We show that every minimal, free action of the group Z^2 on the Cantor set is orbit equivalent to an AF-relation. As a consequence, this extends the classification of minimal systems on the Cantor set up to orbit equivalence to include AF-relations, Z-actions and Z^2-actions.
We prove that a `small' extension of a minimal AF equivalence relation on a Cantor set is orbit equivalent to the AF relation. By a `small' extension we mean an equivalence relation generated by the minimal AF equivalence relation and another AF equivalence relation which is defined on a closed thin subset. The result we obtain is a generalization of the main theorem in [GMPS2].
Bounded orbit injection equivalence is an equivalence relation defined on minimal free Cantor systems which is a candidate to generalize flip Kakutani equivalence to actions of the Abelian free groups on more than one generator. This paper characterizes bounded orbit injection equivalence in terms of a mild strengthening of Rieffel-Morita equivalence of the associated C*-crossed-product algebras. Moreover, we construct an ordered group which is an invariant for bounded orbit injection equivalence, and does not agrees with the K\_0 group of the associated C*-crossed-product in general. This new…
We show that every minimal action of any finitely generated abelian group on the Cantor set is (topologically) orbit equivalent to an AF relation. As a consequence, this extends the classification up to orbit equivalence of minimal dynamical systems on the Cantor set to include AF relations and Z^d-actions.
To any continuous eigenvalue of a Cantor minimal system $(X,\,T)$, we associate an element of the dimension group $K^0(X,\,T)$ associated to $(X,\,T)$. We introduce and study the concept of irrational miscibility of a dimension group. The main property of these dimension groups is the absence of irrational values in the additive group of continuous spectrum of their realizations by Cantor minimal systems. The strong orbit equivalence (respectively orbit equivalence) class of a Cantor minimal system associated to an irrationally miscible dimension group $(G,\,u)$ (resp. with trivial infinitesim…
In this note we consider dynamical systems $(X,G)$ on a Cantor set $X$ satisfying some mild technical conditions. The considered class includes, in particular, minimal and transitive aperiodic systems. We prove that two such systems $(X_1,G_1)$ and $(X_2,G_2)$ are orbit equivalent if and only if their full groups are isomorphic as abstract groups. This result is a topological version of the well-known Dye's theorem established originally for ergodic measure-preserving actions.
A category structure for ordered Bratteli diagrams is proposed in which isomorphism coincides with the notion of equivalence of Herman, Putnam, and Skau. It is shown that the natural one-to-one correspondence between the category of Cantor minimal systems and the category of simple properly ordered Bratteli diagrams is in fact an equivalence of categories. This gives a Bratteli-Vershik model for factor maps between Cantor minimal systems. We give a construction of factor maps between Cantor minimal systems in terms of suitable maps (called premorphisms) between the corresponding ordered Bratte…
It is introduced an analogue of the orbit-breaking subalgebra for the case of free flows on locally compact metric spaces, which has a natural approximate structure in terms of a fixed point and any nested sequence of central slices around this point. It is shown that in the case of minimal flows admitting a compact Cantor central slice, the resulting $C^*$-algebra is the stabilization of the Putnam orbit-breaking subalgebra associated to the induced homeomorphism on the central slice.
In the paper, we consider the full group $[ϕ]$ and topological full group $[[ϕ]]$ of a Cantor minimal system $(X,\f)$. We prove that the commutator subgroups $D([\f])$ and $D([[\f]])$ are simple and show that the groups $D([\f])$ and $D([[\f]])$ completely determine the class of orbit equivalence and flip conjugacy of $\f$, respectively. These results improve the classification found in \cite{gps:1999}. As a corollary of the technique used, we establish the fact that $\f$ can be written as a product of three involutions from $[\f]$.
