We extend Matui's notion of almost finiteness to general etale groupoids and show that the reduced groupoid C*-algebras of minimal almost finite groupoids have stable rank one. The proof follows a new strategy, which can be regarded as a local version of the large subalgebra argument. The following three are the main consequences of our result. (i) For any group of (local) subexponential growth and for any its minimal action admitting a totally disconnected free factor, the crossed product has stable rank one. (ii) Any countable amenable group admits a minimal action on the Cantor set all whose minimal extensions form the crossed product of stable rank one. (iii) For any amenable group, the crossed product of the universal minimal action has stable rank one.
This is a survey of the recent development of the study of topological full groups of etale groupoids on the Cantor set. Etale groupoids arise from dynamical systems, e.g. actions of countable discrete groups, equivalence relations. Minimal Z-actions, minimal Z^N-actions and one-sided shifts of finite type are basic examples. We are interested in algebraic, geometric and analytic properties of topological full groups. More concretely, we discuss simplicity of commutator subgroups, abelianization, finite generation, cohomological finiteness properties, amenability, the Haagerup property, and so…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a locally compact $σ$-compact Hausdorff ample groupoid on a compact space. In this paper, we further examine the (ubiquitous) fiberwise amenability introduced by the author and Jianchao Wu for $\mathcal{G}$. We define the corresponding concepts of Følner sequences and Banach densities for $\mathcal{G}$, based on which, we establish a topological groupoid version of the Ornstein-Weiss quasi-tilling theorem. This leads to the notion of almost finiteness in measure for ample groupoids as a weaker version of Matui's almost finiteness. As applications, we first show that $C^*_r…
We discuss the interplay between K-theoretical dynamics and the structure theory for certain C*-algebras arising from crossed products. For noncommutative C*-systems we present notions of minimality and topological transitivity in the K-theoretic framework which are used to prove structural results for reduced crossed products. In the presence of sufficiently many projections we associate to each noncommutative C*-system (A,G) a type semigroup S(A,G) which reflects much of the spirit of the underlying action. We characterize purely infinite as well as stably finite crossed products by means of…
We study the connection between the Baum-Connes conjecture for an ample groupoid $G$ with coefficient $A$ and the Künneth formula for the K-theory of tensor products by the crossed product $A\rtimes_r G$. To do so we develop the machinery of Going-Down functors for ample groupoids. As an application we prove that both the uniform Roe algebra of a coarse space which uniformly embeds into a Hilbert space and the maximal Roe algebra of a space admitting a fibred coarse embedding into a Hilbert space satisfy the Künneth formula. We also provide a stability result for the Künneth formula using cont…
We develop a dynamical version of some of the theory surrounding the Toms-Winter conjecture for simple separable nuclear C*-algebras and study its connections to the C*-algebra side via the crossed product. We introduce an analogue of hyperfiniteness for free actions of amenable groups on compact spaces and show that it plays the role of Z-stability in the Toms-Winter conjecture in its relation to dynamical comparison, and also that it implies Z-stability of the crossed product. This property, which we call almost finiteness, generalizes Matui's notion of the same name from the zero-dimensiona…
Working within the framework of free actions of countable amenable groups on compact metrizable spaces, we show that the small boundary property is equivalent to a density version of almost finiteness, which we call almost finiteness in measure, and that under this hypothesis the properties of almost finiteness, comparison, and $m$-comparison for some nonnegative integer $m$ are all equivalent. The proof combines an Ornstein-Weiss tiling argument with the use of zero-dimensional extensions which are measure-isomorphic over singleton fibres. These kinds of extensions are also employed to show t…
We give a general method for computing the cyclic cohomology of crossed products by etale groupoids, extending the Feigin-Tsygan-Nistor spectral sequences. In particular we extend the computations performed by Brylinski, Burghelea,Connes and Nistor for the convolution algebra -of compactly supported smooth functions- of an etale groupoid, removing the Hausdorffness assumption and including the computation of the hyperbolic components. Examples like group actions on manifolds and foliations are considered.
We study a notion of residual finiteness for continuous actions of discrete groups on compact Hausdorff spaces and how it relates to the existence of norm microstates for the reduced crossed product. Our main result asserts that an action of a free group on a zero-dimensional compact metrizable space is residually finite if and only if its reduced crossed product admits norm microstates, i.e., is an MF algebra.
We develop a framework suitable for obtaining simplicity criteria for reduced $C^*$-algebras of Hausdorff etale groupoids. This is based on the study of certain non-degenerate $C^*$-subalgebras (in the case of groupoids, the $C^*$-algebra of the interior isotropy bundle), for which one can control (non-unique) state extensions to the ambient C*-algebra. As an application, we give simplicity criteria for reduced crossed products of abelian $C^*$-algebras by discrete groups.

