We prove the $L^{2}$ convergence for the linear multiple ergodic averages of commuting transformations $T_{1}, ..., T_{l}$, assuming that each map $T_i$ and each pair $T_iT_j^{-1}$ is ergodic for $i\neq j$. The limiting behavior of such averages is controlled by a particular factor, which is an inverse limit of nilsystems. As a corollary we show that the limiting behavior of linear multiple ergodic averages is the same for commuting transformations.
We find limits of some multiple ergodic averages, generalizing a result of Bergelson to the setting of two commuting transformations and actions of amenable groups.
We prove the norm convergence of multiple ergodic averages along cubes for several commuting transformations, and derive corresponding combinatorial results. The method we use relies primarily on the "magic extension" established recently by B. ~Host.
Recently, T. Tao gave a finitary proof a convergence theorem for multiple averages with several commuting transformations and soon later, T. Austin gave an ergodic proof of the same result. Although we give here one more proof of the same theorem, this is not the main goal of this paper. Our main concern is to provide some tools for the case of several commuting transformations, similar to the tools successfully used in the case of a single transformation, with the idea that they will be useful in the solution of other problems.
We study the limiting behavior of multiple ergodic averages involving several not necessarily commuting measure preserving transformations. We work on two types of averages, one that uses iterates along combinatorial parallelepipeds, and another that uses iterates along shifted polynomials. We prove pointwise convergence in both cases, thus answering a question of I.Assani in the former case, and extending results of B.Host-B.Kra and A.Leibman in the latter case. Our argument is based on some elementary uniformity estimates of general bounded sequences, decomposition results in ergodic theory,…
Let $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ be a probability space and let $T_1,..., T_l$ be $l$ commuting invertible measure preserving transformations \linebreak of $X$. We show that if $T_1^{c_1} ... T_l^{c_l}$ is ergodic for each $(c_1,...,c_l)\neq (0,...,0)$, then the averages $\frac{1}{|Φ_N|}\sum_{u\inΦ_N}\prod_{i=1}^r T_1^{p_{i1}(u)}... T_l^{p_{il}(u)}f_i$ converge in $L^2(μ)$ for all polynomials $p_{ij}\colon \mathbb{Z}^d\to\mathbb{Z}$, all $f_i\in L^{\infty}(μ)$, and all Følner sequences $\{Φ_N\}_{N=1}^{\infty}$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
We unify and extend some previous results about cubic ergodic averages and sets of positive density in products of groups. This provides a joint generalization of earlier work of the author in the case of two commuting actions of an amenable group, and of Q. Chu's recent result on a a finite number of commuting transformations.
Based on T.Tao's result of norm convergence of multiple ergodic averages for commut-ing transformation, we obtain there is a subsequence which converges almost everywhere. Meanwhile, the ergodic behaviour, which the time average is equal to the space average, of diagonal measures is obtained and we give different result according to the classification of transformations. Additionally, on the torus with special rotation. we can not only get the convergence in T.Tao's paper for every point in Td, but also get a beautiful result for ergodic behaviour.
We study double ergodic averages with respect to two general commuting transformations and establish a sharp quantitative result on their convergence in the norm. We approach the problem via real harmonic analysis, using recently developed methods for bounding multilinear singular integrals with certain entangled structure. A byproduct of our proof is a bound for a two-dimensional bilinear square function related to the so-called triangular Hilbert transform.
We describe characteristic factors for certain averages arising from commuting actions of locally compact, second-countable, amenable groups. Under some ergodicity assumptions we use these factors to prove a form of multiple recurrence for three such actions.
We study double averages along orbits for measure preserving actions of $\mathbb{A}^ω$, the direct sum of countably many copies of a finite abelian group $\mathbb{A}$. In this article we show an $L^p$ norm-variation estimate for these averages, which in particular reproves their convergence in $L^p$ for any finite $p$ and for any choice of two $L^\infty$ functions. The result is motivated by recent questions on quantifying convergence of multiple ergodic averages.
