Periodic orbits are fundamental to understand the dynamics of nonlinear systems. In this work, we focus on two aspects of interest regarding periodic orbits, in the context of a dissipative mapping, derived from a prototype model of a non-linear driven oscillator with fast relaxation and a limit cycle. For this map, we show numerically the exponential growth of periodic orbits quantity in certain regions of the parameter space and provide an analytical bound for such growth rate, by making use of the transition matrix associated with a given periodic orbit. Furthermore, we give numerical evidence to support that optimal orbits, those that maximize time averages, are often unstable periodic orbits with low period, by numerically comparing their performance under a family of sinusoidal functions.
We review some recent results surrounding a general mechanism for producing chaotic behavior in periodically-kicked oscillators. The key geometric ideas are illustrated via a simple linear shear model.
We perform a detailed study of the dynamics of a nonlinear, one-dimensional oscillator driven by a periodic force under hysteretic damping, whose linear version was originally proposed and analyzed by Bishop in [1]. We first add a small quadratic stiffness term in the constitutive equation and construct the periodic solution of the problem by a systematic perturbation method, neglecting transient terms as $t\rightarrow \infty$. We then repeat the analysis replacing the quadratic by a cubic term, which does not allow the solutions to escape to infinity. In both cases, we examine the dependence …
In the bi-dimensional parameter space of driven oscillators, shrimp-shaped periodic windows are immersed in chaotic regions. For two of these oscillators, namely, Duffing and Josephson junction, we show that a weak harmonic perturbation replicates these periodic windows giving rise to parameter regions correspondent to periodic orbits. The new windows are composed of parameters whose periodic orbits have periodicity and pattern similar to stable and unstable periodic orbits already existent for the unperturbed oscillator. These features indicate that the reported replicate periodic windows are…
We consider a network of four non-identical chaotic Rossler oscillators. The possibility is shown of appearance of two-, three- and four-frequency invariant tori resulting from secondary quasi-periodic Hopf bifurcations and saddle-node homoclinic bifurcations of tori.
We examine a strange chaotic attractor and its unstable periodic orbits in case of one degree of freedom nonlinear oscillator with non symmetric potential. We propose an efficient method of chaos control stabilizing these orbits by a pulsive feedback technique. Discrete set of pulses enable us to transfer the system from one periodic state to another.
We show that a ring of phase oscillators coupled with transmission delays can be used as a pattern recognition system. The introduced model encodes patterns as stable periodic orbits. We present a detailed analysis of the underlying dynamics. In particular, we show that the system possesses a multitude of periodic solutions, prove stability results and present a bifurcation analysis. Furthermore, we show successful recognition results using artificial patterns and speech recordings.
A general stability analysis is presented for the determination of the transition from incoherent to coherent behavior in an ensemble of globally coupled, heterogeneous, continuous-time dynamical systems. The formalism allows for the simultaneous presence of ensemble members exhibiting chaotic and periodic behavior, and, in a special case, yields the Kuramoto model for globally coupled periodic oscillators described by a phase. Numerical experiments using different types of ensembles of Lorenz equations with a distribution of parameters are presented.
