithm of resolution of singularities for binomial ideals.
We construct a resolution function that will provide a resolution of singularities for binomial ideals, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. For us, a binomial ideal means an ideal generated by binomial equations without any restriction, including monomials and $p$-th powers, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field.
This resolution function is based in a modified order function, called $E$-order. The $E$-order of a binomial ideal is the order of the ideal along a normal crossing divisor $E$.
The resolution function allows us to construct an algorithm of $E$-\emph{resolution of binomial basic objects}, that will be a subroutine of the main resolution algorithm.
We give a combinatorial algorithm for equivariant embedded resolution of singularities of a toric variety defined over a perfect field. The algorithm is realized by a finite succession of blowings-up with smooth invariant centres that satisfy the normal flatness criterion of Hironaka. The results extend to more general varieties defined locally by binomial equations.
We show that determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors of a generic matrix have a non-commutative desingularization, in that we construct a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over such a variety whose endomorphism ring is Cohen-Macaulay and has finite global dimension. In the case of the determinant of a square matrix, this gives a non-commutative crepant resolution.
In our paper "Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I" we constructed and studied non-commutative resolutions of determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors. At the end of the introduction we asserted that the results could be generalized to determinantal varieties defined by non-maximal minors, at least in characteristic zero. In this paper we prove the existence of non-commutative resolutions in the general case in a manner which is still characteristic free, and carry out the explicit description by generators and relations in characteristic zero. As an applica…
We describe noncommutative desingularizations of determinantal varieties, determinantal varieties defined by minors of generic symmetric matrices, and pfaffian varieties defined by pfaffians of generic anti-symmetric matrices. For maximal minors of square matrices and symmetric matrices, this gives a non-commutative crepant resolution. Along the way, we describe a method to calculate the quiver with relations for any non-commutative desingularizations coming from exceptional collections over partial flag varieties.
Inspired by recent work of Cerulli-Feigin-Reineke on desingularizations of quiver Grassmannians of representations of Dynkin quivers, we obtain desingularizations in considerably more general situations and in particular for Grassmannians of modules over iterated tilted algebras of Dynkin type. Our desingularization map is constructed from Nakajima's desingularization map for graded quiver varieties.
This is a second part of alg-geom/9611015. We construct a natural hyperkaehler desingularization for all singular hyperkaehler varieties. The desingularization theorem was proven in alg-geom/9611015 under additional assumption of local homogeneity. Here we show that local homogeneity is redundant: every singular hyperkaehler variety has locally homogeneous singularities.
We present a new method to achieve an embedded desingularization of a toric variety. Let $W$ be a regular toric variety defined by a fan $Σ$ and $X\subset W$ be a toric embedding. We construct a finite sequence of combinatorial blowing-ups such that the final strict transforms $X'\subset W'$ are regular and $X'$ has normal crossing with the exceptional divisor.
Let X be the direct product of two Grassmann varieties of k- and l-planes in a finite-dimensional vector space V, and let B be the isotropy group of a complete flag in V. We consider B-orbits in X, which are an analog to Schubert cells in Grassmannians. We describe this set of orbits combinatorially and construct desingularizations for the closures of these orbits, similar to the Bott--Samelson desingularizations for Schubert varieties.
We prove that the algorithm for desingularization of algebraic varieties in characteristic zero of the first two authors is functorial with respect to regular morphisms. For this purpose, we show that, in characteristic zero, a regular morphism with connected affine source can be factored into a smooth morphism, a ground-field extension and a generic-fibre embedding. Every variety of characteristic zero admits a regular morphism to a Q-variety. The desingularization algorithm is therefore Q-universal or absolute in the sense that it is induced from its restriction to varieties over Q. As a con…
Let $M$ be a singular hyperkaehler variety, obtained as a moduli space of stable holomorphic bundles on a compact hyperkaehler manifold (alg-geom/9307008). Consider $M$ as a complex variety in one of the complex structures induced by the hyperkaehler structure. We show that normalization of $M$ is smooth, hyperkaehler and does not depend on the choice of induced complex structure.
