AMSLaTeX; 43 pages. This paper is a greatly improved version of Sections 8 through 10 of the unpublished long preprint arXiv:math.OA/0306410. In particular, the conclusion that the crossed products and fixed point algebras for the actions of Z/3Z, Z/4Z, and Z/6Z on A_θ are AH algebras has been improved to state that they are AF algebras, and the ordered K-theory has been completely determined
Let F be a finite subgroup of SL_2 (Z) (necessarily isomorphic to one of Z/2Z, Z/3Z, Z/4Z, or Z/6Z), and let F act on the irrational rotational algebra A_θ via the restriction of the canonical action of SL_2 (Z). Then the crossed product of A_θ by F, and the fixed point algebra for the action of F on A_θ, are AF algebras. The same is true for the crossed product and fixed point algebra of the flip action of Z/2Z on any simple d-dimensional noncommutative torus A_Θ. Along the way, we prove a number of general results which should have useful applications in other situations.
Let $θ, θ'$ be irrational numbers and $A, B$ be matrices in $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ of infinite order. We compute the $K$-theory of the crossed product $\mathcal{A}_θ\rtimes_A \mathbb{Z}$ and show that $\mathcal{A}_θ \rtimes_A\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{θ'} \rtimes_B \mathbb{Z}$ are $*$-isomorphic if and only if $θ= \pmθ' \pmod{\mathbb{Z}}$ and $I-A^{-1}$ is matrix equivalent to $I-B^{-1}$. Combining this result and an explicit construction of equivariant bimodules, we show that $\mathcal{A}_θ \rtimes_A\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathcal{A}_{θ'} \rtimes_B \mathbb{Z}$ are Morita equivalent if and only if $θ…
We introduce a general class of automorphisms of rotation algebras, the noncommutative Furstenberg transformations. We prove that fully irrational noncommutative Furstenberg transformations have the tracial Rokhlin property, which is a strong form of outerness. We conclude that crossed products by these automorphisms have stable rank one, real rank zero, and order on projections determined by traces (Blackadar's Second Fundamental Comparability Question). We also prove that several classes of simple quotients of the C*-algebras of discrete subgroups of five dimensional nilpotent Lie groups, co…
We study the ideal structure of reduced crossed product of topological dynamical systems of a countable discrete group. More concretely, for a compact Hausdorff space $X$ with an action of a countable discrete group $Γ$, we consider the absence of a non-zero ideals in the reduced crossed product $C(X) \rtimes_r Γ$ which has a zero intersection with $C(X)$. We characterize this condition by a property for amenable subgroups of the stabilizer subgroups of $X$ in terms of the Chabauty space of $Γ$. This generalizes Kennedy's algebraic characterization of the simplicity for a reduced group $\mathr…
We have introduced a notion of $C^*$-symbolic dynamical system in [K. Matsumoto: Actions of symbolic dynamical systems on $C^*$-algebras, to appear in J. Reine Angew. Math.], that is a finite family of endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra with some conditions. The endomorphisms are indexed by symbols and yield both a subshift and a $C^*$-algebra of a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule. The associated $C^*$-algebra with the $C^*$-symbolic dynamical system is regarded as a crossed product by the subshift. We will study a simplicity condition of the $C^*$-algebras of the $C^*$-symbolic dynamical systems. Some ex…
Let X be an infinite compact metric space with finite covering dimension and let h be a minimal homeomorphism of X. Let A be the associated crossed product C*-algebra. We show that A has tracial rank zero whenever the image of K_0 (A) in the affine functions on the tracial state space of A is dense. As a consequence, we show that these crossed product C*-algebras are in fact simple AH algebras with real rank zero. When X is connected and h is further assumed to be uniquely ergodic, then the above happens if and only if the rotation number associated to h has irrational values. By applying the …
We investigate the representation theory of the crossed-product C*-algebra associated to a compact group G acting on a locally compact space X when the stability subgroups vary discontinuously. Our main result applies when G has a principal stability subgroup or X is locally of finite G-orbit type. Then the upper multiplicity of the representation of the crossed product induced from an irreducible representation V of a stability subgroup is obtained by restricting V to a certain closed subgroup of the stability subgroup and taking the maximum of the multiplicities of the irreducible summands o…
We consider the following problem. Suppose $α$ is an action of a locally compact group $G$ on a $C^*$-algebra $A$, $H$ is a closed subgroup of $G$, and $(π,U)$ is a covariant representation of $(A,H,α)$. For which closed subgroups $K$ containing $H$ is there a covariant representation $(π,V)$ of $(A,K,α)$ such that $V|_H=U$? We answer this problem by providing a criterion involving the induced representation of $(A,G,α)$. We then consider the dual problem for coactions of locally compact groups.
