A criterion of joint ergodicity of several sequences of transformations of a probability measure space $X$ of the form $T_{i}^{ϕ_{i}(n)}$ is given for the case where $T_{i}$ are commuting measure preserving transformations of $X$ and $ϕ_{i}$ are integer valued generalized linear functions, that is, the functions formed from conventional linear functions by an iterated use of addition, multiplication by constants, and the greatest integer function. We also establish a similar criterion for joint ergodicity of families of transformations depending of a continuous parameter, as well as a condition of joint ergodicity of sequences $T_{i}^{ϕ_{i}(n)}$ along primes.
We show that, under finitely many ergodicity assumptions, any multicorrelation sequence defined by invertible measure preserving $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions with multivariable integer polynomial iterates is the sum of a nilsequence and a null sequence, extending a recent result of the second author. To this end, we develop a new seminorm bound estimate for multiple averages by improving the results in a previous work of the first, third and fourth authors. We also use this approach to obtain new criteria for joint ergodicity of multiple averages with multivariable polynomial iterates on $\mathbb{Z}…
Examining multiple ergodic averages whose iterates are integer parts of real valued polynomials for totally ergodic systems, we provide various characterizations of total joint ergodicity, meaning that an average converges to the "expected" limit along every arithmetic progression. In particular, we obtain a complete characterization when the number of iterates is at most two, and disprove a conjecture of the first author. We also improve a result of Frantzikinakis on joint ergodicity of Hardy field functions of at most polynomial growth for totally ergodic systems, which extends a conjecture …
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for joint ergodicity results for systems of commuting measure preserving transformations for an iterated Hardy field function of polynomial growth. Our method builds on and improves recent techniques due to Frantzikinakis and Tsinas, who dealt with multiple ergodic averages along Hardy field functions; it also enhances an approach introduced by the authors and Ferré Moragues to study polynomial iterates. The more general expression, in which the iterate is a linear combination of a Hardy field function of polynomial growth and a tempered function,…
Exploiting the recent work of Tao and Ziegler on a concatenation theorem on factors, we find explicit characteristic factors for multiple averages along polynomials on systems with commuting transformations, and use them to study criteria of joint ergodicity for sequences of the form $(T^{p_{1,j}(n)}_{1}\cdot\ldots\cdot T^{p_{d,j}(n)}_{d})_{n\in\mathbb{Z}},$ $1\leq j\leq k$, where $T_{1},\dots,T_{d}$ are commuting measure preserving transformations on a probability measure space and $p_{i,j}$ are integer polynomials. To be more precise, we provide a sufficient condition for such sequences to b…
We apply the techniques of our previous paper to study joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and joint eigenfunctions of the two partial Laplacians on compact quotients of $\mathbb{H}\times\mathbb{H}$. In both cases, we show that quantum limit measures of such sequences of eigenfunctions carry positive entropy on almost every ergodic component. Together with prior work of the second named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions.
We study joint quasimodes of the Laplacian and one Hecke operator on compact congruence surfaces, and give conditions on the orders of the quasimodes that guarantee positive entropy on almost every ergodic component of the corresponding semiclassical measures. Together with the measure classification result of the second-named author, this implies Quantum Unique Ergodicity for such functions. Our result is optimal with respect to the dimension of the space from which the quasi-mode is constructed. We also study equidistribution for sequences of joint quasimodes of the two partial Laplacians on…
In this paper, we consider generalized wind-tree models and $\Z^d$-covers over compact translation surfaces. Under suitable hypothesis, we prove recurrence of the linear flow in a generic direction and non-ergodicity of Lebesgue measure.
A collection of integer sequences is jointly ergodic if for every ergodic measure preserving system the multiple ergodic averages, with iterates given by this collection of sequences, converge in the mean to the product of the integrals. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for joint ergodicity that are flexible enough to recover most of the known examples of jointly ergodic sequences and also allow us to answer some related open problems. An interesting feature of our arguments is that they avoid deep tools from ergodic theory that were previously used to establish similar results. Our…
We study mean convergence of multiple ergodic averages, where the iterates arise from smooth functions of polynomial growth that belong to a Hardy field. Our results include all logarithmico-exponential functions of polynomial growth, such as the functions $t^{3/2}, t\log t$ and $e^{\sqrt{\log t}}$. We show that if all non-trivial linear combinations of the functions $a_1,...,a_k$ stay logarithmically away from rational polynomials, then the $L^2$-limit of the ergodic averages $\frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^{N}f_1(T^{\lfloor{a_1(n)}\rfloor}x)\cdots f_k(T^{\lfloor{a_k(n)}\rfloor}x)$ exists and is equa…
In our earlier paper, a generalized Dobrushin ergodicity coefficient of Markov operators (acting on abstract state spaces) with respect to a projection $P$, has been introduced and studied. It turned out that the introduced coefficient was more effective than the usual ergodicity coefficient. In the present work, by means of a left consistent Markov projections and the generalized Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficient, we investigate uniform and weak $P$-ergodicities of non-homogeneous discrete Markov chains (NDMC) on abstract state spaces. It is easy to show that uniform $P$-ergodicity implies a…
We establish mean convergence for multiple ergodic averages with iterates given by distinct fractional powers of primes and related multiple recurrence results. A consequence of our main result is that every set of integers with positive upper density contains patterns of the form $\{m,m+[p_n^a], m+[p_n^b]\}$, where $a,b$ are positive non-integers and $p_n$ denotes the $n$-th prime, a property that fails if $a$ or $b$ is a natural number. Our approach is based on a recent criterion for joint ergodicity of collections of sequences and the bulk of the proof is devoted to obtaining good seminorm …
Microscopic theory of Brownian motion of a particle of mass $M$ in a bath of molecules of mass $m\ll M$ is considered beyond lowest order in the mass ratio $m/M$. The corresponding Langevin equation contains nonlinear corrections to the dissipative force, and the generalized Fokker-Planck equation involves derivatives of order higher than two. These equations are derived from first principles with coefficients expressed in terms of correlation functions of microscopic force on the particle. The coefficients are evaluated explicitly for a generalized Rayleigh model with a finite time of molecul…
We prove a generalized version of the Quantum Ergodicity Theorem on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary. We apply it to prove some asymptotic properties on the distribution of typical eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in geometric situations where the Liouville measure is not (or not known to be) ergodic.
Invariant ergodic measures for generalized Boole type transformations are studied using an invariant quasi-measure generating function approach based on special solutions to the Frobenius--Perron operator. New two-dimensional Boole type transformations are introduced, and their invariant measures and ergodicity properties are analyzed.
We investigate the relations holding among generalized dimensions of invariant measures in dynamical systems and similar quantities defined by the scaling of global averages of powers of return times. Because of a heuristic use of Kac theorem, these latter have been used in place of the former in numerical and experimental investigations; to mark this distinction, we call them return time dimensions. We derive a full set of inequalities linking measure and return time dimensions and we comment on their optimality with the aid of two maps due to von Neumann -- Kakutani and to Gaspard -- Wang. W…