This paper is devoted to a study of the multiple recurrence of two commuting transformations. We derive a result which is similar but not identical to that of one single transformation established by Bergelson, Host and Kra. We will use the machinery of "magic systems" established recently by B. Host for the proof.
We prove mean convergence, as $N\to\infty$, for the multiple ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T_1^{p_1(n)}x)... f_\ell(T_\ell^{p_\ell(n)}x)$, where $p_1,...,p_\ell$ are integer polynomials with distinct degrees, and $T_1,...,T_\ell$ are commuting, invertible measure preserving transformations, acting on the same probability space. This establishes several cases of a conjecture of Bergelson and Leibman, that complement the case of linear polynomials, recently established by Tao. Furthermore, we show that, unlike the case of linear polynomials, for polynomials of distinct degrees, t…
Let $T_1, ..., T_l: X \to X$ be commuting measure-preserving transformations on a probability space $(X, \X, μ)$. We show that the multiple ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} f_1(T_1^n x) ... f_l(T_l^n x)$ are convergent in $L^2(X,\X,μ)$ as $N \to \infty$ for all $f_1,...,f_l \in L^\infty(X,\X,μ)$; this was previously established for $l=2$ by Conze and Lesigne and for general $l$ assuming some additional ergodicity hypotheses on the maps $T_i$ and $T_i T_j^{-1}$ by Frantzikinakis and Kra (with the $l=3$ case of this result established earlier by Zhang). Our approach is combinatoria…
The purpose of this note is to present my understanding of Tim Austin's proof of the multiple ergodic theorem for commuting transformations, emphasizing on the use of joinings, extensions and factors. The existence of a sated extension, which is a key argument in the proof, is presented in a general context.
We study multicorrelation sequences arising from systems with commuting transformations. Our main result is a refinement of a decomposition result of Frantzikinakis and it states that any multicorrelation sequences for commuting transformations can be decomposed, for every $ε>0$, as the sum of a nilsequence $ϕ(n)$ and a sequence $ω(n)$ satisfying $\lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N |ω(n)|<ε$ and $\lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{|\mathbb{P}\cap [N]|}\sum_{p\in \mathbb{P}\cap [N]} |ω(p)|<ε$.
Exploiting the recent work of Tao and Ziegler on a concatenation theorem on factors, we find explicit characteristic factors for multiple averages along polynomials on systems with commuting transformations, and use them to study criteria of joint ergodicity for sequences of the form $(T^{p_{1,j}(n)}_{1}\cdot\ldots\cdot T^{p_{d,j}(n)}_{d})_{n\in\mathbb{Z}},$ $1\leq j\leq k$, where $T_{1},\dots,T_{d}$ are commuting measure preserving transformations on a probability measure space and $p_{i,j}$ are integer polynomials. To be more precise, we provide a sufficient condition for such sequences to b…
Huang, Shao and Ye recently studied pointwise multiple averages by using suitable topological models. Using a notion of dynamical cubes introduced by the authors, the Huang-Shao-Ye technique and the Host machinery of magic systems, we prove that for a system $(X,μ,S,T)$ with commuting transformations $S$ and $T$, the average \[\frac{1}{N^2} \sum_{i,j=0}^{N-1} f_0(S^i x)f_1(T^j x)f_2(S^i T^j x)\] converges a.e. as $N$ goes to infinity for any $f_1,f_2,f_3\in L^{\infty}(μ)$.
