In this paper, we show that certain local Strichartz estimates for solutions of the wave equation exterior to a convex obstacle can be extended to estimates that are global in both space and time. This extends the work that was done previously by H. Smith and C. Sogge in odd spatial dimensions.
Using a new local smoothing estimate of the first and third authors, we prove local-in-time Strichartz and smoothing estimates without a loss exterior to a large class of polygonal obstacles with arbitrary boundary conditions and global-in-time Strichartz estimates without a loss exterior to a large class of polygonal obstacles with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In addition, we prove a global-in-time local smoothing estimate in exterior wedge domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions and discuss some nonlinear applications.
We prove Strichartz estimates without loss for the Schrödinger equation and the wave equation outside finitely many strictly convex obstacles verifying Ikawa's condition, extending the approach we introduced previously for the two convex case.
We prove global Strichartz estimates without loss outside two strictly convex obstacles, combining arguments from M.Ikawa (1982,1988) with more recent ones inspired by N.Burq, C.Guillarmou, and A. Hassell (2010) and O. Ivanovici (2010). This is to be contrasted with the loss in the smoothing estimate for the Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the presence of a trapped geodesic.
We prove global wellposedness in the energy space of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schroedinger and Gross-Pitaevskii equations on the exterior of a non-trapping domain in dimension 3. The main ingredient is a Strichartz estimate obtained combining a semi-classical Strichartz estimate with a smoothing effect on exterior domains.
In this paper we show a general Strichartz estimate for certain perturbed wave equation, and here we can drop the nontrapping hypothesis and handle trapping obstacles with some loss of derivatives for data in the local energy decay estimates. Then we give the obstacle version of sharp life span for semilinear wave equations when $n=3,p<p_c$, by using a real interpolation method, and by getting a corresponding finite time Strichartz estimates(see section 3). Finally, as an application of the general Strichartz estimates we have gained, we get the Strauss conjecture for semilinear wave equations…
We establish a mixed-norm Strichartz type estimate for the wave equation on Riemannian manifolds $(Ω,g)$, for the case that $Ω$ is the exterior of a smooth, normally hyperbolic trapped obstacle in $n$ dimensional Euclidean space, and $n$ is a positive odd integer. As for the normally hyperbolic trapped obstacles, we will some loss of derivatives for data in the local energy decay estimate. Hence the global Strichartz estimate has a derivative loss. However, we can show that the forcing term is bounded by the sum of no more than two Lebesgue $(p,q)$ mixed norms.
We establish Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation on Riemannian manifolds $(Ω,\g)$ with boundary, for both the compact case and the case that $Ω$ is the exterior of a smooth, non-trapping obstacle in Euclidean space. The estimates for exterior domains are scale invariant; the range of Lebesgue exponents $(p,q)$ for which we obtain these estimates is smaller than the range known for Euclidean space, but includes the key $L^4_tL^\infty_x$ estimate, which we use to give a simple proof of well-posedness results for the energy critical Schrödinger equation in 3 dimensions. Our estimate…
We prove sharp Strichartz estimates for the semi-classical Schrodinger equation on a compact manifold with smooth, strictly geodesically concave boundary. We deduce sharp (classical) Strichartz estimates for the Schrodinger equation outside a strictly convex obstacle, local existence for the H^1-critical (quintic) Schrodinger equation and scattering for the sub-critical Schrodinger equation in 3D.
In this article we consider variable coefficient, time dependent wave equations in exterior domains. We prove localized energy estimates if the domain is star-shaped and global in time Strichartz estimates if the domain is strictly convex.
In this paper, we show global existence, in spatial dimensions greater than or equal to four, for semilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities exterior to a nontrapping obstacle. This extends the previous work of Shibata-Tsutsumi and Hayashi. Shibata-Tsutsumi showed the result for spatial dimensions greater than or equal to 6, and Hayashi proved the result exterior to a ball.
We study long time existence for high dimensional quasilinear wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles. In particular, we obtain exterior domain analogs of the four dimensional results of Hörmander where the nonlinearity is permitted to depend on the solution not just its first and second derivatives. Previous proofs in exterior domains omitted this dependence as it did not mesh well with the energy methods in use.
In this paper we prove that the energy - critical nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation in the domain exterior to a convex obstacle is globally well - posed and scattering for initial data having finite energy. To prove this we utilize frequency localized Morawetz estimates adapted to an exterior domain.
We consider the defocusing energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a smooth compact strictly convex obstacle in three dimensions. For the initial-value problem with Dirichlet boundary condition we prove global well-posedness and scattering for all initial data in the energy space.