We define the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite cyclic groups on stably finite simple unital C*-algebras. We prove that when the algebra is in addition simple and has tracial rank zero, then the crossed product again has tracial rank zero. Under a kind of weak approximate innerness assumption and one other technical condition, we prove that if the action has the the tracial Rokhlin property and the crossed product has tracial rank zero, then the original algebra has tracial rank zero. We give examples showing how the tracial Rokhlin property differs from the Rokhlin property of Iz…
We study the space of irreducible representations of a crossed product C*-algebra AxG, where G is a finite group. We construct a space $Γ$ which consists of pairs of irreducible representations of A and irreducible projective representations of subgroups of G. We show that there is a natural action of G on $Γ$ and that the orbit space G \ $Γ$ corresponds bijectively to the dual of AxG.
Let $M$ be a finite von Neumann algebra with the Haagerup property, and let $G$ be a compact group that acts continuously on $M$ and that preserves some finite trace $τ$. We prove that if $Γ$ is a countable subgroup of $G$ which has the Haagerup property, then the crossed product algebra $M\rtimesΓ$ has also the Haagerup property. In particular, we study some ergodic, non-weakly mixing actions of groups with the Haagerup property on finite, injective von Neumann algebras, and we prove that the associated crossed products von Neumann algebras are $\textrm{II}_1$-factors with the Haagerup proper…
We first describe a Rieffel induction system for groupoid crossed products. We then use this induction system to show that, given a regular groupoid $G$ and a dynamical system $(A,G,α)$, every irreducible representation of $A\rtimes G$ is induced from a representation of the group crossed product $A(u)\rtimes S_u$ where $u\in G\unit$, $A(u)$ is a fibre of $A$, and $S_u$ is a stabilizer subgroup of $G$.
Partial actions of discrete abelian groups can be used to construct both groupoid C*-algebras and partial crossed product algebras. In each case there is a natural notion of an analytic subalgebra. We show that for countable subgroups of the real numbers and free partial actions, these constructions yield the same C*-algebras and the same analytic subalgebras. We also show that under suitable hypotheses an analytic partial crossed product preserves all the information in the dynamical system in the sense that two analytic partial crossed products are isomorphic as Banach algebras if, and only …
If A is a C*-algebra, G a locally compact group, K{\subset}G a compact subgroup and α:G{\to}Aut(A) a continuous homomorphism, let Ax_{α}G denote the crossed product. In this paper we prove that Ax_{α}G is nuclear (respectively type I or liminal) if and only if certain hereditary C*-subalgebras, S_{π}, I_{π}{\subset}Ax_{α}G π{\in}K, are nuclear (respectively type I or liminal). These algebras are the analogs of the algebras of spherical functions considered by R. Godement for groups with large compact subgroups. If K=G is a compact group or a compact quantum group, the algebras S_{π} are stably…
For any maximal coaction (A, G, delta) and any closed normal subgroup N of G, there exists an imprimitivity bimodule Y between the full crossed product A x G x N and A x G/N, together with a compatible coaction delta_Y of G. The assignment (A, delta) -> (Y, delta_Y) implements a natural equivalence between the crossed-product functors "x G x N" and "x G/N", in the category whose objects are maximal coactions of G and whose morphisms are isomorphism classes of right-Hilbert bimodule coactions of G.
