We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence to be exactly realizable as the sequence of numbers of periodic points in a dynamical system. Using these conditions, we show that no non-constant polynomial is realizable, and give some conditions on realizable binary recurrence sequences. Realization in rate is always possible for sufficiently rapidly-growing sequences, and is never possible for slowly-growing sequences. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the growth rate of periodic points and the growth rate of points with specified least period.
We investigate the question of which growth rates are possible for the number of periodic points of a compact group automorphism. Our arguments involve a modification of Linnik's Theorem, concerning small prime numbers in arithmetic progressions which lie in intervals.
We describe new arithmetic invariants for pairs of torus orbits on groups isogenous to an inner form of $\mathbf{PGL}_n$ over a number field. These invariants are constructed by studying the double quotient of a linear algebraic group by a maximal torus. Using the new invariants we significantly strengthen results towards the equidistribution of packets of periodic torus orbits on higher rank $S$-arithmetic quotients. Packets of periodic torus orbits are natural collections of torus orbits coming from a single adelic torus and are closely related to class groups of number fields. The distribut…
We discuss some numerical invariants of multidimensional shifts of finite type (SFTs) which are associated with the growth rates of the number of admissible finite configurations. Extending an unpublished example of Tsirelson, we show that growth complexities of the form $\exp(n^α)$ are possible for non-integer $α$'s. In terminology of Carvalho, such subshifts have entropy dimension $α$. The class of possible $α$'s are identified in terms of arithmetical classes of real numbers of Weihrauch and Zheng.

We prove a reducibility result for sl(2,R) quasi-periodic cocycles close to a constant elliptic matrix in ultra-differentiable classes, under an adapted arithmetic condition which extends the Brjuno-R{ü}ssmann condition in the analytic case. The proof is based on an elementary property of the fibered rotation number and deals with ultra-differentiable functions with a weighted Fourier norm. We also show that a weaker arithmetic condition is necessary for reducibility, and that it can be compared to a sufficient arithmetic condition.
We show that the dynamical degree of an (i.i.d) random sequence of dominant, rational self-maps on projective space is almost surely constant. We then apply this result to height growth and height counting problems in random orbits.
We study the repetition of patches in self-affine tilings in R^d. In particular, we study the existence and non-existence of arithmetic progressions. We first show that an arithmetic condition of the expansion map for a self-affine tiling implies the non-existence of certain one-dimensional arithmetic progressions. Next, we show that the existence of full-rank infinite arithmetic progressions, pure discrete dynamical spectrum, and limit periodicity are all equivalent for a certain class of self-affine tilings. We finish by giving a complete picture for the existence/non-existence of full-rank …
Let $n\geq 2$, and let $f$ be a polynomial of degree at least 2 with coefficients in a number field or a characteristic 0 function field $K$. We present two arithmetic applications of a recent theorem of Medvedev-Scanlon to the dynamics of the map $(f,...,f):\ (\bP^1_{K})^n\longrightarrow (\bP^1_K)^n$, namely the dynamical analogues of the Hasse principle and the Bombieri-Masser-Zannier height bound theorem. In particular, we prove that the Hasse principle holds when we intersect an orbit and a preperiodic subvariety, and that points in the intersection of a curve with the union of all periodi…

We prove that certain sequences of periodic orbits of the diagonal group in the space of lattices equidistribute. As an application we obtain new information regarding the sequence of best approximations to certain vectors with algebraic coordinates. In order to prove these results we generalize the seminal work of Eskin Mozes and Shah about the equidistribution of translates of periodic measures from the real case to the S-arithmetic case.
Let $S$ be a set of dominant rational self-maps on $\mathbb{P}^N$. We study the arithmetic and dynamical degrees of infinite sequences of $S$ obtained by sequentially composing elements of $S$ on the right and left. We then apply this insight to dynamical Galois theory.
We study dynamical systems induced by birational automorphisms on smooth cubic surfaces defined over a number field $K$. In particular we are interested in the product of non-commuting birational Geiser involutions of the cubic surface. We present results describing the sets of $K$ and $\bar{K}$-periodic points of the system, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a dynamical local-global property called strong residual periodicity. Finally, we give a dynamical result relating to the Mordell--Weil problem on cubic surfaces.
