By the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence and Faltings' isogeny theorem, it is known that the abelian variety J_0^{Dpq}(N) (the Jacobian of a Shimura curve of discriminant Dpq with Gamma_0(N) level structure) is isogenous to the pq-new subvariety of J_0^D(pqN), whenever p and q are distinct primes not dividing D or N. However, this approach is entirely nonconstructive, and gives no information at all about any particular isogeny between the two varieties. In this paper, we determine the kernels of all possible maps from one variety to the other up to support on a small finite set of maximal ideals of the Hecke algebra. We also examine consequences of this computation for the geometry of Jacobians of Shimura curves. In particular, we obtain a "multiplicity one" result for certain Galois representations in the torsion of Jacobians of such curves.
The main goal of this article is to give an explicit rigid analytic uniformization of the maximal toric quotient of the Jacobian of a Shimura curve over the field of rational numbers at a prime dividing exactly the level. This result can be viewed as complementary to the classical theorem of Cerednik and Drinfeld which provides rigid analytic uniformizations at primes dividing the discriminant. As a corollary, we offer a proof of a conjecture formulated by M. Greenberg in his paper on Stark-Heegner points and quaternionic Shimura curves, thus making Greenberg's construction of local points on …
We present explicit models for Shimura curves X_D and Atkin-Lehner quotients X_D/w_m of them of genus 2. We show that several equations conjectured by Kurihara are correct and compute for them the kernel of Ribet's isogeny J_0(D)^{new} --> J_D between the new part of the Jacobian of the modular curve X_0(D) and the Jacobian of X_D.
Let $p$ and $q$ be distinct primes. Consider the Shimura curve $\mathcal{X}$ associated to the indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $pq$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian variety of $\mathcal{X}$, which is an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$. For an odd prime $\ell$, we provide sufficient conditions for the non-existence of rational points of order $\ell$ on $J$. As an application, we find some non-trivial subgroups of the kernel of an isogeny from the new quotient of $J_0(pq)$ to $J$.
We construct a family of special cycle classes on the regular integral model of an orthogonal Shimura variety, and show that these cycle classes appear as Fourier coefficients of a Siegel modular form. Passing to the generic fiber of the Shimura variety recovers a result of Bruinier and Raum, originally conjectured by Kudla.
We define modular equations in the setting of PEL Shimura varieties as equations describing Hecke correspondences, and prove upper bounds on their degrees and heights. This extends known results about elliptic modular polynomials, and implies complexity bounds for number-theoretic algorithms using these modular equations. In particular, we obtain tight degree bounds for modular equations of Siegel and Hilbert type for abelian surfaces.
In this paper we prove that there are finitely many modular curves that admit a smooth plane model. Moreover, if the degree of the model is greater than or equal to 19, no such curve exists. For modular curves of Shimura type we show that none can admit a smooth plane model of degree 5, 6 or 7. Further, if a modular curve of Shimura type admits a smooth plane model of degree 8 we show that it must be a twist of one of four curves.
We consider several maps that occur naturally between modular Shimura varieties, Hilbert-Blumenthal varieties and the moduli spaces of polarized abelian varieties when forgetting certain endomorphism structures. We prove that, up to birational equivalences, these forgetful maps coincide with the natural projection by suitable abelian groups of Atkin-Lehner involutions.
In this work, we set up a theory of p-adic modular forms over Shimura curves over totally real fields which allows us to consider also non-integral weights. In particular, we define an analogue of the sheaves of k-th invariant differentials over the Shimura curves we are interested in, for any p-adic character. In this way, we are able to introduce the notion of overconvergent modular form of any p-adic weight. Moreover, our sheaves can be put in p-adic families over a suitable rigid-analytic space, that parametrizes the weights. Finally, we define Hecke operators, including the U operator, th…
In this paper I continue the study of iterated integrals of modular forms and noncommutative modular symbols for $Γ\subset SL(2,\bold{Z})$ started in [Ma3]. Main new results involve a description of the iterated Shimura cohomology and the image of the iterated Shimura cocycle class inside it. The concluding section of the paper contains a concise review of the classical modular symbols for SL(2) and a discussion of open problems.
