This is a survey which discusses the isomorphism problem for both C* and smooth crossed products by minimal diffeomorphisms. For C* crossed products, examples demonstrate the failure of the obvious analog of the Giordano-Putnam-Skau Theorem on minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor set. For smooth crossed products, there are many open problems.
For minimal unique ergodic diffeomorphisms $α_n$ of $S^{2n+1} (n>0)$ and $α_m$ of $S^{2m+1}(m>0)$, the $C^*$-crossed product algebra $C(S^{2n+1})\rtimes_{α_n} \mathbb{Z}$ is isomorphic to $C(S^{2m+1})\rtimes_{α_m} \mathbb{Z}$ even though $n\neq m$ . However, by cyclic cohomology, we show that smooth crossed product algebra $C^\infty(S^{2n+1})\rtimes_{α_n} \mathbb{Z}$ is not isomorphic to $C^\infty(S^{2m+1})\rtimes_{α_m} \mathbb{Z}$ if $n\neq m$.
In this article we construct two minimal unique ergodic diffeomorphisms $α$ and $β$ on $S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8} $. We will show that $C(S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8}) \rtimes_α\mathbb{Z} $ and $C(S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8})\rtimes_β\mathbb{Z} $ are equivalent to each other, while $C^\infty (S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8})\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z} $ and $C^\infty(S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8} )\rtimes_β\mathbb{Z} $ are not.
We show that if $(X.A)$ and $(Y,B)$ are two isomorphic Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast} $-bimodules, then the crossed product $A\times_{X}\mathbb{Z}$ of $A$ by $X$ and the crossed product $B\times_{Y}\mathbb{Z}$ of $B$ by $Y$ are isomorphic as pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebras. We also prove a property of "associativity" between " $\otimes_{\min}$" and "$\times_{X}$" $\ $as well as " $\otimes_{\max}$" and "$\times_{X}$". As an application of these results we show that the crossed product of a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$ -algebra $A$ by a full Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast}$-bimodule $X$ is a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebra.
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metric space with finite covering dimension and let $α, β: X\to X$ be two minimal homeomorphisms. We prove that the crossed product $C^*$-algebras $C(X)\rtimes_α\Z$ and $C(X)\rtimes_\belta\Z$ are isomorphic if and only if they have isomorphic Elliott invariant. In a more general setting, we show that if $X$ is an infinite compact metric space and if $α: X\to X$ is a minimal homeomorphism such that $(X, α)$ has mean dimension zero, then the tensor product of the crossed product with a UHF-algebra of infinite type has generalized tracial rank at most one. This impl…
Let X be an infinite compact metric space with finite covering dimension and let h be a minimal homeomorphism of X. Let A be the associated crossed product C*-algebra. We show that A has tracial rank zero whenever the image of K_0 (A) in the affine functions on the tracial state space of A is dense. As a consequence, we show that these crossed product C*-algebras are in fact simple AH algebras with real rank zero. When X is connected and h is further assumed to be uniquely ergodic, then the above happens if and only if the rotation number associated to h has irrational values. By applying the …
This is a survey article describing the proof that the crossed product C^* (Z, M, h) of a compact smooth manifold M by a minimal diffeomorphism h of M is isomorphic to a direct limit of recursive subhomogeneous C*-algebras.
A partial action is associated with a normal weakly left resolving labelled space such that the crossed product and labelled space $C^*$-algebras are isomorphic. An improved characterization of simplicity for labelled space $C^*$-algebras is given and applied to $C^*$-algebras of subshifts.
There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product, though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra. We apply this result to a variety of Exel systems, including those associated to shifts on the path spaces of directed graphs.
We define and study fibrations of topological groupoids. We interpret a groupoid fibration L->H with fibre G as an action of H on G by groupoid equivalences. Our main result shows that a crossed product for an action of L is isomorphic to an iterated crossed product first by G and then by H. Here groupoid action means a Fell bundle over the groupoid, and crossed product means the section C*-algebra.
