We describe the representation theory of C*-crossed-products of a unital C*-algebra A by the cyclic group of order 2. We prove that there are two main types of irreducible representations for the crossed-product: those whose restriction to A is irreducible and those who are the sum of two unitarily unequivalent representations of A. We characterize each class in term of the restriction of the representations to the fixed point C*-subalgebra of A. We apply our results to compute the K-theory of several crossed-products of the free group on two generators.
Let $(A,α)$ be a system consisting of a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and an automorphism $α$ of $A$. We describe the primitive ideal space of the partial-isometric crossed product $A\times_α^{\textrm{piso}}\mathbb{N}$ of the system by using its realization as a full corner of a classical crossed product and applying some results of Williams and Echterhoff.
A continuous family of non-outer conjugate aperiodic automorphisms whose crossed-products are all isomorphic is given on every interpolated free group factor. An explicit "duality" relationship between compact co-commutative Kac algebra (minimal) free product actions and free shift actions is also discussed.
We construct centrally large subalgebras in crossed products of $C (X, D)$ by automorphisms in which $D$ is simple, $X$ is compact metrizable, the automorphism induces a minimal homeomorphism of $X$, and a mild technical assumption holds. We use this construction to prove structural properties of the crossed product, such as (tracial) $Z$-stability, stable rank one, real rank zero, and pure infiniteness, in a number of examples. Our examples are not accessible via methods based on finite Rokhlin dimension, either because $D$ is not $Z$-stable or because $X$ is infinite dimensional.
We introduce the tracial Rokhlin property for automorphisms of stably finite simple unital C*-algebras containing enough projections. This property is formally weaker than the various Rokhlin properties considered by Herman and Ocneanu, Kishimoto, and Izumi. Our main results are as follows. Consider a stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and an automorphism of it which has the tracial Rokhlin property. Suppose the algebra has real rank zero and stable rank one, and suppose that the order on projections over the algebra is determined by traces. Then the crossed product by the automorphism al…
We introduce the tracial quasi-Rokhlin property for an automorphism alpha of a unital C*-algebra A, which is not assumed to be simple. We show that under suitable hypotheses, the associated crossed product C*-algebra C*(Z,A,alpha) is simple, and there is a bijection between the space of tracial states on C*(Z,A,alpha)$ and the alpha-invariant tracial states on A. We show that, for a minimal dynamical system (X,h) and a simple, separable, unital C*-algebra A, the automorphism beta which extends the action of h on C(X) has the tracial quasi-Rokhlin property, and hence that C*(Z,C(X,A),beta) has …
Given a quasi-special endomorphism $ρ$ of a C*-algebra A with nontrivial center, we study an extension problem for automorphisms of A to a minimal cross-product B of A by $ρ$. Exploiting some aspects of the underlying generalized Doplicher-Roberts duality theory based on Pimsner algebras, an obstruction to the existence of such extensions is found and described in terms of sections of a suitable group bundle.
For partial automorphisms of $C^*$-algebras, Takai-Takesaki crossed product duality tends to fail, in proportion to the extent to which the partial automorphism is not an automorphism.
Let $X$ be a Cantor set, and let $A$ be a unital separable simple amenable $C$*-algebra with tracial rank zero which satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem, we use $C(X,A)$ to denote the set of all continuous functions from $X$ to $A$, let $α$ be an automorphism on $C(X,A)$. Suppose that $C(X,A)$ is $α$-simple and $[α]=[\mbox{id}_{1\otimes A}]$ in $KL(1\otimes A,1\otimes A)$, we show that $C(X,A)\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z}$ has tracial rank zero.
Building on an argument by Toms and Winter, we show that if $A$ is a simple, separable, unital, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable C*-algebra, then the crossed product of $C(X,A)$ by an automorphism is also Z-stable, provided that the automorphism induces a minimal homeomorphism on $X$. As a consequence, we observe that if $A$ is nuclear and purely infinite then the crossed product is a Kirchberg algebra.
An action of Z^l by automorphisms of a k-graph induces an action of Z^l by automorphisms of the corresponding k-graph C*-algebra. We show how to construct a (k+l)-graph whose C*-algebra coincides with the crossed product of the original k-graph algebra by Z^l. We then investigate the structure of the crossed-product C*-algebra.