The higher dimensional Frobenius problem was introduced by a preceding paper [Fan, Rao and Zhang, Higher dimensional Frobenius problem: maximal saturated cones, growth function and rigidity, Preprint 2014]. %the higher dimensional Frobenius problem was introduced and a directional growth function was studied. In this paper, we investigate the Lipschitz equivalence of dust-like self-similar sets in $\mathbb R^d$. For any self-similar set, we associate with it a higher dimensional Frobenius problem, and we show that the directional growth function of the associate higher dimensional Frobenius pr…
We study amenable minimal Cantor systems of free groups arising from the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and certain Cantor systems. It is shown that every virtually free group admits continuously many amenable minimal Cantor systems whose crossed products are mutually non-isomorphic Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class (with explicitly determined K-theory). The technique developed in our study also enables us to compute the K-theory of certain amenable minimal Cantor systems. We apply it to the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and the products of the odometer transformations, …
We prove a result about extension of a minimal AF-equivalence relation R on the Cantor set X, the extension being `small' in the sense that we modify R on a thin closed subset Y of X. We show that the resulting extended equivalence relation S is orbit equivalent to the original R, and so, in particular, S is affable. Even in the simplest case--when Y is a finite set--this result is highly non-trivial. The result itself--called the absorption theorem--is a powerful and crucial tool for the study of the orbit structure of minimal Z^n-actions on the Cantor set [GMPS]. The absorption theorem is a …
The purpose of this note is twofold. In the first part we observe that two finitely generated non-amenable groups are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions. In particular, free groups if different rank admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions unlike in the measurable setting. In the second part we introduce the measured orbit equivalence category of a Cantor minimal system and construct (in certain cases) a representation of this category on the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces. This gives rise to novel fu…
In this paper, we completely solve the problem when a Cantor dynamical system $(X,f)$ can be embedded in $\mathbb{R}$ with vanishing derivative everywhere. For this purpose, we construct a refining sequence of marked clopen partitions of $X$ which is adapted to a dynamical system of this kind. It turns out that there is a huge class of such systems.
A nilpotent Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action $Φ\colon Γ\times \frak{X} \to \frak{X}$ on a Cantor set $\frak{X}$, where $Γ$ contains a finitely-generated nilpotent subgroup $Γ_0 \subset Γ$ of finite index. In this note, we show that these actions are distinguished among general Cantor actions: any effective action of a finitely generated group on a Cantor space, which is continuously orbit equivalent to a nilpotent Cantor action, must itself be a nilpotent Cantor action. As an application of this result, we obtain new invariants of nilpotent Cantor actions under continuous orbit…
We prove that commutator subgroups of topological full groups arising from minimal subshifts have exponential growth. We also prove that the measurable full group associated to the countable, measure-preserving, ergodic and hyperfinite equivalence relation is topologically generated by two elements.
We will show that an equivalence relation on a Cantor set arising from a two-dimensional substitution tiling by polygons is affable in the sense of Giordano, Putnam and Skau.
We give conditions on the subgroups of the circle to be realized as the subgroups of eigenvalues of minimal Cantor systems belonging to a determined strong orbit equivalence class. Actually, the additive group of continuous eigenvalues E(X,T) of the minimal Cantor system (X,T) is a subgroup of the intersection I(X,T) of all the images of the dimension group by its traces. We show, whenever the infinitesimal subgroup of the dimension group associated to (X,T) is trivial, the quotient group I(X,T)/E(X,T) is torsion free. We give examples with non trivial infinitesimal subgroups where this proper…
A group action has essential holonomy if the set of points with non-trivial holonomy has positive measure. If such an action is topologically free, then having essential holonomy is equivalent to the action not being essentially free, which means that the set of points with non-trivial stabilizer has positive measure. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the property of having essential holonomy and structure of the acting group for minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets. We show that if such a group action is locally quasi-analytic and has essential holonomy, then every c…
In this paper we study speedups of dynamical systems in the topological category. Specifically, we characterize when one minimal homeomorphism on a Cantor space is the speedup of another. We go on to provide a characterization for strong speedups, i.e., when the jump function has at most one point of discontinuity. These results provide topological versions of the measure-theoretic results of Arnoux, Ornstein and Weiss, and are closely related to Giordano, Putnam and Skau's characterization of orbit equivalence for minimal Cantor systems.
We study homeomorphisms of a Cantor set with $k$ ($k < +\infty$) minimal invariant closed (but not open) subsets; we also study crossed product C*-algebras associated to these Cantor systems and their certain orbit-cut sub-C*-algebras. In the case that $k\geq 2$, the crossed product C*-algebra is stably finite, has stable rank 2, and has real rank zero if in addition $(X, σ)$ is aperiodic. The image of the index map is connected to certain directed graphs arising from the Bratteli-Vershik-Kakutani model of the Cantor system. Using this, it is shown that the ideal of the Bratteli diagram (of th…
A group $Γ$ is said to be finitely non-co-Hopfian, or renormalizable, if there exists a self-embedding $φ\colon Γ\to Γ$ whose image is a proper subgroup of finite index. Such a proper self-embedding is called a renormalization for $Γ$. In this work, we associate a dynamical system to a renormalization $φ$ of $Γ$. The discriminant invariant ${\mathcal D}_φ$ of the associated Cantor dynamical system is a profinite group which is a measure of the asymmetries of the dynamical system. If ${\mathcal D}_φ$ is a finite group for some renormalization, we show that $Γ/C_φ$ is virtually nilpotent, where …
We show that every uniquely ergodic minimal Cantor system is topological orbit equivalent to the natural extension of a numeration scale associated to a logistic map.