Given a correspondence X over a C*-algebra A, we construct a C*-algebra and a Hilbert C*-bimodule over it whose crossed product is isomorphic to the augmented Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra of X. This construction enables us to establish a condition for two augmented Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebras to be Morita equivalent.
Given a labeling c of the edges of a directed graph E by elements of a discrete group G, one can form a skew-product graph E cross_c G. We show, using the universal properties of the various constructions involved, that there is a coaction delta of G on C*(E) such that C*(E cross_c G) is isomorphic to the crossed product C*(E) cross_delta G. This isomorphism is equivariant for the dual action deltahat and a natural action gamma of G on C*(E cross_c G); following results of Kumjian and Pask, we show that C*(E cross_c G) cross_gamma G is isomorphic to C*(E cross_c G) cross_{gamma,r} G, which in …
There are many different crossed products by an endomorphism of a C*-algebra, and constructions by Exel and Stacey have proved particularly useful. Here we show that every Exel crossed product is isomorphic to a Stacey crossed product (though by a different endomorphism of a different C*-algebra), that every Stacey crossed product is an Exel crossed product, and answer some questions raised by Ionescu and Muhly. While this manuscript is not yet in its final form(s) several people have already used our results, so we are posting it now.
We introduce and study a Rokhlin-type property for actions of finite groups on (not necessarily unital) C*-algebras. We show that the corresponding crossed product C*-algebras can be locally approximated by C*-algebras that are stably isomorphic to closed two-sided ideals of the given algebra. We then use this result to prove that several classes of C*-algebras are closed under crossed products by finite group actions with this Rokhlin property.
We study uniform perturbations of crossed product C$^*$-algebras by amenable groups. Given a unital inclusion of C$^*$-algebras $C\subseteq D$ and sufficiently close separable intermediate C$^*$-subalgebras $A$, $B$ for this inclusion with a conditional expectation from $D$ onto $B$, if $A=C\rtimes G$ with $G$ discrete amenable, then $A$ and $B$ are isomorphic. Furthermore, if $C\subseteq D$ is irreducible, then $A=B$.
A continuous family of non-outer conjugate aperiodic automorphisms whose crossed-products are all isomorphic is given on every interpolated free group factor. An explicit "duality" relationship between compact co-commutative Kac algebra (minimal) free product actions and free shift actions is also discussed.
We give a new definition of the semigroup C*-algebra of a left cancellative semigroup, which resolves problems of the construction by X. Li. Namely, the new construction is functorial, and the independence of ideals in the semigroup does not influence the independence of the generators. It has a group C*-algebra as a natural quotient. The C*-algebra of the old construction is a quotient of the new one. All this applies both to the full and reduced C*-algebras. The construction is based on the universal inverse semigroup generated by a left cancellative semigroup. We apply this approach to conn…
In this paper, we realize C*-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical systems as partial crossed products. Reciprocally, we give some sufficient conditions for a partial crossed product to be isomorphic to a C*-algebra of a generalized Boolean dynamical system. As an application, we show that gauge-invariant ideals of C*-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical systems are themselves C*-algebras of generalized Boolean dynamical system.
We develop elliptic theory of operators associated with a diffeomorphism of a closed smooth manifold. The aim of the present paper is to obtain an index formula for such operators in terms of topological invariants of the manifold and of the symbol of the operator. The symbol in this situation is an element of a certain crossed product. We express the index as the pairing of the class in K-theory defined by the symbol and the Todd class in periodic cyclic cohomology of the crossed product.
Connes showed that spectral triples encode (noncommutative) metric information. Further, Connes and Moscovici in their metric bundle construction showed that, as with the Takesaki duality theorem, forming a crossed product spectral triple can substantially simplify the structure. In a recent paper, Bellissard, Marcolli and Reihani (among other things) studied in depth metric notions for spectral triples and crossed product spectral triples for $Z$-actions, with applications in number theory and coding theory. In the work of Connes and Moscovici, crossed products involving groups of diffeomorph…
We use the boundary-path space of a finitely-aligned k-graph Λto construct a compactly-aligned product system X, and we show that the graph algebra C^*(Λ) is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra NO(X). In this setting, we introduce the notion of a crossed product by a semigroup of partial endomorphisms and partially-defined transfer operators by defining it to be NO(X). We then compare this crossed product with other definitions in the literature.
