In this paper we investigate the interrelation between the topological freedom of partial actions of discrete groups and faithful representations of partial crossed products.
We introduce the concept of crossed product of a product system by a locally compact group. We prove that the crossed product of a row-finite and faithful product system by an amenable group is also a row-finite and faithful product system. We illustrate with examples related to group actions on $k$-graphs and to higher rank Doplicher-Roberts algebras.
For $\MvN$ a separable, purely infinite von Neumann algebra with almost periodic weight $ϕ$, a decomposition of $\MvN$ as a crossed product of a semifinite von Neumann algebra by a trace--scaling action of a countable abelian group is given. Then Takasaki's continuous decomposition of the same algebra is related to the above discrete decomposition via Takesaki's notion of induced action, but here one induces up from a dense subgroup. The above results are used to give a model for the one--parameter trace--scaling action of $\Real_+$ on the injective II$_\infty$ factor. Finally, another model o…
We study the crossed product $C^*$-algebra associated to injective endomorphisms, which turns out to be equivalent to study the crossed product by the dilated autormorphism. We prove that the dilation of the Bernoulli $p$-shift endomorphism is topologically free. As a consequence, we have a way to twist any endomorphism of a $\D$-absorbing $C^*$-algebra into one whose dilated automorphism is essentially free and have the same $K$-theory map than the original one. This allows us to construct purely infinite crossed products $C^*$-algebras with diverse ideal structures.
Let (A,G,α) be a partial dynamical system. We show that there is a bijective correspondence between G-invariant ideals of A and ideals in the partial crossed product A xr G provided the action is exact and residually topologically free. Assuming, in addition, a technical condition---automatic when A is abelian---we show that A xr G is purely infinite if and only if the positive nonzero elements in A are properly infinite in A xr G. As an application we verify pure infiniteness of various partial crossed products, including realisations of the Cuntz algebras O_n, O_A, O_N, and O_Z as partial cr…
Let $Γ^+$ be the positive cone in a totally ordered abelian group $Γ$, and let $α$ be an action of $Γ^+$ by endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We consider a new kind of crossed-product $C^*$-algebra $A\times_αΓ^+$, which is generated by a faithful copy of $A$ and a representation of $Γ^+$ as partial isometries. We claim that these crossed products provide a rich and tractable family of Toeplitz algebras for product systems of Hilbert bimodules, as recently studied by Fowler, and we illustrate this by proving detailed structure theorems for actions by forward and backward shifts.
Let $Γ^{+}$ be the positive cone of a totally ordered abelian discrete group $Γ$, and $α$ an action of $Γ^{+}$ by extendible endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We prove that the partial-isometric crossed product $A\times_α^{\textrm{piso}}Γ^{+}$ is a full corner of a group crossed product $\mathcal{B}\times_βΓ$, where $\mathcal{B}$ is a subalgebra of $\ell^{\infty}(Γ,A)$ generated by a collection of faithful copies of $A$, and the action $β$ on $\mathcal{B}$ is induced by shift on $\ell^{\infty}(Γ,A)$. We then use this realization to show that $A\times_α^{\textrm{piso}}Γ^{+}$ has an essentia…
Recently, Cuntz and Li introduced the C^*-algebra A[R] associated to an integral domain R with finite quotients. In this paper, we show that A[R] is a partial group algebra of the group $K \rtimes K^x$ with suitable relations, where K is the field of fractions of R. We identify the spectrum of this relations and we show that it is homeomorphic to the profinite completion of R. By using partial crossed product theory, we reconstruct some results proved by Cuntz and Li. Among them, we prove that $\ar$ is simple by showing that the action is topologically free and minimal.
