Higher-order non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to a Fuchsian group $Γ$ are defined by twisting the series expansion for classical non-holomorphic Eisenstein series by powers of modular symbols. Their functional identities include multiplicative and additive factors, making them distinct from classical Eisenstein series. Here we prove the meromorphic continuation of these series and establish their functional equations. In addition, we construct high rank vector bundles $\cal V$ from certain unipotent representations $π$ of $Γ$ and show that higher-order non-holomorphic Eisenstein series can be viewed as components of certain eigensections, $\mathbb E$, of $\cal V$. With this viewpoint the functional identities of these higher-order series are formally identical to the classical case. Going further, we prove bounds for the Fourier coefficients of the higher-order non-holomorphic Eisenstein series.
New expressions are given for the Fourier expansions of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series with weight $k$. Among other applications, this leads to non-holomorphic analogs of formulas of Ramanujan, Grosswald and Berndt containing Eichler integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series.
We study nearly holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series of general levels and characters on $\mathbb{H}_{2n}$, the Siegel upper half space of degree $2n$. We prove that the Fourier coefficients of these Eisenstein series (once suitably normalized) lie in the ring of integers of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for all sufficiently large primes $p$. We also prove that the pullbacks of these Eisenstein series to $\mathbb{H}_n \times \mathbb{H}_n$ are cuspidal under certain assumptions.
We introduce a new family of real analytic modular forms on the upper half plane. They are arguably the simplest class of `mixed' versions of modular forms of level one and are constructed out of real and imaginary parts of iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series. They form an algebra of functions satisfying many properties analogous to classical holomorphic modular forms. In particular, they admit expansions in $q, \overline{q}$ and $\log |q|$ involving only rational numbers and single-valued multiple zeta values. The first non-trivial functions in this class are real analytic Eis…
We study certain types of Fuchsian groups of the first kind denoted by $R(N)$, which coincide with the Fricke groups or the arithmetic Hecke triangle groups of low levels. We find all elliptic points and cusps of $R(p)$ for a prime $p$, and prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of equivalence classes of elliptic points of $R(p)$ and the imaginary quadratic class group. We also find the explicit formula of the Fourier expansion of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for $R(N)$ and study their analytic properties. These non-holomorphic Eisenstein series together with …
We determine the unipotent orbits attached to degenerate Eisenstein series on general linear groups. This confirms a conjecture of David Ginzburg. This also shows that any unipotent orbit of general linear groups does occur as the unipotent orbit attached to a specific automorphic representation. The key ingredient is a root-theoretic result. To prove it, we introduce the notion of the descending decomposition, which expresses every Weyl group element as a product of simple reflections in a certain way. It is suitable for induction and allows us to translate the question into a combinatorial s…
We construct a p-adic Eisenstein measure with values in the space of p-adic automorphic forms on certain unitary groups. Using this measure, we p-adically interpolate certain special values of both holomorphic and non-holomorphic Eisenstein series, as both the archimedean and the p-adic weights of the Eisenstein series vary.
The classical Kronecker limit formula gives the constant term of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series E(z,s) for SL(2,Z) at s=1 in terms of the Dedekind eta function. Here we compute the analagous formula for an Eisenstein series twisted by modular symbols (periods of weight two holomorphic cusp forms) for general Fuchsian groups of the first kind.

Let $Γ\subset\mathrm{PSL}_{2}(\mathbb{R})$ be a Fuchsian subgroup of the first kind acting by fractional linear transformations on the upper half-plane $\mathbb{H}$, and let $M=Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ be the associated finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface. Associated to any cusp of $M$, there is the classically studied non-holomorphic (parabolic) Eisenstein series. In 1979, Kudla and Millson studied non-holomorphic (hyperbolic) Eisenstein series associated to any closed geodesic on $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. In 2004, Jorgenson and Kramer introduced so-called elliptic Eisenstein series associa…
Shimura studied the analytic properties of the non-holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series and derived a residue formula. Herein, we provide a refinement of his result for several types of Eisenstein series.
For every point on the Jacobian of the modular curve $X_0(l)$ we define and study certain twisted holomorphic Eisenstein series. These are particular cases of a more general notion of twisted modular forms which correspond to sections on the modular curve $X_1(l)$ of the degree zero twists of line bundles of usual modular forms. We conjecture that a point on the Jacobian is rational if and only if the ratios of these twisted Eisenstein series of the same weights have rational coefficients.