In this paper, we analyze the complexity of topological conjugacy of pointed Cantor minimal systems from the point of view of descriptive set theory. We prove that the topological conjugacy relation on pointed Cantor minimal systems is Borel bireducible with the Borel equivalence relation $Δ_{\mathbb{R}}^+$ on $\mathbb{R}^{\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $x Δ_{\mathbb{R}}^+ y \Leftrightarrow \{x_i:i \in \mathbb{N}\}=\{y_i:i \in \mathbb{N}\}$. Moreover, we show that $Δ_{\mathbb{R}}^+$ is a lower bound for the Borel complexity of topological conjugacy of Cantor minimal systems. Finally, we interpret our…
We give three families of parabolic rational maps and show that every Cantor set of circles as the Julia set of a non-hyperbolic rational map must be quasisymmetrically equivalent to the Julia set of one map in these families for suitable parameters. Combining a result obtained before, we give a complete classification of the Cantor circles Julia sets in the sense of quasisymmetric equivalence. Moreover, we study the regularity of the components of the Cantor circles Julia sets and establish a sufficient and necessary condition when a component of a Cantor circles Julia set is a quasicircle.
We construct a minimal topological action $\wp$ of a non-amenable group on a Cantor set $C$, which is non-uniquely ergodic and furthermore there exist ergodic invariant measures $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ such that $(\wp,C,μ_1)$ and $(\wp,C,μ_2)$ are not orbit equivalent measurable equivalence relations.
A Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action of a countably generated group G on a Cantor space X. Such actions are also called generalized odometers in the literature. In this work, we introduce two new conjugacy invariants for Cantor actions, the stabilizer limit group and the centralizer limit group. An action is wild if the stabilizer limit group is an increasing sequence of stabilizer groups without bound, and otherwise is said to be stable if this group chain is bounded. For Cantor actions by a finitely generated group G, we prove that stable actions satisfy a rigidity principle, a…
Equationally compact subgroups of countable groups were introduced by Banaschewski. For all known cases the orbit closure of such a subgroup is a countable subset in the space of subgroups and has finite Cantor-Bendixson rank. We show that there exists a finitely generated group $Γ$ such that for any countable ordinal $α$ we have an equationally compact subgroup $H\subset Γ$ for which the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the orbit closure of $H$ equals to $α+2$. Then we give an explicite construction of continuum many equationally compact subgroups of $Γ$ such that the associated ergodic Bernoulli shi…
In this article we give necessary and sufficient conditions that a complex number must satisfy to be a continuous eigenvalue of a minimal Cantor system. Similarly, for minimal Cantor systems of finite rank, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for having a measure theoretical eigenvalue. These conditions are established from the combinatorial information of the Bratteli-Vershik representations of such systems. As an application, from any minimal Cantor system, we construct a strong orbit equivalent system without irrational eigenvalues which shares all measure theoretical eigenvalues…
We give a new proof of a theorem of Giordano, Putnam and Skau characterizing orbit equivalence of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space in terms of their sets of invariant Borel probability measures. The proof is based on a strengtehning of a theorem of Krieger concerning minimal actions of certain locally finite groups of homeomorphisms, and we also give a new proof of the Giordano--Putnam--Skau characterization of orbit equivalence for these actions.
We study the existence of limiting laws of rare events corresponding to the entrance of the orbits on certain target sets in the phase space. The limiting laws are obtained when the target sets shrink to a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure. We consider both the presence and absence of clustering, which is detected by the Extremal Index, which turns out to be very useful to identify the compatibility between the dynamics and the fractal structure of the limiting Cantor set. The computation of the Extremal Index is connected to the box dimension of the intersection between the Cantor set and i…
A solenoidal manifold is the inverse limit space of a tower of proper coverings of a compact manifold. In this work, we introduce new invariants for solenoidal manifolds, their asymptotic Steinitz orders and their prime spectra, and show they are invariants of the homeomorphism type. These invariants are formulated in terms of the monodromy Cantor action associated to a solenoidal manifold. To this end, we continue our study of invariants for minimal equicontinuous Cantor actions. We introduce the three types of prime spectra associated to such actions, and study their invariance properties un…
Let $D$ be the set of $β\in (1, 2]$ such that $f_β$ is a symmetric tent map with finite critical orbit. For $β\in D$, by operating Denjoy like surgery on $f_β$, we constructed a $C^1$ unimodal map $\tilde{g}_β$ admitting a thick hyperbolic repelling invariant Cantor set which contains a wild Cantor attractor. The smoothness of $\tilde{g}_β$ is ensured by the effective estimation of the preimages of the critical point as well as the prescribed lengths of the inserted intervals. Furthermore, $D$ is dense in $(1, 2]$, and $\tilde{g}_β$ can not be $C^{1+α}$ because the hyperbolic repelling invaria…
We will study torus actions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras trivially acting on its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebras from the view points of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts and flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts.