Partial actions of discrete abelian groups can be used to construct both groupoid C*-algebras and partial crossed product algebras. In each case there is a natural notion of an analytic subalgebra. We show that for countable subgroups of the real numbers and free partial actions, these constructions yield the same C*-algebras and the same analytic subalgebras. We also show that under suitable hypotheses an analytic partial crossed product preserves all the information in the dynamical system in the sense that two analytic partial crossed products are isomorphic as Banach algebras if, and only …
When a locally compact group acts on a C*-correspondence, it also acts on the associated Cuntz-Pimsner algebra in a natural way. Hao and Ng have shown that when the group is amenable the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the crossed product correspondence is isomorphic to the crossed product of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra. In this paper, we have a closer look at this isomorphism in the case where the group is not necessarily amenable. We also consider what happens at the level of Toeplitz algebras.
An automorphism $β$ of a $k$-graph $Λ$ induces a crossed product $C^* ( Λ) \rtimes_β\mathbb{Z}$ which is isomorphic to a $(k+1)$-graph algebra $C^* ( Λ\times_β\mathbb{Z})$. In this paper we show how this process interacts with $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras which have been twisted by an element of their second cohomology group. This analysis is done using a long exact sequence in cohomology associated to this data. We conclude with some examples
Given groupoids $G$ and $H$ and a $(G,H)$-equivalence $X$ we may form the transformation groupoid $G\ltimes X\rtimes H$. Given a separable groupoid dynamical system $(A,G\ltimes X\rtimes H,ω)$ we may restrict $ω$ to an action of $G\ltimes X$ on $A$ and form the crossed product $A\rtimes G\ltimes X$. We show that there is an action of $H$ on $A\rtimes G\ltimes X$ and that the iterated crossed product $(A\rtimes G\ltimes X)\rtimes H$ is naturally isomorphic to the crossed product $A\rtimes (G\ltimes X\rtimes H)$.
Cuntz and Li have defined a C*-algebra associated to any integral domain, using generators and relations, and proved that it is simple and purely infinite and that it is stably isomorphic to a crossed product of a commutative C*-algebra. We give an approach to a class of C*-algebras containing those studied by Cuntz and Li, using the general theory of C*-dynamical systems associated to certain semidirect product groups. Even for the special case of the Cuntz-Li algebras, our development is new.
For a twisted partial action Θof a group G on an (associative non-necessarily unital) algebra A over a commutative unital ring k, the crossed product A X_ΘG is proved to be associative. Given a G-graded k-algebra B = \oplus_{g\in G}\B_g with the mild restriction of homogeneous non-degeneracy, a criteria is established for B to be isomorphic to the crossed product B_1 X_ΘG for some twisted partial action of G on B_1. The equality B_g\B_{g^{-1}}B_g = \B_g for all g\in G is one of the ingredients of the criteria, and if it holds and, moreover, B has enough local units, then it is shown that B is …
In a recent paper, Pardo and the first named author introduced a class of C*-algebras which which are constructed from an action of a group on a graph. This class was shown to include many C*-algebras of interest, including all Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class. In this paper, we study the conditions under which these algebras can be realized as partial crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by groups. In addition, for any $n\geq 2$ we present a large class of groups such that for any group $H$ in this class, the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$ is isomorphic to a partial crossed product o…