We study the C*-algebra crossed-product of the closed unit disk by the action of one of its conformal automorphisms. After classifying the conformal automorphisms up to topological conjugacy, we investigate, for each class, the irreducible representations of the full C*-crossed-products, and derive their spectrum and a complete desciption of the algebras.
When S is a discrete subsemigroup of a discrete group G such that G = S^{-1} S, it is possible to extend circle-valued multipliers from S to G; to dilate (projective) isometric representations of S to (projective) unitary representations of G; and to dilate/extend actions of S by injective endomorphisms of a C*-algebra to actions of G by automorphisms of a larger C*-algebra. These dilations are unique provided they satisfy a minimality condition. The (twisted) semigroup crossed product corresponding to an action of S is isomorphic to a full corner in the (twisted) crossed product by the dilate…
We compare the algebras of the quantum automorphism group of finite-dimensional C$^\ast$-algebra $B$, which includes the quantum permutation group $S_N^+$, where $N = \dim B$. We show that matrix amplification and crossed products by trace-preserving actions by a finite Abelian group $Γ$ lead to isomorphic $\ast$-algebras. This allows us to transfer various properties such as inner unitarity, Connes embeddability, and strong $1$-boundedness between the various algebras associated with these quantum groups.
We bound the nuclear dimension of crossed products associated to some partial actions of finite groups or $\mathbb{Z}$ on finite dimensional locally compact Hausdorff second countable spaces. Our results apply to globalizable partial actions, finite group partial actions, minimal partial automorphisms, and partial automorphisms acting on zero-dimensional spaces, or a class of one dimensional spaces, containing $1$-dimensional CW complexes. This extends work on global systems by Hirshberg and Wu.
We describe both the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras and their Toeplitz versions, as crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by partial automorphisms. In the latter case, the commutative algebra has, as its spectrum, the union of the Cantor set and a copy the set of natural numbers N, fitted together in such a way that N is an open dense subset. The partial automorphism is induced by a map that acts like the odometer map on the Cantor set while being the translation by one on N. From this we deduce, by taking quotients, that the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras are isomorphic to the (classical) crossed…
Based on the fact that, for a subfactor $N$ of a II$_1$ factor $M,$ the first non-trivial Jones index is 2 and then $M$ is decomposed as the crossed product of $N$ by an outer action of ${\mathbb{Z}}_2,$ we study pairs $ \{N, uNu^* \}$ from a view point of entropy for two subalgebras of $M$ with a connection to the entropy for automorphisms, where the inclusion of II$_1$ factors $ N \subset M$ is given as $M$ is the crossed product of $N$ by a finite group of outer automorphisms and $u$ is a unitary in $M.$
Suppose $Γ^{+}$ is the positive cone of a totally ordered abelian group $Γ$, and $(A,Γ^{+},α)$ is a system consisting of a $C^*$-algebra $A$, an action $α$ of $Γ^{+}$ by extendible endomorphisms of $A$. We prove that the partial-isometric crossed product $A\times_α^{\piso}Γ^{+}$ is a full corner in the subalgebra of $Ł(\ell^{2}(Γ^{+},A))$, and that if $α$ is an action by automorphisms of $A$, then it is the isometric-crossed product $(B_{Γ^{+}}\otimes A)\times^{\iso}Γ^{+}$, which is therefore a full corner in the usual crossed product of system by a group of automorphisms. We use these realiza…
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ by properly outer $*$-automorphisms. In this paper we study the containment $M \subseteq M\rtimes_αG$ of $M$ inside the crossed product. We characterize the intermediate von Neumann algebras, extending earlier work of other authors in the factor case. We also determine the $M$-bimodules that are closed in the Bures topology and which coincide with the $w^*$-closed ones under a mild hypothesis on $G$. We use these results to obtain a general version of Mercer's theorem concerning the extension of certain isometric $w^*$-continuous …
Let A be an exact C^*-algebra, let G be a locally compact group, and let (A,G,α) be a C*-dynamical system. Each automorphism α_g induces a spatial automorphism Ad_{\lamba_g} on the reduced crossed product A\times_αG. In this paper we examine the question, first raised by E. Stormer, of when the topological entropies of α_g and Ad_{α_g} coincide. This had been answered by N. Brown for the particular case of discrete abelian groups. Using different methods, we extend his result to a wider class of groups called locally [FIA]^-. This class includes all abelian groups, both discrete and continuous…
