A discussion was added to the text on the relation between renormalizable actions and self-replicating actions of a rooted tree. Additionally, several proofs were rewritten to make the arguments easier to follow
A group $Γ$ is said to be finitely non-co-Hopfian, or renormalizable, if there exists a self-embedding $φ\colon Γ\to Γ$ whose image is a proper subgroup of finite index. Such a proper self-embedding is called a renormalization for $Γ$. In this work, we associate a dynamical system to a renormalization $φ$ of $Γ$. The discriminant invariant ${\mathcal D}_φ$ of the associated Cantor dynamical system is a profinite group which is a measure of the asymmetries of the dynamical system. If ${\mathcal D}_φ$ is a finite group for some renormalization, we show that $Γ/C_φ$ is virtually nilpotent, where $C_φ$ is the kernel of the action map. We introduce the notion of a (virtually) renormalizable Cantor action, and show that the action associated to a renormalizable group is virtually renormalizable. We study the properties of virtually renormalizable Cantor actions, and show that virtual renormalizability is an invariant of continuous orbit equivalence. Moreover, the discriminant invariant of a renormalizable Cantor action is an invariant of continuous orbit equivalence. Finally, the notion of a renormalizable Cantor action is related to the notion of a self-replicating group of automorphisms of a rooted tree.
In this paper we show that the invariant Cantor set of period doubling type of any infinitely renormalizable area-preserving map in the universality class of the Eckmann-Koch-Wittwer renormalization fixed point is always contained in a Lipschitz curve but never contained in a smooth curve. This extends previous results by de Carvalho, Lyubich and Martens about strongly dissipative maps of the plane close to unimodal maps to the area-preserving setting. The method used for constructing the Lipschitz curve is very similar to the method used in the dissipative case but proving the nonexistence of…
The period doubling Cantor sets of strongly dissipative Henon-like maps with different average Jacobian are not smoothly conjugated. The Jacobian Rigidity Conjecture says that the period doubling Cantor sets of two-dimensional Henon-like maps with the same average Jacobian are smoothly conjugated. This conjecture is true for average Jacobian zero, e.g. the one-dimensional case. The other extreme case is when the maps preserve area, e.g. the average Jacobian is one. Indeed, the period doubling Cantor set of area-preserving maps in the universality class of the Eckmann-Koch-Wittwer renormalizati…
Three dimensional Hńon-like map $$ F(x,y,z) = (f(x) - ε(x,y,z),\ x,\ δ(x,y,z)) $$ is defined on the cubic box $ B $. An invariant space under renormalization would appear only in higher dimension. Consider renormalizable maps each of which satisfies the condition $$ \partial_y δ\circ F(x,y,z) + \partial_z δ\circ F(x,y,z) \cdot \partial_x δ(x,y,z) \equiv 0 $$ for $ (x,y,z) \in B $. Denote the set of maps satisfying the above condition be $ \mathcal N $. Then the set $ \mathcal N \cap \mathcal I(\bar ε) $ is invariant under the renormalization operator where $ \mathcal I(\bar ε) $ is the set of …
Infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like map in arbitrary finite dimension is considered. The set, $\mathcal N$ of infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like maps satisfying the certain condition is invariant under renormalization operator. The Cantor attractor of infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like map, $F$ in $\mathcal N$ has {\em unbounded geometry} almost everywhere in the parameter space of the universal number which corresponds to the average Jacobian of two dimensional map. This is an extension of the same result in $\mathcal N$ for three dimensional infinitely renormalizable Hénon-like maps.
Grigorchuk and Medynets recently announced that the topological full group of a minimal Cantor Z-action is amenable. They asked whether the statement holds for all minimal Cantor actions of general amenable groups as well. We answer in the negative by producing a minimal Cantor Z^2-action for which the topological full group contains a non-abelian free group.
The AH conjecture relates the low-dimensional homology groups of a groupoid with the abelianization of its topological full group. We show that transformation groupoids of minimal actions of the infinite dihedral group on the Cantor set satisfy this conjecture. The proof uses Kakutani-Rokhlin partitions adapted to such systems.
We prove that commutator subgroups of topological full groups arising from minimal subshifts have exponential growth. We also prove that the measurable full group associated to the countable, measure-preserving, ergodic and hyperfinite equivalence relation is topologically generated by two elements.