Let $(X,μ)$ be a probability space, $G$ a countable amenable group and $(F_n)_n$ a left Følner sequence in $G$. This paper analyzes the non-conventional ergodic averages \[\frac{1}{|F_n|}\sum_{g \in F_n}\prod_{i=1}^d (f_i\circ T_1^g\cdots T_i^g)\] associated to a commuting tuple of $μ$-preserving actions $T_1$, ..., $T_d:G\curvearrowright X$ and $f_1$, ..., $f_d \in L^\infty(μ)$. We prove that these averages always converge in $\|\cdot\|_2$, and that they witness a multiple recurrence phenomenon when $f_1 = \ldots = f_d = 1_A$ for a non-negligible set $A\subseteq X$. This proves a conjecture o…
We will show that the sequences appearing in Bourgain's double recurrence result are good universal weights to the multiple recurrence averages with commuting measure-preserving transformations in norm. This will extend the pointwise converge result of Bourgain, the norm convergence result of Tao, and the authors' previous work on the single measure-preserving transformation.
We apply Walsh's method for proving norm convergence of multiple ergodic averages to arbitrary amenable groups. We obtain convergence in the uniform Cesàro sense for their polynomial actions and for ``triangular'' averages associated to commuting homomorphic actions. The latter generalizes a result due to Bergelson, McCutcheon, and Zhang in the case of two actions.
We show that all rank-one transformations are subsequence boundedly rationally ergodic and that there exist rank-one transformations that are not weakly rationally ergodic.
We define a random walk adic transformation associated to an aperiodic random walk on $G=\mathbb{Z}^{k}\times\mathbb{R}^{D-k}$ driven by a $β$-transformation and study its ergodic properties. In particular, this transformation is conservative, ergodic, infinite measure preserving and we prove that it is asymptotically distributionally stable and bounded rationally ergodic. Related earlier work appears in [AS] and [ANSS] for random walk adic transformations associated to an aperiodic random walk driven by a subshift of finite type.
We study the pointwise convergence of some weighted averages linked to averages along cubes. We show that if $(X,\mathcal{B},μ, T_i)$ are not necessarily commuting measure preserving systems on the same finite measure space and if $f_i,$ $1\leq i\leq 6$ are bounded functions then the averages $$\frac{1}{N^3}\sum_{n, m, p=1}^N f_1(T_1^nx) f_2(T_2^mx) f_3(T_3^px) f_4(T_4^{n+m}x) f_5(T_5^{n+p}x) f_6(T_6^{m+p}x)$$ converge almost everywhere.
We show some results about the Hausdorff dimension of particular minimal but not uniquely ergodic interval exchange transformations. There is an appendix which shows that typical points for two different ergodic measures of an interval exchange can approximate each other differently.
We offer a generalization of the recent result of Tao (building on earlier results of Conze and Lesigne, Furstenberg and Weiss, Zhang, Host and Kra, Frantzikinakis and Kra and Ziegler) that the nonconventional ergodic averages associated to an arbitrary number of commuting probability-preserving transformations always converge to some limit in L^2. We prove the corresponding result for a collection of commuting actions of a larger discrete Abelian group, and gives convergence that is uniform in the start-point of the averages. While Tao's proof rests on a conversion to a finitary problem, we i…
A rank-one infinite measure preserving flow $T=(T_t)_{t\in\Bbb R}$ is constructed such that for each $t\ne 0$, the Cartesian powers of the transformation $T_t$ are all ergodic.
We show that for every ergodic system $(X,μ,T_1,\ldots,T_d)$ with commuting transformations, the average \[\frac{1}{N^{d+1}} \sum_{0\leq n_1,\ldots,n_d \leq N-1} \sum_{0\leq n\leq N-1} f_1(T_1^n \prod_{j=1}^d T_j^{n_j}x)f_2(T_2^n \prod_{j=1}^d T_j^{n_j}x)\cdots f_d(T_d^n \prod_{j=1}^d T_j^{n_j}x). \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to\infty$. If $X$ is distal, we prove that the average \[\frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=0}^{N} f_1(T_1^nx)f_2(T_2^nx)\cdots f_d(T_d^nx) \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to\infty$. We also establish the pointwise convergence of averages along cubical configurations…
We give examples of rank-one transformations that are (weak) doubly ergodic and rigid (so all their cartesian products are conservative), but with non-ergodic $2$-fold cartesian product. We give conditions for rank-one infinite measure-preserving transformations to be (weak) doubly ergodic and for their $k$-fold cartesian product to be conservative. We also show that a (weak) doubly ergodic nonsingular group action is ergodic with isometric coefficients, and that the latter strictly implies W measurable sensitivity.