We introduce a method to study C*-algebras possessing an action of the circle group, from the point of view of its internal structure and its K-theory. Under relatively mild conditions our structure Theorem shows that any C*-algebra, where an action of the circle is given, arises as the result of a construction that generalizes crossed products by the group of integers. Such a generalized crossed product construction is carried out for any partial automorphism of a C*-algebra, where by a partial automorphism we mean an isomorphism between two ideals of the given algebra. Our second main result…
We find the range of a trace on the $K_0$ group of a crossed product by a time-$t$ automorphism of a mapping torus. We also find a formula to compute the Voiculescu-Brown entropy for such an automorphism. By specializing to the commutative setting, we prove that the crossed products by minimal time-t homeomorphisms of suspensions built over strongly orbit equivalent Cantor minimal systems have isomorphic Elliott invariants. As an application of our results we give examples of dynamical systems on (compact metric) connected 1-dimensional spaces which are not flip conjugate (because of different…
Green's theorem gives a Morita equivalence $C_0(G/H,A)\rtimes G\sim A\rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H$ of a locally compact group $G$ acting on a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We prove an analogue of Green's theorem in the case $G=\mathbb{Z}$, where the automorphism generating the action is replaced by a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule.
We study the crossed product $C^*$-algebra associated to injective endomorphisms, which turns out to be equivalent to study the crossed product by the dilated autormorphism. We prove that the dilation of the Bernoulli $p$-shift endomorphism is topologically free. As a consequence, we have a way to twist any endomorphism of a $\D$-absorbing $C^*$-algebra into one whose dilated automorphism is essentially free and have the same $K$-theory map than the original one. This allows us to construct purely infinite crossed products $C^*$-algebras with diverse ideal structures.
An automorphism $β$ of a $k$-graph $Λ$ induces a crossed product $C^* ( Λ) \rtimes_β\mathbb{Z}$ which is isomorphic to a $(k+1)$-graph algebra $C^* ( Λ\times_β\mathbb{Z})$. In this paper we show how this process interacts with $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras which have been twisted by an element of their second cohomology group. This analysis is done using a long exact sequence in cohomology associated to this data. We conclude with some examples
We study C*-algebra endomorphims which are special in a weaker sense w.r.t. the notion introduced by Doplicher and Roberts. We assign to such endomorphisms a geometrical invariant, representing a cohomological obstruction for them to be special in the usual sense. Moreover, we construct the crossed product of a C*-algebra by the action of the dual of a (nonabelian, noncompact) group of vector bundle automorphisms. These crossed products supply a class of examples for such generalized special endomorphisms.
We decompose the crossed product functor for actions of crossed modules of locally compact groups on C*-algebras into more elementary constructions: taking crossed products by group actions and fibres in C*-algebras over topological spaces. For this, we extend the theory of partial crossed products from groups to crossed modules; extend Takesaki-Takai duality to Abelian crossed modules; show that equivalent crossed modules have equivalent categories of actions on C*-algebras; and show that certain crossed modules are automatically equivalent to Abelian crossed modules.
In this paper we define a Rokhlin property for automorphisms of non-unital C*-algebras and for endomorphisms. We show that the crossed product of a C*-algebra by a Rokhlin automorphism preserves absorption of a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra, and use this result to deduce that the same result holds for crossed products by endomorphisms in the sense of Stacey. This generalizes earlier results of the second named author and W. Winter.
Laca constructed a minimal automorphic dilation for every semigroup dynamical system arising from an action of an Ore semigroup by injective endomorphisms of a unital $C^*$-algebra. Here we show that the semigroup crossed product with its action by inner endomorphisms given by the implementing isometries has as minimal automorphic dilation the group crossed product of the original dilation. Applications include recent examples studied by Cuntz and the second named author.
Full C*-crossed products by actions of locally compact groups are characterized via the existence of suitable maximal coactions, in analogy with Landstad's characterization of reduced crossed products.
