We take the first steps towards a better understanding of continuous orbit equivalence, i.e., topological orbit equivalence with continuous cocycles. First, we characterise continuous orbit equivalence in terms of isomorphisms of C*-crossed products preserving Cartan subalgebras. This is the topological analogue of the classical result by Singer and Feldman-Moore in the measurable setting. Secondly, we turn to continuous orbit equivalence rigidity, i.e., the question whether for certain classes of topological dynamical systems, continuous orbit equivalence implies conjugacy. We show that this is not always the case by constructing topological dynamical systems (actions of free abelian groups, and also non-abelian free groups) which are continuously orbit equivalent but not conjugate. Furthermore, we prove positive rigidity results. For instance, it turns out that general topological Bernoulli actions are rigid when compared with actions of nilpotent groups, and that topological Bernoulli actions of duality groups are rigid when compared with actions of solvable groups. The same is true for certain subshifts of full shifts over finite alphabets.
Drimbe and Vaes proved an orbit equivalence superrigidity theorem for left-right wreath product actions in the measurable setting. We establish the counterpart result in the topological setting for continuous orbit equivalence. This gives us minimal, topologically free actions that are continuous orbit equivalence superrigid. One main ingredient for the proof is to show continuous cocycle superrigidity for certain generalized full shifts, extending our previous result with Chung.
We study rigidity properties of lattices in hyperbolic n-space with n>2 and of surface groups in the context of (integrable) measure equivalence. The results for lattices in hyperbolic n-space with n>2 are generalizations of Mostow rigidity; they include a cocycle version of strong rigidity and an integrable measure equivalence classification. Despite the lack of Mostow rigidity for n=2 we show that cocompact lattices in SL(2,R) allow a similar integrable measure equivalence classification.
We prove that the solid ergodicity property is stable with respect to taking coinduction for a fairly large class of coinduced action. More precisely, assume that $Σ<Γ$ are countable groups such that $gΣg^{-1}\cap Σ$ is finite for any $g\inΓ\setminusΣ$. Then any measure preserving action $Σ\curvearrowright X_0$ gives rise to a solidly ergodic equivalence relation if and only if the equivalence relation of the associated coinduced action $Γ\curvearrowright X$ is solidly ergodic. We also obtain orbit equivalence rigidity for such actions by showing that the orbit equivalence relation of a rigid …
We show that the stabilization of any countable ergodic p.m.p. equivalence relation which is not Schmidt, i.e. admits no central sequences in its full group, always gives rise to a stable equivalence relation with a unique stable decomposition, providing the first non-strongly ergodic such examples. In the proof, we moreover establish a new local characterization of the Schmidt property. We also prove some new structural results for product equivalence relations and orbit equivalence relations of diagonal product actions.
We study Popa's notion of rigidity for equivalence relations induced by actions on homogeneous spaces. For any lattices $Γ,Λ$ in a semisimple Lie group $G$ with finite center and no compact factors we prove that the action $Γ\curvearrowright G/Λ$ is rigid. If in addition $G$ has property (T) then we derive that the von Neumann algebra $L^{\infty}(G/Λ)\rtimesΓ$ has property (T). We also show that if the adjoint action of $G$ on the Lie algebra of $G$ - $\{0\}$ is amenable (e.g. if $G=SL_2(\Bbb R)$), then any ergodic subequivalence relation of the orbit equivalence relation of the action $Γ\curv…
We prove that for any two continuous minimal (topologically free) actions of the infinite dihedral group on an infinite compact Hausdorff space, they are continuously orbit equivalent only if they are conjugate. We also show the above fails if we replace the infinite dihedral group with certain other virtually cyclic groups, e.g. the direct product of the integer group with any non-abelian finite simple group.
It is shown that every accessible group which is integrable orbit equivalent to a free group is virtually free. Moreover, we also show that any integrable orbit-equivalence between finitely generated groups extends to their end compactifications.