We prove that solutions to non-linear Schrödinger equations in two dimensions and in the exterior of a bounded and smooth star-shaped obstacle scatter in the energy space. The non-linear potential is defocusing and grows at least as the quintic power.
We consider the motion of an incompressible viscous fluid filling the whole space exterior to a moving with rotation and translation obstacle. We show that the Stokes operator around the steady flow in the exterior of this obstacle generates a $C_0$-semigroup in $L^p$ space and then develop a series of $L^p$-$L^q$ estimates of such semigroup. As an application, we give out the stability of such steady flow when the initial disturbance in $L^3$ and the steady flow are sufficiently small.
In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problem of three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with rotating effect terms in an exterior domain with Navier-slip boundary condition and with far-field vacuum. This problem is related to the motion of the compressible viscous flow past a rotating obstacle. We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, provided that the initial mass is small. The initial data and the angular velocity of the obstacle are allowed to have large oscillations.
The purpose of this paper is to show how local energy decay estimates for certain linear wave equations involving compact perturbations of the standard Laplacian lead to optimal global existence theorems for the corresponding small amplitude nonlinear wave equations with power nonlinearities. To achieve this goal, at least for spatial dimensions $n=3$ and 4, we shall show how the aforementioned linear decay estimates can be combined with "abstract Strichartz" estimates for the free wave equation to prove corresponding estimates for the perturbed wave equation when $n\ge3$. As we shall see, we …
We verify the three-dimensional Glassey conjecture for exterior domain (M, g), where the metric g is asymptotically Euclidean, provided that certain local energy assumption is satisfied. The radial Glassey conjecture exterior to a ball is also verified for dimension three or higher. The local energy assumption is satisfied for many important cases, including exterior domain with nontrapping obstacles and flat metric, exterior domain with star-shaped obstacles and small asymptotically Euclidean metric, as well as the nontrapping asymptotically Euclidean manifolds (R^n, g).
In this paper, we consider the Schrödinger equation with a mass-supercritical focusing nonlinearity, in the exterior of a smooth, compact, convex obstacle of $\R^{d}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that solutions with negative energy blow up in finite time. Assuming furthermore that the nonlinearity is energy-subcritical, we also prove (under additional symmetry conditions) blow-up with the same optimal ground-state criterion than in the work of Holmer and Roudenko on $\R^{d}$. The classical proof of Glassey, based on the concavity of the variance, fails in the exterior of an obs…
We prove global Strichartz estimates without loss for the wave equation outside two strictly convex obstacles, following the roadmap introduced in [Lafontaine, 2017] for the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we show a first step toward the large data scattering for the critical non linear equation associated to this geometrical setting, and prove the scattering for a class of non trapping obstacles close to the two convex framework.
Global existence and scattering for the nonlinear defocusing Schrödinger equation in 2 dimensions are known for domains exterior to star-shaped obstacles and for nonlinearities that grow at least as the quintic power. In this paper, we extend the global existence result for all non-trapping obstacles and for nonlinearities with power strictly greater than quartic. For such nonlinearities, we also prove scattering for a class of so-called almost star-shaped obstacles.
Consider the Navier-Stokes flow past a rotating obstacle with a general time-dependent angular velocity and a time-dependent outflow condition at infinity -- sometimes called an Oseen condition. By a suitable change of coordinates the problem is transformed to an non-autonomous problem with unbounded drift terms on a fixed exterior domain $Ω\subset \R^d$. It is shown that the solution to the linearized problem is governed by a strongly continuous evolution system $\{T_Ω(t,s)\}_{t\geq s\geq0}$ on $L^p_σ(Ω)$ for $1<p<\infty$. Moreover, $L^p$-$L^q$ smoothing properties and gradient estimates of $…
We establish the Strauss conjecture for nontrapping obstacles when the spatial dimension $n$ is two. As pointed out in \cite{HMSSZ} this case is more subtle than $n=3$ or 4 due to the fact that the arguments of the first two authors \cite{SmSo00}, Burq \cite{B} and Metcalfe \cite{M} showing that local Strichartz estimates for obstactles imply global ones require that the Sobolev index, $γ$, equal 1/2 when $n=2$. We overcome this difficulty by interpolating between energy estimates ($γ=0$) and ones for $γ=\frac12$ that are generalizations of Minkowski space estimates of Fang and the third autho…
In this review paper, we summarize the current state-of-art on the Strauss conjecture with nontrapping obstacles. Among others, three essential estimates are emphasized and presented: Morawetz-KSS estimates (also known as local energy estimates), weighted Strichartz estimates and generalized Strichartz estimates.
