The usual crossed product construction which associates to the homeomorphism $T$ of the locally compact space $X$ the C$^*$-algebra $C^*(X,T)$ is extended to the case of a partial local homeomorphism $T$. For example, the Cuntz-Krieger algebras are the C$^*$-algebras of the one-sided Markov shifts. The generalizations of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras (graph algebras, algebras $O_A$ where $A$ is an infinite matrix) which have been introduced recently can also be described as C$^*$-algebras of Markov chains with countably many states. This is useful to obtain such properties of these algebras as nuclearity, simplicity or pure infiniteness. One also gives examples of strong Morita equivalences arising from dynamical systems equivalences.
We give a local characterization for the Cuntz semigroup of AI-algebras building upon Shen's characterization of dimension groups. Using this result, we provide an abstract characterization for the Cuntz semigroup of AI-algebras.
The Cuntz-Toeplitz algebra $E_{n+1}$ for $n\geq1$ is the universal C*-algebra generated by $n+1$ isometries with mutually orthogonal ranges. In this paper, we investigate the automorphism groups of the Cuntz-Toeplitz algebras and determine their homotopy groups.
We provide an abstract characterization for the Cuntz semigroup of unital commutative AI-algebras, as well as a characterization for abstract Cuntz semigroups of the form $\text{Lsc} (X,\overline{\mathbb{N}})$ for some $T_1$-space $X$. In our investigations, we also uncover new properties that the Cuntz semigroup of all AI-algebras satisfies.
In this article, we present a new method to study relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras for higher-rank graphs. We only work with edges rather than paths of arbitrary degrees. We then use this method to simplify the existing results about relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We also give applications to study ideals and quotients of Toeplitz algebras.
Given two correspondences X and Y, we show that (under mild hypotheses) the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of the tensor product of X and Y embeds as a certain subalgebra of the tensor product of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of X and the Cuntz=Pimsner algebra of Y. Furthermore, this subalgebra can be described in a natural way in terms of the gauge actions on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. We explore implications for graph algebras, crossed products by the integers, and crossed products by completely positive maps. We also give a new proof of a result of Kaliszewski and Quigg related to coactions on correspo…
We give a simple and complete picture on the classification of relative Cuntz--Pimsner algebras (and so also of gauge-equivariant representations) using their intuitive parametrisation by kernel--covariance pairs.
We interpret the construction of relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of correspondences in terms of the correspondence bicategory, as a reflector into a certain sub-bicategory. This generalises a previous characterisation of absolute Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of proper correspondences as colimits in the correspondence bicategory.
This paper argues that the unitary Cuntz semigroup, introduced in [10] and termed Cu$_1$, contains crucial information regarding the classification of non-simple C$^*$-algebras. We exhibit two (non-simple) C$^*$-algebras that agree on their Cuntz semigroups, termed Cu, and their K$_1$-groups and yet disagree at level of their unitary Cuntz semigroups. In the process, we establish that the unitary Cuntz semigroup contains rigorously more information about non-simple C$^*$-algebras than Cu and K$_1$ alone.
We calculate the Cuntz semigroup of the tensor product A with A. We restrict our attention to C*-algebras A which are unital, simple, nuclear, stably finite, have stable rank one, absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially and satisfy the UCT.
Given a finitely aligned $k$-graph $Λ$, we let $Λ^i$ denote the $(k-1)$-graph formed by removing all edges of degree $e_i$ from $Λ$. We show that the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebra of $Λ$, denoted by $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ)$, may be realised as the Toeplitz algebra of a Hilbert $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ^i)$-bimodule. When $Λ$ is locally-convex, we show that the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of $Λ$, which we denote by $C^*(Λ)$, may be realised as the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a Hilbert $C^*(Λ^i)$-bimodule. Consequently, $\mathcal{T}C^*(Λ)$ and $C^*(Λ)$ may be viewed as iterated Toeplitz and iterated Cuntz-Pimsner al…
We show that the dimension of the Cuntz semigroup of a C*-algebra is determined by the dimensions of the Cuntz semigroups of its separable sub-C*-algebras. This allows us to remove separability assumptions from previous results on the dimension of Cuntz semigroups. To obtain these results, we introduce a notion of approximation for abstract Cuntz semigroups that is compatible with the approximation of a C*-algebra by sub-C*-algebras. We show that many properties for Cuntz semigroups are preserved by approximation and satisfy a Löwenheim-Skolem condition.