In this paper we study iterated Eisenstein τ-integrals and multiple Eisenstein L-series, they are functions on the complex upper half plane and form two Q-algebras. They reduce to iterated Eisenstein integrals and multiple Hecke L-functions with respect to Eisenstein series respectively after analytic extension when τ->0. We give the relations among them and prove the linear independence of their elements. Finally, we explain the connections among double Eisenstein L-functions and holomorphic double modular values.
The classical Kronecker limit formula describes the constant term in the Laurent expansion at the first order pole of the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to the cusp at infinity of the modular group. Recently, the meromorphic continuation and Kronecker limit type formulas were investigated for non-holomorphic Eisenstein series associated to hyperbolic and elliptic elements of a Fuchsian group of the first kind by Jorgenson, Kramer and the first named author. In the present work, we realize averaged versions of all three types of Eisenstein series for $Γ_0(N)$ as regularized theta …
At first a type of Eisenstein series is defined as distributions giving nearly-holomorphic automorphic forms on a totally real field, with different expressions (integral, summation) ; then these are shown to satisfied the expected properties, and the Fourier coefficients are explicitly computed. Finally, an explicit computation shows that in the simplest case, the abstract object considered simplify down to the most classical version of Eisenstein series.
We identify the quantum limits of scattering states for the modular surface. This is obtained through the study of quantum measures of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series away from the critical line. We provide a range of stability for the quantum unique ergodicity theorem of Luo and Sarnak.
Let $X$ be a smooth, compact, projective Kähler variety and $D$ be a divisor of a holomorphic form $F$, and assume that $D$ is smooth up to codimension two. Let $ω$ be a Kähler form on $X$ and $K_{X}$ the corresponding heat kernel which is associated to the Laplacian that acts on the space of smooth functions on $X$. Using various integral transforms of $K_{X}$, we will construct a meromorphic function in a complex variable $s$ whose special value at $s=0$ is the log-norm of $F$ with respect to $μ$. In the case when $X$ is the quotient of a symmetric space, then the function we construct is a …
W. Luo and P. Sarnak have proved the quantum unique ergodicity property for Eisenstein series on $\rm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}) \backslash H$. We extend their result to Eisenstein series on $\rm{PSL}(2,O) \backslash H^n$, where $O$ is the ring of integers in a totally real field of degree $n$ over $Q$ with narrow class number one, using the Eisenstein series considered by I. Efrat. We also give an expository treatment of the theory of Hecke operators on non-holomorphic Hilbert modular forms.
Multiple Eisenstein series are holomorphic functions in the complex upper-half plane, which can be seen as a crossbreed between multiple zeta values and classical Eisenstein series. They were originally defined by Gangl-Kaneko-Zagier in 2006, and since then, many variants and regularizations of them have been studied. They give a natural bridge between the world of modular forms and multiple zeta values. In this note, we give a new algebraic interpretation of stuffle regularized multiple Eisenstein series based on the Hopf algebra structure of the harmonic algebra introduced by Hoffman.
We develop two applications of the Kronecker's limit formula associated to elliptic Eisenstein series: A factorization theorem for holomorphic modular forms, and a proof of Weil's reciprocity law. Several examples of the general factorization results are computed, specifically for certain moonshine groups, congruence subgroups, and, more generally, non-compact subgroups with one cusp. In particular, we explicitly compute the Kronecker limit function associated to certain elliptic points for a few small level moonshine groups.
Borisov and Gunnells observed in 2001 that certain linear relations between products of two holomorphic weight 1 Eisenstein series had the same structure as the relations between periods of modular forms; a similar phenomenon exists in higher weights. We give a conceptual reason for this observation in arbitrary weight. This involves an unconventional way of expanding the Rankin-Selberg convolution of a cusp form with an Eisenstein series. We also prove a partial result towards understanding the action of a Hecke operator on a product of two Eisenstein series.
For primitive non-trivial Dirichlet characters $χ_1$ and $χ_2$, we study the weight zero newform Eisenstein series $E_{χ_1,χ_2}(z,s)$ at $s=1$. The holomorphic part of this function has a transformation rule that we express in finite terms as a generalized Dedekind sum. This gives rise to the explicit construction (in finite terms) of elements of $H^1(Γ_0(N), \mathbb{C})$. We also give a short proof of the reciprocity formula for this Dedekind sum.