We establish an implication between two long-standing open problems in complex dynamics. The roots of the $n$-th Gleason polynomial $G_n\in\mathbb{Q}[c]$ comprise the $0$-dimensional moduli space of quadratic polynomials with an $n$-periodic critical point. $\mathrm{Per}_n(0)$ is the $1$-dimensional moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with an $n$-periodic critical point. We show that if $G_n$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$, then $\mathrm{Per}_n(0)$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{C}$. To do this, we exhibit a $\mathbb{Q}$-rational smooth point on a projective completion of…
We study the growth rate of the inclusion length of an almost periodic function. For a given a. p. function such growth rate depends on the algebraic structure of Fourier exponents, i. e. on how good they can be approximated by rational numbers. In additional, as appears from the definition, the inclusion length carries some information about the translation numbers (almost periods). Our result is a lower bound of the growth rate of the inclusion interval of a quasiperiodic function (theorem 3). Here we use methods from dimension theory. We do not assume anything about exponents, but rationall…
This is a text written for the Ennio De Giorgi Colloquio volume. It covers analogies between algebraic number theory and knot theory, analogies between analytic number theory and certain dynamical systems, and a report on our construction of dynamical systems for arithmetic schemes which realize some of these analogies.
We prove that there exists an open subset of the set of real-analytic Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of a closed surface in which diffeomorphisms exhibiting fast growth of the number of periodic points are dense. We also prove that there exists an open subset of the set of smooth area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a closed surface in which typical diffeomorphisms exhibit fast growth of the number of periodic points.
The main purpose of this work is to ascertain when arithmetic operations with periodic functions whose domains may not coincide with the whole real line preserve periodicity.
We establish the relationship between the growth rate of periodic orbits and the topological entropy for $C^1$ generic vector fields: this extends a classical result of Katok for $C^{1+α}(α>0)$ surface diffeomorphisms to $C^1$ generic vector fields of any dimension. The main difficulty comes from the existence of singularities and the shear of the flow.
We determine asymptotic growth rates for lengths of monochromatic arithmetic progressions in certain automatic sequences. In particular, we look at (one-sided) fixed points of aperiodic, primitive, bijective substitutions and spin substitutions, which are generalisations of the Thue--Morse and Rudin--Shapiro substitutions, respectively. For such infinite words, we show that there exists a subsequence $\left\{d_n\right\}$ of differences along which the maximum length $A(d_n)$ of a monochromatic arithmetic progression (with fixed difference $d_n$) grows at least polynomially in $d_n$. Explicit u…
The arithmetics of the frequency and of the rotation number play a fundamental role in the study of reducibility of analytic quasi-periodic cocycles which are sufficiently close to a constant. In this paper we show how to generalize previous works by L.H.Eliasson which deal with the diophantine case so as to implement a Brjuno-Russmann arithmetical condition both on the frequency and on the rotation number. Our approach adapts the Poschel-Russmann KAM method, which was previously used in the problem of linearization of vector fields, to the problem of reducing cocycles.
We introduce an algebraicity criteria. It has the following form: under certain conditions, an analytic subvariety of some algebriac variety over a global field $K$, if it contains many $K$-points, then it is algebraic over $K.$ This gives a way to show the transcendence of points via the transcendence of analytic subvarieties. Such a situation often appears when we have a dynamical system, because we can often produce infinitely many points from one point via iterates. Combing this criteria and the study of invariant subvarieties, we get some results on the transcendence in arithmetic dynamic…
Given any $K>0$, we construct two equivalent $C^2$ flows, one of which has positive topological entropy larger than $K$ and admits zero as the exponential growth of periodic orbits, in contrast, the other has zero topological entropy and super-exponential growth of periodic orbits. Moreover we establish a $C^{\infty}$ flow on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with super-exponential growth of periodic orbits, which is also equivalent to another flow with zero exponential growth of periodic orbits. On the other hand, any two dimensional flow has only zero topological entropy.
Asymptotic quadratic growth rates of saddle connections and families of periodic cylinders on translation tori with n marked points are studied. For any marking the existence of limits of the quadratic growth rate is shown using elementary methods (not Ratners theorem). We study the growth rate limit as function of the marking. We give precise formulas for this function in the case of two marked points and describe the sets where the growth function is maximal and continuous in any case. For rational two markings we calculate the index of the Veech group in SL(2,Z) using two different ways.