Given a Cayley-Hamilton smooth order A in a central simple algebra $Σ$, we determine the flat locus of the Brauer-Severi fibration of the smooth order. Moreover, we give a classification of all (reduced) central singularities where the flat locus differs from the Azumaya locus and show that the fibers over the flat, non-Azumaya points near these central singularities can be described as fibered products of graphs of projection maps, thus generalizing an old result of Artin on the fibers of the Brauer-Severi fibration over a ramified point. Finally, we show these fibers are also toric quiver va…
In this paper we propose the concept of formal desingularizations as a substitute for the resolution of algebraic varieties. Though a usual resolution of algebraic varieties provides more information on the structure of singularities there is evidence that the weaker concept is enough for many computational purposes. We give a detailed study of the Jung method and show how it facilitates an efficient computation of formal desingularizations for projective surfaces over a field of characteristic zero, not necessarily algebraically closed. The paper includes a generalization of Duval's Theorem o…
The nilpotent cone of a reductive Lie algebra has a desingularization given by thecotangent bundle of the flag variety. Analogously, the nullcone of a cartesianpower of the algebra has a desingularization given by a vector bundle over theflag variety. As for the nullcone, the subvariety of elements whose componentsare in a same Borel subalgebra, has a desingularization given by a vector bundle overthe flag variety. In this note, some properties of these varieties are given. Forthe study of the commuting variety, the analogous variety to the flag variety isthe closure in the Grassmannian of the…
Let $X$ be any variety in characteristic zero. Let $V \subset X$ be an open subset that has toroidal singularities. We show the existence of a canonical desingularization of $X$ except for V. It is a morphism $f: Y \to X$ , which does not modify the subset $ V $ and transforms $X$ into a toroidal embedding $Y$, with singularities extending those on $V$. Moreover, the exceptional divisor has simple normal crossings on $Y$. The theorem naturally generalizes the Hironaka canonical desingularization. It does not modify the nonsingular locus $V$ and transforms $X$ into a nonsingular variety $Y$. Th…
After briefly recalling some computational aspects of blowing up and of representation of resolution data common to a wide range of desingularization algorithms (in the general case as well as in special cases like surfaces or binomial varieties), we shall proceed to computational applications of resolution of singularities in singularity theory and algebraic geometry, also touching on relations to algebraic statistics and machine learning. Namely, we explain how to compute the intersection form and dual graph of resolution for surfaces, how to determine discrepancies, the log-canoncial thresh…
Grothendieck proved in EGA IV that if any integral scheme of finite type over a locally noetherian scheme X admits a desingularization, then X is quasi-excellent, and conjectured that the converse is probably true. We prove this conjecture for noetherian schemes of characteristic zero. Namely, starting with the resolution of singularities for algebraic varieties of characteristic zero, we prove the resolution of singularities for noetherian quasi-excellent Q-schemes.
We study the Hadamard product of two varieties $V$ and $W$, with particular attention to the situation when one or both of $V$ and $W$ is a binomial variety. The main result of this paper shows that when $V$ and $W$ are both binomial varieties, and the binomials that define $V$ and $W$ have the same binomial exponents, then the defining equations of $V \star W$ can be computed explicitly and directly from the defining equations of $V$ and $W$. This result recovers known results about Hadamard products of binomial hypersurfaces and toric varieties. Moreover, as an application of our main result…
Let $\Fl^a_\la$ be the PBW degeneration of the flag varieties of type $A_{n-1}$. These varieties are singular and are acted upon with the degenerate Lie group $SL_n^a$. We prove that $\Fl^a_\la$ have rational singularities, are normal and locally complete intersections, and construct a desingularization $R_\la$ of $\Fl^a_\la$. The varieties $R_\la$ can be viewed as towers of successive $\bP^1$-fibrations, thus providing an analogue of the classical Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen desingularization. We prove that the varieties $R_\la$ are Frobenius split. This gives us Frobenius splitting for the…
It is known since the works of Zariski in early 40ies that desingularization of varieties along valuations (called local uniformization of valuations) can be considered as the local part of the desingularization problem. It is still an open problem if local uniformization exists in positive characteristic and dimension larger than three. In this paper, we prove that Zariski local uniformization of algebraic varieties is always possible after a purely inseparable extension of the field of rational functions, i.e. any valuation can be uniformized by a purely inseparable alteration.
Taking symmetric powers of varieties can be seen as a functor from the category of varieties to the category of varieties with an action by the symmetric group. We study a corresponding map between the Grothendieck groups of these categories. In particular, we derive a binomial formula and use it to give explicit expressions for the classes of universal quasi-split tori in the equivariant Grothendieck group of varieties.
