A Hilbert bimodule is a right Hilbert module X over a C*-algebra A together with a left action of A as adjointable operators on X. We consider families X = {X_s :s\in P} of Hilbert bimodules, indexed by a semigroup P, which are endowed with a multiplication which implements isomorphisms X_s\otimes_A X_t \to X_{st}; such a family is a called a product system. We define a generalized Cuntz- Pimsner algebra O_X, and we show that every twisted crossed product of A by P can be realized as O_X for a suitable product system X. Assuming P is quasi- lattice ordered in the sense of Nica, we analyze a certain Toeplitz extension T_{cov}(X) of O_X by embedding it in a crossed product B_P \times_{τ,X} P which has been ``twisted'' by X; our main Theorem is a characterization of the faithful representations of B_P \times_{τ,X} P.
We extend the definition of an extension of a right Hilbert module to the setting of Hilbert bimodules and show that an extension of Hilbert bimodules induces an extension of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. We also study the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to the multiplier bimodule and show that an extension can be realised as a restricted direct-sum bimodule.
We examine Hilbert bimodules which possess a (generally unbounded) involution. Topics considered include a linking algebra representation, duality, locality, and the role of these bimodules in noncommutative differential geometry.
We discuss the crossed product by the dual action of the circle on the crossed product of a C*-algebra A by a Hilbert C*-bimodule X. When X is an A-A Morita equivalence bimodule, the double crossed product is shown to be Morita equivalent to the C*-algebra A.
Given a correspondence X over a C*-algebra A, we construct a C*-algebra and a Hilbert C*-bimodule over it whose crossed product is isomorphic to the augmented Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra of X. This construction enables us to establish a condition for two augmented Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebras to be Morita equivalent.
It is shown that topological freeness of Rieffel's induced representation functor implies that any $C^*$-algebra generated by a faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule $X$ over a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$. An ideal lattice description and a simplicity criterion for $A\rtimes_X \mathbb{Z}$ are established.
Green's theorem gives a Morita equivalence $C_0(G/H,A)\rtimes G\sim A\rtimes H$ for a closed subgroup $H$ of a locally compact group $G$ acting on a $C^*$-algebra $A$. We prove an analogue of Green's theorem in the case $G=\mathbb{Z}$, where the automorphism generating the action is replaced by a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule.
We show that if $(X.A)$ and $(Y,B)$ are two isomorphic Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast} $-bimodules, then the crossed product $A\times_{X}\mathbb{Z}$ of $A$ by $X$ and the crossed product $B\times_{Y}\mathbb{Z}$ of $B$ by $Y$ are isomorphic as pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebras. We also prove a property of "associativity" between " $\otimes_{\min}$" and "$\times_{X}$" $\ $as well as " $\otimes_{\max}$" and "$\times_{X}$". As an application of these results we show that the crossed product of a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$ -algebra $A$ by a full Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast}$-bimodule $X$ is a nuclear pro-$C^{\ast}$-algebra.
Suppose $A$ is a pro-C*-algebra. Let $L_{A}(E)$ be the pro-C*-algebra of adjointable operators on a Hilbert $A$-module $E$ and let $K_{A}(E)$ be the closed two sided $*$-ideal of all compact operators on $E$. We prove that if $E$ be a full Hilbert $A$-module, the innerness of derivations on $K_{A}(E)$ implies the innerness of derivations on $L_{A}(E)$. We show that if $A$ is a commutative pro-C*-algebra and $E$ is a Hilbert $A$-bimodule then every derivation on $K_{A}(E)$ is zero. Moreover, if $A$ is a commutative $σ$-C*-algebra and $E$ is a Hilbert $A$-bimodule then every derivation on $L_{A}…
Let $A$ and $B$ be arbitrary $C^*$-algebras, we prove that the existence of a Hilbert $A$-$B$-bimodule of finite index ensures that the WEP, QWEP, and LLP along with other finite-dimensional approximation properties such as CBAP and (S)OAP are shared by $A$ and $B$. For this, we first study the stability of the WEP, QWEP and LLP under Morita equivalence of $C^*$-algebras. We present examples of Hilbert $A$-$B$-bimodules which are not of finite index, while such properties are shared between $A$ and $B$. To this end, we study twisted crossed products by amenable discrete groups.
