For every point on the Jacobian of the modular curve $X_0(l)$ we define and study certain twisted holomorphic Eisenstein series. These are particular cases of a more general notion of twisted modular forms which correspond to sections on the modular curve $X_1(l)$ of the degree zero twists of line bundles of usual modular forms. We conjecture that a point on the Jacobian is rational if and only if the ratios of these twisted Eisenstein series of the same weights have rational coefficients.
In this paper, we study the torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ over the field generated by those points in the cuspidal group, where $N$ is an odd positive integer. We prove that, considered as Hecke modules, this group and the cuspidal subgroup are both supported at the maximal Eisenstein ideals.
New expressions are given for the Fourier expansions of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series with weight $k$. Among other applications, this leads to non-holomorphic analogs of formulas of Ramanujan, Grosswald and Berndt containing Eichler integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series.
Let $X$ be a smooth, compact, projective Kähler variety and $D$ be a divisor of a holomorphic form $F$, and assume that $D$ is smooth up to codimension two. Let $ω$ be a Kähler form on $X$ and $K_{X}$ the corresponding heat kernel which is associated to the Laplacian that acts on the space of smooth functions on $X$. Using various integral transforms of $K_{X}$, we will construct a meromorphic function in a complex variable $s$ whose special value at $s=0$ is the log-norm of $F$ with respect to $μ$. In the case when $X$ is the quotient of a symmetric space, then the function we construct is a …
Higher-order non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to a Fuchsian group $Γ$ are defined by twisting the series expansion for classical non-holomorphic Eisenstein series by powers of modular symbols. Their functional identities include multiplicative and additive factors, making them distinct from classical Eisenstein series. Here we prove the meromorphic continuation of these series and establish their functional equations. In addition, we construct high rank vector bundles $\cal V$ from certain unipotent representations $π$ of $Γ$ and show that higher-order non-holomorphic Eisenstein se…
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
We study nearly holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series of general levels and characters on $\mathbb{H}_{2n}$, the Siegel upper half space of degree $2n$. We prove that the Fourier coefficients of these Eisenstein series (once suitably normalized) lie in the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for all sufficiently large primes $p$. We also prove that the pullbacks of these Eisenstein series to $\mathbb{H}_n \times \mathbb{H}_n$ are cuspidal under certain assumptions.
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of…
We introduce a new family of real analytic modular forms on the upper half plane. They are arguably the simplest class of `mixed' versions of modular forms of level one and are constructed out of real and imaginary parts of iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series. They form an algebra of functions satisfying many properties analogous to classical holomorphic modular forms. In particular, they admit expansions in $q, \overline{q}$ and $\log |q|$ involving only rational numbers and single-valued multiple zeta values. The first non-trivial functions in this class are real analytic Eis…
Consider a subgroup of finite index of modular group. We give an analytic criterion for a cuspidal divisor to be torsion in the Jacobian of the corresponding modular curve. By BelyI theorem, such a criterion would apply to any curve over a number field. Our main tool is the explicit description, in terms of modular symbols, of what we call Eisenstein cycles. The latter are representations of relative homology classes over which integration of any holomorphic differential forms vanishes. Our approach relies in an essential way on the specific case , where we can consider convenient generalized …
We study certain types of Fuchsian groups of the first kind denoted by $R(N)$, which coincide with the Fricke groups or the arithmetic Hecke triangle groups of low levels. We find all elliptic points and cusps of $R(p)$ for a prime $p$, and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of equivalence classes of elliptic points of $R(p)$ and the imaginary quadratic class group. We also find the explicit formula of the Fourier expansion of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for $R(N)$ and study their analytic properties. These non-holomorphic Eisenstein series together with …
Let $N$ be a non-squarefree positive integer and let $\ell$ be an odd prime such that $\ell^2$ does not divide $N$. Consider the Hecke ring $\mathbb{T}(N)$ of weight $2$ for $Γ_0(N)$, and its rational Eisenstein primes of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ containing $\ell$, defined in Section 3. If $\mathfrak{m}$ is such a rational Eisenstein prime, then we prove that $\mathfrak{m}$ is of the form $(\ell, ~\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N})$, where the ideal $\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N}$ of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ is also defined in Section 3. Furthermore, we prove that $\mathcal{C}(N)[\mathfrak{m}] \neq 0$, where $\mathcal{C}(N)$ is the …
We construct a p-adic Eisenstein measure with values in the space of p-adic automorphic forms on certain unitary groups. Using this measure, we p-adically interpolate certain special values of both holomorphic and non-holomorphic Eisenstein series, as both the archimedean and the p-adic weights of the Eisenstein series vary.