We describe (infinite-dimensional) irreducible representations of the crossed product C$^*$-algebra associated with a topological dynamical system (based on $Z$) and we show that their restrictions to the underling $\ell^1$-Banach $*$-algebra are not algebraically irreducible under mild conditions on the dynamical system. The above description of irreducible representations has two ingredients, ergodic measures on the space and ergodic extensions for the tensor product with type I factors; the latter which may not have been explicitly taken up before will be explored by examples. A new class o…
Suppose $A$ is a $C^*$-algebra and $H$ is a $C^*$-correspondence over $A$. If $H$ is regular in the sense that the left action of $A$ is faithful and is given by compact operators, then we compute the $K$-theory of $\mathcal{O}_A(H) \rtimes \mathbb{T}$ where the action is the usual gauge action. The case where $A$ is an AF-algebra is carefully analyzed. In particular, if $A$ is AF, we show $\mathcal{O}_A(H) \rtimes \mathbb{T}$ is AF. Combining this with Takai duality and an AF-embedding theorem of N. Brown, we show the conditions AF-embeddability, quasidiagonality, and stable finiteness are eq…
Let $A$ be a unital AH-algebra and let $α\in Aut(A)$ be an automorphism. A necessary condition for $A\rtimes_α\Z$ being embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra is the existence of a faithful tracial state. If in addition, there is an automorphism $κ$ with $κ_{*1}=-{\rm id}_{K_1(A)}$ such that $α\circ κ$ and $κ\circ \af$ are asymptotically unitarily equivalent, then $A\rtimes_{\af}\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra. Consequently, in the case that $A$ is a unital AH-algebra (not necessarily simple) with torsion $K_1(A),$ $A\rtimes_α\Z$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-al…
We show that all amenable, minimal actions of a large class of nonamenable countable groups on compact metric spaces have dynamical comparison. This class includes all nonamenable hyperbolic groups, many HNN-extensions, nonamenable Baumslag-Solitar groups, a large class of amalgamated free products, lattices in many Lie groups, $\widetilde{A}_2$-groups, as well as direct products of the above with arbitrary countable groups. As a consequence, crossed products by amenable, minimal and topologically free actions of such groups on compact metric spaces are Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class, and…
In this article, we use Exel's construction to associate a C*-algebra to every shift space. We show that it has the C*-algebra defined in [Carlsen and Matsumoto: Some remarks on the C*-algebras associated with subshifts] as a quotient, and possesses properties indicating that it can be thought of as the universal C*-algebra associated to a shift space. We also consider its representations, relationship to other C*-algebras associated to shift spaces, show that it can be viewed as a generalization of the universal Cuntz-Krieger algebra, discuss uniqueness and a faithful representation, provide …
We generalize a theorem of Chifan and Ioana by proving that for any, possibly type III, amenable von Neumann algebra $A_0$, any faithful normal state $φ_0$ and any discrete group $Γ$, the associated Bernoulli crossed product von Neumann algebra $M=(A_0,φ_0)^{\mathbin{\bar{\otimes}}Γ}\rtimes Γ$ is solid relatively to $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$. In particular, if $\mathcal{L}(Γ)$ is solid then $M$ is solid and if $Γ$ is non-amenable and $A_0 \neq \mathbb{C}$ then $M$ is a full prime factor. This gives many new examples of solid or prime type $\mathrm{III}$ factors. Following Chifan and Ioana, we also obta…
Let $X$ be a compact metric space and let $Λ$ be a $\Z^k$ ($k\ge 1$) action on $X.$ We give a solution to a version of Voiculescu's problem of AF-embedding: The crossed product $C(X)\rtimes_Λ\Z^k$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra if and only if $X$ admits a strictly positive $Λ$-invariant Borel probability measure. Let $C$ be a unital AH-algebra, let $G$ be a finitely generated abelian group and let $Λ: G\to Aut(C)$ be a monomorphism. We show that $C\rtimes_Λ G$ can be embedded into a unital simple AF-algebra if and only if $C$ admits a faithful $Λ$-invariant tracial state.