Let (G,P) be a quasi-lattice ordered group and let X be a compactly aligned product system over P of Hilbert bimodules. Under mild hypotheses we associate to X a C*-algebra which we call the Cuntz-Nica-Pimsner algebra of X. Our construction generalises a number of others: a sub-class of Fowler's Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for product systems of Hilbert bimodules; Katsura's formulation of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of Hilbert bimodules; the C*-algebras of finitely aligned higher-rank graphs; and Crisp and Laca's boundary quotients of Toeplitz algebras. We show that for a large class of product systems …
In this paper we introduce the notion of multiplier of a Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast }$-bimodule and we investigate the structure of the multiplier bimodule of a Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast}$-bimodule. We also investigate the relationship between the crossed product $A\times _{X}\mathbb{Z}$ of a pro-$% C^{\ast }$-algebra $A$ by a Hilbert pro-$C^{\ast }$-bimodule $X$ over $A$, the crossed product $M(A)\times _{M(X)}\mathbb{Z}$ of the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ of $A$ by the multiplier bimodule $M(X)$ of $X$ and the multiplier algebra $M(A\times _{X}\mathbb{Z})$ of $A\times _{X}\mathbb{Z}$.
We introduce the notion of finite right (respectively left) numerical index on a bimodule $X$ over C*-algebras A and B with a bi-Hilbertian structure. This notion is based on a Pimsner-Popa type inequality. The right (respectively left) index element of X can be constructed in the centre of the enveloping von Neumann algebra of A (respectively B). X is called of finite right index if the right index element lies in the multiplier algebra of A. In this case we can perform the Jones basic construction. Furthermore the C*--algebra of bimodule mappings with a right adjoint is a continuous field of…
Suppose a C*-algebra A acts by adjointable operators on a Hilbert A-module X. Pimsner constructed a C*-algebra O_X which includes, for particular choices of X, crossed products of A by Z, the Cuntz algebras O_n, and the Cuntz-Krieger algebras O_B. Here we analyse the representations of the corresponding Toeplitz algebra. One consequence is a uniqueness theorem for the Toeplitz-Cuntz-Krieger algebras of directed graphs, which includes Cuntz's uniqueness theorem for O_\infty.
A study of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules over commutative $C^*$-algebras is carried out and used to establish a sufficient condition for two quantum Heisenberg manifolds to be isomorphic.
Quasi-multipliers for a Hilbert C*-bimodule V were introduced by Brown, Mingo and Shen 1994 as a certain subset of the Banach bidual module V**. We give another (equivalent) definition of quasi-multipliers for Hilbert C*-bimodules using the centralizer approach and then show that quasi-multipliers are, in fact, universal (maximal) objects of a certain category. We also introduce quasi-multipliers for bimodules in Kasparov's sense and even for Banach bimodules over C*-algebras, provided these C*-algebras act non-degenerately. A topological picture of quasi-multipliers via the quasi-strict topol…
Pimsner introduced the C*-algebra O_X generated by a Hilbert bimodule X over a C*-algebra A. We look for additional conditions that X should satisfy in order to study simplicity and, more generally, the ideal structure of O_X when X is finite projective. We introduce two conditions: `(I)-freeness' and `(II)-freeness', stronger than the former, in analogy with [J. Cuntz, W. Krieger, Invent. Math. 56, 251-268] and [J. Cuntz, Invent. Math. 63, 25-40] respectively. (I)-freeness comprehend the case of the bimodules associated with an inclusion of simple C*-algebras with finite index, real or pseudo…
For bi-Hilbertian $A$-bimodules, in the sense of Kajiwara--Pinzari--Watatani, we construct a Kasparov module representing the extension class defining the Cuntz--Pimsner algebra. The construction utilises a singular expectation which is defined using the $C^*$-module version of the Jones index for bi-Hilbertian bimodules. The Jones index data also determines a novel quasi-free dynamics and KMS states on these Cuntz--Pimsner algebras.