Green's theorem gives a Morita equivalence $C_0(G/H,A)\rtimes G\sim A\rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H$ of a locally compact group $G$ acting on a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We prove an analogue of Green's theorem in the case $G=\mathbb{Z}$, where the automorphism generating the action is replaced by a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule.
For certain generating sets of the subfactor pair $M\subset M\rtimes G$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group we prove an approximate inequality between their non-microstates free entropy dimension, resembling the Shreier formula for ranks of finite index subgroups of free groups. As an application, we give bounds on free entropy dimension of generating sets of crossed products of the form $M\rtimes(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{\oplus\infty}$ for a large class of algebras $M$.
We prove that given a regular groupoid $G$ whose isotropy subgroupoid $S$ has a Haar system, along with a dynamical system $(A,G,α)$, there is an action of $G$ on the spectrum of $A\rtimes S$ such that the spectrum of $A\rtimes G$ is homeomorphic to the orbit space of this action via induction. In addition, we give a strengthening of these results in the case where the crossed product is a groupoid algebra.
We consider the tracial crossed product algebra $M=A\rtimesΛ$ arising from a trace preserving action $σ:Λ\curvearrowright A$ of a discrete group $Λ$ on a tracial von Neumann algebra $A$. For a unitary subgroup $\mathcal{G}\subset \mathcal{U}(M)$, we study when this $\mathcal{G}$ can be conjugated into $\mathcal{U}(A)\cdotΛ$ in $M$. We provide a general sufficient condition for this to happen. Our result generalizes a result of Ioana, Popa and Vaes, which treats the case when $M$ is the group von Neumann algebra $L(Λ)$.
We discuss the cyclic homology of crossed product algebras from the Cuntz-Quillen point of view. The periodic cyclic homology of a crossed product algebra $A\rtimes G$ is described in terms of the $G$-action on periodic cyclic bicomplexes of crossed products of $A$ by the cyclic subgroups of $G$ .
Using the strong relation between coactions of a discrete group G on C*-algebras and Fell bundles over G, we prove a new version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem for coactions of discrete groups. Our imprimitivity theorem works for the universally defined full crossed products and arbitrary subgroups of G, as opposed to the usual theory which uses the spatially defined reduced crossed products and normal subgroups of G. Moreover, our theorem factors through the usual one by passing to appropriate quotients. As applications we show that a Fell bundle over a discrete group is amenable in the…
Let $δ$ be a nondegenerate coaction of G on a C*-algebra B, and let H be a closed subgroup of G. The dual action of H on $B\times_δG$ is proper and saturated in the sense of Rieffel, and the generalised fixed-point algebra is the crossed product of B by the homogeneous space G/H. The resulting Morita equivalence is a version of Mansfield's imprimitivity theorem which requires neither amenability nor normality of H.
Let B be a C*-algebra with a maximal coaction of a locally compact group G, and let N and H be closed normal subgroups of G with N contained in H. We show that the process Ind_(G/H)^G which uses Mansfield's bimodule to induce representations of the crossed product of B by G from those of the restricted crossed product of B by (G/H) is equivalent to the two-stage induction process: Ind_(G/N)^G composed with Ind_(G/H)^(G/N). The proof involves a calculus of symmetric imprimitivity bimodules which relates the bimodule tensor product to the fibred product of the underlying spaces.
Let a discrete group $G$ act on a unital simple C$^*$-algebra $A$ by outer automorphisms. We establish a Galois correspondence $H\mapsto A\rtimes_{α,r}H$ between subgroups of $G$ and C$^*$-algebras $B$ satisfying $A\subseteq B \subseteq A\rtimes_{α,r}G$, where $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ denotes the reduced crossed product. For a twisted dynamical system $(A,G,α,σ)$, we also prove the corresponding result for the reduced twisted crossed product $A\rtimes^σ_{α,r}G$.
