We determine the Shimura modular curve X_0(3) and the Jacobian of the Shimura modular curve X_1(3) associated with the congruence subgroups Gamma_0(3), Gamma_1(3) of the (2,3,7) triangle group. This group is known to be arithmetic and associated with a quaternion algebra A/K ramified at two of the three real places of K=Q(\cos 2π/7) and at no finite primes of K. Since the rational prime 3 is inert in K, the covering X_0(3)/X(1) has degree 28 and Galois group PSL_2(F_27). We determine X_0(3) by computing this cover. We find that X_0(3) is an elliptic curve of conductor 147=3*7^2 over Q, as is the Jacobian J_1(3) of X_1(3); that these curves are related by an isogeny of degree (27-1)/2=13; and that the kernel of the 13-isogeny from J_1(3) to X_0(3) consists of K-rational points. We explain these properties, use X_0(3) to locate some complex multiplication (CM) points on X(1), and describe analogous behavior of a few Shimura curves associated with quaternion algebras over other cyclic cubic fields.
In this paper we study the geodesic continued fraction in the case of the Shimura curve coming from the $(2,3,7)$-triangle group. We construct a certain continued fraction expansion of real numbers using the so-called coding of the geodesics on the Shimura curve, and prove the Lagrange type periodicity theorem for the expansion which captures the fundamental relative units of quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}(\cos(2π/7))$ with rank one relative unit groups. We also discuss the convergence of these continued fractions.
We compute the canonical model of the cover of Shimura curves $X_0(2) \to X(1)$ for the cubic field of discriminant 13^2 described at the end of Elkies' paper "Shimura curves for level 3 subgroups of the (2,3,7) triangle group". Last, we list the coordinates of some rational CM points on X(1).
We study $p$-adic integral models of certain PEL Shimura varieties with level subgroup at $p$ related to the $Γ_1(p)$-level subgroup in the case of modular curves. We will consider two cases: the case of Shimura varieties associated with unitary groups that split over an unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and the case of Siegel modular varieties. We construct local models, i.e. simpler schemes which are étale locally isomorphic to the integral models. Our integral models are defined by a moduli scheme using the notion of an Oort-Tate generator of a group scheme. We use these local models t…
We consider Shimura varieties for orthogonal or spin groups acting on hermitian symmetric domains of type IV. We give regular p-adic integral models for these varieties over odd primes p at which the level subgroup is the connected stabilizer of a vertex lattice in the orthogonal space. Our construction is obtained by combining results of Kisin and the first author with an explicit presentation and resolution of a corresponding local model.
Let $(G,X)$ be a Shimura variety of PEL type such that $G_{{\bf Q}_2}$ is a split ${\bf GSO}_{2n}$ group with $n\ge 2$. We prove the existence of the integral canonical models of ${\rm Sh}(G,X)/H_2$ in unramified mixed characteristic $(0,2)$, where $H_2$ is a hyperspecial subgroup of $G({\bf Q}_2)$.
The object of this work is to present the status of art of an open problem: to provide an analogue for Shimura curves of the Ihara's lemma \cite{Ihara73} which holds for modular curves. We will describe our direct result towards the "Problem of Ihara" and we will present some possible approaches to it, giving a formulation of our conjecture in terms of congruence subgroup problem for quaternion algebras. Since some modular forms can be reinterpreted as elements of the cohomology of Shimura curves, we will describe a consequence of the "Problem of Ihara" about congruence modules of modular form…
It is known that K3 surfaces S whose Picard number rho (= rank of the Neron-Severi group of S) is at least 19 are parametrized by modular curves X, and these modular curves X include various Shimura modular curves associated with congruence subgroups of quaternion algebras over Q. In a family of such K3 surfaces, a surface has rho=20 if and only if it corresponds to a CM point on X. We use this to compute equations for Shimura curves, natural maps between them, and CM coordinates well beyond what could be done by working with the curves directly as we did in ``Shimura Curve Computations'' (199…
The motivation for this paper is the study of arithmetic properties of Shimura varieties, in particular the Newton stratification of the special fiber of a suitable integral model at a prime with parahoric level structure. This is closely related to the structure of Rapoport-Zink spaces and of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We prove a Hodge-Newton decomposition for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and for the special fibres of Rapoport-Zink spaces, relating these spaces to analogous ones defined in terms of Levi subgroups, under a certain condition (Hodge-Newton decomposability) which can b…
We study the local factor at p of the semi-simple zeta function of a Shimura variety of Drinfeld type for a level structure given at p by the pro-unipotent radical of an Iwahori subgroup. Our method is an adaptation to this case of the Langlands-Kottwitz counting method. We use Hecke algebra isomorphisms to determine the test functions at p.