We generalize Renault's notion of measurewise amenability to actions of second countable, Hausdorff, étale groupoids on separable $C^*$-algebras and show that measurewise amenability characterizes nuclearity of the crossed product whenever the $C^*$-algebra acted on is nuclear. In the more general context of Fell bundles over second countable, Hausdorff, étale groupoids, we introduce a version of Exel's approximation property. We prove that the approximation property implies nuclearity of the cross-sectional algebra whenever the unit bundle is nuclear. For Fell bundles associated to groupoid a…
Suppose $A$ is a $C^*$-algebra and $H$ is a $C^*$-correspondence over $A$. If $H$ is regular in the sense that the left action of $A$ is faithful and is given by compact operators, then we compute the $K$-theory of $\mathcal{O}_A(H) \rtimes \mathbb{T}$ where the action is the usual gauge action. The case where $A$ is an AF-algebra is carefully analyzed. In particular, if $A$ is AF, we show $\mathcal{O}_A(H) \rtimes \mathbb{T}$ is AF. Combining this with Takai duality and an AF-embedding theorem of N. Brown, we show the conditions AF-embeddability, quasidiagonality, and stable finiteness are eq…
Connes showed that spectral triples encode (noncommutative) metric information. Further, Connes and Moscovici in their metric bundle construction showed that, as with the Takesaki duality theorem, forming a crossed product spectral triple can substantially simplify the structure. In a recent paper, Bellissard, Marcolli and Reihani (among other things) studied in depth metric notions for spectral triples and crossed product spectral triples for $Z$-actions, with applications in number theory and coding theory. In the work of Connes and Moscovici, crossed products involving groups of diffeomorph…
Twisted étale groupoid algebras have been studied recently in the algebraic setting by several authors in connection with an abstract theory of Cartan pairs of rings. In this paper, we show that extensions of ample groupoids correspond in a precise manner to extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups. In particular, discrete twists over ample groupoids correspond to certain abelian extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups and we show that they are classified by Lausch's second cohomology group of an inverse semigroup. The cohomology group structure corresponds to the Baer sum operation on twists…
Motivated by classical facts concerning closed manifolds, we introduce a strong finiteness property in K-homology. We say that a C*-algebra has uniformly summable K-homology if all its K-homology classes can be represented by Fredholm modules which are finitely summable over the same dense subalgebra, and with the same degree of summability. We show that two types of C*-algebras associated to hyperbolic groups - the C*-crossed product for the boundary action, and the reduced group C*-algebra - have uniformly summable K-homology. We provide explicit summability degrees, as well as explicit fini…
Let $α: G\curvearrowright X$ be a continuous action of an infinite countable group on a compact Hausdorff space. We show that, under the hypothesis that the action $α$ is topologically free and has no $G$-invariant regular Borel probability measure on $X$, dynamical comparison implies that the reduced crossed product of $α$ is purely infinite and simple. This result, as an application, shows a dichotomy between stable finiteness and pure infiniteness for reduced crossed products arising from actions satisfying dynamical comparison. We also introduce the concepts of paradoxical comparison and t…
We study simplicity and pure infiniteness criteria for C*-algebras associated to inverse semigroup actions by Hilbert bimodules and to Fell bundles over etale not necessarily Hausdorff groupoids. Inspired by recent work of Exel and Pitts, we introduce essential crossed products for which there are such criteria. In our approach the major role is played by a generalised expectation with values in the local multiplier algebra. We give a long list of equivalent conditions characterising when the essential and reduced C*-algebras coincide. Our most general simplicity and pure infiniteness criteria…
Let $α: G\curvearrowright X$ be a minimal free continuous action of an infinite countable amenable group on an infinite compact metrizable space. In this paper, under the hypothesis that the invariant ergodic probability Borel measure space $E_G(X)$ is compact and zero-dimensional, we show that the action $α$ has the small boundary property. This partially answers an open problem in dynamical systems that asks whether a minimal free action of an amenable group has the small boundary property if its space $M_G(X)$ of invariant Borel probability measures forms a Bauer simplex. In addition, under…
We prove that if A is a σ-unital exact C*-algebra of real rank zero, then every state on K_0(A) is induced by a 2-quasitrace on A. This yields a generalisation of Rainone's work on pure infiniteness and stable finiteness of crossed products to the non-unital case. It also applies to k-graph algebras associated to row-finite k-graphs with no sources. We show that for any k-graph whose C*-algebra is unital and simple, either every twisted C*-algebra associated to that k-graph is stably finite, or every twisted C*-algebra associated to that k-graph is purely infinite. Finally we provide sufficien…
We study the interplay of C*-dynamics and K-theory. Notions of chain recurrence for transformations groups (X,G) and MF actions for non-commutative C*-dynamical systems (A,G) are translated into K-theoretical language, where purely algebraic conditions are shown to be necessary and sufficient for a reduced crossed product to admit norm microstates. We are particularly interested in actions of free groups on AF algebras, in which case we prove that a K-theoretic coboundary condition determines whether or not the reduced crossed product is a Matricial Field (MF) algebra. One upshot is the equiva…
We develop a generalization of quantitative $K$-theory, which we call controlled $K$-theory. It is powerful enough to study the $K$-theory of crossed product of $C^*$-algebras by action of étale groupoids and discrete quantum groups. In this article, we will use it to study groupoids crossed products. We define controlled assembly maps, which factorize the Baum-Connes assembly maps, and define the controlled Baum-Connes conjecture. We relate the controlled conjecture for groupoids to the classical conjecture, and to the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture. This allows to give applications to Coarse …
We describe representations of groupoid C*-algebras on Hilbert modules over arbitrary C*-algebras by a universal property. For Hilbert space representations, our universal property is equivalent to Renault's Integration-Disintegration Theorem. For a locally compact group, it is related to the automatic continuity of measurable group representations. It implies known descriptions of groupoid C*-algebras as crossed products for étale groupoids and transformation groupoids of group actions on spaces.