After recalling in detail some basic definitions on Hilbert C*-bimodules, Morita equivalence and imprimitivity, we discuss a spectral reconstruction theorem for imprimitivity Hilbert C*-bimodules over commutative unital C*-algebras and consider some of its applications in the theory of commutative full C*-categories.
We consider C*-algebras generated by a single Hilbert bimodule (Pimsner-Toeplitz algebras) and by a product systems of Hilbert bimodules. We give a new proof of a theorem of Pimsner, which states that any representation of the generating bimodule gives rise to a representation of the Pimsner-Toeplitz algebra. Our proof does not make use of the conditional expectation onto the subalgebra invariant under the dual action of the circle group. We then prove the analogous statement for the case of product systems, generalizing a theorem of Arveson from the case of product systems of Hilbert spaces.
Let X be a Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra A and $O_X= A \rtimes_X \Z$. Using a finite section method we construct a sequence of completely positive contractions factoring through matrix algebras over A which act on $s_ξ s_η^*$ as Schur multipliers converging to the identity. This shows immediately that for a finitely generated X the algebra $O_X$ inherits any standard approximation property such as nuclearity, exactness, CBAP or OAP from A. We generalise this to certain general Pimsner algebras by proving semi-splitness of the Toeplitz extension under certain conditions and discuss some ex…
C*-endomorphisms arising from superselection structures with non-trivial centre define a 'rank' and a 'first Chern class'. Crossed products by such endomorphisms involve the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a vector bundle having the above-mentioned rank and first Chern class, and can be used to construct a duality for abstract (nonsymmetric) tensor categories vs. group bundles acting on (nonsymmetric) Hilbert bimodules. Existence and unicity of the dual object (i.e., the 'gauge' group bundle) are not ensured: we give a description of this phenomenon in terms of a certain moduli space associated with …
We introduce $C^*$-pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and (concrete) Hopf $C^*$-bimodules, which are $C^*$-algebraic variants of the pseudo-multiplicative unitaries on Hilbert spaces and the Hopf-von Neumann-bimodules studied by Enock, Lesieur, Vallin. Moreover, we associate to every regular $C^*$-pseudo-multiplicative unitary two Hopf-$C^*$-bimodules and discuss examples related to locally compact groupoids.
We regard a right Hilbert C*-module X over a C*-algebra A endowed with an isometric *-homomorphism ϕ: A\to L_A(X) as an object X_A of the C*-category of right Hilbert A-modules. Following a construction by the first author and Roberts, we associate to it a C*-algebra O_{X_A} containing X as a ``Hilbert A-bimodule in O_{X_A}''. If X is full and finite projective O_{X_A} is the C*-algebra C*(X), the generalization of the Cuntz-Krieger algebras introduced by Pimsner. More generally, C*(X) is canonically embedded in O_{X_A} as the C*-subalgebra generated by X. Conversely, if X is full, O_{X_A} is …
A $*$-bimodule for a unital $*$-algebra $A$ is an $A$-bimodule $X$ which is a vector space with involution $x\mapsto x^+$ satisfying $(a\cdot x\cdot b)^+=b^+\cdot x^+\cdot b^+$ for $x\in X$ and $a,b\in A$. An algebraic model for $*$-bimodules is given. Hilbert space representations of $*$-bimodules are defined and studied. A GNS-like representation theorem is obtained.
In this paper, we will introduce a notion of basis related Morita equivalence in the Cuntz--Krieger algebras $({\mathcal{O}_A}, \{S_a\}_{a \in E_A})$ with the canonical right finite basis $\{S_a\}_{a \in E_A}$ as Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule, and prove that two nonnegative irreducible matrices $A$ and $B$ are elementary equivalent, that is, $A = CD, B = DC$ for some nonnegative rectangular matrices $C, D$, if and only if the Cuntz--Krieger algebras $({\mathcal{O}_A}, \{S_a\}_{a \in E_A})$ and $({\mathcal{O}_B}, \{ S_b\}_{b\in E_B})$ with the canonical right finite bases are basis relatedly elementar…
Let H be a full Hilbert bimodule over a C*-algebra A. We show that the Cuntz-Pimsner C*-algebra associated to H is exact if and only if A is exact. Using this result, we give alternative proofs for exactness of reduced amalgamated free products of exact C*-algebras. In the case that A is a finite dimensional C*-algebra, we also show that the Brown-Voiculescu topological entropy of Bogljubov automorphisms of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra associated to an A,A Hilbert bimodule is zero.