Scattering for the energy critical non-linear wave equation for domains exterior to non trapping obstacles in 3+1 dimension is known for the star-shaped case. In this paper, we extend the scattering for a class of non star-shaped obstacles called illuminated from exterior. The main tool we use is the method of multipliers with weights that generalize the Morawetz multiplier to suit the geometry of the obstacle.
In this paper we consider the " exterior approach " to solve the inverse obstacle problem for the heat equation. This iterated approach is based on a quasi-reversibility method to compute the solution from the Cauchy data while a simple level set method is used to characterize the obstacle. We present several mixed formulations of quasi-reversibility that enable us to use some classical conforming finite elements. Among these, an iterated formulation that takes the noisy Cauchy data into account in a weak way is selected to serve in some numerical experiments and show the feasibility of our st…
We are interested in this article in investigating the smoothing effect properties of the solutions of the Schrodinger equation. We deduce global well-posedness results for the cubic Schrodinger equation in the exterior of several convex obstacles of R^{3}.
The aim of this article is to prove an "almost" global existence result for some semilinear wave equations in the plane outside a bounded convex obstacle with the Neumann boundary condition.
The paper is devoted to investigating long time behavior of smooth small data solutions to 3-D quasilinear wave equations outside of compact convex obstacles with Neumann boundary conditions.
This paper is a follow-up of article [Gerard-Varet and Lacave, ARMA 2013], on the existence of global weak solutions to the two dimensional Euler equations in singular domains. In [Gerard-Varet and Lacave, ARMA 2013], we have established the existence of weak solutions for a large class of bounded domains, with initial vorticity in $L^p$ ($p>1$). For unbounded domains, we have proved a similar result only when the initial vorticity is in $L^p_{c}$ ($p>2$) and when the domain is the exterior of a single obstacle. The goal here is to retrieve these two restrictions: we consider general initial v…
In some problems of fluid mechanics, it is possible to be confronted with data that are not regular, that is why we are interested here in the search for the so-called very weak solutions for the stationary Stokes problem with Navier-type boundary conditions in a three-dimensional exterior domain. The problem describes the flow of a viscous and incompressible fluid past an obstacle where we assume that the fluid may slip on the boundary of the obstacle. Because the flow domain is unbounded, we set the problem in weighted Sobolev spaces in order to control the behavior at infinity of the soluti…
This paper is concerned with resolvent estimates on the real axis for the Helmholtz equation posed in the exterior of a bounded obstacle with Dirichlet boundary conditions when the obstacle is trapping. There are two resolvent estimates for this situation currently in the literature: (i) in the case of elliptic trapping the general "worst case" bound of exponential growth applies, and examples show that this growth can be realised through some sequence of wavenumbers, (ii) in the prototypical case of hyperbolic trapping where the Helmholtz equation is posed in the exterior of two strictly conv…
In this article we consider viscous flow in the exterior of an obstacle satisfying the standard no-slip boundary condition at the surface of the obstacle. We seek conditions under which solutions of the Navier-Stokes system in the exterior domain converge to solutions of the Euler system in the full space when both viscosity and the size of the obstacle vanish. We prove that this convergence is true assuming two hypothesis: first, that the initial exterior domain velocity converges strongly in $L^2$ to the full-space initial velocity and second, that the diameter of the obstacle is smaller tha…
In this paper, we consider exterior problem of the critical semilinear wave equation in three space dimensions with variable coefficients and prove global existence of smooth solutions. Similar to the constant coefficients case, we show that the energy cannot concentrate at any point $(t,x)\in(0,\infty)\timesΩ$. For that purpose, following Ibrahim and Majdoub \cite{Ibrahim}, we use a geometric multiplier close to the well-known Morawetz multiplier used in the constant coefficients case. Then we use comparison theorem from Riemannian Geometry to estimate the error terms. Finally, using Strichar…
We study the two-dimensional stationary Navier-Stokes equations describing the flows around a rotating obstacle. The unique existence of solutions and their asymptotic behavior at spatial infinity are established when the rotation speed of the obstacle and the given exterior force are sufficiently small.
We consider the wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the exterior of a cylinder in R 3 and we construct a global in time parametrix to derive sharp dispersion estimates for all frequencies (low and high) and, as a corollary, Strichartz estimates, all matching the R 3 case.
