Let X be an infinite compact metric space with finite covering dimension and let h be a minimal homeomorphism of X. Let A be the associated crossed product C*-algebra. We show that A has tracial rank zero whenever the image of K_0 (A) in the affine functions on the tracial state space of A is dense. As a consequence, we show that these crossed product C*-algebras are in fact simple AH algebras with real rank zero. When X is connected and h is further assumed to be uniquely ergodic, then the above happens if and only if the rotation number associated to h has irrational values.
By applying the classification theorem for nuclear simple C*-algebras with tracial rank zero, we show that two such dynamical systems have isomorphic crossed products if and only if they have isomorphic scaled ordered K-theory.
We introduce a subclass of recursive subhomogeneous algebras, in which each of the pullback maps is diagonal in a suitable sense. We define the notion of a diagonal map between two such algebras and show that every simple inductive limit of these algebras with diagonal bonding maps has stable rank one. As an application, we prove that for any infinite compact metric space $T$ and minimal homeomorphism $h\colon T\to T$, the associated dynamical crossed product $\mathrm{C^*}(\mathbb{Z},T,h)$ has stable rank one. This affirms a conjecture of Archey, Niu, and Phillips. We also show that the Toms-W…
Let $φ:X\to X$ be a homeomorphism of a compact metric space $X$. For any continuous function $F:X\to \mathbb{R}$ there is a one-parameter group $α^{F}$ of automorphisms on the crossed product $C^*$-algebra $C(X)\rtimes_φ\mathbb{Z}$ defined such that $α^{F}_{t}(fU)=fUe^{-itF}$ when $f \in C(X)$ and $U$ is the canonical unitary in the construction of the crossed product. In this paper we study the KMS states for these flows by developing an intimate relation to the ergodic theory of non-singular transformations and show that the structure of KMS-states can be very rich and complicated. Our resul…
We define centrally large subalgebras of simple unital C*-algebras, strengthening the definition of large subalgebras in previous work. We prove that if A is any infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra which contains a centrally large subalgebra with stable rank one, then A has stable rank one. We also prove that large subalgebras of crossed product type are automatically centrally large. We use these results to prove that if X is a compact metric space which has a surjective continuous map to the Cantor set, and h is a minimal homeomorphism of X, then C* (Z, X, h) has stable r…
Building on an argument by Toms and Winter, we show that if $A$ is a simple, separable, unital, $\mathcal{Z}$-stable C*-algebra, then the crossed product of $C(X,A)$ by an automorphism is also Z-stable, provided that the automorphism induces a minimal homeomorphism on $X$. As a consequence, we observe that if $A$ is nuclear and purely infinite then the crossed product is a Kirchberg algebra.
We construct centrally large subalgebras in crossed products of $C (X, D)$ by automorphisms in which $D$ is simple, $X$ is compact metrizable, the automorphism induces a minimal homeomorphism of $X$, and a mild technical assumption holds. We use this construction to prove structural properties of the crossed product, such as (tracial) $Z$-stability, stable rank one, real rank zero, and pure infiniteness, in a number of examples. Our examples are not accessible via methods based on finite Rokhlin dimension, either because $D$ is not $Z$-stable or because $X$ is infinite dimensional.
We show that if X is a finite dimensional locally compact Hausdorff space, then the crossed product of C_0(X) by any automorphism has finite nuclear dimension. This generalizes previous results, in which the automorphism was required to be free. As an application, we show that group C*-algebras of certain non-nilpotent groups have finite nuclear dimension.

For minimal unique ergodic diffeomorphisms $α_n$ of $S^{2n+1} (n>0)$ and $α_m$ of $S^{2m+1}(m>0)$, the $C^*$-crossed product algebra $C(S^{2n+1})\rtimes_{α_n} \mathbb{Z}$ is isomorphic to $C(S^{2m+1})\rtimes_{α_m} \mathbb{Z}$ even though $n\neq m$ . However, by cyclic cohomology, we show that smooth crossed product algebra $C^\infty(S^{2n+1})\rtimes_{α_n} \mathbb{Z}$ is not isomorphic to $C^\infty(S^{2m+1})\rtimes_{α_m} \mathbb{Z}$ if $n\neq m$.
In this article we construct two minimal unique ergodic diffeomorphisms $α$ and $β$ on $S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8} $. We will show that $C(S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8}) \rtimes_α\mathbb{Z} $ and $C(S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8})\rtimes_β\mathbb{Z} $ are equivalent to each other, while $C^\infty (S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8})\rtimes_α\mathbb{Z} $ and $C^\infty(S^3 \times S^{6} \times S^{8} )\rtimes_β\mathbb{Z} $ are not.
The Lefschetz fixed point theorem provides a powerful obstruction to the existence of minimal homeomorphisms on well-behaved spaces such as finite CW-complexes. We show that these obstructions do not hold for more general spaces. More precisely, minimal homeomorphisms are constructed on space with prescribed $K$-theory or cohomology. We also allow for some control of the map on $K$-theory and cohomology induced from these minimal homeomorphisms. This allows for the construction of many minimal homeomorphisms that are not homotopic to the identity. Applications to $C^*$-algebras will be discuss…
We prove a generalized version of Powers' averaging property that characterizes simplicity of reduced crossed products $C(X) \rtimes_λG$, where $G$ is a countable discrete group, and $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space which $G$ acts on minimally by homeomorphisms. As a consequence, we generalize results of Hartman and Kalantar on unique stationarity to the state space of $C(X) \rtimes_λG$ and to Kawabe's generalized space of amenable subgroups $\operatorname{Sub}_a(X,G)$. This further lets us generalize a result of the first named author and Kalantar on simplicity of intermediate C*-algebras. We…
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metric space and let $h$ be a minimal homeomorphism of $X$. We prove that the radius of comparison of the transformation group C*-algebra of $h$ is at most $1$ plus $36$ times the mean dimension of $h$.