Let M be a compact manifold of dimension at least 2, Diff^r(M) be the space of C^r diffeomorphisms of M. Define for any diffeomorphism f in Diff^r(M) number of isolated periodic points of period n by P_n(f)=# {isolated x in M: f^n(x)=x}. Artin--Mazur proved that for a dense set of diffeomorphisms the number of periodic points P_n(f) growth at most exponentially fast in n. The author proved that there is an open set N \subset Diff^r(M) such that for a Baire generic set of diffeomorphisms the number of periodic points P_n(f) growth arbitrarily fast. Arnold posed a problem: Prove that diffeomorph…
The arithmetic triangular billiards are classically chaotic but have Poissonian energy level statistics, in ostensible violation of the BGS conjecture. We show that the length spectra of their periodic orbits divides into subspectra differing by the parity of the number of reflections from the triangle sides; in the quantum treatment that parity defines the reflection phase of the orbit contribution to the Gutzwiller formula for the energy level density. We apply these results to all 85 arithmetic triangles and establish the boundary conditions under which the quantum billiard is \textquotedbl…
Dispersal-induced growth (DIG) occurs when two populations with time-varying growth rates, each of which, when isolated, would become extinct, are able to persist and grow exponentially when dispersal among the two populations is present. This work provides a mathematical exploration of this surprising phenomenon, in the context of a deterministic model with periodic variation of growth rates, and characterizes the factors which are important in generating the DIG effect and the corresponding conditions on the parameters involved.
Suppose that $f \colon X \dashrightarrow X$ is a dominant rational self-map of a smooth projective variety defined over ${\overline{\mathbf Q}}$. Kawaguchi and Silverman conjectured that if $P \in X({\overline{\mathbf Q}})$ is a point with well-defined forward orbit, then the growth rate of the height along the orbit exists, and coincides with the first dynamical degree $λ_1(f)$ of $f$ if the orbit of $P$ is Zariski dense in $X$. In this note, we extend the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture to the setting of orbits of higher-dimensional subvarieties of $X$. We begin by defining a set of arithmeti…
We consider the one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator perturbed by a linear operator which is a polynomial of degree $2$ in $(x,-{\rm i}\partial_x)$, with coefficients quasi-periodically depending on time. By establishing the reducibility results, we describe the growth of Sobolev norms. In particular, the $t^{2s}-$polynomial growth of ${\mathcal H}^s-$norm is observed in this model if the original time quasi-periodic equation is reduced to a constant Stark Hamiltonian.
Periodic orbits are fundamental to understand the dynamics of nonlinear systems. In this work, we focus on two aspects of interest regarding periodic orbits, in the context of a dissipative mapping, derived from a prototype model of a non-linear driven oscillator with fast relaxation and a limit cycle. For this map, we show numerically the exponential growth of periodic orbits quantity in certain regions of the parameter space and provide an analytical bound for such growth rate, by making use of the transition matrix associated with a given periodic orbit. Furthermore, we give numerical evide…
We consider C^r-diffeomorphisms of a compact smooth manifold having a pair of robust heterodimensional cycles where r is a positive integer or infinity. We prove that if certain conditions about the signatures of non-linearities and Schwarzian derivatives of the transition maps are satisfied, then by giving C^r arbitrarily small perturbation, we can produce a periodic point at which the first return map in the center direction is C^r-flat. As a consequence, we will prove that C^r-generic diffeomorphisms in the neighborhood of the initial diffeomorphism exhibit super-exponential growth of numbe…
Consider a compact manifold M of dimension at least 2 and the space of C^r-smooth diffeomorphisms Diff^r(M). The classical Artin-Mazur theorem says that for a dense subset D of Diff^r(M) the number of isolated periodic points grows at most exponentially fast (call it the A-M property). We extend this result and prove that diffeomorphisms having only hyperbolic periodic points with the A-M property are dense in Diff^r(M). Our proof of this result is much simpler than the original proof of Artin-Mazur. The second main result is that the A-M property is not (Baire) generic. Moreover, in a Newhous…
For a non-arithmetic Veech surface, it is known that the set points having finite orbit under the Veech group, called the set of periodic points, is finite. However, few examples of these periodic point sets have been computed. In what follows, we compute new examples of periodic point sets for a family of non-hyperelliptic Veech surfaces with unbounded complexity and consider applications to classifying the holomorphic sections of certain surface bundles as well as applications to the study of infinitely generated Veech groups.