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ by $*$-automorphisms. We characterize (in terms of the dynamics) when the inclusion $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{A} \rtimes_r G$ has a unique conditional expectation, and when it has a unique pseudo-expectation (in the sense of Pitts). Likewise for the inclusion $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{A} \rtimes G$. As an application, we (slightly) strengthen results of Kishimoto and Archbold-Spielberg concerning $C^*$-simplicity of $\mathcal{A} \rtimes_r G$.
We discuss the crossed product by the dual action of the circle on the crossed product of a C*-algebra A by a Hilbert C*-bimodule X. When X is an A-A Morita equivalence bimodule, the double crossed product is shown to be Morita equivalent to the C*-algebra A.
We develop a theory of crossed products by "actions" of Hecke pairs $(G, Γ)$, motivated by applications in non-abelian $C^*$-duality. Our approach gives back the usual crossed product construction whenever $G / Γ$ is a group and retains many of the aspects of crossed products by groups. In this first of two articles we lay the $^*$-algebraic foundations of these crossed products by Hecke pairs and we explore their representation theory.
We prove a classification result for a large class of noncommutative Bernoulli crossed products $(P,ϕ)^Λ\rtimes Λ$ without almost periodic states. Our results improve the classification results from [1], where only Bernoulli crossed products built with almost periodic states could be treated. We show that the family of factors $(P,ϕ)^Λ\rtimes Λ$ with $P$ an amenable factor, $ϕ$ a weakly mixing state (i.e. a state for which the modular automorphism group is weakly mixing) and $Λ$ belonging to a large class of groups, is classified by the group $Λ$ and the action $Λ\curvearrowright (P, ϕ)^Λ$, up…
There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product (though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra), that every Stacey crossed product is an Exel crossed product, and answer some questions raised by Ionescu and Muhly. While this manuscript is not yet in its final form(s) several people have already used our results, so we are posting it now.
We study a relationship between the ultraproduct of a crossed product von Neumann algebra and the crossed product of an ultraproduct von Neumann algebra. As an application, the continuous core of an ultraproduct von Neumann algebra is described.
We associate a pro-C*-algebra to a pro-C*-correspondence and show that this construction generalizes the construction of crossed products by Hilbert pro-C*-bimodules and the construction of pro-C*-crossed products by strong bounded automorphisms.
We prove that every AF-algebra is isomorphic to a crossed product of a commutative AF-algebra by a partial automorphism. The case of UHF-algebras is treated in detail.
In this paper, we define the notions of full pro-$C^{*}$-crossed product, respectively reduced pro-$C^{*}$-crossed product, of a pro-$C^{*}$-algebra $A[τ_Γ] $ by a strong bounded action $α$ of a locally compact group $G$ and investigate some their properties.
Let $Γ^{+}$ be the positive cone of a totally ordered abelian discrete group $Γ$, and $α$ an action of $Γ^{+}$ by extendible endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We prove that the partial-isometric crossed product $A\times_α^{\textrm{piso}}Γ^{+}$ is a full corner of a group crossed product $\mathcal{B}\times_βΓ$, where $\mathcal{B}$ is a subalgebra of $\ell^{\infty}(Γ,A)$ generated by a collection of faithful copies of $A$, and the action $β$ on $\mathcal{B}$ is induced by shift on $\ell^{\infty}(Γ,A)$. We then use this realization to show that $A\times_α^{\textrm{piso}}Γ^{+}$ has an essentia…
There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product, though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra. We apply this result to a variety of Exel systems, including those associated to shifts on the path spaces of directed graphs.
We define and study fibrations of topological groupoids. We interpret a groupoid fibration L->H with fibre G as an action of H on G by groupoid equivalences. Our main result shows that a crossed product for an action of L is isomorphic to an iterated crossed product first by G and then by H. Here groupoid action means a Fell bundle over the groupoid, and crossed product means the section C*-algebra.
In this paper we investigate the interrelation between the topological freedom of partial actions of discrete groups and faithful representations of partial crossed products.
We consider a family of dynamical systems (A,alpha,L) in which alpha is an endomorphism of a C*-algebra A and L is a transfer operator for α. We extend Exel's construction of a crossed product to cover non-unital algebras A, and show that the C*-algebra of a locally finite graph can be realised as one of these crossed products. When A is commutative, we find criteria for the simplicity of the crossed product, and analyse the ideal structure of the crossed product.