A discrete group $\G$ is called rigidly symmetric if the projective tensor product between the convolution algebra $\ell^1(\G)$ and any $C^*$-algebra $\A$ is symmetric. We show that in each topologically graded $C^*$-algebra over a rigidly symmetric group there is a $\ell^1$-type symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra, which is inverse closed in the $C^*$-algebra. This includes new general classes, as algebras admitting dual actions and partial crossed products. Results including convolution dominated kernels, inverse closedness with respect with ideals or weighted versions of the $\ell^1$-decay are in…
For dynamical systems defined by a covering map of a compact Hausdorff space and the corresponding transfer operator, the associated crossed product $C^*$-algebras $\cros$ introduced by Exel and Vershik are considered. An important property for homeomorphism dynamical systems is topological freeness. It can be extended in a natural way to in general non-invertible dynamical systems generated by covering maps. In this article, it is shown that the following four properties are equivalent: the dynamical system generated by a covering map is topologically free; the canonical imbedding of $C(X)$ i…
A product system E over a semigroup P is a family of Hilbert spaces {E_s:s\in P} together with multiplications E_s \times E_t\to E_{st}. We view E as a unitary- valued cocycle on P, and consider twisted crossed products A \times_{β,E} P involving E and an action βof P by endomorphisms of a C*-algebra A. When P is quasi-lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, we isolate a class of covariant representations of E, and consider a twisted crossed product B_P \times_{τ,E} P which is universal for covariant representations of E when E has finite-dimensional fibres, and in general is slightly larger. In…
Let $α: G\curvearrowright X$ be a continuous action of an infinite countable group on a compact Hausdorff space. We show that, under the hypothesis that the action $α$ is topologically free and has no $G$-invariant regular Borel probability measure on $X$, dynamical comparison implies that the reduced crossed product of $α$ is purely infinite and simple. This result, as an application, shows a dichotomy between stable finiteness and pure infiniteness for reduced crossed products arising from actions satisfying dynamical comparison. We also introduce the concepts of paradoxical comparison and t…
For $p \in [1, \infty),$ we define and study full and reduced crossed products of algebras of operators on $σ$-finite $L^p$ spaces by isometric actions of second countable locally compact groups. We give universal properties for both crossed products. When the group is abelian, we prove the existence of a dual action on the full and reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products. When the group is discrete, we construct a conditional expectation to the original algebra which is faithful in a suitable sense. For a free action of a discrete group on a compact metric space $X,$ we identify all traces on…
It is shown that a C*-algebra generated by any faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule X is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product associated to X provided that Rieffel's induced representation functor X-ind is topologically free. It is discussed how this result could be applied to universal C*-algebras generated by relations with a circle gauge action. In particular, it leads to generalizations of isomorphism theorems for various crossed products, and is shown to be equivalent to Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for finite graph C*-algebras (on that occasion an intrigui…
A collection of partial isometries whose range and initial projections satisfy a specified set of conditions often gives rise to a partial representation of a group. The C*-algebra generated by the partial isometries is thus a quotient of the universal C*-algebra for partial representations of the group, from which it inherits a crossed product structure, of an abelian C*-algebra by a partial action of the group. Questions of faithfulness of representations, simplicity, and ideal structure of these C*-algebras can then be addressed in a unified manner from within the theory of partial actions.…
Given a closed ideal I in a C*-algebra A, an ideal J (not necessarily closed) in I, a *-homomorphism \al:A --> M(I) and a map L:J --> A with some properties, based on [3] and [9] we define a C*-algebra O(A,\al,L) which we call the "Crossed Product by a Partial Endomorphism." In the second section we introduce the Crossed Product by a Partial Endomorphism O(X,\al,L) induced by a local homeomorphism σ:U --> X where X is a compact Hausdorff space and U is an open subset of X.The main result of this section is that every nonzero gauge invariant ideal of O(X,\al,L) has nonzero intersection with C(X…
It is shown that topological freeness of Rieffel's induced representation functor implies that any $C^*$-algebra generated by a faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule $X$ over a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$. An ideal lattice description and a simplicity criterion for $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$ are established.