Consider two $k$-gons $P$ and $Q$. We say that the billiard flows in $P$ and $Q$ are homotopically equivalent if the set of conjugacy classes in the fundamental group of $P$ which contain a periodic billiard orbit agrees with the analogous set for $Q$. We study this equivalence relationship and compare it to the equivalence relations, order equivalence and code equivalence, introduced in \cite{BT1,BT2}. In particular we show if $P$ is a rational polygon, and $Q$ is homotopically equivalent to $P$, then $P$ and $Q$ are similar, or affinely similar if all sides of $P$ are vertical and horizontal…
We study equivalence relations that arise from translation actions $Γ\curvearrowright G$ which are associated to dense embeddings $Γ<G$ of countable groups into second countable locally compact groups. Assuming that $G$ is simply connected and the action $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is strongly ergodic, we prove that $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is orbit equivalent to another such translation action $Λ\curvearrowright H$ if and only if there exists an isomorphism $δ:G\rightarrow H$ such that $δ(Γ)=Λ$. If $G$ is moreover a real algebraic group, then we establish analogous rigidity results for the translation…
Let $Γ_1,\dots,Γ_n$ be hyperbolic, property (T) groups, for some $n\ge 1$. We prove that if a product $Γ_1\times\dots\timesΓ_n \curvearrowright X_1\times\dots\times X_n$ of measure preserving actions is stably orbit equivalent to a measure preserving action $Λ\curvearrowright Y$, then $Λ\curvearrowright Y$ is induced from an action $Λ_0\curvearrowright Y_0$ such that there exists a direct product decomposition $Λ_0=Λ_1\times\dots\timesΛ_n$ into $n$ infinite groups. Moreover, there exists a measure preserving action $Λ_i\curvearrowright Y_i$ that is stably orbit equivalent to $Γ_i\curvearrowrig…
We single out a large class of groups ${\mathscr{M}}$ for which the following unique prime factorization result holds: if $Γ_1,\dots,Γ_n\in {\mathscr{M}}$ and $Γ_1\times\dots\timesΓ_n$ is measure equivalent to a product $Λ_1\times\dots\timesΛ_m$ of infinite icc groups, then $n \ge m$, and if $n = m$ then, after permutation of the indices, $Γ_i$ is measure equivalent to $Λ_i$, for all $1\leq i\leq n$. This provides an analogue of Monod and Shalom's theorem \cite{MS02} for groups that belong to ${\mathscr{M}}$. Class ${\mathscr{M}}$ is constructed using groups whose von Neumann algebras admit an…
We study equivalence relations $\mathcal R(Γ\curvearrowright G)$ that arise from left translation actions of countable groups on their profinite completions. Under the assumption that the action $Γ\curvearrowright G$ is free and has spectral gap, we describe precisely when $\mathcal R(Γ\curvearrowright G)$ is orbit equivalent or Borel reducible to another such equivalence relation $\mathcal R(Λ\curvearrowright H)$. As a consequence, we provide explicit uncountable families of free ergodic probability measure preserving (p.m.p.) profinite actions of $SL_2(\mathbb Z)$ and its non-amenable subgro…
We prove that if a measure distal action $α$ of a countable group $Γ$ is weakly contained in a strongly ergodic probability measure preserving action $β$ of $Γ$, then $α$ is a factor of $β$. In particular, this applies when $α$ is a compact action. As a consequence, we show that the weak equivalence class of any strongly ergodic action completely remembers the weak isomorphism class of the maximal distal factor arising in the Furstenberg-Zimmer Structure Theorem.
We study Palm measures of determinantal point processes with $J$-Hermitian correlation kernels. A point process $\mathbb{P}$ on the punctured real line $\mathbb{R}^* = \mathbb{R}_{+} \sqcup \mathbb{R}_{-}$ is said to be $\textit{balanced rigid}$ if for any precompact subset $B\subset \mathbb{R}^*$, the $\textit{difference}$ between the numbers of particles of a configuration inside $B\cap \mathbb{R}_{+}$ and $B\cap \mathbb{R}_{-}$ is almost surely determined by the configuration outside $B$. The point process $\mathbb{P}$ is said to have the $\textit{balanced Palm equivalence property}$ if any…
We will study torus actions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras trivially acting on its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebras from the view points of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts and flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts.
We survey some of the progress made recently in the classification of von Neumann algebras arising from countable groups and their measure preserving actions on probability spaces. We emphasize results which provide classes of (W$^*$-superrigid) actions that can be completely recovered from their von Neumann algebras and II$_1$ factors that have a unique Cartan subalgebra. We also present cocycle superrigidity theorems and some of their applications to orbit equivalence. Finally, we discuss several recent rigidity results for von Neumann algebras associated to groups.
In this paper, we consider semigroup actions of discrete countable semigroups on compact spaces by surjective local homeomorphisms. We introduce notions of continuous one-sided orbit equivalence and continuous orbit equivalence for semigroup actions, and characterize them in terms of the corresponding semi-groupoids and transformation groupoids respectively. Finally, we consider the case of semigroup actions by homeomorphisms and relate continuous orbit equivalence of semigroup actions to that of group actions.
We will study several subgroups of continuous full groups of one-sided topological Markov shifts from the view points of cohomology groups of full group actions on the shift spaces. We also study continuous orbit equivalence and strongly continuous orbit equivalence in terms of these subgroups of the continuous full groups and the cohomology groups.
Given an ergodic probability measure preserving dynamical system $\G\acts (X,μ)$, where $\G$ is a finitely generated countable group, we show that the asymptotic growth of the number of finite models for the dynamics, in the sense of sofic approximations, is an invariant of orbit equivalence. We then prove an additivity formula for free products with amenable (possibly trivial) amalgamation. In particular, we obtain purely combinatorial proofs of several results in orbit equivalence theory.
In the late $70$'s Feldman and Moore defined the cohomology associated to a countable equivalence relation with coefficients in an Abelian Polish group. When the equivalence relation is the orbital one, that is it is induced by a measure preserving action of a countable group $Γ$ on a standard Borel probability space $(X,μ)$, it still makes sense to consider the Feldmann-Moore $1$-cohomology with $G$-coefficients, where this time $G$ can be any topological group. The latter cohomology, denoted by $H^1(Γ\curvearrowright X;G)$, is very misterious and hard to compute, except for some exceptional …
Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.