We consider refinements of the local smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation in domains which are exterior to a strictly convex obstacle in $\RR^n$. By restricting the solution to small, frequency dependent collars of the boundary, it is expected that taking its square integral in space-time should exhibit a larger gain in regularity when compared to the usual gain of half a derivative. By a result of Ivanovici, these refined local smoothing estimates are satisfied by solutions in the exterior of a ball. We show that when such estimates are valid, they can be combined with wave packet…
In this work we study the asymptotic behavior of viscous incompressible 2D flow in the exterior of a small material obstacle. We fix the initial vorticity $ω_0$ and the circulation $γ$ of the initial flow around the obstacle. We prove that, if $γ$ is sufficiently small, the limit flow satisfies the full-plane Navier-Stokes system, with initial vorticity $ω_0 + γδ$, where $δ$ is the standard Dirac measure. The result should be contrasted with the corresponding inviscid result obtained by the authors in [Comm P.D.E. 28 (2003) 349-379], where the effect of the small obstacle appears in the coeffi…
In this article, we prove that solutions to a problem in nonlinear elasticity corresponding to small initial displacements exist globally in the exterior of a nontrapping obstacle. The medium is assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic, and hyperelastic, and the nonlinearity is assumed to satisfy a null condition. The techniques contained herein would allow for more complicated geometries provided that there is a sufficient decay of local energy for the linearized problem.
In this article, we consider Leray solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of one obstacle in 3D and we study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when the obstacle shrinks to a curve or to a surface. In particular, we will prove that a solid curve has no effect on the motion of a viscous fluid, so it is a removable singularity for these equations.
We study the asymptotic behavior of an incompressible fluid around a bounded obstacle. The problem is modeled by the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in an exterior domain in $\R^n$ with $n\ge 2$. We will show that, under some assumptions, any nontrivial velocity field obeys a minimal decaying rate $\exp(-Ct^2\log t)$ at infinity. Our proof is based on appropriate Carleman estimates.
In this paper we consider the mixed problem for the wave equation exterior to a non-trapping obstacle in odd space dimensions. We derive a rate of the convergence of the solution for the mixed problem to a solution for the Cauchy problem. As a by-product, we are able to find out the radiation field of solutions to the mixed problem in terms of the scattering data.
In this article we shall go over recent work in proving dispersive and Strichartz estimates for the Dirichlet-wave equation. We shall discuss applications to existence questions outside of obstacles and discuss open problems.
We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary condition in the exterior of one obstacle. Assuming that the circulation at infinity of the velocity is sufficiently small, we prove that the large time behavior of the corresponding solution to the initial-boundary value problem is described by the Lamb-Oseen vortex. The later is the well-known explicit self-similar solution to the Navier-Stokes system in the whole space $\R^2$.
We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for semilinear wave equations in a three space dimensional domain exterior to a bounded and non-trapping obstacle. We obtain a detailed estimate for the lower bound of the lifespan of classical solutions when the size of initial data tends to zero, in a similar spirit to that of the works of John and Hörmander where the Cauchy problem was treated. We show that our estimate is sharp at least for some special case.
This article focuses on almost global existence for quasilinear wave equations with small initial data in 4-dimensional exterior domains. The nonlinearity is allowed to depend on the solution at the quadratic level as well as its first and second derivatives. For this problem in the boundaryless setting, Hörmander proved that the lifespan is bounded below by $\exp(c/ε)$ where $ε>0$ denotes the size of the Cauchy data. Later Du, the second author, Sogge, and Zhou showed that this inequality also holds for star-shaped obstacles. Following up on the authors' work in the 3-dimensional case, we wea…
In this paper we prove global existence for certain multispeed Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities outside of obstacles. We assume the natural null condition for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple speeds. The null condition only puts restrictions on the self-interactions of each wave family. We use the method of commuting vector fields and weighted space-time $L^2$ estimates.
In [Lacave, IHP, ana, to appear (2008)] the author considered the two dimensional Euler equations in the exterior of a thin obstacle shrinking to a curve and determined the limit velocity. In the present work, we consider the same problem in the viscous case, proving convergence to a solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior of a curve. The uniqueness of the limit solution is also shown.
The goal of this paper is to develop some basic harmonic analysis tools for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the exterior domain associated to a smooth convex obstacle in dimensions $d\geq 3$. Specifically, we will discuss analogues of the Mikhlin Multiplier Theorem, Littlewood-Paley Theory, and Hardy inequalities, culminating in a proof that homogeneous Sobolev norms defined with respect to the Dirichlet and whole-space Laplacians are equivalent for the sharp ranges of integrability exponent $p$ and regularity $s$. Counterexamples are included to show that these results are indeed sharp. In particu…