An integer matrix $A\in M_d(\Z)$ induces a covering $σ_A$ of $\T^d$ and an endomorphism $α_A:f\mapsto f\circ σ_A$ of $C(\T^d)$ for which there is a natural transfer operator $L$. In this paper, we compute the KMS states on the Exel crossed product $C(\T^d)\rtimes_{α_A,L}\N$ and its Toeplitz extension. We find that $C(\T^d)\rtimes_{α_A,L}\N$ has a unique KMS state, which has inverse temperature $β=\log|\det A|$. Its Toeplitz extension, on the other hand, exhibits a phase transition at $β=\log|\det A|$, and for larger $β$ the simplex of KMS$_β$ states is isomorphic to the simplex of probability …
Given an $m$-tempered strongly continuous action $α$ of $\R$ by continuous $^{*}$-automorphisms of a Frechet $^{*}$-algebra $A$, it is shown that the enveloping \hbox{$σ$-$C^{*}$-algebra} $E(S(\R,A^{\infty},α))$ of the smooth Schwartz crossed product $S(\R,A^{\infty},α)$ of the Frechet algebra $A^{\infty}$ of $C^{\infty}$-elements of $A$ is isomorphic to the \hbox{$σ$-$C^{*}$-crossed} product $C^{*}(\R,E(A),α)$ of the enveloping $σ$-$C^{*}$-algebra $E(A)$ of $A$ by the induced action. When $A$ is a hermitian $Q$-algebra, one gets $K$-theory isomorphism $RK_{*}(S(\R,A^{\infty},α)) = K_{*}(C^{*}…
We give examples of minimal diffeomorphisms of compact connected manifolds which are not topologically orbit equivalent, but whose transformation group C*-algebras are isomorphic. The examples show that the following properties of a minimal diffeomorphism are not invariants of the transformation group C*-algebra: having topologically quasidiscrete spectrum; the action on singular cohomology (when the manifolds are diffeomorphic); the homotopy type of the manifold (when the manifolds have the same dimension); and the dimension of the manifold. These examples also give examples of nonconjugate i…
We consider crossed product von Neumann algebras arising from free Bogoljubov actions of the integers. We describe several presentations of them as amalgamated free products and cocycle crossed products and give a criterion for factoriality. A number of isomorphism results for free Bogoljubov crossed products are proved, focusing on those arising from almost periodic representations. We complement our isomorphism results by rigidity results yielding non-isomorphic free Bogoljubov crossed products and by a partial characterisation of strong solidity of a free Bogoljubov crossed products in term…
Consider a projective limit G of finite groups G_n. Fix a compatible family δ^n of coactions of the G_n on a C*-algebra A. From this data we obtain a coaction δof G on A. We show that the coaction crossed product of A by δis isomorphic to a direct limit of the coaction crossed products of A by the δ^n. If A = C*(Λ) for some k-graph Λ, and if the coactions δ^n correspond to skew-products of Λ, then we can say more. We prove that the coaction crossed-product of C*(Λ) by δmay be realised as a full corner of the C*-algebra of a (k+1)-graph. We then explore connections with Yeend's topological high…
We show that for a closed embedding $\mathbb{H}\le \mathbb{G}$ of locally compact quantum groups (LCQGs) with $\mathbb{G}/\mathbb{H}$ admitting an invariant probability measure, a unitary $\mathbb{G}$-representation is type-I if its restriction to $\mathbb{H}$ is. On a related note, we also prove that if an action $\mathbb{G}\circlearrowright A$ of an LCQG on a unital $C^*$-algebra admits an invariant state then the full group algebra of $\mathbb{G}$ embeds into the resulting full crossed product (and into the multiplier algebra of that crossed product if the original algebra is not unital). W…
To a continuous action of a vector group on a $C^*$-algebra, twisted by the imaginary exponential of a symplectic form, one associates a Rieffel deformed algebra as well as a twisted crossed product. We show that the second one is isomorphic to the tensor product of the first one with the $C^*$-algebra of compact operators in a separable Hilbert space and we indicate some applications.