Dynamical conditions that guarantee stability for discrete transformation group $C^*$-algebras are determined. The results are applied to the case of some discrete subgroups of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ acting on the plane with the origin removed by means of matrix multiplication of vectors. In the case of cocompact subgroups, further properties of such crossed products are deduced from properties of the $C^*$-algebra associated to the horocycle flow on the corresponding compact homogeneous space of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$.
We embed the quantum Heisenberg manifold in a crossed product algebra. This enables us to show that, in the irrational case, all tracial states on $\dc$ induce the same homomorphism on the K_0-group. We conclude that two irrational quantum Heisenberg manifolds $\dc$ and $D^c_{μ' ν'}$ are isomorphic if and only if the parameters $(μ,ν)$ and $(μ',ν')$ belong to the same orbit under the usual action of $GL_2(\ZZ)$ on the torus.
For a matched pair of locally compact quantum groups, we construct the double crossed product as a locally compact quantum group. This construction generalizes Drinfeld's quantum double construction. We study C*-algebraic properties of these double crossed products and several links between double crossed products and bicrossed products. In an appendix, we study the Radon-Nikodym derivative of a weight under a quantum group action, following Yamanouchi and obtain, as a corollary, a new characterization of closed quantum subgroups.
We consider a fixed free and proper action of a locally compact group $G$ on a space $T$, and actions $α:G\to \Aut A$ on $C^*$-algebras for which there is an equivariant embedding of $(C_0(T),\rt)$ in $(M(A),α)$. A recent theorem of Rieffel implies that $α$ is proper and saturated with respect to the subalgebra $C_0(T)AC_0(T)$ of $A$, so that his general theory of proper actions gives a Morita equivalence between $A\rtimes_{α,r}G$ and a generalised fixed-point algebra $A^α$. Here we investigate the functor $(A,α)\mapsto A^α$ and the naturality of Rieffel's Morita equivalence, focusing in parti…
We consider group-subgroup pairs in which the group is a semidirect product and the subgroup is contained in the normal part. We give conditions for the pair to be a Hecke pair and we show that the enveloping Hecke algebra and Hecke C*-algebra are canonically isomorphic to semigroup crossed products, generalizing earlier results of Arledge, Laca and Raeburn and of Brenken.
We prove a generalized version of Powers' averaging property that characterizes simplicity of reduced crossed products $C(X) \rtimes_λG$, where $G$ is a countable discrete group, and $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space which $G$ acts on minimally by homeomorphisms. As a consequence, we generalize results of Hartman and Kalantar on unique stationarity to the state space of $C(X) \rtimes_λG$ and to Kawabe's generalized space of amenable subgroups $\operatorname{Sub}_a(X,G)$. This further lets us generalize a result of the first named author and Kalantar on simplicity of intermediate C*-algebras. We…
We describe (infinite-dimensional) irreducible representations of the crossed product C$^*$-algebra associated with a topological dynamical system (based on $Z$) and we show that their restrictions to the underling $\ell^1$-Banach $*$-algebra are not algebraically irreducible under mild conditions on the dynamical system. The above description of irreducible representations has two ingredients, ergodic measures on the space and ergodic extensions for the tensor product with type I factors; the latter which may not have been explicitly taken up before will be explored by examples. A new class o…
We study actions of locally compact groups on von Neumann factors and the associated crossed-product von Neumann algebras. In the setting of totally disconnected groups we provide sufficient conditions on an action $G\curvearrowright Q$ ensuring that the inclusion $Q \subset Q \rtimes G$ is irreducible and that every intermediate subfactor is of the form $Q \rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H<G$. This partially generalizes a result of Izumi-Longo-Popa [ILP98] and Choda [Ch78]. We moreover show that one can not hope to use their strategy for non-discrete groups.
