Comparison and Simplicity of Commutator Subgroups of Full Groups

We show that for a minimal, second countable, locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid whose unit space is homeomorphic to the Cantor set, if the groupoid has comparison then the commutator subgroup of its full group is simple. This generalizes a result of Bezuglyi and Medynets for Cantor minimal systems and complements Matui's results for topological full groups.

Finite Representations of the braid group commutator subgroup

We study the representations of the commutator subgroup K_{n} of the braid group B_{n} into a finite group . This is done through a symbolic dynamical system. Some experimental results enable us to compute the number of subgroups of K_{n} of a given (finite) index, and, as a by-product, to recover the well known fact that every representation of K_{n} into S_{r}, with n > r, must be trivial.

On the simplicity of homeomorphism groups of a tilable lamination

We show that the identity component of the group of homeomorphisms that preserve all leaves of a R^d-tilable lamination is simple. Moreover, in the one dimensional case, we show that this group is uniformly perfect. We obtain a similar result for a dense subgroup of homeomorphisms.

Subgroup dynamics and $C^\ast$-simplicity of groups of homeomorphisms

We study the uniformly recurrent subgroups of groups acting by homeomorphisms on a topological space. We prove a general result relating uniformly recurrent subgroups to rigid stabilizers of the action, and deduce a $C^*$-simplicity criterion based on the non-amenability of rigid stabilizers. As an application, we show that Thompson's group $V$ is $C^\ast$-simple, as well as groups of piecewise projective homeomorphisms of the real line. Confined subgroups of Thompson's group $F$ and its embeddings into wobbling groups

We obtain a characterisation of confined subgroups of Thompson's group $F$. As a result, we deduce that orbital graph of a point under action of $F$ has uniformly subexponential growth if and only if this point is fixed by the commutator subgroup. This allows us to prove non-embeddability of $F$ into wobbling groups of graphs with uniformly subexponential growth.

Topological full groups of minimal subshifts with subgroups of intermediate growth

We show that every Grigorchuk group $G_ω$ embeds in (the commutator subgroup of) the topological full group of a minimal subshift. Conjugacy growth of commutators

For the free group $F_r$ on $r>1$ generators (respectively, the free product $G_1 * G_2$ of two nontrivial finite groups $G_1$ and $G_2$), we obtain the asymptotic for the number of conjugacy classes of commutators in $F_r$ (respectively, $G_1 * G_2$) with a given word length in a fixed set of free generators (respectively, the set of generators given by the nontrivial elements of $G_1$ and $G_2$).