We find the range of a trace on the $K_0$ group of a crossed product by a time-$t$ automorphism of a mapping torus. We also find a formula to compute the Voiculescu-Brown entropy for such an automorphism. By specializing to the commutative setting, we prove that the crossed products by minimal time-t homeomorphisms of suspensions built over strongly orbit equivalent Cantor minimal systems have isomorphic Elliott invariants. As an application of our results we give examples of dynamical systems on (compact metric) connected 1-dimensional spaces which are not flip conjugate (because of different…
If A is a C*-algebra, G a locally compact group, K{\subset}G a compact subgroup and α:G{\to}Aut(A) a continuous homomorphism, let Ax_{α}G denote the crossed product. In this paper we prove that Ax_{α}G is nuclear (respectively type I or liminal) if and only if certain hereditary C*-subalgebras, S_{π}, I_{π}{\subset}Ax_{α}G π{\in}K, are nuclear (respectively type I or liminal). These algebras are the analogs of the algebras of spherical functions considered by R. Godement for groups with large compact subgroups. If K=G is a compact group or a compact quantum group, the algebras S_{π} are stably…
We compare the algebras of the quantum automorphism group of finite-dimensional C$^\ast$-algebra $B$, which includes the quantum permutation group $S_N^+$, where $N = \dim B$. We show that matrix amplification and crossed products by trace-preserving actions by a finite Abelian group $Γ$ lead to isomorphic $\ast$-algebras. This allows us to transfer various properties such as inner unitarity, Connes embeddability, and strong $1$-boundedness between the various algebras associated with these quantum groups.
We consider a free action of an Ore semigroup on a higher-rank graph, and the induced action by endomorphisms of the $C^*$-algebra of the graph. We show that the crossed product by this action is stably isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra of a quotient graph. Our main tool is Laca's dilation theory for endomorphic actions of Ore semigroups on $C^*$-algebras, which embeds such an action in an automorphic action of the enveloping group on a larger $C^*$-algebra.
We show that the category A(G) of actions of a locally compact group G on C*-algebras (with equivariant nondegenerate *-homomorphisms into multiplier algebras) is equivalent, via a full-crossed-product functor, to a comma category of maximal coactions of G under the comultiplication (C*(G),delta_G); and also that A(G) is equivalent, via a reduced-crossed-product functor, to a comma category of normal coactions under the comultiplication. This extends classical Landstad duality to a category equivalence, and allows us to identify those C*-algebras which are isomorphic to crossed products by G a…
We prove that a crossed product algebra arising from a minimal dynamical system on the product of the Cantor set and the circle has real rank zero if and only if that system is rigid. In the case that cocycles take values in the rotation group, it is also shown that rigidity implies tracial rank zero, and in particular, the crossed product algebra is isomorphic to a unital simple AT-algebra of real rank zero. Under the same assumption, we show that two systems are approximately $K$-conjugate if and only if there exists a sequence of isomorphisms between two associated crossed products which ap…
When S is a discrete subsemigroup of a discrete group G such that G = S^{-1} S, it is possible to extend circle-valued multipliers from S to G; to dilate (projective) isometric representations of S to (projective) unitary representations of G; and to dilate/extend actions of S by injective endomorphisms of a C*-algebra to actions of G by automorphisms of a larger C*-algebra. These dilations are unique provided they satisfy a minimality condition. The (twisted) semigroup crossed product corresponding to an action of S is isomorphic to a full corner in the (twisted) crossed product by the dilate…
Let F be a finite subgroup of SL_2 (Z) (necessarily isomorphic to one of Z/2Z, Z/3Z, Z/4Z, or Z/6Z), and let F act on the irrational rotational algebra A_θ via the restriction of the canonical action of SL_2 (Z). Then the crossed product of A_θ by F, and the fixed point algebra for the action of F on A_θ, are AF algebras. The same is true for the crossed product and fixed point algebra of the flip action of Z/2Z on any simple d-dimensional noncommutative torus A_Θ. Along the way, we prove a number of general results which should have useful applications in other situations.