The equivariant version of semiprojectivity was recently introduced by the first author. We study properties of this notion, in particular its relation to ordinary semiprojectivity of the crossed product and of the algebra itself. We show that equivariant semiprojectivity is preserved when the action is restricted to a cocompact subgroup. Thus, if a second countable compact group acts semiprojectively on a C*-algebra $A$, then $A$ must be semiprojective. This fails for noncompact groups: we construct a semiprojective action of the integers on a nonsemiprojective C*-algebra. We also study equiv…
We study the K-homology of the rotation algebras $A_θ$ using the six term cyclic sequence for the K-homology of a crossed product by ${\bf Z}$. In the case where $θ$ is irrational we use Pimsner and Voiculescu's work on AF-embeddings of the $A_θ$ to search for the missing generator of the even K-homology.
For $\MvN$ a separable, purely infinite von Neumann algebra with almost periodic weight $ϕ$, a decomposition of $\MvN$ as a crossed product of a semifinite von Neumann algebra by a trace--scaling action of a countable abelian group is given. Then Takasaki's continuous decomposition of the same algebra is related to the above discrete decomposition via Takesaki's notion of induced action, but here one induces up from a dense subgroup. The above results are used to give a model for the one--parameter trace--scaling action of $\Real_+$ on the injective II$_\infty$ factor. Finally, another model o…
Let BS(n_1,m_1) $\curvearrowright$ X_1 and BS(n_2,m_2) $\curvearrowright$ X_2 be two ergodic essentially free probability measure preserving actions of nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups whose canonical almost normal abelian subgroups act aperiodically. We prove that an isomorphism between the corresponding crossed product II_1 factors forces BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,m_2) when |n_1| $\neq$ |m_1| and BS(n_1,m_1) $\cong$ BS(n_2,$\pm$m_2) when |n_1| = |m_1|. This improves an orbit equivalence rigidity result obtained by Houdayer and Raum.
The a-adic numbers are those groups that arise as Hausdorff completions of noncyclic subgroups of the rational numbers. We give a crossed product construction of (stabilized) Cuntz-Li algebras coming from the a-adic numbers and investigate the structure of the associated algebras. In particular, these algebras are in many cases Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class. Moreover, we prove an a-adic duality theorem, which links a Cuntz-Li algebra with a corresponding dynamical system on the real numbers. The paper also contains an appendix where a nonabelian version of the "subgroup of dual group the…
For any irrational theta and rational number p/q such that q|qtheta-p|<1, a projection e of trace q|qtheta-p| is constructed in the the irrational rotation algebra A_theta that is invariant under the Fourier transform. (The latter is the order four automorphism U mapped to V, V mapped to U^{-1}, where U, V are the canonical unitaries generating A_theta.) Further, the projection e is approximately central, the cut down algebra eA_theta e contains a Fourier invariant q x q matrix algebra whose unit is e, and the cut downs eUe, eVe are approximately inside the matrix algebra. (In particular, ther…
A pre-subgroup of a multiplicative unitary $V$ on a finite dimensionnal Hilbert space $H$ is a vector line $L$ in $H$ such that $V(L\otimes L)=L\otimes L$. We show that there are finitely many pre-subgroups, give a Lagrange theorem and generalize the construction of a `bi-crossed product'. Moreover, we establish bijections between pre-subgroups and coideal subalgebras of the Hopf algebra associated with $V$, and therefore with the intermediate subfactors of the associated (depth two) inclusions. Finally, we show that the pre-subgroups classify the subobjects of $(H,V)$.