It is shown that a C*-algebra generated by any faithful covariant representation of a Hilbert bimodule X is canonically isomorphic to the crossed product associated to X provided that Rieffel's induced representation functor X-ind is topologically free. It is discussed how this result could be applied to universal C*-algebras generated by relations with a circle gauge action. In particular, it leads to generalizations of isomorphism theorems for various crossed products, and is shown to be equivalent to Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for finite graph C*-algebras (on that occasion an intrigui…
A Hilbert $C^*$-quad module of finite type has a multi structure of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules with two finite bases. We will construct a $C^*$-algebra from a Hilbert $C^*$-quad module of finite type and prove its universality subject to certain relations among generators. Some examples of the $C^*$-algebras from Hilbert $C^*$-quad modules of finite type will be presented.
We introduce a way of regarding Hilbert von Neumann modules as spaces of operators between Hilbert space, not unlike [Skei], but in an apparently much simpler manner and involving far less machinery. We verify that our definition is equivalent to that of [Skei], by verifying the `Riesz lemma' or what is called `self-duality' in [Skei]. An advantage with our approach is that we can totally side-step the need to go through $C^*$-modules and avoid the two stages of completion - first in norm, then in the strong operator topology - involved in the former approach. We establish the analogue of the …
Given C$^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$ acting cyclically on Hilbert spaces $\h$ and $\k$, respectively, we characterize completely isometric $A,B$-bimodule maps from $\bkh$ into operator $A,B$-bimodules. We determine cogenerators in some classes of operator bimodules. For an injective cogenerator $X$ in a suitable category of operator $A,B$-bimodules we show: if $A$, regarded as a C$^*$-subalgebra of $\al(X)$ (adjointable left multipliers on $X$), is equal to its relative double commutant in $\al(X)$, then $A$ must be a W$^*$-algebra.
We introduce Rokhlin properties for certain discrete group actions on $C^*$-correspondences as well as on Hilbert bimodules and analyze them. It turns out that the group actions on any $C^*$-correspondence $E$ with Rokhlin property induces group actions on the associated $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal O_E$ with Rokhlin property and the group actions on any Hilbert bimodule with Rokhlin property induces group actions on the linking algebra with Rokhlin property. Permanence properties of several notions such as nuclear dimension and $\mathcal D$-absorbing property with respect to crossed product of Hil…
Recently Blecher and Kashyap have generalized the notion of W* modules over von Neumann algebras to the setting where the operator algebras are σ- weakly closed algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. They call these modules weak* rigged modules. We characterize the weak* rigged modules over nest algebras . We prove that Y is a right weak* rigged module over a nest algebra Alg(M) if and only if there exists a completely isometric normal representation ϕof Y and a nest algebra Alg(N) such that Alg(N)ϕ(Y)Alg(M) \subset ϕ(Y) while ϕ(Y) is implemented by a continuous nest homomorphism from M ont…
For two discrete metric spaces, $X$ and $Y$ we consider metrics on $X\sqcup Y$ compatible with the metrics on $X$ and $Y$. As morphisms from $X$ to $Y$ we consider the Roe bimodules, i.e. the norm closures of bounded finite propagation operators from $l^2(X)$ to $l^2(Y)$. We study the corresponding category $\mathcal M$, which is also a 2-category. We show that almost isometries determine morphisms in $\mathcal M$. We also consider the case $Y=X$, when there is a richer algebraic structure on the set of morphisms of $\mathcal M$: it is a partially ordered semigroup with the neutral element, wi…