We give a subfactor construction for a $II_{1}$ factor M which is not anti-isomorphic to itself. The $II_{1}$ factor we consider is essentially the same as the example previously given by Connes. However, our construction uses the recently developed theory of free group factors. We show that there exists an inclusion of $II_{1}$ factors $A\subset B$ which by iteration of the Jones basic construction produces $M$ as the enveloping algebra. Here A is a free group factor and B is isomorphic to the crossed product of A by an action of a finite group. By using a Connes' argument involving the invar…
Let $θ, θ'$ be irrational numbers and $A, B$ be matrices in $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of infinite order. We compute the $K$-theory of the crossed product $\mathcal{A}_θ\rtimes_A \mathbb{Z}$ and show that $\mathcal{A}_θ \rtimes_A\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{θ'} \rtimes_B \mathbb{Z}$ are $*$-isomorphic if and only if $θ= \pmθ' \pmod{\mathbb{Z}}$ and $I-A^{-1}$ is matrix equivalent to $I-B^{-1}$. Combining this result and an explicit construction of equivariant bimodules, we show that $\mathcal{A}_θ \rtimes_A\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{θ'} \rtimes_B \mathbb{Z}$ are Morita equivalent if and only if $θ…
For a discrete group $G$, we develop a `$G$-balanced tensor product' of two coactions $(A,δ)$ and $(B,ε)$, which takes place on a certain subalgebra of the maximal tensor product $A\otimes_{\max} B$. Our motivation for this is that we are able to prove that given two actions of $G$, the dual coaction on the crossed product of the maximal-tensor-product action is isomorphic to the $G$-balanced tensor product of the dual coactions. In turn, our motivation for this is to give an analogue, for coaction functors, of a crossed-product functor originated by Baum, Guentner, and Willett, and further de…
We describe both the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras and their Toeplitz versions, as crossed products of commutative C*-algebras by partial automorphisms. In the latter case, the commutative algebra has, as its spectrum, the union of the Cantor set and a copy the set of natural numbers N, fitted together in such a way that N is an open dense subset. The partial automorphism is induced by a map that acts like the odometer map on the Cantor set while being the translation by one on N. From this we deduce, by taking quotients, that the Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras are isomorphic to the (classical) crossed…
Let G be a finite group, let A be an infinite-dimensional stably finite simple unital C*-algebra, and let α\colon G \to Aut (A) be an action of G on A which has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. Let A^α be the fixed point algebra. Then the radius of comparison satisfies rc (A^α) \leq rc (A) and rc ( C* (G, A, α) ) \leq ( 1 / card (G) ) rc (A). The inclusion of A^α in A induces an isomorphism from the purely positive part of the Cuntz semigroup Cu (A^α) to the fixed points of the purely positive part of Cu (A), and the purely positive part of Cu ( C* (G, A, α) ) is isomorphic to this semigroup…
We study compact group actions with finite Rokhlin dimension, particularly in relation to crossed products. For example, we characterize the duals of such actions, generalizing previous partial results for the Rokhlin property. As an application, we determine the ideal structure of their crossed products. Under the assumption of so-called commuting towers, we show that taking crossed products by such actions preserves a number of relevant classes of C*-algebras, including: $D$-absorbing C*-algebras, where $D$ is a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra, stable C*-algebras, C*-algebras with finite …
Let $Ω$ be a tiling space and let $G$ be the maximal group of rotations which fixes $Ω$. Then the cohomology of $Ω$ and $Ω/G$ are both invariants which give useful geometric information about the tilings in $Ω$. The noncommutative analog of the cohomology of $Ω$ is the K-theory of a C*-algebra associated to $Ω$, and for translationally finite tilings of dimension 2 or less the K-theory is isomorphic to the direct sum of cohomology groups. In this paper we give a prescription for calculating the noncommutative analog of the cohomology of $Ω/G$, that is, the K-theory of the crossed product of th…
We consider group-subgroup pairs in which the group is a semidirect product and the subgroup is contained in the normal part. We give conditions for the pair to be a Hecke pair and we show that the enveloping Hecke algebra and Hecke C*-algebra are canonically isomorphic to semigroup crossed products, generalizing earlier results of Arledge, Laca and Raeburn and of Brenken.