The purpose of this note is twofold. In the first part we observe that two finitely generated non-amenable groups are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions. In particular, free groups if different rank admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions unlike in the measurable setting. In the second part we introduce the measured orbit equivalence category of a Cantor minimal system and construct (in certain cases) a representation of this category on the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces. This gives rise to novel fu…
Lorenz maps are maps of the unit interval with one critical point of order rho>1, and a discontinuity at that point. They appear as return maps of leafs of sections of the geometric Lorenz flow. We construct real a priori bounds for renormalizable Lorenz maps with certain monotone combinatorics, and use these bounds to show existence of periodic points of renormalization, as well as existence of Cantor attractors for dynamics of infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps.
In the paper, we consider the full group $[ϕ]$ and topological full group $[[ϕ]]$ of a Cantor minimal system $(X,\f)$. We prove that the commutator subgroups $D([\f])$ and $D([[\f]])$ are simple and show that the groups $D([\f])$ and $D([[\f]])$ completely determine the class of orbit equivalence and flip conjugacy of $\f$, respectively. These results improve the classification found in \cite{gps:1999}. As a corollary of the technique used, we establish the fact that $\f$ can be written as a product of three involutions from $[\f]$.
Let K be a Cantor set embedded in the real line R. Following Funar and Neretin, we define the diffeomorphism group of K as the group of homeomorphisms of K which locally look like a diffeomorphism between two intervals of R. Higman-Thompson's groups Vn appear as subgroups of such groups. In this article, we prove some properties of this group. First, we study the Burnside problem in this group and we prove that any finitely generated subgroup consisting of finite order elements is finite. This property was already proved by Rover in the case of the groups Vn. We also prove that any finitely ge…
We continue to study topological properties of the group Homeo(X) of all homeomorphisms of a Cantor set X with respect to the uniform topology tau, which was started in the paper (S. Bezuglyi, A.H. Dooley, and J. Kwiatkowski, Topologies on the group of homeomorphisms of a Cantor set, ArXiv e-print math.DS/0410507, 2004). We prove that the set of periodic homeomorphisms is tau-dense in Homeo(X) and deduce from this result that the topological group (Homeo(X), tau) has the Rokhlin property, i.e., there exists a homeomorphism whose conjugate class is tau-dense in Homeo(X). We also show that for a…
We consider infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps with real critical exponent $α>1$ and combinatorial type which is monotone and satisfies a long return condition. For these combinatorial types we prove the existence of periodic points of the renormalization operator, and that each map in the limit set of renormalization has an associated unstable manifold. An unstable manifold defines a family of Lorenz maps and we prove that each infinitely renormalizable combinatorial type (satisfying the above conditions) has a unique representative within such a family. We also prove that each infinitely …
The group of $\mathcal C^1$-diffeomorphisms of any sparse Cantor subset of a manifold is countable and discrete (possibly trivial). Thompson's groups come out of this construction when we consider central ternary Cantor subsets of an interval. Brin's higher dimensional generalizations $nV$ of Thompson's group $V$ arise when we consider products of central ternary Cantor sets. We derive that the $\mathcal C^2$-smooth mapping class group of a sparse Cantor sphere pair is a discrete countable group and produce this way versions of the braided Thompson groups.
We describe a self-homeomorphism $R$ of the Cantor set $X$ and then show that its conjugacy class in the Polish group $H(X)$ of all homeomorphisms of $X$ forms a dense $G_δ$ subset of $H(X)$. We also provide an example of a locally compact, second countable topological group which has a dense conjugacy class.