For a row-finite higher-rank graph Λ, we construct a higher-rank graph TΛ such that the Toeplitz algebra of Λ is isomorphic to the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of TΛ. We then prove that the higher-rank graph TΛ is always aperiodic and use this fact to give another proof of a uniqueness theorem for the Toeplitz algebras of higher-rank graphs.
We investigate subalgebras $A$ of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal O}_n$ that arise as finite direct sums of corners of the UHF-subalgebra ${\mathcal F}_n$. For such an $A$, we completely determine its normalizer group inside ${\mathcal O}_n$.
We construct a functor that maps $C^*$-correspondences to their Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. The objects in our domain category are $C^*$-correspondences, and the morphisms are the isomorphism classes of $C^*$-correspondences satisfying certain conditions. As an application, we recover a well-known result of Muhly and Solel. In fact, we show that functoriality leads us to a more generalized result: strongly Morita equivalent $C^*$-correspondences have Morita equivalent Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
Motivated by the harmonic analysis of self-affine measures, we introduce a class of representations of the Cuntz algebra associated to random walks on graphs. The representations are constructed using the dilation theory of row coisometries. We study these representations, their commutant and the intertwining operators.
In this paper, we show that for unital, separable $C^*$-algebras of stable rank one and real rank zero, the unitary Cuntz semigroup functor and the functor ${\rm K}_*$ are naturallly equivalent. Then we introduce a refinement of the unitary Cuntz semigroup, say the total Cuntz semigroup, which is a new invariant for separable $C^*$-algebras of stable rank one, is a well-defined continuous functor from the category of $C^*$-algebras of stable rank one to the category ${\rm\underline{ Cu}}$. We prove that this new functor and the functor ${\rm \underline{K}}$ are naturallly equivalent for unital…
We prove that the category of abstract Cuntz semigroups is bicomplete. As a consequence, the category admits products and ultraproducts. We further show that the scaled Cuntz semigroup of the (ultra)product of a family of C*-algebras agrees with the (ultra)product of the scaled Cuntz semigroups of the involved C*-algebras. As applications of our results, we compute the non-stable K-Theory of general (ultra)products of C*-algebras and we characterize when ultraproducts are simple. We also give criteria that determine order properties of these objects, such as almost unperforation.
For a continuous field of the Cuntz algebra over a finite CW complex, we introduce a topological invariant, which is an element in Dadarlat-Pennig's generalized cohomology group, and prove that the invariant is trivial if and only if the field comes from a vector bundle via Pimsner's construction.
We introduce a notion of covering dimension for Cuntz semigroups of C*-algebras. This dimension is always bounded by the nuclear dimension of the C*-algebra, and for subhomogeneous C*-algebras both dimensions agree. Cuntz semigroups of Z-stable C*-algebras have dimension at most one. Further, the Cuntz semigroup of a simple, Z-stable C*-algebra is zero-dimensional if and only if the C*-algebra has real rank zero or is stably projectionless.
Given two correspondences $X$ and $Y$ and a discrete group $G$ which acts on $X$ and coacts on $Y$, one can define a twisted tensor product $X\boxtimes Y$ which simultaneously generalizes ordinary tensor products and crossed products by group actions and coactions. We show that, under suitable conditions, the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of this product, $\mathcal O_{X\boxtimes Y}$, is isomorphic to a "balanced" twisted tensor product $\mathcal O_X\boxtimes_\mathbb T\mathcal O_Y$ of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of the original correspondences. We interpret this result in several contexts and connect it…
We introduce a notion of uniformly continuous orbit equivalence as a subequivalence relation of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts. It is described in terms of gauge actions on the associated Cuntz-Krieger algebras and continuous full groups of the Markov shifts.
We determine the group structure of the homotopy set whose target is the automorphism group of the Cuntz algebra $O_{n+1}$ for finite n in terms of K-theory. We show that there is an example of a space for which the homotopy set is a non-commutative group, and hence the classifying space of the automorphism group of the Cuntz algebra for finite n is not an H-space. We also make an improvement of Dadarlat's classification of continuous fields of the Cuntz algebras in terms of vector bundles.
Given a group cocycle on a finitely aligned left cancellative small category (LCSC) we investigate the associated skew product category and its Cuntz-Krieger algebra, which we describe as the crossed product of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra of the original category by an induced coaction of the group. We use our results to study Cuntz-Krieger algebras arising from free actions of groups on finitely aligned LCSC's, and to construct coactions of groups on Exel-Pardo algebras. Finally we discuss the universal group of a small category and connectedness of skew product categories.