The duality principle for Gabor frames is one of the pillars of Gabor analysis. We establish a far-reaching generalization to Morita equivalent $C^*$-algebras where the equivalence bimodule is a finitely generated projective Hilbert $C^*$-module. These Hilbert $C^*$-modules are equipped with some extra structure and are called Gabor bimodules. We formulate a duality principle for standard module frames for Gabor bimodules which reduces to the well-known Gabor duality principle for twisted group $C^*$-algebras of a lattice in phase space. We lift all these results to the matrix algebra level an…
For $A$ a $C^*$-algebra, $E_1, E_2$ two Hilbert bimodules over $A$, and a fixed isomorphism $χ: E_1\otimes_AE_2\to E_2\otimes_AE_1$, we consider the problem of computing the $K$-theory of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra ${\mathcal O}_{E_2\otimes_A{\mathcal O}_{E_1}}$ obtained by extending the scalars and by iterating the Pimsner construction. The motivating examples are a commutative diagram of Douglas and Howe for the Toeplitz operators on the quarter plane, and the Toeplitz extensions associated by Pimsner and Voiculescu to compute the $K$-theory of a crossed product. The applications are for Hilb…
We extend to Banach space nest algebras the theory of essential supports and support function pairs of their bimodules, thereby obtaining Banach space counterparts of long established results for Hilbert space nest algebras. Namely, given a Banach space nest algebra $\mathcal A$, we charaterise the maximal and the minimal $\mathcal A$-bimodules having a given essential support function or support function pair. These characterisations are complete except for the minimal $\mathcal A$-bimodule corresponding to a support function pair, in which case we make some headway. We also show that the wea…
A $C^*$-textile dynamical system $({\cal A}, ρ,η,Σ^ρ,Σ^η, κ)$ connsists of a unital $C^*$-algebra ${\cal A}$, two families of endomorphisms ${ρ_α}_{α\in Σ^ρ}$ and ${η_a}_{a \in Σ^η}$ of ${\cal A}$ and certain commutation relations $κ$ among them. It yields a two-dimensional subshift and multi structure of Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules, which we call a Hilbert $C^*$-quad module. We introduce a $C^*$-algebra from the Hilbert $C^*$-quad module as a two-dimensional analogue of Pimsner's construction of $C^*$-algebras from Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules. We study the $C^*$-algebras defined by the Hilbert $C^*$-…
Rigged modules over an operator algebra are a generalization of Hilbert modules over a $C^{\star}$-algebra. We characterize the rigged modules over an operator algebra $\mathcal A$ which are orthogonally complemented in $C_\infty(\mathcal A),$ the space of infinite columns with entries in $\mathcal A.$ We show that every such rigged module `restricts' to a bimodule of Morita equivalence between appropriate stably isomorphic operator algebras.
Let $G$ be a discrete group acting on a von Neumann algebra $M$ by properly outer $*$-automorphisms. In this paper we study the containment $M \subseteq M\rtimes_αG$ of $M$ inside the crossed product. We characterize the intermediate von Neumann algebras, extending earlier work of other authors in the factor case. We also determine the $M$-bimodules that are closed in the Bures topology and which coincide with the $w^*$-closed ones under a mild hypothesis on $G$. We use these results to obtain a general version of Mercer's theorem concerning the extension of certain isometric $w^*$-continuous …
The article discusses the interrelation between relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebras and partial isometric crossed products, and presents a procedure that reduces any given Hilbert bimodule to the "smallest" Hilbert bimodule yielding the same relative Cuntz-Pimsner algebra as the initial one. In the context of crossed products this reduction procedure corresponds to reduction of C*-dynamical systems.