We consider the outer billiards map with contraction outside polygons. We construct a 1-parameter family of systems such that each system has an open set in which the dynamics is reduced to that of a piecewise contraction on the interval. Using the theory of rotation numbers, we deduce that every point inside the open set is asymptotic to either a single periodic orbit (rational case) or a Cantor set (irrational case). In particular, we deduce existence of an attracting Cantor set for certain parameter values. Moreover, for a different choice of a 1-parameter family, we prove that the system i…
In this paper, we consider semigroup actions of discrete countable semigroups on compact spaces by surjective local homeomorphisms. We introduce notions of continuous one-sided orbit equivalence and continuous orbit equivalence for semigroup actions, and characterize them in terms of the corresponding semi-groupoids and transformation groupoids respectively. Finally, we consider the case of semigroup actions by homeomorphisms and relate continuous orbit equivalence of semigroup actions to that of group actions.
Drimbe and Vaes proved an orbit equivalence superrigidity theorem for left-right wreath product actions in the measurable setting. We establish the counterpart result in the topological setting for continuous orbit equivalence. This gives us minimal, topologically free actions that are continuous orbit equivalence superrigid. One main ingredient for the proof is to show continuous cocycle superrigidity for certain generalized full shifts, extending our previous result with Chung.
This paper studies the behavior under iteration of the maps T_{ab}(x,y) = (F_{ab}(x)- y, x) of the plane R^2, in which F_{ab}(x)= ax if x>0 and bx if x<0. These maps are area-preserving homeomorphisms of the plane that map rays from the origin into rays from the origin. Orbits of the map correspond to solutions of the nonlinear difference equation x_{n+2}= 1/2(a-b)|x_{n+1}| + 1/2(a+b)x_{n+1} - x_n. This difference equation can be written in an eigenvalue form for a nonlinear difference operator of Schrodinger type, in which μ= 1/2(a-b) is viewed as fixed and the energy E=2- 1/2(a+b). The paper…
We will study several subgroups of continuous full groups of one-sided topological Markov shifts from the view points of cohomology groups of full group actions on the shift spaces. We also study continuous orbit equivalence and strongly continuous orbit equivalence in terms of these subgroups of the continuous full groups and the cohomology groups.
Given an ergodic probability measure preserving dynamical system $\G\acts (X,μ)$, where $\G$ is a finitely generated countable group, we show that the asymptotic growth of the number of finite models for the dynamics, in the sense of sofic approximations, is an invariant of orbit equivalence. We then prove an additivity formula for free products with amenable (possibly trivial) amalgamation. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial proofs of several results in orbit equivalence theory.
We take the first steps towards a better understanding of continuous orbit equivalence, i.e., topological orbit equivalence with continuous cocycles. First, we characterise continuous orbit equivalence in terms of isomorphisms of C*-crossed products preserving Cartan subalgebras. This is the topological analogue of the classical result by Singer and Feldman-Moore in the measurable setting. Secondly, we turn to continuous orbit equivalence rigidity, i.e., the question whether for certain classes of topological dynamical systems, continuous orbit equivalence implies conjugacy. We show that this …
We extend ultragraph shift spaces and the realization of ultragraph C*-algebras as partial crossed products to include ultragraphs with sinks (under a mild condition, called (RFUM2), which allow us to dismiss the use of filters) and we describe the associated transformation groupoid. Using these characterizations we study continuous orbit equivalence of ultragraph shift spaces (via groupoids) and KMS and ground states (via partial crossed products).
We study KMS states for gauge actions with potential functions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras whose underlying one-sided topological Markov shifts are continuous orbit equivalent. As a result, we have a certain relationship between topological entropy of continuous orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts.
