Recently, T. Tao gave a finitary proof a convergence theorem for multiple averages with several commuting transformations and soon later, T. Austin gave an ergodic proof of the same result. Although we give here one more proof of the same theorem, this is not the main goal of this paper. Our main concern is to provide some tools for the case of several commuting transformations, similar to the tools successfully used in the case of a single transformation, with the idea that they will be useful in the solution of other problems.
Exploiting the recent work of Tao and Ziegler on a concatenation theorem on factors, we find explicit characteristic factors for multiple averages along polynomials on systems with commuting transformations, and use them to study criteria of joint ergodicity for sequences of the form $(T^{p_{1,j}(n)}_{1}\cdot\ldots\cdot T^{p_{d,j}(n)}_{d})_{n\in\mathbb{Z}},$ $1\leq j\leq k$, where $T_{1},\dots,T_{d}$ are commuting measure preserving transformations on a probability measure space and $p_{i,j}$ are integer polynomials. To be more precise, we provide a sufficient condition for such sequences to b…
Dynamical systems that are contracting on a subspace are said to be semicontracting. Semicontraction theory is a useful tool in the study of consensus algorithms and dynamical flow systems such as Markov chains. To develop a comprehensive theory of semicontracting systems, we investigate seminorms on vector spaces and define two canonical notions: projection and distance semi-norms. We show that the well-known lp ergodic coefficients are induced matrix seminorms and play a central role in stability problems. In particular, we formulate a duality theorem that explains why the Markov-Dobrushin c…
Based on T.Tao's result of norm convergence of multiple ergodic averages for commut-ing transformation, we obtain there is a subsequence which converges almost everywhere. Meanwhile, the ergodic behaviour, which the time average is equal to the space average, of diagonal measures is obtained and we give different result according to the classification of transformations. Additionally, on the torus with special rotation. we can not only get the convergence in T.Tao's paper for every point in Td, but also get a beautiful result for ergodic behaviour.
We study double ergodic averages with respect to two general commuting transformations and establish a sharp quantitative result on their convergence in the norm. We approach the problem via real harmonic analysis, using recently developed methods for bounding multilinear singular integrals with certain entangled structure. A byproduct of our proof is a bound for a two-dimensional bilinear square function related to the so-called triangular Hilbert transform.
We show that for every ergodic system $(X,μ,T_1,\ldots,T_d)$ with commuting transformations, the average \[\frac{1}{N^{d+1}} \sum_{0\leq n_1,\ldots,n_d \leq N-1} \sum_{0\leq n\leq N-1} f_1(T_1^n \prod_{j=1}^d T_j^{n_j}x)f_2(T_2^n \prod_{j=1}^d T_j^{n_j}x)\cdots f_d(T_d^n \prod_{j=1}^d T_j^{n_j}x). \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to\infty$. If $X$ is distal, we prove that the average \[\frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=0}^{N} f_1(T_1^nx)f_2(T_2^nx)\cdots f_d(T_d^nx) \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to\infty$. We also establish the pointwise convergence of averages along cubical configurations…
We use techniques of proof mining to obtain a computable and uniform rate of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for the mean ergodic theorem for a finite number of commuting linear contractive operators on a uniformly convex Banach space.
By establishing Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for commutative transformations on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space, in this paper, we investigate Pesin's entropy formula and SRB measures of a finitely generated random transformations on such space via its commuting generators. Moreover, as an application, we give a formula of Friedland's entropy for certain $C^{2}$ $\mathbb{N}^2$-actions.
We show that if $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,S,T)$ is an ergodic measure preserving system with commuting transformations $S$ and $T$, then the average \[\frac{1}{N^3} \sum_{i,j,k=0}^{N-1} f_0(S^j T^k x) f_1 (S^{i+j} T^k x) f_2 (S^j T^{i+k} x)\] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to \infty$ for $f_0,f_1, f_2\in L^\infty(μ)$. We also show that if $(X,\mathcal{X},μ,S,T)$ is a measurable distal system, the average \[ \frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=0}^{N-1} f_1 (S^i x) f_2 (T^i x) \] converges for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$ as $N\to \infty$ for $f_1,f_2\in L^{\infty}(μ)$.
In this note we present a proof of multiple recurrence for ergodic systems (and thereby of Szemerédi's theorem) being a mixture of three known proofs. It is based on a conditional version of the Jacobs-de Leeuw-Glicksberg decomposition and properties of the Gowers-Host-Kra uniformity seminorms.
The paper is primarily concerned with the asymptotic behavior as $N\to\infty$ of averages of nonconventional arrays having the form $N^{-1}\sum_{n=1}^N\prod_{j=1}^\ell T^{P_j(n,N)}f_j$ where $f_j$'s are bounded measurable functions, $T$ is an invertible measure preserving transformation and $P_j$'s are polynomials of $n$ and $N$ taking on integer values on integers. It turns out that when $T$ is weakly mixing and $P_j(n,N)=p_jn+q_jN$ are linear or, more generally, have the form $P_j(n,N)=P_j(n)+Q_j(N)$ for some integer valued polynomials $P_j$ and $Q_j$ then the above averages converge in $L^2…
We study mean convergence results for weighted multiple ergodic averages defined by commuting transformations with iterates given by integer polynomials in several variables. Roughly speaking, we prove that a bounded sequence is a good universal weight for mean convergence of such averages if and only if the averages of this sequence times any nilsequence converge. Key role in the proof play two decomposition results of independent interest. The first states that every bounded sequence in several variables satisfying some regularity conditions is a sum of a nilsequence and a sequence that has …
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of lattice points in the sets \[ \mathbf S_{h_1, h_2, h_3}(λ): =\{x\in\mathbb Z_+^3:\lfloor h_1(x_1)\rfloor+\lfloor h_2(x_2)\rfloor+\lfloor h_3(x_3)\rfloor=λ\} \quad \text{with}\quad λ\in\mathbb Z_+; \] where functions $h_1, h_2, h_3$ are constant multiples of regularly varying functions of the form $h(x):=x^c\ell_h(x)$, where the exponent $c>1$ (but close to $1$) and a function $\ell_h(x)$ is taken from a certain wide class of slowly varying functions. Taking $h_1(x)=h_2(x)=h_3(x)=x^c$ we will also derive an asymptotic formula for the number o…