We introduce the notion of combinatorial type of varieties $X$ which generalizes the concept of the dual complex of SNC divisors. It is a unique, up to homotopy, finite simplicial complex $Σ(X)$ which is functorial with respect to morphisms of varieties. Its cohomology $H^i(Σ(X),Q)$ for complex projective varieties coincide with weight zero part of the Deligne filtration $W_0(H^i(X,Q))$. The notion can be understood as a topological measure of the singularities of algebaric schemes of finite type. We also prove that any variety in characteristic zero admits the Hironaka desingularization with …
We investigate the structure of ideals generated by binomials (polynomials with at most two terms) and the schemes and varieties associated to them. The class of binomial ideals contains many classical examples from algebraic geometry, and it has numerous applications within and beyond pure mathematics. The ideals defining toric varieties are precisely the binomial prime ideals. Our main results concern primary decomposition: If $I$ is a binomial ideal then the radical, associated primes, and isolated primary components of $I$ are again binomial, and $I$ admits primary decompositions in terms …
We present a class of homogeneous ideals which are generated by monomials and binomials of degree two and are set-theoretic complete intersections. This class includes certain reducible varieties of minimal degree and, in particular, the presentation ideals of the fiber cone algebras of monomial varieties of codimension two.
We propose a method to compute a desingularization of a normal affine variety X endowed with a torus action in terms of a combinatorial description of such a variety due to Altmann and Hausen. This desingularization allows us to study the structure of the singularities of X. In particular, we give criteria for X to have only rational, (QQ-)factorial, or (QQ-)Gorenstein singularities. We also give partial criteria for X to be Cohen-Macaulay or log-terminal. Finally, we provide a method to construct factorial affine varieties with a torus action. This leads to a full classification of such varie…
We study products of irreducible theta divisors from two points of view. On the one hand, we characterize them as normal subvarieties of abelian varieties such that a desingularization has holomorphic Euler characteristic 1. On the other hand, we identify them up to birational equivalence among all varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. We also describe the structure of maximal Albanese dimension varieties X with holomorphic Euler characteristic 1 and irregularity 2dim X-1.
A T-variety is an algebraic variety X with an effective regular action of an algebraic torus T. Altmann and Hausen gave a combinatorial description of an affine T-variety X by means of polyhedral divisors. In this paper we compute the higher direct images of the structure sheaf of a desingularization of X in terms of this combinatorial data. As a consequence, we give a criterion as to when a T-variety has rational singularities. We also provide a partial criterion for a T-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay. As an application we characterize in this terms quasihomogeneous elliptic singularities of su…
We consider a desingularization Gamma of a Richardson variety X_w^v=X_w \cap X^v in the flag variety Fl(n)=GL(n)/B, obtained as a fibre of a projection from a certain Bott-Samelson variety Z. We then construct a basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of Gamma inside Z, indexed by combinatorial objects which we call w_0-standard tableaux.
We show that for all $n\geq 3$ and all primes $p$ there are infinitely many simplicial toric varieties of codimension $n$ in the $2n$-dimensional affine space whose minimum number of defining equations is equal to $n$ in characteristic $p$, and lies between $2n-2$ and $2n$ in all other characteristics. In particular, these are new examples of varieties which are set-theoretic complete intersections only in one positive characteristic.\newline Moreover, we show that the minimum number of binomial equations which define these varieties in all characteristics is 4 for $n=3$ and $2n-2+{n-2\choose …
We use incidence relations running in two directions in order to construct a Kempf-Laksov type resolution for any Schubert variety of the complete flag manifold but also an embedded resolution for any Schubert variety in the Grassmannian. These constructions are alternatives to the celebrated Bott-Samelson resolutions. The second process led to the introduction of W-flag varieties, algebro-geometric objects that interpolate between the standard flag manifolds and products of Grassmannians, but which are singular in general. The surprising simple desingularization of a particular such type of v…
We explore the relationship between two desingularization techniques for Schubert varieties. The Bott-Samelson resolution is the more common of the two, but it fails to encompass many properties that Hironaka resolutions provide, in particular, being an isomorphism over the smooth locus. Using a computer search, a list of cases where Bott-Samelson resolutions having this "strictness" property is compiled for the $n=5,6$ cases. A conjecture based on these results is formulated and is subsequently verified for $n=7,8$. A comparison between Bott-Samelson resolutions and blow-ups is also provided.