We consider two families of arithmetic divisors defined on integral models of Shimura curves. The first was studied by Kudla, Rapoport and Yang, who proved that if one assembles these divisors in a formal generating series, one obtains the q-expansion of a modular form of weight 3/2. The present work concerns the Shimura lift of this modular form: we identify the Shimura lift with a generating series comprised of unitary divisors, which arose in recent work of Kudla and Rapoport regarding cycles on Shimura varieties of unitary type. In the prequel to this paper, the author considered the geome…
The object of this work is to present the status of art of an open problem: to provide an analogue for Shimura curves of the Ihara's lemma \cite{Ihara73} which holds for modular curves. We will describe our direct result towards the "Problem of Ihara" and we will present some possible approaches to it, giving a formulation of our conjecture in terms of congruence subgroup problem for quaternion algebras. Since some modular forms can be reinterpreted as elements of the cohomology of Shimura curves, we will describe a consequence of the "Problem of Ihara" about congruence modules of modular form…
In the classical setting, the modular equation of level $N$ for the modular curve $X_0(1)$ is the polynomial relation satisfied by $j(τ)$ and $j(Nτ)$, where $j(τ)$ is the standard elliptic $j$-function. In this paper, we will describe a method to compute modular equations in the setting of Shimura curves. The main ingredient is the explicit method for computing Hecke operators on the spaces of modular forms on Shimura curves developed in [13].
We introduce the concept of quadratic modular symbol and study how these symbols are related to quadratic p-adic L-functions. These objects were introduced in [3] in the case of modular curves. In this paper, we discuss a method to attach quadratic modular symbols and quadratic p-adic L-functions to more general Shimura curves.
We extend the relation between quasi-modular forms and modular forms to a wider class of functions. We then relate both forms to vector-valued modular forms with symmetric power representations, and prove a general structure theorem for these vector-valued forms.
It is known that K3 surfaces S whose Picard number rho (= rank of the Neron-Severi group of S) is at least 19 are parametrized by modular curves X, and these modular curves X include various Shimura modular curves associated with congruence subgroups of quaternion algebras over Q. In a family of such K3 surfaces, a surface has rho=20 if and only if it corresponds to a CM point on X. We use this to compute equations for Shimura curves, natural maps between them, and CM coordinates well beyond what could be done by working with the curves directly as we did in ``Shimura Curve Computations'' (199…
We show how to realize the Shimura lift of arbitrary level and character using the vector-valued theta lifts of Borcherds. Using the regularization of Borcherds' lift we extend the Shimura lift to take weakly holomorphic modular forms of half-integral weight to meromorphic modular forms of even integral weight having poles at CM points.
We investigate the various types of weight raising and weight lowering operators on quasi-modular forms, or equivalently on Shimura's vector-valued modular forms involving symmetric power representations. We also present all the eigenfunctions of the two possible Laplacian operators.
In this article we prove several level lowering results for cuspidal automorphic representations occurring in the cohomology of the Siegel modular threefold with paramodular level structure by adapting a method of Ribet in his proof of the Serre's epsilon conjecture. The proof is purely geometric and relies on the description of the supersingular locus of certain quaternionic unitary Shimura variety and an arithmetic level raising result on this Shimura variety. The heart of the proof is a comparison of the dimension of the space of vanishing cycles on the paramodular Siegel modular threefold …
We study $p$-adic integral models of certain PEL Shimura varieties with level subgroup at $p$ related to the $Γ_1(p)$-level subgroup in the case of modular curves. We will consider two cases: the case of Shimura varieties associated with unitary groups that split over an unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and the case of Siegel modular varieties. We construct local models, i.e. simpler schemes which are étale locally isomorphic to the integral models. Our integral models are defined by a moduli scheme using the notion of an Oort-Tate generator of a group scheme. We use these local models t…
In this article we give a method to construct preimages for the Shimura correspondence on Hilbert modular forms of odd and square-free level. The method relies in the ideas presented for the rational case by Pacetti and Tornaría, and is such that the Fourier coefficients of the preimages constructed can be computed explicitly.