We study the noncommutative modular curve (which was already studied by Connes, Manin and Marcolli), and the space of geodesics on the usual modular curve, from the viewpoint of algebraic groups, linear algebra and class field theory. This allows us, first, to understand differently some aspects of Manin's real multiplication program, and secondly, to study higher dimensional analogs of the noncommutative modular curve, called irrational or noncommutative boundaries of Shimura varieties. These are double cosets spaces $L\backslash G(\mathbb{R})/P(K)$ where $G$ is a connected reductive algebrai…
We parametrize the commensurability classes of curves on Shimura surfaces that are totally geodesic, i.e., the commensurability classes of so-called $\mathbb{C}$-Fuchsian subgroups. In particular, if a Shimura surface contains one commensurability class of totally geodesic curves, it contains infinitely many.
We study the group of automorphisms of Shimura curves $X_0(D, N)$ attached to an Eichler order of square-free level $N$ in an indefinite rational quaternion algebra of discriminant $D>1$. We prove that, when the genus $g$ of the curve is greater than or equal to 2, $\Aut (X_0(D, N))$ is a 2-elementary abelian group which contains the group of Atkin-Lehner involutions $W_0(D, N)$ as a subgroup of index 1 or 2. It is conjectured that $\Aut (X_0(D, N)) = W_0(D, N)$ except for finitely many values of $(D, N)$ and we provide criteria that allow us to show that this is indeed often the case. Our met…
We construct certain subgroups of hyperbolic triangle groups which we call "congruence" subgroups. These groups include the classical congruence subgroups of SL_2(ZZ), Hecke triangle groups, and 19 families of arithmetic triangle groups associated to Shimura curves. We determine the field of moduli of the curves associated to these groups and thereby realize the groups PSL_2(q) and PGL_2(q) regularly as Galois groups.
Beyond the crucial role they play in the foundations of the theory of overconvergent modular forms, canonical subgroups have found new applications to analytic continuation of overconvergent modular forms. For such applications, it is essential to understand various ``numerical'' aspects of the canonical subgroup, and in particular, the precise extent of its overconvergence. We develop a theory of canonical subgroups for a general class of curves (including the unitary and quaternionic Shimura curves), using formal and rigid geometry. In our approach, we use the common geometric features of th…
Mazur's principle gives a criterion under which an irreducible mod l Galois representation arising from a classical modular form of level Np (with p prime to N) also arises from a classical modular form of level N. We consider the analogous question for Galois representations arising from certain unitary Shimura varieties. In particular, we prove an analoge of Mazur's principle for U(2,1) Shimura varities. We also give a conjectural criterion for a Galois representation arising in the cohomology of a unitary Shimura variety whose level subgroup is parahoric at p to also arise in the cohomology…
Let $p$ and $q$ be distinct primes. Consider the Shimura curve $\mathcal{X}$ associated to the indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $pq$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian variety of $\mathcal{X}$, which is an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$. For an odd prime $\ell$, we provide sufficient conditions for the non-existence of rational points of order $\ell$ on $J$. As an application, we find some non-trivial subgroups of the kernel of an isogeny from the new quotient of $J_0(pq)$ to $J$.
We study the geometry of unitary Shimura varieties without assuming the existence of an ordinary locus. We prove, by a simple argument, the existence of canonical subgroups on a strict neighborhood of the $μ$-ordinary locus (with an explicit bound). We then define the overconvergent modular forms (of classical weight), as well as the relevant Hecke operators. Finally, we show how an analytic continuation argument can be adapted to this case to prove a classicality theorem, namely that an overconvergent modular form which is an eigenform for the Hecke operators is classical under certain assump…
We prove that the set of CM points on the Shimura curve associated to an Eichler order inside an indefinite quaternion $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra, is in bijection with the set of certain classes of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms, where $p$ is a prime dividing the discriminant of the quaternion algebra. The classes of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms are obtain by the action of a discrete and cocompact subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ arising from the $p$-adic uniformization of the Shimura curve. We finally compute families of $p$-adic binary quadratic forms associated to an infinite fa…
Let $(G,X)$ be a Shimura pair of Hodge type such that $G$ is the Mumford--Tate group of some elements of $X$. We assume that for each simple factor $G_0$ of $G^{\ad}$ there exists a simple factor of $G_{0\dbR}$ which is compact. Let $N\Ge 3$. We show that for many compact open subgroups $K$ of $G(\dbA_f)$, the Shimura variety $\Sh(G,X)/K$ has a projective integral model $\scrN$ over $\dbZ[{1\over N}]$ which is a finite scheme over a certain Mumford moduli scheme $\scrA_{g,1,N}$. Equivalently, we show that if $A$ is an abelian variety over a number field and if the Mumford--Tate group of $A_{\d…
We describe the structure of the supersingular locus of a Shimura variety for a quaternionic unitary similitude group of degree $2$ over a ramified odd prime $p$ if the level at $p$ is given by a special maximal compact open subgroup. More precisely, we show that such a locus has purely $2$-dimensional, and every irreducible component is birational to the Fermat surface. Furthermore, we have an estimation of the numbers of connected and irreducible components. To prove these assertions, we completely determine the structure of the underlying reduced scheme of the Rapoport--Zink space for the q…