The classical Kronecker limit formula gives the constant term of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series E(z,s) for SL(2,Z) at s=1 in terms of the Dedekind eta function. Here we compute the analagous formula for an Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols (periods of weight two holomorphic cusp forms) for general Fuchsian groups of the first kind.

Let $Γ\subset\mathrm{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ be a Fuchsian subgroup of the first kind acting by fractional linear transformations on the upper half-plane $\mathbb{H}$, and let $M=Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ be the associated finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface. Associated to any cusp of $M$, there is the classically studied non-holomorphic (parabolic) Eisenstein series. In 1979, Kudla and Millson studied non-holomorphic (hyperbolic) Eisenstein series associated to any closed geodesic on $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. In 2004, Jorgenson and Kramer introduced so-called elliptic Eisenstein series associa…
Shimura studied the analytic properties of the non-holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series and derived a residue formula. Herein, we provide a refinement of his result for several types of Eisenstein series.
Let $\mathcal{C}_N$ be the cuspidal subgroup of the Jacobian $J_0(N)$ for a square-free integer $N>6$. For any Eisenstein maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ of the Hecke ring of level $N$, we show that $\mathcal{C}_N[\mathfrak{m}]\neq 0$. To prove this, we calculate the index of an Eisenstein ideal $\mathcal{I}$ contained in $\mathfrak{m}$ by computing the order of a cuspidal divisor annihilated by $\mathcal{I}$.
We study the Eisenstein ideal of Drinfeld modular curves of small levels, and the relation of the Eisenstein ideal to the cuspidal divisor group and the component groups of Jacobians of Drinfeld modular curves. We prove that the characteristic of the function field is an Eisenstein prime number when the level is an arbitrary non square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ not equal to a square of a prime.
In this paper we study iterated Eisenstein τ-integrals and multiple Eisenstein L-series, they are functions on the complex upper half plane and form two Q-algebras. They reduce to iterated Eisenstein integrals and multiple Hecke L-functions with respect to Eisenstein series respectively after analytic extension when τ->0. We give the relations among them and prove the linear independence of their elements. Finally, we explain the connections among double Eisenstein L-functions and holomorphic double modular values.
We show that the periods of the holomorphic Eisenstein series of level 1, parallel weight 2, on a Hilbert modular surface are not rational, even up to scaling. This is deduced from a study of the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the Hilbert modular surface, where we find extension classes related to the units of the real quadratic field. We prove similar results for Hilbert modular varieties of all dimensions, and produce extensions of Galois representations in étale cohomology. The key point is to study the restriction of the canonical extension of the Hodge bundle to the boundary o…
The classical Kronecker limit formula describes the constant term in the Laurent expansion at the first order pole of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to the cusp at infinity of the modular group. Recently, the meromorphic continuation and Kronecker limit type formulas were investigated for non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to hyperbolic and elliptic elements of a Fuchsian group of the first kind by Jorgenson, Kramer and the first named author. In the present work, we realize averaged versions of all three types of Eisenstein series for $Γ_0(N)$ as regularized theta …
At first a type of Eisenstein series is defined as distributions giving nearly-holomorphic automorphic forms on a totally real field, with different expressions (integral, summation) ; then these are shown to satisfied the expected properties, and the Fourier coefficients are explicitly computed. Finally, an explicit computation shows that in the simplest case, the abstract object considered simplify down to the most classical version of Eisenstein series.
We identify the quantum limits of scattering states for the modular surface. This is obtained through the study of quantum measures of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series away from the critical line. We provide a range of stability for the quantum unique ergodicity theorem of Luo and Sarnak.
We show how our p-adic method to compute Galois representations occurring in the torsion of Jacobians of algebraic curves can be adapted to modular curves. The main ingredient is the use of "moduli-friendly" Eisenstein series introduced by Makdisi, which allow us to evaluate modular forms at p-adic of modular curves points and dispenses us of the need for equations of modular curves and for q-expansion computations. The resulting algorithm compares very favourably to the complex-analytic method.