We give a new proof of Faltings's p-adic Eichler-Shimura decomposition of the modular curves via BGG methods and the Hodge-Tate period map. The key property is the relation between the Tate module and the Faltings extension, which was already used in the original proof. Then, we construct overconvergent Eichler-Shimura (ES) maps for the modular curves providing ''the second half'' of the overconvergent ES map of Andreatta-Iovita-Stevens. We use higher Coleman theory on the modular curve developed by Boxer-Pilloni to show that the small slope part of the ES maps interpolates the classical p-adi…
Up to isomorphism over C, every simple principally polarized abelian variety of dimension 3 is the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve of genus 3. Furthermore, this curve is either a hyperelliptic curve or a plane quartic. Given a sextic CM field K, we show that if there exists a hyperelliptic Jacobian with CM by K, then all principally polarized abelian varieties that are Galois conjugated to it are hyperelliptic. Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we give an algorithm for computing approximations of the invariants of the initial curve, as well as their Galois conjugates. This allows us ton d…
Poonen and Stoll have shown that the reduced Shafarevich-Tate group of a principally polarized abelian variety over a global field can have order twice a square (the odd case) as well as a square (the even case). For a curve over a global field, they give a local diophantine criterion for its jacobian to be even or odd. In this note we use the Cherednik-Drinfeld p-adic uniformization to study the local points and divisors on certain Atkin-Lehner quotients of Shimura curves. We exhibit an explicit family of such quotient curves over the rationals with odd jacobians, with genus going to infinity…
We give a new construction of overconvergent modular forms of arbitrary weights, defining them in terms of functions on certain affinoid subsets of Scholze's infinite-level modular curve. These affinoid subsets, and a certain canonical coordinate on them, play a role in our construction which is strongly analogous with the role of the upper half-plane and its coordinate `z' in the classical analytic theory of modular forms. As one application of these ideas, we define and study an overconvergent Eichler-Shimura map in the context of compact Shimura curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, proving stronger an…
By considering the intersections of Shimura curves and Humbert surfaces on the Siegel modular threefold, we obtain new class number relations. The result is a higher-dimensional analogue of the classical Hurwitz-Kronecker class number relation.
In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.
We show that a given rational Shimura curve Y with strictly maximal Higgs field in the moduli space of g-dimensional abelian varieties does not generically intersect the Schottky locus for large g. We achieve this by using a result of Viehweg and Zuo which says that if Y parameterizes a family of curves of genus g, then the corresponding family of Jacobians is isogenous over Y to the g-fold product of a modular family of elliptic curves. After reducing the situation from the field of complex numbers to a finite field, we will see, combining the Weil and Sato-Tate conjectures, that this is impo…
We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.
Let f be a newform, as specified by its Hecke eigenvalues, on a Shimura curve X. We describe a method for evaluating f. The most interesting case is when X arises as a compact quotient of the hyperbolic plane, so that classical q-expansions are not available. The method takes the form of an explicit, rapidly-convergent formula that is well-suited for numerical computation. We apply it to the problem of computing modular parametrizations of elliptic curves, and illustrate with some numerical examples.
Based upon new global class field concepts leading to Langlands two-dimensional global correspondences,a modular representation of cusp forms is proposed in terms of global elliptic (bisemi)modules which are (truncated) Fourier series over R.As application, the conjectures of Shimura-Taniyama-Weil,Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer and Riemann are analyzed.