Let $\GN\leq\SLR$ be a genus zero Fuchsian group of the first kind with $\infty$ as a cusp, and let $\Ek$ be the holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $2k$ on $\GN$ that is nonvanishing at $\infty$ and vanishes at all the other cusps (provided that such an Eisenstein series exists). Under certain assumptions on $\GN,$ and on a choice of a fundamental domain $\F$, we prove that all but possibly $c(\GN,\F)$ of the non-trivial zeros of $\Ek$ lie on a certain subset of $\{z\in\mathfrak{H} : \JN(z)\in\mathbb{R}\}$. Here $c(\GN,\F)$ is a constant that does not depend on the weight $2k$ and $\JN$ i…
For any rational prime $p$, we define a certain $p$-stabilization of holomorphic Siegel Eisenstein series for the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}(2n)_{/\mathbb{Q}}$ of an arbitrary genus $n \ge 1$. In addition, we derive an explicit formula for the Fourier coefficients and conclude their $p$-adic interpolation problems. Consequently, for any odd prime $p$, we deduce the existence of a $Λ$-adic form (in the sense of A. Wiles, H. Hida and R.L. Taylor) such that after taking a suitable constant multiple, it interpolates $p$-adic analytic families of the above-mentioned $p$-stabilized Siegel Eisenstein…
The low-energy expansion of closed-string scattering amplitudes at genus one introduces infinite families of non-holomorphic modular forms called modular graph forms. Their differential and number-theoretic properties motivated Brown's alternative construction of non-holomorphic modular forms in the recent mathematics literature from so-called equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals. In this work, we provide the first validations beyond depth one of Brown's conjecture that equivariant iterated Eisenstein integrals contain modular graph forms. Apart from a variety of examples at depth two and…

This paper studies the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series E(z,s) for the modular surface, and shows that integration with respect to certain non-negative measures gives meromorphic functions of s that have all their zeros on the critical line Re(s) = 1/2. For the constant term of the Eisenstein series it shows that all zeros are on the critical line for fixed y= Im(z) \ge 1, except possibly for two real zeros, which are present if and only if y > 4 πe^{-γ} = 7.0555+. It shows the Riemann hypothesis holds for all truncation integrals with truncation parameter T \ge 1. For T=1 this proves the Rie…
Motivated by string theory scattering amplitudes that are invariant under a discrete U-duality, we study Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series on Kac-Moody groups. In particular, we analyse the Eisenstein series on $E_9(R)$, $E_{10}(R)$ and $E_{11}(R)$ corresponding to certain degenerate principal series at the values s=3/2 and s=5/2 that were studied in 1204.3043. We show that these Eisenstein series have very simple Fourier coefficients as expected for their role as supersymmetric contributions to the higher derivative couplings $R^4$ and $\partial^{4} R^4$ coming from 1/2-BPS and 1/4-BP…
We have shown in a preceeding paper how to normalize intertwining operators for classical groups using the twisted endoscopy lifting. In this paper, we prove that the image of such an operator in the cases interesting in the theory of Eisenstein Series, is either 0 or an irreducible representation. As a consequence we compute explicitly the points where Eisenstein Series for square integrable representations are not holomorphic under some hypothesis at the archimedean places: at that places we mainly assume that the infinitesimal character is integral and regular.
Let $Γ\subseteq \text{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ be a genus zero Fuchsian group of the first kind having $\infty$ as a cusp, and let $E_{2 k}^Γ$ be the holomorphic Eisenstein series associated with $Γ$ for the $\infty$ cusp that does not vanish at $\infty$ but vanishes at all the other cusps. In the paper "On zeros of Eisenstein series for genus zero Fuchsian groups", under assumptions on $Γ$, and on a certain fundamental domain $\mathcal{F}$, H. Hahn proved that all but at most $c(Γ, \mathcal{F})$ (a constant) of the zeros of $E_{2 k}^Γ$ lie on a certain subset of $\{z \in \mathfrak{H} : j_Γ(z) \in \…
In our earlier paper, based on a paper by Bump and Ginzburg, we used an Eisenstein series on the double cover of GL(r) to obtain an integral representation of the twisted symmetric square L-function of GL(r). Using that, we showed that the (incomplete) twisted symmetric square L-function of GL(r) is holomorphic for Re(s) > 1. In this paper, we will determine the possible poles of this Eisenstein series more precisely and show that the (incomplete) twisted symmetric square L-function is entire except possible simple poles at s = 0 and s = 1.