In this work, we investigate the dynamical and geometric properties of weak solenoids, as part of the development of a "calculus of group chains" associated to Cantor minimal actions. The study of the properties of group chains was initiated in the works of McCord 1965 and Fokkink and Oversteegen 2002, to study the problem of determining which weak solenoids are homogeneous continua. We develop an alternative condition for the homogeneity in terms of the Ellis semigroup of the action, then investigate the relationship between non-homogeneity of a weak solenoid and its discriminant invariant, w…
We study amenable minimal Cantor systems of free groups arising from the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and certain Cantor systems. It is shown that every virtually free group admits continuously many amenable minimal Cantor systems whose crossed products are mutually non-isomorphic Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class (with explicitly determined K-theory). The technique developed in our study also enables us to compute the K-theory of certain amenable minimal Cantor systems. We apply it to the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and the products of the odometer transformations, …
We show that the (topological) full group of a minimal pseudogroup over the Cantor set satisfies various rigidity phenomena of topological dynamical and combinatorial nature. Our main result applies to its possible homomorphisms into other groups of homeomorphisms, and implies that arbitrary homomorphisms between the full groups of a vast class of pseudogroups must extend to continuous morphisms between pseudogroups (in particular giving rise to equivariant maps at the level of spaces). As applications, we obtain explicit obstructions to the existence of embeddings between full groups in terms…
A Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action of a countably generated group G on a Cantor space X. Such actions are also called generalized odometers in the literature. In this work, we introduce two new conjugacy invariants for Cantor actions, the stabilizer limit group and the centralizer limit group. An action is wild if the stabilizer limit group is an increasing sequence of stabilizer groups without bound, and otherwise is said to be stable if this group chain is bounded. For Cantor actions by a finitely generated group G, we prove that stable actions satisfy a rigidity principle, a…
In this paper, we study the actions of profinite groups on Cantor sets which arise from representations of Galois groups of certain fields of rational functions. Such representations are associated to polynomials, and they are called profinite iterated monodromy groups. We are interested in a topological invariant of such actions called the asymptotic discriminant. In particular, we give a complete classification by whether the asymptotic discriminant is stable or wild in the case when the polynomial generating the representation is quadratic. We also study different ways in which a wild asymp…
In this paper we continue to explore infinitely renormalizable Hénon maps with small Jacobian. It was shown in [CLM] that contrary to the one-dimensional intuition, the Cantor attractor of such a map is non-rigid and the conjugacy with the one-dimensional Cantor attractor is at most 1/2-Hölder. Another formulation of this phenomenon is that the scaling structure of the Hénon Cantor attractor differs from its one-dimensional counterpart. However, in this paper we prove that the weight assigned by the canonical invariant measure to these bad spots tends to zero on microscopic scales. This phenom…
Giordano, Putnam and Skau showed that topological full groups of Cantor minimal systems are complete invariants for flip conjugacy. We will completely determine the structure of normal subgroups of the topological full group. Moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition for the topological full group to be finitely generated will be given.
H. Lin and the author introduced the notion of approximate conjugacy of dynamical systems. In this paper, we will discuss the relationship between approximate conjugacy and full groups of Cantor minimal systems. An analogue of Glasner-Weiss's theorem will be shown. Approximate conjugacy of dynamical systems on the product of the Cantor set and the circle will also be studied.
In this article we study the centralizer of a minimal aperiodic action of a countable group on the Cantor set (an aperiodic minimal Cantor system). We show that any countable residually finite group is the subgroup of the centralizer of some minimal $\mathbb Z$ action on the Cantor set, and that any countable group is the subgroup of the normalizer of a minimal aperiodic action of an abelian countable free group on the Cantor set. On the other hand we show that for any countable group $G$, the centralizer of any minimal aperiodic $G$-action on the Cantor set is a subgroup of the centralizer of…
We show that the group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set $H(K)$ has ample generics, that is, for every $m$ the diagonal conjugacy action $g\cdot(h_1,h_2,..., h_m)=(gh_1g^{-1},gh_2g^{-1},..., gh_mg^{-1})$ of $H(K)$ on $H(K)^m$ has a comeager orbit. This answers a question of Kechris and Rosendal. We show that the generic tuple in $H(K)^m$ can be taken to be the limit of a certain projective Fraisse family. We also present a proof of the existence of the generic homeomorphism of the Cantor set in the context of the projective Fraisse theory.
In this article, we study the smooth mapping class group of a surface S relative to a given Cantor set, that is the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving smooth diffeomorphisms of S which preserve this Cantor set. When the Cantor set is the standard ternary Cantor set, we prove that the subgroup consisting of diffeomorphisms which are isotopic to the identity on S does not contain any distorted elements. Moreover, we prove a weak Tits alternative for these groups.
Let $Homeo(Ω)$ be the group of all homeomorphisms of a Cantor set $Ω$. We study topological properties of $Homeo(Ω)$ and its subsets with respect to the uniform $(τ)$ and weak $(τ_w)$ topologies. The classes of odometers and periodic, aperiodic, minimal, rank 1 homeomorphisms are considered and the closures of those classes in $τ$ and $τ_w$ are found.
To any continuous eigenvalue of a Cantor minimal system $(X,\,T)$, we associate an element of the dimension group $K^0(X,\,T)$ associated to $(X,\,T)$. We introduce and study the concept of irrational miscibility of a dimension group. The main property of these dimension groups is the absence of irrational values in the additive group of continuous spectrum of their realizations by Cantor minimal systems. The strong orbit equivalence (respectively orbit equivalence) class of a Cantor minimal system associated to an irrationally miscible dimension group $(G,\,u)$ (resp. with trivial infinitesim…
In this note we consider dynamical systems $(X,G)$ on a Cantor set $X$ satisfying some mild technical conditions. The considered class includes, in particular, minimal and transitive aperiodic systems. We prove that two such systems $(X_1,G_1)$ and $(X_2,G_2)$ are orbit equivalent if and only if their full groups are isomorphic as abstract groups. This result is a topological version of the well-known Dye's theorem established originally for ergodic measure-preserving actions.