Large systems of coupled oscillators subjected to a periodic external drive occur in many situations in physics and biology. Here the simple, paradigmatic case of equal-strength, all-to-all sine-coupling of phase oscillators subject to a sinusoidal external drive is considered. The stationary states and their stability are determined. Using the stability information and numerical experiments, parameter space phase diagrams showing when different types of system behavior apply are constructed, and the bifurcations marking transitions between different types of behavior are delineated. The analy…
The problem of synchronization of coupled self-oscillators by external force is studied. The charts of Lyapunov's exponents in the "frequency - amplitude" parameter plane are obtained within the framework of the phase approximation. We identified the characteristic configurations of the domains of complete synchronization, two- and three-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations and different variants of partial synchronization of oscillators by an external force. The differences between regimes of mode locking and beats of partial oscillators are revealed and discussed. To visualize and analyze t…
We consider entrainment by periodic force of limit cycles which are close to the homoclinic bifurcation. Taking as a physical example the nanoscale spin-torque oscillator in the LC circuit, we develop the general description of the situation in which the frequency of the stable periodic orbit in the autonomous system is highly sensitive to minor variations of the parameter, and derive explicit expressions for the strongly deformed borders of the resonance regions (Arnold tongues) in the parameter space of the problem. It turns out that proximity to homoclinic bifurcations hinders synchronizati…
The effect of the shape of six different periodic forces and second periodic forces on the onset of horseshoe chaos are studied both analytically and numerically in a Duffing oscillator. The external periodic forces considered are sine wave, square wave, symmetric saw-tooth wave, asymmetric saw-tooth wave, rectified sine wave, and modulus of sine wave. An analytical threshold condition for the onset of horseshoe chaos is obtained in the Duffing oscillator driven by various periodic forces using the Melnikov method. Melnikov threshold curve is drawn in a parameter space. For all the forces exce…
We investigate the characteristics of temporal phase locking states observed in the route to phase synchronization. It is found that before phase synchronization there is a periodic phase synchronization state characterized by periodic appearance of temporal phase locking state and that the state leads to local negativeness in one of the vanishing Lyapunov exponents. By taking a statistical measure, we present the evidences of the phenomenon in unidirectionally and mutually coupled chaotic oscillators, respectively. And it is qualitatively discussed that the phenomenon is described by a nonuni…
The electronic model of Van der Pol oscillator with piecewise linear V-I--characteristics of nonlinear element is proposed. It is carried out the experimental investigations of behaviour of the Van der Pol oscillator under external periodic force. The parameter plane "the amplitude of external force -- the frequency of external force" for the dynamical regimes of the oscillator is experimentally plotted. It is shown in experiments and numerical simulations that transition to chaos in the oscillator takes place through the period doubling cascade. It is revealed that the internal structure of t…
We report the synchronization behavior in a one-dimensional chain of identical limit cycle oscillators coupled to a mass-spring load via a force relation. We consider the effect of periodic parametric modulation on the final synchronization states of the system. Two types of external parametric excitations are investigated numerically: periodic modulation of the stiffness of the inertial oscillator and periodic excitation of the frequency of the self-oscillatory element. We show that the synchronization scenarios are ruled not only by the choice of parameters of the excitation force but depend…
Summary: A system of autonomous ordinary differential equations depending on a small parameter is considered such that the unperturbed system has an invariant manifold of periodic solutions that is not normally hyperbolic but is normally nondegenerate. The bifurcation function whose zeros are the bifurcation points for families of perturbed periodic solutions is determined. This result is applied to find the periodic solutions near resonance for a two degree of freedom mechanical system modeling a rotor interacting with an elastic support.
We show how a variety of stable spatio-temporal periodic patterns can be created in 2D-lattices of coupled oscillators with non-homogeneous coupling delays. A "hybrid dispersion relation" is introduced, which allows studying the stability of time-periodic patterns analytically in the limit of large delay. The results are illustrated using the FitzHugh-Nagumo coupled neurons as well as coupled limit cycle (Stuart-Landau) oscillators.
The dynamics of mechanical systems such as turbomachinery with multiple blades are often modeled by arrays of periodically driven coupled nonlinear oscillators. It is known that such systems may have multiple stable vibrational modes, and transitions between them may occur under the influence of random factors. A methodology for finding most probable escape paths and estimating the transition rates in the small noise limit is developed and applied to a collection of arrays of coupled monostable oscillators with cubic nonlinearity, small damping, and harmonic external forcing. The methodology i…
The bifurcation structure of coupled periodically driven double-well Duffing oscillators is investigated as a function of the strength of the driving force $f$ and its frequency $Ω$. We first examine the stability of the steady state in linear response, and classify the different types of bifurcation likely to occur in this model. We then explore the complex behaviour associated with these bifurcations numerically. Our results show many striking departures from the behaviour of coupled driven Duffing Oscillators with single well-potentials, as characterised by Kozlowski et al \cite{k1}. In add…
Considering an array of spin torque transfer nano oscillators (STNOs), we have investigated the synchronization property of the system under the action of a common periodically driven applied external magnetic field by numerically analyzing the underlying system of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski (LLGS) equations for the macro-spin variables. We find the novel result that the applied external magnetic field can act as a medium to induce synchronization of periodic oscillations, both in-phase and anti-phase, even without coupling through spin current, thereby leading to the exciting possibi…
Kerr oscillators are model systems which have practical applications in nonlinear optics. Optical Kerr effect i.e. interaction of optical waves with nonlinear medium with polarizability $χ^{(3)}$ is the basic phenomenon needed to explain for example the process of light transmission in fibers and optical couplers. In this paper we analyze the two Kerr oscillators coupler and we show that there is a possibility to control the dynamics of this system, especially by switching its dynamics from periodic to chaotic motion and vice versa. Moreover the switching between two different stable periodic …
The conditions are discussed for which an ensemble of interacting oscillators may demonstrate the Landau-Hopf scenario of successive birth of multi-frequency quasi-periodic motions. A model is proposed that is a network of five globally coupled oscillators characterized by controlled degree of activation of individual oscillators. Illustrations are given for successive birth of tori of increasing dimension via quasi-periodic Hopf bifurcations.