In the setting of von Neumann algebras, measurable quantum groupoids have successfully been axiomatized and studied by Enock, Vallin, and Lesieur, whereas in the setting of $C^{*}$-algebras, a similar theory of locally compact quantum groupoids could not yet be developed. Some basic building blocks for such a theory, like analogues of a Hopf-von Neumann bimodule and of a pseudo-multiplicative unitary, were introduced in the thesis and a recent article by the author. That approach, however, is restricted to decomposable quantum groupoids which generalize $r$-discrete groupoids. Recently, we dev…
In this paper, we study bimodules over a von Neumann algebra $M$ in two related contexts. The first is an inclusion $M \subseteq M \rtimes_αG$, where $G$ is a discrete group acting on a factor $M$ by outer automorphisms. The second is a regular inclusion $M \subseteq N$ of finite factors. In the case of crossed products, we characterize the $M$-bimodules $X$ that lie between $M$ and $M \rtimes_αG$ and are closed in the Bures topology, in terms of the subsets of $G$. We show that this characterization also holds for $w^*$-closed bimodules when $G$ has the approximation property ($AP$), a class …
For any maximal coaction (A, G, delta) and any closed normal subgroup N of G, there exists an imprimitivity bimodule Y between the full crossed product A x G x N and A x G/N, together with a compatible coaction delta_Y of G. The assignment (A, delta) -> (Y, delta_Y) implements a natural equivalence between the crossed-product functors "x G x N" and "x G/N", in the category whose objects are maximal coactions of G and whose morphisms are isomorphism classes of right-Hilbert bimodule coactions of G.
Let U, V, and W be multiplicative unitaries coming from discrete Kac systems such that W is an amenable normal submultiplicative unitary of V with quotient U. We define notions for right-Hilbert bimodules of coactions of S_V and (S_V)^, their restrictions to S_W and (S_U)^, their dual coactions, and their full and reduced crossed products. If N(A) denotes the imprimitivity bimodule associated to any coaction of S_V on a C*-algebra A by Ng's imprimitivity theorem, then for any suitably nondegenerate injective coaction of S_V on a right-Hilbert A - B bimodule X we establish an isomorphism betwee…
We give a short proof of the nuclearity property of a class of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated with a Hilbert A-bimodule M, where A is a separable and nuclear C*-algebra. We assume that the left A-action on the bimodule M is given in terms of compact module operators and that M is direct summand of the standard Hilbert module over A.
This paper is about the reduced group C*-algebras of real reductive groups, and about Hilbert C*-modules over these C*-algebras. We shall do three things. First we shall apply theorems from the tempered representation theory of reductive groups to determine the structure of the reduced C*-algebra (the result has been known for some time, but it is difficult to assemble a full treatment from the existing literature). Second, we shall use the structure of the reduced C*-algebra to determine the structure of the Hilbert C*-bimodule that represents the functor of parabolic induction. Third, we sha…
We give a construction allowing to lift spectral triples to crossed products by Hilbert bimodules. The spectral triple one obtains is a concrete unbounded representative of the Kasparov product of the spectral triple and the Pimsner-Toeplitz extension associated to the crossed product by the Hilbert bimodule. To prove that the lifted spectral triple is the above-mentioned Kasparov product, we rely on operator-$*$-algebras and connexions.

We define notions of semi-saturatedness and orthogonality for a Fell bundle over a quasi-lattice ordered group. We show that a compactly aligned product system of Hilbert bimodules can be naturally extended to a semi-saturated and orthogonal Fell bundle whenever it is simplifiable. Conversely, a semi-saturated and orthogonal Fell bundle is completely determined by the positive fibres and its cross sectional $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra is isomorphic to a relative Cuntz--Pimsner algebra of a simplifiable product system of Hilbert bimodules. We show that this correspondence is part of an equivalence b…
We answer the title question for sigma-unital C*-algebras. The answer is that the algebra must be the direct sum of a dual C*-algebra and a C*-algebra satisfying a certain local unitality condition. We also discuss similar problems in the context of Hilbert C*-bimodules and imprimitivity bimodules and in the context of centralizers of Pedersen's ideal.
It was noticed recently that, given a metric space $(X,d_X)$, the equivalence classes of metrics on the disjoint union of the two copies of $X$ coinciding with $d_X$ on each copy form an inverse semigroup $M(X)$ with respect to concatenation of metrics. Now put this inverse semigroup construction in a more general context, namely, we define, for a C*-algebra $A$, an inverse semigroup $S(A)$ of Hilbert C*-$A$-$A$-bimodules. When $A$ is the uniform Roe algebra $C^*_u(X)$ of a metric space $X$, we construct a map $M(X)\to S(C^*_u(X))$ and show that this map is injective, but not surjective in gen…
