We prove that a crossed product algebra arising from a minimal dynamical system on the product of the Cantor set and the circle has real rank zero if and only if that system is rigid. In the case that cocycles take values in the rotation group, it is also shown that rigidity implies tracial rank zero, and in particular, the crossed product algebra is isomorphic to a unital simple AT-algebra of real rank zero. Under the same assumption, we show that two systems are approximately $K$-conjugate if and only if there exists a sequence of isomorphisms between two associated crossed products which approximately maps $C(X\times \T)$ onto $C(X\times \T)$.
Let $X$ be the Cantor set and $ϕ$ be a minimal homeomorphism on $X\times\T$. We show that the crossed product $C^*$-algebra $C^*(X\times\T,ϕ)$ is a simple $A\T$-algebra provided that the associated cocycle takes its values in rotations on $\T$. Given two minimal systems $(X\times\T,ϕ)$ and $(Y\times\T,ψ)$ such that $ϕ$ and $ψ$ arise from cocycles with values in isometric homeomorphisms on $\T$, we show that two systems are approximately $K$-conjugate when they have the same $K$-theoretical information.
Let d be a positive integer, let X be the Cantor set, and let Z^d act freely and minimally on X. We prove that the crossed product C* (Z^d, X) has stable rank one, real rank zero, and cancellation of projections, and that the order on K_0 (C* (Z^d, X)) is determined by traces. We obtain the same conclusion for the C*-algebras of various kinds of aperiodic tilings.
A Cantor minimal system is of finite topological rank if it has a Bratteli-Vershik representation whose number of vertices per level is uniformly bounded. We prove that if the topological rank of a minimal dynamical system on a Cantor set is finite then all its minimal Cantor factors have finite topological rank as well. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Donoso, Durand, Maass, and Petite.
Several versions of approximate conjugacy for minimal dynamical systems are introduced. Relation between approximate conjugacy and corresponding crossed product $C^*$-algebras is discussed. For the Cantor minimal systems, a complete description is given for these relations via $K$-theory and $C^*$-algebras. For example, it is shown that two Cantor minimal systems are approximately $τ$-conjugate if and only if they are orbit equivalent and have the same periodic spectrum. It is also shown that two such systems are approximately $K$-conjugate if and only if the corresponding crossed product $C^*…
We show that every minimal, free action of the group Z^2 on the Cantor set is orbit equivalent to an AF-relation. As a consequence, this extends the classification of minimal systems on the Cantor set up to orbit equivalence to include AF-relations, Z-actions and Z^2-actions.
It is now well known that a simple graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$ of a directed graph $E$ is either AF or purely infinite. In this paper, we address the question of whether this is the case for labeled graph $C^*$-algebras recently introduced by Bates and Pask as one of the generalizations of graph $C^*$-algebras, and show that there exists a family of simple unital labeled graph $C^*$-algebras which are neither AF nor purely infinite. Actually these algebras are shown to be isomorphic to crossed products $C(X)\times_T \mathbb Z$ where the dynamical systems $(X,T)$ are Cantor minimal subshifts. …
We introduce the fundamental group ${\mathcal F}(\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ})$ of a uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $G$-system $\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ}$ where $G$ is a countable discrete group. We compute fundamental groups of several uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $G$-systems. We show that if $\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ}$ arises from a free action $ϕ$ of a finitely generated abelian group, then there exists a unital countable subring $R$ of $\mathbb{R}$ such that $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ})=R_{+}^\times$. We also consider the relation between fundamental groups of uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}^n…
We prove that a `small' extension of a minimal AF equivalence relation on a Cantor set is orbit equivalent to the AF relation. By a `small' extension we mean an equivalence relation generated by the minimal AF equivalence relation and another AF equivalence relation which is defined on a closed thin subset. The result we obtain is a generalization of the main theorem in [GMPS2].
Floyd gave an example of a minimal dynamical system which was an extension of an odometer and the fibres of the associated factor map were either singletons or intervals. Gjerde and Johansen showed that the odometer could be replaced by any Cantor minimal system. Here, we show further that the intervals can be generalized to cubes of arbitrary dimension and to attractors of certain iterated function systems. We discuss applications.
It is introduced an analogue of the orbit-breaking subalgebra for the case of free flows on locally compact metric spaces, which has a natural approximate structure in terms of a fixed point and any nested sequence of central slices around this point. It is shown that in the case of minimal flows admitting a compact Cantor central slice, the resulting $C^*$-algebra is the stabilization of the Putnam orbit-breaking subalgebra associated to the induced homeomorphism on the central slice.