Discrete fractional order chaotic systems extends the memory capability to capture the discrete nature of physical systems. In this research, the memristive discrete fractional order chaotic system is introduced. The dynamics of the system was studied using bifurcation diagrams and phase space construction. The system was found chaotic with fractional order $0.465<n<0.562$. The dynamics of the system under different values makes it useful as a switch. Controllers were developed for the tracking control of the two systems to different trajectories. The effectiveness of the designed controllers …
We study two-cluster solutions of an ensemble of generic limit-cycle oscillators in the vicinity of a Hopf bifurcation, i.e. Stuart-Landau oscillators, with a nonlinear global coupling. This coupling leads to conserved mean-field oscillations acting back on the individual oscillators as a forcing. A reduction to two effective equations makes a linear stability analysis of the cluster solutions possible. These equations exhibit a $π$-rotational symmetry, leading to a complex bifurcation structure and a wide variety of solutions. In fact, the principal bifurcation structure resembles that of a 2…
We study synchronization of locally coupled noisy phase oscillators which move diffusively in a one-dimensional ring. Together with the disordered and the globally synchronized states, the system also exhibits several wave-like states which display local order. We use a statistical description valid for a large number of oscillators to show that for any finite system there is a critical spatial diffusion above which all wave-like solutions become unstable. Through Langevin simulations, we show that the transition to global synchronization is mediated by the relative size of attractor basins as…
We study scattering of a periodic wave in a string on two lumped oscillators attached to it. The equations can be represented as a driven (by the incident wave) dissipative (due to radiation losses) system of delay differential equations of neutral type. Nonlinearity of oscillators makes the scattering non-reciprocal: the same wave is transmitted differently in two directions. Periodic regimes of scattering are analysed approximately, using amplitude equation approach. We show that this setup can act as a nonreciprocal modulator via Hopf bifurcations of the steady solutions. Numerical simulati…
This paper addresses the behavior of large systems of heterogeneous, globally coupled oscillators each of which is described by the generic Landau-Stuart equation, which incorporates both phase and amplitude dynamics of individual oscillators. One goal of our paper is to investigate the effect of a spread in the amplitude growth parameter of the oscillators and of the effect of a homogeneous nonlinear frequency shift. Both of these effects are of potential relevance to recently reported experiments. Our second goal is to gain further understanding of the macroscopic system dynamics at large co…
We analyze a pair of delay-coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators exhibiting in-out intermittency as a part of the generating mechanism of extreme events. We study in detail the characteristics of in-out intermittency and identify the invariant subsets involved --- a saddle fixed point and a saddle periodic orbit --- neither of which are chaotic as in the previously reported cases of in-out intermittency. Based on the analysis of a periodic attractor possessing in-out dynamics, we can characterize the approach to the invariant synchronization manifold and the spiralling out to the saddle periodic…
The dynamics of a non-autonomous oscillator in which the phase and frequency of the external force depend on the dynamical variable is studied. Such a control of the phase and frequency of the external force leads to the appearance of complex chaotic dynamics in the behavior of oscillator. A hierarchy of various periodic and chaotic oscillations is observed. The paper studies the structure of the space of control parameters. It is shown that in the dynamics of the system there are oscillatory modes similar to those of a non-autonomous oscillator with a potential in the form of a periodic funct…
We designed and developed a master-slave electronic oscillatory system (based on the 555-timer IC working in the astable mode), and investigated its dynamic behavior regarding synchronization. For that purpose we measured the rotation numbers corresponding to the phase-locking rhythms achieved in a large set of values of the normalized forcing frequency (NFF) and of the coupling strength between the master and the slave oscillators. In particular we were interested in the system behavior in the strong-coupling limit, because such problem has not been extensively studied from an experimental pe…