The low-energy expansion of closed-string scattering amplitudes at genus one introduces infinite families of non-holomorphic modular forms called modular graph forms. Their differential and number-theoretic properties motivated Brown's alternative construction of non-holomorphic modular forms in the recent mathematics literature from so-called equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals. In this work, we provide the first validations beyond depth one of Brown's conjecture that equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals contain modular graph forms. Apart from a variety of examples at depth two and…
W. Luo and P. Sarnak have proved the quantum unique ergodicity property for Eisenstein series on $\rm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}) \backslash H$. We extend their result to Eisenstein series on $\rm{PSL}(2,O) \backslash H^n$, where $O$ is the ring of integers in a totally real field of degree $n$ over $Q$ with narrow class number one, using the Eisenstein series considered by I. Efrat. We also give an expository treatment of the theory of Hecke operators on non-holomorphic Hilbert modular forms.
For any odd integer N, we explicitly write down the Eisenstein cycles in the first homology group of modular curves of level N as linear combinations of Manin symbols. These cycles are, by definition, those over which every integral of holomorphic differential forms vanish. Our result can be seen as an explicit version of the Manin-Drinfeld Theorem. Our method is to characterize such Eisenstein cycles as eigenvectors for the Hecke operators. We make crucial use of expressions of Hecke actions on modular symbols and on auxiliary level 2 structures.
Multiple Eisenstein series are holomorphic functions in the complex upper-half plane, which can be seen as a crossbreed between multiple zeta values and classical Eisenstein series. They were originally defined by Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier in 2006, and since then, many variants and regularizations of them have been studied. They give a natural bridge between the world of modular forms and multiple zeta values. In this note, we give a new algebraic interpretation of stuffle regularized multiple Eisenstein series based on the Hopf algebra structure of the harmonic algebra introduced by Hoffman.
We develop two applications of the Kronecker's limit formula associated to elliptic Eisenstein series: A factorization theorem for holomorphic modular forms, and a proof of Weil's reciprocity law. Several examples of the general factorization results are computed, specifically for certain moonshine groups, congruence subgroups, and, more generally, non-compact subgroups with one cusp. In particular, we explicitly compute the Kronecker limit function associated to certain elliptic points for a few small level moonshine groups.
Borisov and Gunnells observed in 2001 that certain linear relations between products of two holomorphic weight 1 Eisenstein series had the same structure as the relations between periods of modular forms; a similar phenomenon exists in higher weights. We give a conceptual reason for this observation in arbitrary weight. This involves an unconventional way of expanding the Rankin-Selberg convolution of a cusp form with an Eisenstein series. We also prove a partial result towards understanding the action of a Hecke operator on a product of two Eisenstein series.
For primitive non-trivial Dirichlet characters $χ_1$ and $χ_2$, we study the weight zero newform Eisenstein series $E_{χ_1,χ_2}(z,s)$ at $s=1$. The holomorphic part of this function has a transformation rule that we express in finite terms as a generalized Dedekind sum. This gives rise to the explicit construction (in finite terms) of elements of $H^1(Γ_0(N), \mathbb{C})$. We also give a short proof of the reciprocity formula for this Dedekind sum.
In the theory of elliptic functions and elliptic curves, the Weierstrass $zeta$ function (which is essentially an antiderivative of the Weierstrass $\wp$ function) plays a prominent role. Although it is not an elliptic function, Eisenstein constructed a simple (non-holomorphic) completion of this form which is doubly periodic. This theorem has begun to play an important role in the theory of harmonic Maass forms, and was crucial to work of Guerzhoy as well as Alfes, Griffin, Ono, and the author. In particular, this simple completion of $ζ$ provides a powerful method to construct harmonic Maass…
We have shown in a preceeding paper how to normalize intertwining operators for classical groups using the twisted endoscopy lifting. In this paper, we prove that the image of such an operator in the cases interesting in the theory of Eisenstein Series, is either 0 or an irreducible representation. As a consequence we compute explicitly the points where Eisenstein Series for square integrable representations are not holomorphic under some hypothesis at the archimedean places: at that places we mainly assume that the infinitesimal character is integral and regular.