We study asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence of Smale spaces. We prove that two irreducible Smale spaces are flip conjugate if and only if there exists a periodic point preserving homeomorphism giving an asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence between them. We introduce a notion of asymptotic topological conjugacy and asymptotic flip conjugacy in Smale spaces and characterize them in terms of the associated Ruelle algebras with dual actioons. We finally characterize the flip conjugacy classes of irreducible two-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of the associated Ruelle algebras with…
Previous work showed that every pair of nontrivial Bernoulli shifts over a fixed free group are orbit equivalent. In this paper, we prove that if $G_1,G_2$ are nonabelian free groups of finite rank then every nontrivial Bernoulli shift over $G_1$ is stably orbit equivalent to every nontrivial Bernoulli shift over $G_2$. This answers a question of S. Popa.
A $λ$-graph system $\frak L$ is a labeled Bratteli diagram with shift operation. It is a generalized notion of finite labeled graph and presents a subshifts. We will study continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided subshifts and topological conjugacy of two-sided subshifts from the view points of groupoids and $C^*$-algebras constructed from $λ$-graph systems.
We show that the group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set $H(K)$ has ample generics, that is, for every $m$ the diagonal conjugacy action $g\cdot(h_1,h_2,..., h_m)=(gh_1g^{-1},gh_2g^{-1},..., gh_mg^{-1})$ of $H(K)$ on $H(K)^m$ has a comeager orbit. This answers a question of Kechris and Rosendal. We show that the generic tuple in $H(K)^m$ can be taken to be the limit of a certain projective Fraisse family. We also present a proof of the existence of the generic homeomorphism of the Cantor set in the context of the projective Fraisse theory.

In the first part of the paper, we introduce notions of asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence and asymptotic conjugacy in Smale spaces and characterize them in terms of their asymptotic Ruelle algebras with their dual actions. In the second part, we introduce a groupoid $C^*$-algebra which is an extended version of the asymptotic Ruelle algebra from a Smale space and study the extended Ruelle algebras from the view points of Cuntz--Krieger algebras. As a result, the asymptotic Ruelle algebra is realized as a fixed point algebra of the extended Ruelle algebra under certain circle action.
We give conditions for when continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided shift spaces implies flow equivalence of the associated two-sided shift spaces. Using groupoid techniques, we prove that this is always the case for shifts of finite type. This generalises a result of Matsumoto and Matui from the irreducible to the general case. We also prove that a pair of one-sided shift spaces of finite type are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if their groupoids are isomorphic, and that the corresponding two-sided shifts are flow equivalent if and only if the groupoids are stably isomorphic. As …
The following result is proven. Let $G_1 \cc^{T_1} (X_1,μ_1)$ and $G_2 \cc^{T_2} (X_2,μ_2)$ be orbit-equivalent, essentially free, probability measure preserving actions of countable groups $G_1$ and $G_2$. Let $H$ be any countable group. For $i=1,2$, let $Γ_i = G_i *H$ be the free product. Then the actions of $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ coinduced from $T_1$ and $T_2$ are orbit-equivalent. As an application, it is shown that if $Γ$ is a free group, then all nontrivial Bernoulli shifts over $Γ$ are orbit-equivalent.
Cohomology for actions of free abelian groups on the Cantor set has (when endowed with an order structure) provided a complete invariance for orbit equivalence. In this paper, we study a particular class of actions of such groups called odometers (or profinite actions) and investigate their cohomology. We show that for a free, minimal $\Z^{d}$-odometer, the first cohomology group provides a complete invariant for the action up to conjugacy. This is in contrast with the situation for orbit equivalence where it is the cohomology in dimension $d$ which provides the invariant. We also consider cla…
We will prove that one-sided topological Markov shifts $(X_A,σ_A)$ and $(X_B,σ_B)$ for matrices $A$ and $B$ with entries in $\{0,1\}$ are topologically orbit equivalent if and only if there exists an isomorphism between the Cuntz-Krieger algebras ${\Cal O}_A$ and ${\Cal O}_B$ keeping their commutative $C^*$-subalgerbas $C(X_A)$ and $C(X_B)$. It is also equivalent to the condition that there exists a homeomorphism from $X_A$ to $X_B$ intertwining their topological full groups. We will also study structure of the automorphisms of ${\Cal O}_A$ keeping the commutative $C^*$-algebra $C(X_A)$.
Let A,B be square irreducible matrices with entries in {0,1}. We will show that if the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X_A,σ_A) and (X_B,σ_B) are continuously orbit equivalent, then the two-sided topological Markov shifts (\bar X_A,\barσ_A) and (\bar X_B,\barσ_B) are flow equivalent, and hence det(id-A)=det(id-B). As a result, the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X_A,σ_A) and (X_B,σ_B) are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if the Cuntz-Krieger algebras O_A and O_B are isomorphic and det(id-A)=det(id-B).