This is a survey which discusses the isomorphism problem for both C* and smooth crossed products by minimal diffeomorphisms. For C* crossed products, examples demonstrate the failure of the obvious analog of the Giordano-Putnam-Skau Theorem on minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor set. For smooth crossed products, there are many open problems.
For a given discrete group $G$, we apply results of Kirchberg on exact and injective tensor products of $C^*$-algebras to give an explicit description of the minimal exact correspondence crossed-product functor and the maximal injective crossed-product functor for $G$ in the sense of Buss, Echterhoff and Willett. In particular, we show that the former functor dominates the latter.
We consider Exel's new construction of a crossed product of a C*-algebra A by an endomorphism α. We prove that this crossed product is universal for an appropriate family of covariant representations, and we show that it can be realised as a relative Cuntz-Pimsner algbera. We describe a necessary and sufficient condition for the canonical map from A into the crossed product to be injective, and present several examples to demonstrate the scope of this result. We also prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem for the crossed product.
In this article we study analogues of the weak expectation property of discrete group C*-algebras and their crossed products, in the discrete quantum group setting, i.e., discrete quantum group C*-algebras and crossed products of C*-algebras with amenable discrete quantum groups.
We construct the crossed product of a C(X)-algebra by an endomorphism, in such a way that it becomes induced by a Hilbert C(X)-bimodule. Furthermore we introduce the notion of C(X)-category, and discuss relationships with crossed products and duality for compact groups.
In this paper we introduce the crossed product construction for a discrete group action on an operator system. In analogy to the work of E. Katsoulis and C. Ramsey, we describe three canonical crossed products arising from such a dynamical system. We describe how these crossed product constructions behave under $G$-equivariant maps, tensor products, and the canonical $C^*$-covers. We show that hyperrigidity is preserved under two of the three crossed products. Finally, using A. Kavruk's notion of an operator system that detects $C^*$-nuclearity, we give a negative answer to a question on opera…
We provide a general description of the KMS states for flows whose fixed point algebra satisfies a certain regularity condition. This is the applied to crossed products by discrete groups, and in particular to certain flows on crossed products by discrete abelian groups where the methods can be combined with spectral analysis for abelian automrphism groups.
We consider a family of Hecke C*-algebras which can be realised as crossed products by semigroups of endomorphisms. We show by dilating representations of the semigroup crossed product that the category of representations of the Hecke algebra is equivalent to the category of continuous unitary representations of a totally disconnected locally compact group.
We describe simplicity of the Stacey crossed product A\times_β\N in terms of conditions of the endomorphism β. Then, we use a characterization of the graph C*-algebras C*(E) as the Stacey crossed product C*(E)^γ\times_{β_E}\N to study its ideal properties, in terms of the (non-classical) C*-dynamical system (C*(E)^γ, β_E). Finally, we give sufficient conditions for the Stacey crossed product A\times_β\N being a purely infinite simple C*-algebra.
We show that if $(X.A)$ and $(Y,B)$ are two isomorphic Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast} $-bimodules, then the crossed product $A\times_{X}\mathbb{Z}$ of $A$ by $X$ and the crossed product $B\times_{Y}\mathbb{Z}$ of $B$ by $Y$ are isomorphic as pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebras. We also prove a property of "associativity" between " $\otimes_{\min}$" and "$\times_{X}$" $\ $as well as " $\otimes_{\max}$" and "$\times_{X}$". As an application of these results we show that the crossed product of a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$ -algebra $A$ by a full Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast}$-bimodule $X$ is a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebra.
We compute the K-theory for C*-algebras naturally associated with rings of integers in number fields. The main ingredient is a duality theorem for arbitrary global fields. It allows us to identify the crossed product arising from affine transformations on the finite adeles with the analogous crossed product algebra over the infinite adele space.
Partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras and the associated crossed products have been studied by Exel and McClanahan. We characterise these crossed products in terms of the spectral subspaces of the dual coaction, generalising and simplifying a theorem of Exel for single partial automorphisms. We then use this characterisation to identify the Cuntz algebras and the Toeplitz algebras of Nica as crossed products by partial actions.
We prove that the crossed product A x G of a separable, unital, quasidiagonal C*- algebra A by a discrete, countable, amenable, maximally almost periodic group G is quasidiagonal, provided that the action is almost periodic.