In the paper a Volterra quadratic stochastic operators of three dimensional simplex into itself is considered. The full description of ergodic properties such operators is given.
Let $(X,\mathcal{A}, μ)$ be a probability measure space and let $T_i,$ $1\leq i\leq H,$ be commuting invertible measure preserving transformations on this measure space. We prove the following pointwise results; The averages $$\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T_1^nx)f_2(T_2^nx)\cdots f_H(T_H^nx)$$ converge a.e. for every function $f_i \in L^{\infty}(μ)$ .\\ As a consequence if $T_i = T^i$ for $1\leq i \leq H$ where $T$ is an invertible measure preserving transformation on $(X, \mathcal{A}, μ)$ then the averages $$\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N f_1(T^nx)f_2(T^{2n}x)...f_H(T^{Hn}x)$$ converge a.e. This solv…
We construct a class of rank-one infinite measure-preserving transformations such that for each transformation $T$ in the class, the cartesian product $T\times T$ of the transformation with itself is ergodic, but the product $T\times T^{-1}$ of the transformation with its inverse is not ergodic. We also prove that the product of any rank-one transformation with its inverse is conservative, while there are infinite measure-preserving conservative ergodic Markov shifts whose product with their inverse is not conservative.
We study two properties of nonsingular and infinite measure-preserving ergodic systems: weak double ergodicity, and ergodicity with isometric coefficients. We show that there exist infinite measure-preserving transformations that are ergodic with isometric coefficients but are not weakly doubly ergodic. We also give type $\text{III}_λ$ examples of such systems, $0<λ\leq 1$. We prove that under certain hypotheses, systems that are weakly mixing are ergodic with isometric coefficients and along the way we give an example of a uniformly rigid topological dynamical system along the sequence $(n_i)…
We show that if $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,S,T)$ is an ergodic measure preserving system with commuting transformations $S$ and $T$, then the average \[\frac{1}{N^3} \sum_{i,j,k=0}^{N-1} f_0(S^j T^k x) f_1 (S^{i+j} T^k x) f_2 (S^j T^{i+k} x)\] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to \infty$ for $f_0,f_1, f_2\in L^\infty(μ)$. We also show that if $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,S,T)$ is a measurable distal system, the average \[ \frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=0}^{N-1} f_1 (S^i x) f_2 (T^i x) \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to \infty$ for $f_1,f_2\in L^{\infty}(μ)$.
A criterion of joint ergodicity of several sequences of transformations of a probability measure space $X$ of the form $T_{i}^{ϕ_{i}(n)}$ is given for the case where $T_{i}$ are commuting measure preserving transformations of $X$ and $ϕ_{i}$ are integer valued generalized linear functions, that is, the functions formed from conventional linear functions by an iterated use of addition, multiplication by constants, and the greatest integer function. We also establish a similar criterion for joint ergodicity of families of transformations depending of a continuous parameter, as well as a conditio…
We study the rich behavior of ergodicity and conservativity of Cartesian products of infinite measure preserving transformations. A class of transformations is constructed such that for any subset $R\subset \mathbb Q\cap (0,1)$ there exists $T$ in this class such that $T^p\times T^q$ is ergodic if and only if $\frac{p}{q} \in R$. This contrasts with the finite measure preserving case where $T^p\times T^q$ is ergodic for all nonzero $p$ and $q$ if and only if $T\times T$ is ergodic. We also show that our class is rich in the behavior of conservative products. For each positive integer $k$, a fa…
We prove that mixing on rank-one transformations is equivalent to the spacer sequence being slice-ergodic. Slice-ergodicity, introduced in this paper, generalizes the notion of ergodic sequence to the uniform convergence of ergodic averages (as in the mean ergodic theorem) over subsequences of partial sums. We show that polynomial staircase transformations satisfy this condition and therefore are mixing.