Let $P$ be a unital subsemigroup of a group $G$. We propose an approach to $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras associated to product systems over $P$. We call the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra of a given product system $\mathcal{E}$ its covariance algebra and denote it by $A\times_{\mathcal{E}}P$, where $A$ is the coefficient $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra. We prove that our construction does not depend on the embedding $P\hookrightarrow G$ and that a representation of $A\times_{\mathcal{E}}P$ is faithful on the fixed-point algebra for the canonical coaction of $G$ if and only if it is faithful on $A$. We compare this w…
A Hilbert bimodule is a right Hilbert module X over a C*-algebra A together with a left action of A as adjointable operators on X. We consider families X = {X_s :s\in P} of Hilbert bimodules, indexed by a semigroup P, which are endowed with a multiplication which implements isomorphisms X_s\otimes_A X_t \to X_{st}; such a family is a called a product system. We define a generalized Cuntz- Pimsner algebra O_X, and we show that every twisted crossed product of A by P can be realized as O_X for a suitable product system X. Assuming P is quasi- lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, we analyze a ce…
Given an inverse semigroup $S$ endowed with a partial action on a topological space $X$, we construct a groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ in a manner similar to Exel's groupoid of germs, and similarly a partial action of $S$ on an algebra $A$ induces a crossed product $A\rtimes S$. We then prove, in the setting of partial actions, that if $X$ is locally compact Hausdorff and zero-dimensional, then the Steinberg algebra of the groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ is isomorphic to the crossed product $A_R(X)\rtimes S$, where $A_R(X)$ is the Steinberg algebra of $X$. We also prove that the converse holds,…
We associate a boundary $\mathcal B_{π,u}$ to each covariant representation $(π,u,H)$ of $C^*$-dynamical system $(G,A,α)$ and study the action of $G$ on $\mathcal B_{π,u}$ and its amenability properties. We relate rigidity properties of traces on the associated crossed product C*-algebra to faithfulness of action of the group on this boundary.
We introduce and study the notions of boundary actions and of the Furstenberg boundary of a discrete quantum group. As for classical groups, properties of boundary actions turn out to encode significant properties of the operator algebras associated with the discrete quantum group in question; for example we prove that if the action on the Furstenberg boundary is faithful, the quantum group C*-algebra admits at most one KMS-state for the scaling automorphism group. To obtain these results we develop a version of Hamana's theory of injective envelopes for quantum group actions, and establish se…
We define the decomposition property for partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras. Decomposable partial systems appear naturally in practice, and many commonly occurring partial actions can be decomposed into partial actions with the decomposition property. For instance, any partial action of a finite group is an iterated extension of decomposable systems. Partial actions with the decomposition property are always globalizable and amenable, regardless of the acting group, and their globalization can be explicitly described in terms of certain global sub-systems. A direct computatio…
We attach to each finite bipartite separated graph (E,C) a partial dynamical system (Ω(E,C), F, θ), where Ω(E,C) is a zero-dimensional metrizable compact space, F is a finitely generated free group, and θ is a continuous partial action of F on Ω(E,C). The full crossed product C*-algebra O(E,C) = C(Ω(E,C)) \rtimes_θ F is shown to be a canonical quotient of the graph C*-algebra C^*(E,C) of the separated graph (E,C). Similarly, we prove that, for any *-field K, the algebraic crossed product L^{ab}_K(E,C) = C_K(Ω(E,C)) \rtimes_θ^{alg} F is a canonical quotient of the Leavitt path algebra L_K(E,C) …
For an amenable minimal topologically free dynamical system $α$ of a group on a compact metrizable space $Z$ and for a compact metrizable space $Y$ satisfying a mild condition, we construct a minimal skew product extension of $α$ on $Z\times Y$. This generalizes a result of Glasner and Weiss. We also study the pure infiniteness of the crossed products of minimal dynamical systems arising from this result. In particular, we give a generalization of a result of Rørdam and Sierakowski.

We first give an overview of the basic theory for discrete unital twisted C*-dynamical systems and their covariant representations on Hilbert C*-modules. After introducing the notion of equivariant representations of such systems and their product with covariant representations, we prove a kind of Fell absorption principle saying that the product of an induced regular equivariant representation with a covariant faithful representation is weakly equivalent to an induced regular covariant representation. This principle is the key to our main result, namely that a certain property, formally weake…
A countable family of $*$-commuting surjective, non-injective local homeomorphisms of a compact Hausdorff space $X$ gives rise to an action $θ$ of a countably generated, free abelian monoid $P$. For such a triple $(X,P,θ)$, which we call an irreversible $*$-commutative dynamical system, we construct a universal $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{O}[X,P,θ]$. Within this setting we show that the following four conditions are equivalent: $(X,P,θ)$ is topologically free, $C(X) \subset \mathcal{O}[X,P,θ]$ has the ideal intersection property, the natural representation of $\mathcal{O}[X,P,θ]$ on $\ell^2(X)$ is…