In this paper, the concepts of binomial difference ideals and toric difference varieties are defined and their properties are proved. Two canonical representations for Laurent binomial difference ideals are given using the reduced Groebner basis of Z[x]-lattices and regular and coherent difference ascending chains, respectively. Criteria for a Laurent binomial difference ideal to be reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, and toric are given in terms of their support lattices which are Z[x]-lattices. The reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of a Laurent binomial difference ideal are show…
We present a class of toric varieties $V$ which, over any algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, are defined by codim $V$+1 binomial equations.
We consider the problem of testing whether the points in a complex or real variety with non-zero coordinates form a multiplicative group or, more generally, a coset of a multiplicative group. For the coset case, we study the notion of shifted toric varieties which generalizes the notion of toric varieties. This requires a geometric view on the varieties rather than an algebraic view on the ideals. We present algorithms and computations on 129 models from the BioModels repository testing for group and coset structures over both the complex numbers and the real numbers. Our methods over the comp…
We study the partial resolutions of singularities related to Hilbert schemes of points on an affine space. Consider a quotient of a vector space $V$ by an action of a finite group $G$ of linear transforms. Under some additional assumptions, we prove that the partial desingularization of Hilbert type is smooth only if the action of $G$ is generated by complex reflections. This is used to study the subvarieties of a Hilbert scheme of a complex torus. We show that any subvariety of a generic deformation of a Hilbert scheme of a torus is birational to a quotient of another torus by an action of a …
Given an ideal $\mathcal I$ on a variety $X$ with toroidal singularities, we produce a modification $X' \to X$, functorial for toroidal morphisms, making the ideal monomial on a toroidal stack $X'$. We do this by adapting the methods of [Wło05], discarding steps which become redundant. We deduce functorial resolution of singularities for varieties with logarithmic structures. This is the first step in our program to apply logarithmic desingularization to a morphism $Z \to B$, aiming to prove functorial semistable reduction theorems.
Given a semi-algebraic set S, we study compactifications of S that arise from embeddings into complete toric varieties. This makes it possible to describe the asymptotic growth of polynomial functions on S in terms of combinatorial data. We extend our earlier work to compute the ring of bounded functions in this setting and discuss applications to positive polynomials and the moment problem. Complete results are obtained in special cases, like sets defined by binomial inequalities. We also show that the wild behaviour of certain examples constructed by Krug and by Mondal-Netzer cannot occur in…
We provide an explicit desingularization and study the resulting fiber geometry of elliptically fibered fourfolds defined by Weierstrass models admitting a split A_4 singularity over a divisor of the discriminant locus. Such varieties are used to geometrically engineer SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in F-theory. The desingularization is given by a small resolution of singularities. The I_5 fiber naturally appears after resolving the singularities in codimension-one in the base. The remaining higher codimension singularities are then beautifully described by a four dimensional affine binomial var…
In this paper, the concept of toric difference varieties is defined and four equivalent descriptions for toric difference varieties are presented in terms of difference rational parametrization, difference coordinate rings, toric difference ideals, and group actions by difference tori. Connections between toric difference varieties and affine N[x]-semimodules are established by proving the correspondence between the irreducible invariant difference subvarieties and the faces of the N[x]-submodules and the orbit-face correspondence. Finally, an algorithm is given to decide whether a binomial di…
This is loosely a continuation of the author's previous paper arXiv:1802.09496. In the first part, given a fibered variety, we pull back the Leray filtration to the Chow group, and use this to give some criteria for the Hodge and Tate conjectures to hold for such varieties. In the second part, we show that the Hodge conjecture holds for a good desingularization of a self fibre product of a non-isotrivial elliptic surface under appropriate conditions. We also show that the Hodge and Tate conjectures hold for natural families of abelian varieties parameterized by certain Shimura curves. This use…
Given any diagonal cyclic subgroup $Λ\subset GL(n+1,k)$ of order $d$, let $I_d\subset k[x_0,\ldots, x_n]$ be the ideal generated by all monomials $\{m_{1},\ldots, m_{r}\}$ of degree $d$ which are invariants of $Λ$. $I_d$ is a monomial Togliatti system, provided $r \leq \binom{d+n-1}{n-1}$, and in this case the projective toric variety $X_d$ parameterized by $(m_{1},\ldots, m_{r})$ is called a $GT$-variety with group $Λ$. We prove that all these $GT$-varieties are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and we give a combinatorial expression of their Hilbert functions. In the case $n=2$, we compute expli…