We prove that a rank one transformation satisfying a condition called restricted growth is a mixing transformation if and only if the spacer sequence for the transformation is uniformly ergodic. Uniform ergodicity is a generalization of the notion of ergodicity for sequences in the sense that the mean ergodic theorem holds for what we call dynamical sequences. In particular, Adams' class of staircase transformations and Ornstein's class constructed using ``random spacers'' have both restricted growth and uniformly ergodic spacer sequences.
I show that there exist minimal interval exchange transformations with an ergodic measure whose Hausdorff dimension is arbitrarily small, even 0. I will also show that in particular cases one can bound the Hausdorff dimension between $\frac 1 {2r+4}$ and $\frac 1 r$ for any r greater than 1.
There is only one fully supported ergodic invariant probability measure for the adic transformation on the space of infinite paths in the graph that underlies the Eulerian numbers. This result may partially justify a frequent assumption about the equidistribution of random permutations.
By establishing Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for commutative transformations on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space, in this paper, we investigate Pesin's entropy formula and SRB measures of a finitely generated random transformations on such space via its commuting generators. Moreover, as an application, we give a formula of Friedland's entropy for certain $C^{2}$ $\mathbb{N}^2$-actions.
The conservative sequence of a set $A$ under a transformation $T$ is the set of all $n \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $T^n A \cap A \not = \varnothing$. By studying these sequences, we prove that given any countable collection of nonsingular transformations with no finite invariant measure $\{T_i\}$, there exists a rank-one transformation $S$ such that $T_i \times S$ is not ergodic for all $i$. Moreover, $S$ can be chosen to be rigid or have infinite ergodic index. We establish similar results for $\mathbb{Z}^d$ actions and flows. Then, we find sufficient conditions on rank-one transformations $T$ …
We study the notions of weak rational ergodicity and rational weak mixing as defined by Jon Aaronson. We prove that various families of infinite measure-preserving rank-one transformations possess (or do not posses) these properties, and consider their relation to other notions of mixing in infinite measure.
We examine some of the properties of uniformly rigid transformations, and analyze the compatibility of uniform rigidity and (measurable) weak mixing along with some of their asymptotic convergence properties. We show that on Cantor space, there does not exist a finite measure-preserving, totally ergodic, uniformly rigid transformation. We briefly discuss general group actions and show that (measurable) weak mixing and uniform rigidity can coexist in a more general setting.
We define an infinite measure-preserving transformation to have infinite symmetric ergodic index if all finite Cartesian products of the transformation and its inverse are ergodic, and show that infinite symmetric ergodic index does not imply that all products of powers are conservative, so does not imply power weak mixing. We provide a sufficient condition for $k$-fold and infinite symmetric ergodic index and use it to answer a question on the relationship between product conservativity and product ergodicity. We also show that a class of rank-one transformations that have infinite symmetric …
We answer positively a question of Ryzhikov, namely we show that being a relatively weakly mixing extension is a comeager property in the Polish group of measure preserving transformations. We study some related classes of ergodic transformations and their interrelations. In the second part of the paper we show that for a fixed ergodic T with property A, a generic extension $\hat{T}$ of T also has the property A. Here A stands for each of the following properties: (i) having the same entropy as T, (ii) Bernoulli, (iii) K, and (iv) loosely Bernoulli.
It is shown that there exist a subsequence for which the multiple ergodic averages of commuting invertible measure preserving transformations of a Lebesgue probability space converge almost everywhere provided that the maps are weakly mixing with an ergodic extra condition. The proof provides a example of non-singular dynamical system for which the maximal ergodic inequality does not hold. We further get that the non-singular strategy to solve the pointwise convergence of the Furstenberg ergodic averages fails.