We generalize some of the results of Andreatta, Iovita, and Pilloni and the author to Hodge type Shimura varieties having non-empty ordinary locus. For any $p$-adic weight $κ$, we give a geometric definition of the space of overconvergent modular forms of weight $κ$ in terms of sections of a sheaf. We show that our sheaves live in analytic families, interpolating the classical sheaves for integral weights. We define an action of the Hecke algebra, including a completely continuous operator at $p$. In some simple cases, we also build the eigenvariety.
We provide a geometric Hodge-Tate map giving generic description of the overconvergent modular symbols of some p-adic (accessible) weight k, base-changed to C_p, in terms of overconvergent modular forms of weight k+2.
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.
We determine the Shimura modular curve X_0(3) and the Jacobian of the Shimura modular curve X_1(3) associated with the congruence subgroups Gamma_0(3), Gamma_1(3) of the (2,3,7) triangle group. This group is known to be arithmetic and associated with a quaternion algebra A/K ramified at two of the three real places of K=Q(\cos 2π/7) and at no finite primes of K. Since the rational prime 3 is inert in K, the covering X_0(3)/X(1) has degree 28 and Galois group PSL_2(F_27). We determine X_0(3) by computing this cover. We find that X_0(3) is an elliptic curve of conductor 147=3*7^2 over Q, as is t…
We demonstrate that the 3-power torsion points of the Jacobians of the principal modular curves X(3^n) are fixed by the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation of the pro-3 fundamental group of the projective line minus three points. The proof proceeds by demonstrating the curves in question satisfy a two-part criterion given by Anderson and Ihara. Two proofs of the second part of the criterion are provided; the first relies on a theorem of Shimura, while the second uses the moduli interpretation.
This paper concerns two families of divisors, which we call the `orthogonal' and `unitary' special cycles, defined on integral models of Shimura curves. The orthogonal family was studied extensively by Kudla-Rapoport-Yang, who showed that they are closely related to the Fourier coefficients of modular forms of weight 3/2, while the `unitary' divisors are analogues of cycles appearing in more recent work of Kudla-Rapoport on unitary Shimura varieties. Our main result shows that these two families are related by (a formal version of) the Shimura lift.
The $j$-function acts as a parametrization of the classical modular curve. Its values at complex multiplication (CM) points are called singular moduli and are algebraic integers. A Shimura curve is a generalization of the modular curve and, if the Shimura curve has genus 0, a rational parameterizing function exists and when evaluated at a CM point is again algebraic over $\mathbb{Q}$. This paper shows that the coordinate maps for the Shimura curves associated to the quaternion algebras with discriminants 6 and 10 are Borcherds lifts of vector-valued modular forms. This property is then used to…
We define a theta operator on p-adic vector-valued modular forms on unitary groups of arbitrary signature, over a quadratic imaginary field in which p is inert. We study its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions and prove that it extends holomorphically beyond the μ-ordinary locus, when applied to scalar-valued forms.
We describe a method to determine all the isomorphism classes of principal polarizations of the modular abelian surfaces $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication attached to a normalized newform $f$ without complex multiplication. We include an example of $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication for which we find numerically a curve $C$ whose Jacobian is $A_f$ up to numerical approximation, and we prove that it has quaternionic multiplication and is isogenous to $A_f$.
This article has three goals. First, we generalize the result of Deuring and Serre on the characterization of supersingular locus of modular curves to all Shimura varieties given by totally indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. Second, we generalize the result of Ribet on arithmetic level raising to such Shimura varieties in the inert case. Third, as an application to number theory, we use the previous results to study the Selmer group of certain triple product motive of an elliptic curve, in the context of the Bloch--Kato conjecture.
For every point on the Jacobian of the modular curve $X_0(l)$ we define and study certain twisted holomorphic Eisenstein series. These are particular cases of a more general notion of twisted modular forms which correspond to sections on the modular curve $X_1(l)$ of the degree zero twists of line bundles of usual modular forms. We conjecture that a point on the Jacobian is rational if and only if the ratios of these twisted Eisenstein series of the same weights have rational coefficients.