We introduce a type of zero-dimensional dynamical system (a pair consisting of a totally disconnected compact metrizable space along with a homeomorphism of that space), which we call "fiberwise essentially minimal", and we prove that the associated crossed product $ C^* $-algebra of such a system is an AT-algebra. Under the additional assumption that the system has no periodic points, we prove that the associated crossed product $ C^* $-algebra has real rank zero, which tells us that such $ C^* $-algebras are classifiable by $ K $-theory. We show that the definition of fiberwise essentially m…
We introduce a class of recursive subhomogeneous algebras that we call diagonal subhomogeneous and we give a notion of diagonal maps between these algebras. We show that any simple limit of diagonal subhomogeneous algebras with diagonal maps has stable rank one. As an application we show that for any minimal homeomorphism of a compact Hausdorff space the associated crossed product has stable rank one.
Let $X$ be an infinite compact metrizable space, and let $σ: X\to X$ be a minimal homeomorphism. Suppose that $(X, σ)$ has zero mean topological dimension. The associated C*-algebra $A=\mathrm{C}(X)\rtimes_σ\mathbb Z$ is shown to absorb the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal Z$ tensorially, i.e., $A\cong A\otimes\mathcal Z$. This implies that $A$ is classifiable when $(X, σ)$ is uniquely ergodic. Moreover, without any assumption on the mean dimension, it is shown that $A\otimes A$ always absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra.
For a given discrete group $G$, we apply results of Kirchberg on exact and injective tensor products of $C^*$-algebras to give an explicit description of the minimal exact correspondence crossed-product functor and the maximal injective crossed-product functor for $G$ in the sense of Buss, Echterhoff and Willett. In particular, we show that the former functor dominates the latter.
A crossed product functor is said to be injective if it takes injective morphisms to injective morphisms. In this paper we show that every locally compact group $G$ admits a maximal injective crossed product $A\mapsto A\rtimes_{\inj}G$. Moreover, we give an explicit construction of this functor that depends only on the maximal crossed product and the existence of $G$-injective $C^*$-algebras; this is a sort of a `dual' result to the construction of the minimal exact crossed product functor, the latter having been studied for its relationship to the Baum-Connes conjecture. It turns out that $\r…
We bound the nuclear dimension of crossed products associated to some partial actions of finite groups or $\mathbb{Z}$ on finite dimensional locally compact Hausdorff second countable spaces. Our results apply to globalizable partial actions, finite group partial actions, minimal partial automorphisms, and partial automorphisms acting on zero-dimensional spaces, or a class of one dimensional spaces, containing $1$-dimensional CW complexes. This extends work on global systems by Hirshberg and Wu.
We extend Matui's notion of almost finiteness to general etale groupoids and show that the reduced groupoid C*-algebras of minimal almost finite groupoids have stable rank one. The proof follows a new strategy, which can be regarded as a local version of the large subalgebra argument. The following three are the main consequences of our result. (i) For any group of (local) subexponential growth and for any its minimal action admitting a totally disconnected free factor, the crossed product has stable rank one. (ii) Any countable amenable group admits a minimal action on the Cantor set all whos…
Given a locally compact group $G$, we study the smallest exact crossed-product functor $(A,G,α)\mapsto A\rtimes_{\mathcal E} G$ on the category of $G$-$C^*$-dynamical systems. As an outcome, we show that the smallest exact crossed-product functor is automatically Morita compatible, and hence coincides with the functor $\rtimes_{\mathcal{E}}$ as introduced by Baum, Guentner, and Willett in their reformulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture (see [2]). We show that the corresponding group algebra $C_{\mathcal{E}}^*(G)$ always coincides with the reduced group algebra, thus showing that the new form…
We show that all amenable, minimal actions of a large class of nonamenable countable groups on compact metric spaces have dynamical comparison. This class includes all nonamenable hyperbolic groups, many HNN-extensions, nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups, a large class of amalgamated free products, lattices in many Lie groups, $\widetilde{A}_2$-groups, as well as direct products of the above with arbitrary countable groups. As a consequence, crossed products by amenable, minimal and topologically free actions of such groups on compact metric spaces are Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class, and…
It is now well known that a simple graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(E)$ of a directed graph $E$ is either AF or purely infinite. In this paper, we address the question of whether this is the case for labeled graph $C^*$-algebras recently introduced by Bates and Pask as one of the generalizations of graph $C^*$-algebras, and show that there exists a family of simple unital labeled graph $C^*$-algebras which are neither AF nor purely infinite. Actually these algebras are shown to be isomorphic to crossed products $C(X)\times_T \mathbb Z$ where the dynamical systems $(X,T)$ are Cantor minimal subshifts. …