We study homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with $k$ ($k < +\infty$) minimal invariant closed (but not open) subsets; we also study crossed product C*-algebras associated to these Cantor systems and their certain orbit-cut sub-C*-algebras. In the case that $k\geq 2$, the crossed product C*-algebra is stably finite, has stable rank 2, and has real rank zero if in addition $(X, σ)$ is aperiodic. The image of the index map is connected to certain directed graphs arising from the Bratteli-Vershik-Kakutani model of the Cantor system. Using this, it is shown that the ideal of the Bratteli diagram (of th…
We study amenable minimal Cantor systems of free groups arising from the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and certain Cantor systems. It is shown that every virtually free group admits continuously many amenable minimal Cantor systems whose crossed products are mutually non-isomorphic Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class (with explicitly determined K-theory). The technique developed in our study also enables us to compute the K-theory of certain amenable minimal Cantor systems. We apply it to the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and the products of the odometer transformations, …
Bounded orbit injection equivalence is an equivalence relation defined on minimal free Cantor systems which is a candidate to generalize flip Kakutani equivalence to actions of the Abelian free groups on more than one generator. This paper characterizes bounded orbit injection equivalence in terms of a mild strengthening of Rieffel-Morita equivalence of the associated C*-crossed-product algebras. Moreover, we construct an ordered group which is an invariant for bounded orbit injection equivalence, and does not agrees with the K\_0 group of the associated C*-crossed-product in general. This new…
Let β: S^n \to S^n, for n = 2k + 1, k \geq 1, be one of the known examples of a non-uniquely ergodic minimal diffeomorphism of an odd dimensional sphere. For every such minimal dynamical system (S^n, β) there is a Cantor minimal system (X, α) such that the corresponding product system (X x S^n, αx β) is minimal and the resulting crossed product C*-algebra C(X x S^n) \rtimes_{αx β} \mathbb{Z} is tracially approximately an interval algebra (TAI). This entails classification for such C*-algebras. Moreover, the minimal Cantor system (X, α) is such that each tracial state on C(X x S^n) \rtimes_β \m…
A category structure for ordered Bratteli diagrams is proposed in which isomorphism coincides with the notion of equivalence of Herman, Putnam, and Skau. It is shown that the natural one-to-one correspondence between the category of Cantor minimal systems and the category of simple properly ordered Bratteli diagrams is in fact an equivalence of categories. This gives a Bratteli-Vershik model for factor maps between Cantor minimal systems. We give a construction of factor maps between Cantor minimal systems in terms of suitable maps (called premorphisms) between the corresponding ordered Bratte…
This paper studies the relationship between minimal dynamical systems on the product of the Cantor set ($X$) and torus ($\T^2$) and their corresponding crossed product $C^*$-algebras. For the case when the cocycles are rotations, we studied the structure of the crossed product $C^*$-algebra $A$ by looking at a large subalgebra $A_x$. It is proved that, as long as the cocycles are rotations, the tracial rank of the crossed product $C^*$-algebra is always no more than one, which then indicates that it falls into the category of classifiable $C^*$-algebras. If a certain rigidity condition is sati…
This is a survey which discusses the isomorphism problem for both C* and smooth crossed products by minimal diffeomorphisms. For C* crossed products, examples demonstrate the failure of the obvious analog of the Giordano-Putnam-Skau Theorem on minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor set. For smooth crossed products, there are many open problems.
Given a minimal action $α$ of a countable group on the Cantor set, we show that the alternating full group $\mathsf{A}(α)$ is non-amenable if and only if the topological full group $\mathsf{F}(α)$ is $C^*$-simple. This implies, for instance, that the Elek-Monod example of non-amenable topological full group coming from a Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}^2$-system is $C^*$-simple.
We show that Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$-systems and essentially free amenable odometers are almost finite. We also compute the homology groups of Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$-systems and show that the associated transformation groupoids satisfy the HK conjecture if and only if the action is free.
We provide examples of ambient nuclear C*-algebras of non-nuclear C*-algebras with no proper intermediate C*-algebras. In particular this gives the first examples of minimal ambient nuclear C*-algebras of non-nuclear C*-algebras. For this purpose, we study generic Cantor systems of infinite free product groups.