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple group over ${\Bbb Q}$. Given a maximal compact subgroup $K\subset G({\Bbb R})$ such that $X=G({\Bbb R})/K$ is a Hermitian symmetric domain, and a convenient arithmetic subgroup $Γ\subset G({\Bbb Q})$, one constructs a (connected) Shimura variety $S=S(Γ)=Γ\backslash X$. If $H\subset G$ is a connected semisimple subgroup such that $H({\Bbb R})\cap K$ is maximal compact, then $Y=H({\Bbb R})/K$ is a Hermitian symmetric subdomain of $X$. For each $g\in G({\Bbb Q})$ one can construct a connected Shimura variety $S(H,g)=(H({\Bbb Q})\cap g^{-1}Γg)\backslash Y$ and a n…
Let $Sh_K(G,μ)$ be a Shimura variety of KHT type, as introduced in Harris-Taylor book, associated to some similitude group $G/\mathbb Q$ and a open compact subgroup $K$ of $G(\mathbb A)$. For any irreducible algebraic $\overline{\mathbb Q}_l$-representation $ξ$ of $G$, let $V_ξ$ be the $\mathbb Z_l$-local system on $Sh_K(G,μ)$. From my paper about p-stabilization, we know that if we allow the local component $K_l$ of $K$ to be small enough, then there must exists some non trivial cohomology classes with coefficient in $V_ξ$. The aim of this paper is then to construct explicitly such torsion cl…
Let $F$ be a totally real field, $\mathfrak{p}$ an unramified place of $F$ dividing $p$ and $\overline{r}: \mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ a continuous irreducible modular representation. The work of Buzzard, Diamond and Jarvis associates to $\overline{r}$ an admissible smooth representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F_\mathfrak{p})$ on the mod $p$ cohomology of Shimura curves attached to indefinite division algebras which split at $\mathfrak{p}$. When $\overline{r}|_{\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F_\mathfrak{p}}/F_\mathfrak{p})}$ is tamely ramified and generic …
We give a construction of a new $p$-adic Maass-Shimura operator defined on an affinoid subdomain of the preperfectoid $p$-adic universal cover $\mathcal{Y}$ of a modular curve $Y$. We define a new notion of $p$-adic modular forms as sections of a certain sheaf $\mathcal{O}_Δ$ of "nearly rigid functions" which transform under the action of subgroups of the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathcal{Y}/Y)$ by $\mathcal{O}_Δ^{\times}$-valued weight characters. This extends Katz's notion of $p$-adic modular forms as functions on the Igusa tower $Y^{\mathrm{Ig}}$; indeed we may recover Katz's theory by re…
Given a correspondence between a modular curve and an elliptic curve A we study the group of relations among the CM points of A. In particular we prove that the intersection of any finite rank subgroup of A with the set of CM points of A is finite. We also prove a local version of this global result with an effective bound valid also for certain infinite rank subgroups. We deduce the local result from a ``reciprocity'' theorem for CL (canonical lift) points on A. Furthermore we prove similar global and local results for intersections between subgroups of A and isogeny classes in A. Finally we …
We investigate modular embeddings for semi-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. First we prove some purely algebro-geometric or even topological criteria for a regular map from a smooth complex curve to a quaternionic Shimura variety to be covered by a modular embedding. Then we set up an adelic formalism for modular embeddings and apply our criteria to study the effect of abstract field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$ on modular embeddings. Finally we derive that the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$ operates on the dessins d'enfants defined by principal congruence subgroups of (arithmetic or non-ar…

We give continued fraction algorithms for a particular class of Fuchsian triangle groups. In particular, we give an explicit form of each such group that is a subgroup of the Hilbert modular group of its trace field and provide an interval map that is piecewise linear fractional, given in terms of group elements. Using natural extensions, we find an ergodic invariant measure for the interval map. We also study diophantine properties of approximation in terms of the continued fractions; and furthermore show that these continued fractions are appropriate to obtain transcendence results.
We analyze complex multiplication for Jacobians of curves of genus 3, as well as the resulting Shimura class groups and their subgroups corresponding to Galois conjugation over the reflex field. We combine our results with numerical methods to find CM fields $K$ for which there exist both hyperelliptic and non-hyperelliptic curves whose Jacobian has complex multiplication by $\mathbb{Z}_K$. More precisely, we find all sextic CM fields $K$ in the LMFDB for which (heuristically) Jacobians of both types with CM by $\mathbb{Z}_K$ exist. There turn out to be 14 such fields among the 547,156 sextic …
Given a correspondence between a modular curve $S$ and an elliptic curve $A$, we prove that the intersection of any finite-rank subgroup of $A$ with the set of points on $A$ corresponding to an isogeny class on $S$ is finite. The question was proposed by A. Buium and B. Poonen in 2009. We follow the strategy proposed by the authors, using a result about the equidistribution of Hecke points on Shimura varieties and Serre's open image theorem. The result is an instance of the Zilber-Pink conjecture.
Triangular modular curves are a generalization of modular curves that arise from quotients of the upper half-plane by congruence subgroups of hyperbolic triangle groups. These curves also arise naturally as a source of Belyi maps with monodromy $\text{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ or $\text{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We present a computational approach to enumerate Borel-type triangular modular curves of low genus, and we carry out this enumeration for prime level and small genus.