We characterize when the primitive ideal space of a crossed product $\acg$ of a \cs-algebra $A$ by a locally compact abelian group $G$ is a $σ$-trivial $\ghat G$-space for the dual $\ghat G$-action. Specifically, we show that $\Prim(\acg)$ is $σ$-trivial if and only if the quasi-orbit space is Hausdorff, the map which assigns to each quasi-orbit $\w$ a certain subgroup $\ttg(α^\w)$ of the Connes spectrum of the system $(A_\w,G,α^\w)$ is continuous, and there is a generalized Green twisting map for $(A,G,α)$. Our proof requires a substantial generalization of a theorem of Olesen and Pedersen in…
An exotic crossed product is a way of associating a C*-algebra to each C*-dynamical system that generalizes the well-known universal and reduced crossed products. Exotic crossed products provide natural generalizations of, and tools to study, exotic group C*-algebras as recently considered by Brown-Guentner and others. They also form an essential part of a recent program to reformulate the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients so as to mollify the counterexamples caused by failures of exactness. In this paper, we survey some constructions of exotic group algebras and exotic crossed products…
A C*-dynamical system is said to have the ideal separation property if every ideal in the corresponding crossed product arises from an invariant ideal in the C*-algebra. In this paper we characterize this property for unital C*-dynamical systems over discrete groups. To every C*-dynamical system we associate a "twisted" partial C*-dynamical system that encodes much of the structure of the action. This system can often be "untwisted," for example when the algebra is commutative, or when the algebra is prime and a certain specific subgroup has vanishing Mackey obstruction. In this case, we obtai…
For any countable discrete group $G$ with a reduced abelian subgroup of finite index, we construct an action $α$ of $G$ on the universal UHF algebra $\Qq$ using an infinite tensor product of permutation representations of $G$ and show that these actions possess some sort of Rokhlin property. The crossed product $\qag$ is then deduced to be tracially AF with a unique tracial state. We also compute the Elliott invariants in the case that $G$ is abelian.
This paper considers generators of Heisenberg modules in the case of twisted group $C^*$-algebras of closed subgroups of locally compact abelian groups and how the restrction and/or periodization of these generators yield generators for other Heisenberg modules. Since generators of Heisenberg modules are exactly the generators of (multi-window) Gabor frames, our methods are going to be from Gabor analy\-sis. In the latter setting the procedure of restriction and periodization of generators is well known. Our results extend this established part of Gabor analy\-sis to the general setting of loc…
Suppose that $H$ is a closed subgroup of a locally compact group $G$. We show that a unitary representation $U$ of $H$ is the restriction of a unitary representation of $G$ if and only if a dual representation $\hat U$ of a crossed product $C^*(G)\rtimes (G/H)$ is regular in an appropriate sense. We then discuss the problem of deciding whether a given representation is regular; we believe that this problem will prove to be an interesting test question in non-abelian duality for crossed products of $C^*$-algebras.
The paper studies the $K$-theoretic invariants of the crossed product $C^{*}$-algebras associated with an important family of homeomorphisms of the tori $\Bbb{T}^{n}$ called {\em Furstenberg transformations}. Using the Pimsner-Voiculescu theorem, we prove that given $n$, the $K$-groups of those crossed products, whose corresponding $n\times n$ integer matrices are unipotent of maximal degree, always have the same rank $a_{n}$. We show using the theory developed here, together with two computing programs - included in an appendix - that a claim made in the literature about the torsion subgroups…
A subgroup of an amenable group is amenable. The $C^*$-algebra version of this fact is false. This was first proved by M.-D. Choi who proved that the non-nuclear $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\ZZ_2*\ZZ_3)$ is a subalgebra of the nuclear Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_2$. A. Connes provided another example, based on a crossed product construction. More recently J. Spielberg [23] showed that these examples were essentially the same. In fact he proved that certain of the $C^*$-algebras studied by J. Cuntz and W. Krieger [10] can be constructed naturally as crossed product algebras. For example if the group $Γ$ a…
The first imprimitivity theorems identified the representations of groups or dynamical systems which are induced from representations of a subgroup. Symmetric imprimitivity theorems identify pairs of crossed products by different groups which are Morita equivalent, and hence have the same representation theory. Here we consider commuting actions of groups $H$ and $K$ on a $C^*$-algebra which are saturated and proper as defined by Rieffel in 1990. Our main result says that the resulting Morita equivalence of crossed products is natural in the sense that it is compatible with homomorphisms and i…