We develop the notion of Rokhlin dimension for partial actions of finite groups, extending the well-established theory for global systems. The partial setting exhibits phenomena that cannot be expected for global actions, usually stemming from the fact that virtually all averaging arguments for finite group actions completely break down for partial systems. For example, fixed point algebra and crossed product are not in general Morita equivalent, and there is in general no local approximation of the crossed product $A\rtimes G$ by matrices over $A$. By using decomposition arguments for partial…
Coactions of Hopf C*-bimodules simultaneously generalize coactions of Hopf C*-algebras and actions of groupoids. Following an approach of Baaj and Skandalis, we construct reduced crossed products and establish a duality for fine coactions. Examples of coactions arise from Fell bundles on groupoids and actions of a groupoid on bundles of C*-algebras. Continuous Fell bundles on an etale groupoid correspond to coactions of the reduced groupoid algebra, and actions of a groupoid on a continuous bundle of C*-algebras correspond to coactions of the function algebra.
We prove implications among the conditions in the title for an inclusion of a C*-algebra A in a C*-algebra B, and we also relate this to several other properties in case B is a crossed product for an action of a group, inverse semigroup or an étale groupoid on A. We show that an aperiodic C*-inclusion has a unique pseudo-expectation. If, in addition, the unique pseudo-expectation is faithful, then A supports B in the sense of the Cuntz preorder. The almost extension property implies aperiodicity, and the converse holds if B is separable. A crossed product inclusion has the almost extension pro…
In this paper we consider the question of what abelian groups can arise as the $K$-theory of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras arising from minimal dynamical systems. We completely characterize the $K$-theory of the crossed product of a space $X$ with finitely generated $K$-theory by an action of the integers and show that crossed products by a minimal homeomorphisms exhaust the range of these possible $K$-theories. Moreover, we may arrange that the minimal systems involved are uniquely ergodic, so that their $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras are classified by their Elliott invariants. We also investigate the $K$…
We show that if $A$ is a simple (not necessarily unital) tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebra and $α\colon G \to \mathrm{Aut} (A)$ is an action of a finite group $G$ on $A$ with the weak tracial Rokhlin property, then the crossed product $C^*(G, A,α)$ and the fixed point algebra $A^α$ are simple and tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing, and they are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable if, in addition, $A$ is separable and nuclear. The same conclusion holds for all intermediate C*-algebras of the inclusions $A^α\subseteq A$ and $A \subseteq C^*(G, A,α)$. We prove that if $A$ is a simple tracially $\mathc…
In this paper we study the Lie groupoids which appear in foliation theory. A foliation groupoid is a Lie groupoid which integrates a foliation, or, equivalently, whose anchor map is injective. The first theorem shows that, for a Lie groupoid G, the following are equivalent: - G is a foliation groupoid, - G has discrete isotropy groups, - G is Morita equivalent to an etale groupoid. Moreover, we show that among the Lie groupoids integrating a given foliation, the holonomy and the monodromy groupoids are extreme examples. The second theorem shows that the cyclic homology of convolution algebras …
We initiate the study of compact group actions on C*-algebras from the perspective of model theory, and present several applications to C*-dynamics. Firstly, we prove that the continuous part of the central sequence algebra of a strongly self-absorbing action is indistinguishable from the continuous part of the sequence algebra, and in fact equivariantly isomorphic under the Continuum Hypothesis. As another application, we present a unified approach to several dimensional inequalities in C*-algebras, which is done through the notion of order zero dimension for an (equivariant) *-homomorphism. …