We extend ultragraph shift spaces and the realization of ultragraph C*-algebras as partial crossed products to include ultragraphs with sinks (under a mild condition, called (RFUM2), which allow us to dismiss the use of filters) and we describe the associated transformation groupoid. Using these characterizations we study continuous orbit equivalence of ultragraph shift spaces (via groupoids) and KMS and ground states (via partial crossed products).
We study KMS states for gauge actions with potential functions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras whose underlying one-sided topological Markov shifts are continuous orbit equivalent. As a result, we have a certain relationship between topological entropy of continuous orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts.
We study asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence of Smale spaces. We prove that two irreducible Smale spaces are flip conjugate if and only if there exists a periodic point preserving homeomorphism giving an asymptotic continuous orbit equivalence between them. We introduce a notion of asymptotic topological conjugacy and asymptotic flip conjugacy in Smale spaces and characterize them in terms of the associated Ruelle algebras with dual actioons. We finally characterize the flip conjugacy classes of irreducible two-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of the associated Ruelle algebras with…
We study rigidity of rational maps that come from Newton's root finding method for polynomials of arbitrary degrees. We establish dynamical rigidity of these maps: each point in the Julia set of a Newton map is either rigid (i.e. its orbit can be distinguished in combinatorial terms from all other orbits), or the orbit of this point eventually lands in the filled-in Julia set of a polynomial-like restriction of the original map. As a corollary, we show that the Julia sets of Newton maps in many non-trivial cases are locally connected; in particular, every cubic Newton map without Siegel points…
We study rational self-maps of $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ whose critical points all have finite forward orbit. Thurston's rigidity theorem states that outside a single well-understood family, there are finitely many such maps over $\mathbb{C}$ of fixed degree and critical orbit length. We provide an algebraic proof of this fact for tamely ramified maps for which at least one of the critical points is periodic. We also produce wildly ramified counterexamples.

We initiate a quantitative study of measure equivalence (and orbit equivalence) between finitely generated groups, which extends the classical setting of $\mathrm L^p$ measure equivalence. In this paper, our main focus will be on amenable groups, for which we prove both rigidity and flexibility results. On the rigidity side, we prove a general monotonicity property satisfied by the isoperimetric profile, which implies in particular its invariance under $\mathrm L^1$ measure equivalence. This yields explicit "lower bounds" on how integrable a measure coupling between two amenable groups can be.…
The $f$-invariant is a notion of entropy for probability-measure-preserving actions of free groups. We show it is invariant under bounded orbit-equivalence.
It is proven that the orbit-equivalence class of any essentially free probability-measure-preserving action of a free group $G$ is weakly dense in the space of actions of $G$.
We prove that a topological homeomorphism conjugating two generic 1-parameter unfoldings of 1-variable complex analytic resonant diffeomorphisms is holomorphic or anti-holomorphic by restriction to the unperturbed parameter. We provide examples that show that the genericity hypothesis is necessary. Moreover we characterize the possible behavior of conjugacies for the unperturbed parameter in the general case. In particular they are always real analytic outside of the origin. We describe the structure of the limits of orbits when we approach the unperturbed parameter. The proof of the rigidity …
We give a new proof of a theorem of Giordano, Putnam and Skau characterizing orbit equivalence of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor space in terms of their sets of invariant Borel probability measures. The proof is based on a strengtehning of a theorem of Krieger concerning minimal actions of certain locally finite groups of homeomorphisms, and we also give a new proof of the Giordano--Putnam--Skau characterization of orbit equivalence for these actions.
The main result of the paper is classification of free multidimensional Borel flows up to Lebesgue Orbit Equivalence, by which we understand an orbit equivalence that preserves the Lebesgue measure on each orbit. Two non smooth Euclidean flows are shown to be Lebesgue Orbit Equivalence if and only if they admit the same number of invariant ergodic probability measures.
We show that every uniquely ergodic minimal Cantor system is topological orbit equivalent to the natural extension of a numeration scale associated to a logistic map.
Free Borel $\mathbb{R}^{d}$-flows are smoothly equivalent if there is a Borel bijection between the phase spaces that maps orbits onto orbits and is a $C^{\infty}$-smooth orientation preserving diffeomorphism between orbits. We show that all free non-tame Borel $\mathbb{R}^{d}$-flows are smoothly equivalent in every dimension $d \ge 2$. This answers a question of B. Miller and C. Rosendal.
We show that if a countable group $G$ is the free product of infinite abelian groups, then for every free, probability-measure-preserving (p.m.p.) action of $G$, its orbit equivalence class is weakly dense in the space of p.m.p. actions of $G$. This extends Lewis Bowen's result for free groups.
We show that a self orbit equivalence of a transitive Anosov flow on a $3$-manifold which is homotopic to identity has to either preserve every orbit or the Anosov flow is $\mathbb{R}$-covered and the orbit equivalence has to be of a specific type. This result shows that one can remove a relatively unnatural assumption in a result of Farrell and Gogolev about the topological rigidity of bundles supporting a fiberwise Anosov flow when the fiber is $3$-dimensional.