By the theory of Eisenstein series, generating functions of various divisor functions arise as modular forms. It is natural to ask whether further divisor functions arise systematically in the theory of mock modular forms. We establish, using the method of Zagier and Zwegers on holomorphic projection, that this is indeed the case for certain (twisted) "small divisors" summatory functions $σ_ψ^{\mathrm{sm}}(n)$. More precisely, in terms of the weight 2 quasimodular Eisenstein series $E_2(τ)$ and a generic Shimura theta function $θ_ψ(τ)$, we show that there is a constant $α_ψ$ for which $$ \math…
We show that the absolute value $|f|$ of an invertible holomorphic function $f$ on the Drinfeld symmetric space $\OM^r$ $(r \geq 2)$ is constant on fibers of the building map to the Bruhat-Tits building $\MB\MT$. Its logarithm $\log|f|$ is an affine map on the realization of $\MB\MT$. These results are used to study the vanishing loci of modular forms (coefficient forms, Eisenstein series, para-Eisenstein series) and to determine their images in $\MB\MT$.
We derive new Poincaré-series representations for infinite families of non-holomorphic modular invariant functions that include modular graph forms as they appear in the low-energy expansion of closed-string scattering amplitudes at genus one. The Poincaré series are constructed from iterated integrals over single holomorphic Eisenstein series and their complex conjugates, decorated by suitable combinations of zeta values. We evaluate the Poincaré sums over these iterated Eisenstein integrals of depth one and deduce new representations for all modular graph forms built from iterated Eisenstein…
Let $E(z,s)$ be the non-holomorphic Eisenstein series for the modular group $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The classical Kronecker limit formula shows that the second term in the Laurent expansion at $s=1$ of $E(z,s)$ is essentially the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. This eta function is a weight $1/2$ modular form and Dedekind expressed its multiplier system in terms of Dedekind sums. Building on work of Goldstein, we extend these results from the modular group to more general Fuchsian groups $Γ$. The analogue of the eta function has a multiplier system that may be expressed in terms of a map …
We consider the $t$-hook functions on partitions $f_{a,t}: \mathcal{P}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ defined by $$ f_{a,t}(λ):=t^{a-1} \sum_{h\in \mathcal{H}_t(λ)}\frac{1}{h^a}, $$ where $\mathcal{H}_t(λ)$ is the multiset of partition hook numbers that are multiples of $t$. The Bloch-Okounkov $q$-brackets $\langle f_{a,t}\rangle_q$ include Eichler integrals of the classical Eisenstein series. For even $a\geq 2$, we show that these $q$-brackets are natural pieces of weight $2-a$ sesquiharmonic and harmonic Maass forms, while for odd $a\leq -1,$ we show that they are holomorphic quantum modular forms. …
We show that the periods of the holomorphic Eisenstein series of level 1, parallel weight 2, on a Hilbert modular surface are not rational, even up to scaling. This is deduced from a study of the mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the Hilbert modular surface, where we find extension classes related to the units of the real quadratic field. We prove similar results for Hilbert modular varieties of all dimensions, and produce extensions of Galois representations in étale cohomology. The key point is to study the restriction of the canonical extension of the Hodge bundle to the boundary o…
We continue the analysis of modular invariant functions, subject to inhomogeneous Laplace eigenvalue equations, that were determined in terms of Poincaré series in a companion paper. The source term of the Laplace equation is a product of (derivatives of) two non-holomorphic Eisenstein series whence the modular invariants are assigned depth two. These modular invariant functions can sometimes be expressed in terms of single-valued iterated integrals of holomorphic Eisenstein series as they appear in generating series of modular graph forms. We show that the set of iterated integrals of Eisenst…
The Rankin-Cohen bracket of two Eisenstein series provides a kernel yielding products of the periods of Hecke eigenforms at critical values. Extending this idea leads to a new type of Eisenstein series built with a double sum. We develop the properties of these series and their non-holomorphic analogs and show their connection to values of L-functions outside the critical strip.
The Bernstein-Gelfand tensor product functors are endofunctors of the category of Harish-Chandra modules provided by tensor products with finite dimensional modules. We provide an automorphic analogue of these tensor product functors, implemented by vector-valued automorphic representations that are trivial at all finite places. They naturally explain the role of vector-valued modular forms in recent work by Bringmann-Kudla on Harish-Chandra modules associated with harmonic weak Maaß forms. We give a detailed account of the image $\mathrm{sym}^1 \otimes \varpi(E_2)$ of the automorphic represen…

We define canonical real analytic versions of modular forms of integral weight for the full modular group, generalising real analytic Eisenstein series. They are harmonic Maass waveforms with poles at the cusp, whose Fourier coefficients involve periods and quasi-periods of cusp forms, which are conjecturally transcendental. In particular, we settle the question of finding explicit `weak harmonic lifts' for every eigenform of integral weight $k$ and level one. We show that mock modular forms of integral weight are algebro-geometric and have Fourier coefficients proportional to $n^{1-k}(a'_n + …