We introduce the fundamental group ${\mathcal F}(\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ})$ of a uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $G$-system $\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ}$ where $G$ is a countable discrete group. We compute fundamental groups of several uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $G$-systems. We show that if $\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ}$ arises from a free action $ϕ$ of a finitely generated abelian group, then there exists a unital countable subring $R$ of $\mathbb{R}$ such that $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ})=R_{+}^\times$. We also consider the relation between fundamental groups of uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}^n…
This survey is focused on the results related to topologies on the groups of transformations in ergodic theory, Borel, and Cantor dynamics. Various topological properties (density, connectedness, genericity) of these groups and their subsets (subgroups) are studied.
The discriminant group of a minimal equicontinuous action of a group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ is the subgroup of the closure of the action in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, consisting of homeomorphisms which fix a given point. The stabilizer and the centralizer groups associated to the action are obtained as direct limits of sequences of subgroups of the discriminant group with certain properties. Minimal equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets admit a classification by the properties of the stabilizer and centralizer direct limit groups. In this paper, we construct new families of exa…
We study highly dissipative Hénon maps $$ F_{c,b}: (x,y) \mapsto (c-x^2-by, x) $$ with zero entropy. They form a region $Π$ in the parameter plane bounded on the left by the curve $W$ of infinitely renormalizable maps. We prove that Morse-Smale maps are dense in $Π$, but there exist infinitely many different topological types of such maps (even away from $W$). We also prove that in the infinitely renormalizable case, the average Jacobian $b_F$ on the attracting Cantor set $\OO_F$ is a topological invariant. These results come from the analysis of the heteroclinic web of the saddle periodic poi…
We survey, and extend, results on the adjoint action of the homeomorphism group $H(X)$ on the space of surjective continuous maps, $C_s(X)$, where $X$ is a Cantor set. We look also at the restriction of the action to various dynamically defined subsets of $C_s(X)$, e. g. the sets of topologically transitive maps, chain transitive maps, chain mixing maps, etc. In each case, we consider whether there exist elements with a dense conjugacy class and if so, what the generic elements look like.
We consider a minimal equicontinuous action of a finitely generated group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ with invariant probability measure $μ$, and stabilizers of points for such an action. We give sufficient conditions under which there exists a subgroup $H$ of $G$ such that the set of points in $X$ whose stabilizers are conjugate to $H$ has full measure. The conditions are that the action is locally quasi-analytic and locally non-degenerate. An action is locally quasi-analytic if its elements have unique extensions on subsets of uniform diameter. The condition that the action is locally non-degene…
We prove that any countable non-amenable group G admits a free minimal amenable purely infinite action on the non-compact Cantor set. This answers a question of Kellerhals, Monod and Rørdam.
Given a factor map $p : (X,T) \to (Y,S)$ of Cantor minimal systems, we study the relations between the dimension groups of the two systems. First, we interpret the torsion subgroup of the quotient of the dimension groups $K_0(X)/K_0(Y)$ in terms of intermediate extensions which are extensions of $(Y,S)$ by a compact abelian group. Then we show that, by contrast, the existence of an intermediate non-abelian finite group extension can produce a situation where the dimension group of $(Y,S)$ embeds into a proper subgroup of the dimension group of $(X,T)$, yet the quotient of the dimension groups …
We study left orderable groups by using dynamical methods. We apply these techniques to study the space of orderings of these groups. We show for instance that for the case of (non-Abelian) free groups, this space is homeomorphic to the Cantor set. We also study the case of braid groups (for which the space of orderings has isolated points but contains homeomorphic copies of the Cantor set). To do this we introduce the notion of the Conradian soul of an order as the maximal subgroup which is convex and restricted to which the original ordering satisfies the so called conradian property, and we…
In this paper, we consider minimal equicontinuous actions of discrete countably generated groups on Cantor sets, obtained from the arboreal representations of absolute Galois groups of fields. In particular, we study the asymptotic discriminant of these actions. The asymptotic discriminant is an invariant obtained by restricting the action to a sequence of nested clopen sets, and studying the isotropies of the enveloping group actions in such restricted systems. An enveloping (Ellis) group of such an action is a profinite group. A large class of actions of profinite groups on Cantor sets is gi…
A group action has essential holonomy if the set of points with non-trivial holonomy has positive measure. If such an action is topologically free, then having essential holonomy is equivalent to the action not being essentially free, which means that the set of points with non-trivial stabilizer has positive measure. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the property of having essential holonomy and structure of the acting group for minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets. We show that if such a group action is locally quasi-analytic and has essential holonomy, then every c…
Area-preserving maps have been observed to undergo a universal period-doubling cascade, analogous to the famous Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser period doubling cascade in one-dimensional dynamics. A renormalization approach has been used by Eckmann, Koch and Wittwer in a computer-assisted proof of existence of a conservative renormalization fixed point. Furthermore, it has been shown by Gaidashev, Johnson and Martens that infinitely renormalizable maps in a neighborhood of this fixed point admit invariant Cantor sets with vanishing Lyapunov exponents on which dynamics for any two maps is smoothly c…
We show that every minimal action of any finitely generated abelian group on the Cantor set is (topologically) orbit equivalent to an AF relation. As a consequence, this extends the classification up to orbit equivalence of minimal dynamical systems on the Cantor set to include AF relations and Z^d-actions.