We study the nature of motion in a 3D potential composed of perturbed elliptic oscillators. Our technique is to use the results obtained from the 2D potential in order to find the initial conditions generating regular or chaotic orbits in the 3D potential. Both 2D and 3D potentials display exact periodic orbits together with extended chaotic regions. Numerical experiments suggest, that the degree of chaos increases rapidly, as the energy of the test particle increases. About 97% of the phase plane of the 2D system is covered by chaotic orbits for large energies. The regular or chaotic characte…
A model of two self-sustained oscillators interacting through memristive coupling is studied. Memristive coupling is realized by using a cubic memristor model. Numerical simulation is combined with theoretical analysis by means of quasi-harmonic reduction. It is shown that specifics of the memristor nonlinearity results in appearance of infinitely many equilibrium points, which form a line of equilibria in the phase space of the system under study. It is established that possibility to observe the effect of phase locking in the considered system depends both on parameter values and initial con…
Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally Cooperative effects of periodic force and noise in globally coupled systems are studied using a nonlinear diffusion equation for the number density. The amplitude of the order parameter oscillation is enhanced in an intermediate range of noise strength for a globally coupled bistable system, and the order parameter oscillation is entrained to the external periodic force in an intermediate range of noise strength. These enhancement phenomena of the response of the order parameter in the deterministic equations are interpreted as stocha…
We present an analytical calculation of periodic orbits in the homogeneous quartic oscillator potential. Exploiting the properties of the periodic Lam{é} functions that describe the orbits bifurcated from the fundamental linear orbit in the vicinity of the bifurcation points, we use perturbation theory to obtain their evolution away from the bifurcation points. As an application, we derive an analytical semiclassical trace formula for the density of states in the separable case, using a uniform approximation for the pitchfork bifurcations occurring there, which allows for full semiclassical qu…
Exponential growth of thermal out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) is an indicator of a possible gravity dual, and a simple toy quantum model showing the growth is being looked for. We consider a system of two harmonic oscillators coupled nonlinearly with each other, and numerically observe that the thermal OTOC grows exponentially in time. The system is well-known to be classically chaotic, and is a reduction of Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The exponential growth is certified because the growth exponent (quantum Lyapunov exponent) of the thermal OTOC is well matched with the classical Lyapunov exp…
The global structure of the Isochrons and the corresponding Phase Response Curves are, for the first time, investigated and numerically computed for the fundamental photonic oscillator consisted of an Optically Injected Laser. Their crucial role in the synchronization dynamics under a periodic modulation of the injection beam is shown, along with their capability for providing conditions for stable phase-locking and periodic outputs with discrete equidistant spectra in the form of frequency combs.
The growth rate of material interfaces is an important proxy for mixing and reaction rates in fluid dynamics, and can also be used to identify regions of coherence. Estimating such growth rates can be difficult, since they depend on detailed properties of the velocity field, such as its derivatives, that are hard to measure directly. When an experiment gives only sparse trajectory data, it is natural to encode planar trajectories as mathematical braids, which are topological objects that contain information on the mixing characteristics of the flow, in particular through their action on topolo…
We consider dynamics of a quantum nonlinear oscillator subjected to non-Markovian pumping. Models of this kind can describe formation of exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensates in course of stimulated scattering and relaxation of reservoir excitons. Using the Markovian embedding techniques, we obtain stochastic differential equations of motion with an additional degree of freedom corresponding to dynamical memory. It is shown that the oscillator asymptotically tends to the intrinsically non-Markovian stable fixed point corresponding to constant product of oscillator amplitude and modulo of…
A non-${\cal{PT}}$-symmetric Hamiltonian system of a Duffing oscillator coupled to an anti-damped oscillator with a variable angular frequency is shown to admit periodic solutions. The result implies that ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetry of a Hamiltonian system with balanced loss and gain is not necessary in order to admit periodic solutions. The Hamiltonian describes a multistable dynamical system - three out of five equilibrium points are stable. The dynamics of the model is investigated in detail by using perturbative as well as numerical methods and shown to admit periodic solutions in some regions i…