Let $\GN\leq\SLR$ be a genus zero Fuchsian group of the first kind with $\infty$ as a cusp, and let $\Ek$ be the holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $2k$ on $\GN$ that is nonvanishing at $\infty$ and vanishes at all the other cusps (provided that such an Eisenstein series exists). Under certain assumptions on $\GN,$ and on a choice of a fundamental domain $\F$, we prove that all but possibly $c(\GN,\F)$ of the non-trivial zeros of $\Ek$ lie on a certain subset of $\{z\in\mathfrak{H} : \JN(z)\in\mathbb{R}\}$. Here $c(\GN,\F)$ is a constant that does not depend on the weight $2k$ and $\JN$ i…
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}$ of the modular curve $X_0(N)$ of level $N$ with respect to a reduced divisor consisting of all cusps. Supposing $N$ is square free, we explicitly determine the structure of the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational torsion points on $\widetilde{J}$ up to $6$-primary torsion. The result turns out to be very different from the case of prime power level previously studied by Yang and the second author. We also obtain an analogous result for Drinfeld modular curves. Our proof relies on similar results for classical Jacobians due to Ohta, Papikian and the first …
For a prime number $q\geq 5$ and a positive integer $N$ prime to $q$, Ribet proved the action of the Hecke algebra on the component group of the Jacobian variety of the modular curve of level $Nq$ at $q$ is "Eisenstein", which means the Hecke operator $T_\ell$ acts by $\ell+1$ when $\ell$ is a prime number not dividing the level. In this paper, we completely compute the action of the Hecke algebra on this component group by a careful study of supersingular points with extra automorphisms.
In our earlier paper, based on a paper by Bump and Ginzburg, we used an Eisenstein series on the double cover of GL(r) to obtain an integral representation of the twisted symmetric square L-function of GL(r). Using that, we showed that the (incomplete) twisted symmetric square L-function of GL(r) is holomorphic for Re(s) > 1. In this paper, we will determine the possible poles of this Eisenstein series more precisely and show that the (incomplete) twisted symmetric square L-function is entire except possible simple poles at s = 0 and s = 1.
For any rational prime $p$, we define a certain $p$-stabilization of holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series for the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ of an arbitrary genus $n \ge 1$. In addition, we derive an explicit formula for the Fourier coefficients and conclude their $p$-adic interpolation problems. Consequently, for any odd prime $p$, we deduce the existence of a $Λ$-adic form (in the sense of A. Wiles, H. Hida and R.L. Taylor) such that after taking a suitable constant multiple, it interpolates $p$-adic analytic families of the above-mentioned $p$-stabilized Siegel Eisenstein…
We derive new Poincaré-series representations for infinite families of non-holomorphic modular invariant functions that include modular graph forms as they appear in the low-energy expansion of closed-string scattering amplitudes at genus one. The Poincaré series are constructed from iterated integrals over single holomorphic Eisenstein series and their complex conjugates, decorated by suitable combinations of zeta values. We evaluate the Poincaré sums over these iterated Eisenstein integrals of depth one and deduce new representations for all modular graph forms built from iterated Eisenstein…

We continue the analysis of modular invariant functions, subject to inhomogeneous Laplace eigenvalue equations, that were determined in terms of Poincaré series in a companion paper. The source term of the Laplace equation is a product of (derivatives of) two non-holomorphic Eisenstein series whence the modular invariants are assigned depth two. These modular invariant functions can sometimes be expressed in terms of single-valued iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series as they appear in generating series of modular graph forms. We show that the set of iterated integrals of Eisenst…
We prove an abstract modularity result for classes of Heegner divisors in the generalized Jacobian of a modular curve associated to a cuspidal modulus. Extending the Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem, we prove that the generating series of these classes is a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight 3/2. Moreover, we show that any harmonic Maass forms of weight 0 defines a functional on the generalized Jacobian. Combining these results, we obtain a unifying framework and new proofs for the Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem and Zagier's modularity of traces of singular moduli, together with new geometric i…
Zagier proved that the traces of singular moduli, i.e., the sums of the values of the classical j-invariant over quadratic irrationalities, are the Fourier coefficients of a modular form of weight 3/2 with poles at the cusps. Using the theta correspondence, we generalize this result to traces of CM values of (weakly holomorphic) modular functions on modular curves of arbitrary genus. We also study the theta lift for the weight 0 Eisenstein series for SL(2,Z) and realize a certain generating series of arithmetic intersection numbers as the derivative of Zagier's Eisenstein series of weight 3/2.…