A nilpotent Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action $Φ\colon Γ\times \frak{X} \to \frak{X}$ on a Cantor set $\frak{X}$, where $Γ$ contains a finitely-generated nilpotent subgroup $Γ_0 \subset Γ$ of finite index. In this note, we show that these actions are distinguished among general Cantor actions: any effective action of a finitely generated group on a Cantor space, which is continuously orbit equivalent to a nilpotent Cantor action, must itself be a nilpotent Cantor action. As an application of this result, we obtain new invariants of nilpotent Cantor actions under continuous orbit…
We study diagonal actions $φ:\mathbb{F}_2\curvearrowright\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K$ on the Cantor set which are given by $φ_a=\partial_a\timesα,φ_b=\partial_b\timesβ$. Under some restrictions on $α,β$ we compute $K_*(C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2)$. As an application in the case of $α$ is Denjoy homeomorphism of the Cantor set and $β=id$ we will show that $C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2$ is Kirchberg algebra with $K_*(C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2)=(\mathbb{Z}^\infty,\mathbb{Z}^\infty)$. Also we will check that $C^*$-crosse…
Let X be a h-homogeneous zero-dimensional compact Hausdorff space, i.e. X is a Stone dual of a homogeneous Boolean algebra. It is shown that the universal minimal space M(G) of the topological group G=Homeo(X), is the space of maximal chains on X introduced by Uspenskij. If X is metrizable then clearly X is homeomorphic to the Cantor set and the result was already known (Glasner-Weiss 2003). However many new examples arise for non-metrizable spaces. These include, among others, the generalized Cantor sets X={0,1}^{kappa} for non-countable cardinals kappa, and the corona or remainder of omega, …
We give new examples of simple finitely generated groups arising from actions of free abelian groups on the Cantor sets. As particular examples, we discuss groups of interval exchange transformations, and a group naturally associated with the Penrose tilings. Many groups in this class are amenable.
We show that for a minimal, second countable, locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid whose unit space is homeomorphic to the Cantor set, if the groupoid has comparison then the commutator subgroup of its full group is simple. This generalizes a result of Bezuglyi and Medynets for Cantor minimal systems and complements Matui's results for topological full groups.
Each topological group $G$ admits a unique universal minimal dynamical system $(M(G),G)$. When $G$ is a non-compact locally compact group the phase space $M(G)$ of this universal system is non-metrizable. There are however topological groups for which $M(G)$ is the trivial one point system (extremely amenable groups), as well as topological groups $G$ for which $M(G)$ is a metrizable space and for which there is an explicit description of the dynamical system $(M(G),G)$. One such group is the topological group $S_\infty$ of all permutations of the integers ${\mathbb Z}$, with the topology of p…
Using the notion of proper Cantor colorings we prove the following theorem. For any countably infinite group $Γ$, there exists a free continuous action $ζ: Γ\curvearrowright C$ on the Cantor set, which is universal in the following sense: for any free Borel action $α: Γ\curvearrowright X$ on the standard Borel space, there exists an injective Borel map $Θ_α: X\to C$ such that $Θ_α\circ α=ζ\circ Θ_α$. We extend our theorem for (nonfree) Borel $(Γ,Z)$-actions, where $Z$ is a uniformly recurrent subgroup.