For any $ 2 \le r \le \infty$, $n\ge2$, we prove the existence of an open set $U$ of $C^r$-self-mappings of any $n$-manifold so that a generic map $f$ in $U$ displays a fast growth of the number of periodic points: the number of its $n$-periodic points grows as fast as asked. This complements the works of Martens-de Melo-van Strien, Kaloshin, Bonatti-D\' iaz-Fisher and Turaev, to give a full answer to questions asked by Smale in 1967, Bowen in 1978 and Arnold in 1989, for any manifold of any dimension and for any smoothness. Furthermore for any $1\le r<\infty$ and any $k\ge 0$, we prove the ex…
We study a single-species chemostat model with variable nutrient input and variable dilution rate with delayed (fixed) response in growth. The first goal of this article is to prove that persistence implies uniform persistence. Then we concentrate in the particular case with periodic nutrient input and same periodic dilution with delayed response in growth. We obtain a threshold for either the (uniform) persistence of the model or that the biomass of every solution tends to vanish. Furthermore, we prove that persistence is equivalent to the existence of a unique non-trivial periodic solution. …
Let $f:S^2\to S^2$ be a continuous map such that $deg f = d, |d|>1$. Suppose $f$ has two attracting fixed points denoted $N$ and $S$ and let $A=S^2\setminus \{N,S\}$. Assume that if a loop $γ\subset f^{-1}(A)$ is homotopically trivial in $A$, then $f(γ)$ is also homotopically trivial in $A$. Then, for all $n$, $f$ has at least $|d^n -1|$ fixed points.
For a family of 1-d quantum harmonic oscillator with a perturbation which is $C^2$ parametrized by $E\in{\mathcal I}\subset{\Bbb R}$ and quadratic on $x$ and $-{\rm i}\partial_x$ with coefficients quasi-periodically depending on time $t$, we show the reducibility (i.e., conjugation to time-independent) for a.e. $E$. As an application of reducibility, we describe the behaviors of solution in Sobolev space: -- Boundedness w.r.t. $t$ is always true for "most" $E\in{\mathcal I}$. -- For "generic" time-dependent perturbation, polynomial growth and exponential growth to infinity w.r.t. $t$ occur for…
Expansive algebraic Z^d-actions corresponding to ideals are characterized by the property that the complex variety of the ideal is disjoint from the multiplicative unit torus. For such actions it is known that the limit for the growth rate of periodic points exists and equals the entropy of the action. We extend this result to actions for which the complex variety intersects the multiplicative torus in a finite set. The main technical tool is the use of homoclinic points which decay rapidly enough to be summable.
Using a homologically link theorem in variational theory and iteration inequalities of Maslov-type index, we show the existence of a sequence of subharmonic solutions of non-autonomous Hamiltonian systems with the Hamiltonian functions satisfying some anisotropic growth conditions, i.e., the Hamiltonian functions may have simultaneously, in different components, superquadratic, subquadratic and quadratic behaviors. Moreover, we also consider the minimal period problem of some autonomous Hamiltonian systems with anisotropic growth.
We show that any dominant meromorphic self-map f of a compact Kaehler manifold X is an Artin-Mazur map. More precisely, if P_n(f) is the number of its isolated periodic points of period n (counted with multiplicity), then P_n(f) grows at most exponentially fast with respect to n and the exponential rate is at most equal to the algebraic entropy of f. Further estimates are given when X is a surface. Among the techniques introduced in this paper, the h-dimension of the density between two arbitrary positive closed currents on a compact Kaehler surface is obtained.
Peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation are revisited. Linearized evolution equations are derived for perturbations to the peaked periodic waves and linearized instability is proven both in $H^1$ and $W^{1,\infty}$ norms. Dynamics of perturbations in $H^1$ is related to the existence of two conserved quantities and is bounded in the full nonlinear system due to these conserved quantities. On the other hand, perturbations to the peaked periodic wave grow in $W^{1,\infty}$ norm and may blow up in a finite time in the nonlinear evolution of the Camassa-Holm equation.
Hematopoiesis is a complex biological process that leads to the production and regulation of blood cells. It is based upon differentiation of stem cells under the action of growth factors. A mathematical approach of this process is proposed to carry out explanation on some blood diseases, characterized by oscillations in circulating blood cells. A system of three differential equations with delay, corresponding to the cell cycle duration, is analyzed. The existence of a Hopf bifurcation for a positive steady-state is obtained through the study of an exponential polynomial characteristic equati…
